The dimension of permittivity of a medium is (a) M−1L−3I2M^{-1}L^{-3}I^2 (b) M1L3TI2M^1L^3TI^2 (c) MLTI−2MLTI^{-2} (d) MLT−2IMLT^{-2}I

Answer

(a) M−1L−3I2M^{-1}L^{-3}I^2

From Coulomb's law F=q24πε0r2F=\frac{q^2}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 r^2}, ε0=q2Fr2\varepsilon_0=\frac{q^2}{F r^2}. With q=ITq=IT and F=MLT−2F=MLT^{-2}, this gives ε0=M−1L−3T4I2\varepsilon_0=M^{-1}L^{-3}T^{4}I^{2}. Option (a) is the one with the correct M−1L−3I2M^{-1}L^{-3}I^2 pattern (the T4T^4 factor is dropped in the printed option).

An object of mass m is revolving in a vertical circle of radius r. The tension in the object at the top of the vertical circle will be (a) mgmg (b) mv2r+mg\frac{mv^2}{r}+mg (c) mv2r\frac{mv^2}{r} (d) mg−mv2rmg-\frac{mv^2}{r}

Answer

(d) mg−mv2rmg-\frac{mv^2}{r}

At the top, the centripetal force is provided by tension and weight acting downwards: T+mg=mv2rT+mg=\frac{mv^2}{r}, so the magnitude of the tension is mv2r−mg\frac{mv^2}{r}-mg. Of the given options, (d) is the one with the same combination of terms (it differs only in the sign convention).

When a metal sphere is heated, the percentage expansion is maximum for its (a) area (b) diameter (c) volume (d) length

Answer

(c) volume

For a small temperature rise, the fractional expansion is αΔT\alpha\Delta T for length or diameter, 2αΔT2\alpha\Delta T for area and 3αΔT3\alpha\Delta T for volume. So the percentage expansion is greatest for volume.

The latent heat energy of a substance signifies (a) decrease in the internal energy of the substance (b) increase in the temperature of the substance (c) to produce the chemical changes in the substance (d) increase in the internal energy of the substance

Answer

(d) increase in the internal energy of the substance

During a change of state, the heat absorbed (latent heat) does not change the temperature. It goes into increasing the potential energy of the molecules, that is, the internal energy.

A reversible Carnot cycle engine operates between temperature of 1000 K and 250 K. If 16 kJ of heat is transferred to the engine at 1000 K in one cycle, the heat transferred from the engine at 250 K in kJ is (a) 2 (b) 4 (c) 6 (d) 8

Answer

(b) 4

For a reversible (Carnot) engine, Q2Q1=T2T1\frac{Q_2}{Q_1}=\frac{T_2}{T_1}.

Q2=16×2501000=4 kJQ_2=16\times\frac{250}{1000}=4\text{ kJ}

Two identical electric bulbs rated 1 KW; 220V are connected in series and the combination is connected to 200V supply line. The power dissipated in each bulb is around. (a) 50W (b) 100W (c) 200W (d) 250W

Answer

(c) 200 W

Resistance of each bulb: R=V2P=22021000=48.4 ΩR=\frac{V^2}{P}=\frac{220^2}{1000}=48.4\ \Omega.

In series, each bulb gets 100100 V, so

P=V2R=100248.4≈207 W≈200 WP=\frac{V^2}{R}=\frac{100^2}{48.4}\approx207\text{ W}\approx200\text{ W}
