Kirchhoff's Laws

Answer

(Kirchhoff's Laws)

(KCL / Junction Rule)

∑I=0वा∑Iin=∑Iout\sum I = 0 \quad \text{वा} \quad \sum I_{\text{in}} = \sum I_{\text{out}}

I1+I2=I3I_1 + I_2 = I_3 5+3=I3⇒I3=8 A5 + 3 = I_3 \Rightarrow I_3 = 8\,A

(KVL / Loop Rule)

∑E=∑IRवा∑V=0\sum E = \sum IR \quad \text{वा} \quad \sum V = 0

E=I(R1+R2)E = I(R_1 + R_2) 12=I(2+4)=6I12 = I(2 + 4) = 6I I=126=2 AI = \frac{12}{6} = 2\,A

Star Delta connection

Answer

Star-Delta (Y–Δ) connection (स्टार–डेल्टा जडान)

   PRIMARY (Y) SECONDARY (Δ)

 A ──── [A1 coil A2]──┐ a1──[coil a]──a2
 B ──── [B1 coil B2]──┼── N (neutral) b1──[coil b]──b2
 C ──── [C1 coil C2]──┘ c1──[coil c]──c2

                                         line terminal a, b, c निकालिएको

 Delta बन्द loop: a
                        / \
                       / \
                      c─────b

Star (Y)

VL=3 Vph,IL=IphV_L = \sqrt{3}\,V_{ph}, \qquad I_L = I_{ph}

Delta (Δ)

VL=Vph,IL=3 IphV_L = V_{ph}, \qquad I_L = \sqrt{3}\,I_{ph}

VL(primary)VL(secondary)=3 N1N2\frac{V_{L(primary)}}{V_{L(secondary)}} = \sqrt{3}\,\frac{N_1}{N_2}

Answer

(Working Principle)

EMF समीकरण: EsEp=NsNp=K(turns ratio)\frac{E_s}{E_p} = \frac{N_s}{N_p} = K \quad \text{(turns ratio)}

  • Ns>NpN_s > N_p → Step-up transformer
  • Ns<NpN_s < N_p → Step-down transformer

(Schematic Diagram):

        Primary (Np) Secondary (Ns)
   ┌───────┐ ┌──────────────┐ ┌───────┐
   │ │ │ Laminated │ │ │
 AC│ │ │ Iron Core │ │ │ Load
───┤ Coil ├──┤ (flux path) ├──┤ Coil ├───
   │ │ │ │ │ │
   └───────┘ └──────────────┘ └───────┘
        ↑ ↑
   AC supply Induced EMF

Power system

How do electrical fires start and how can they be prevented? Describe.

Answer

How electrical fires start

An electrical fire needs three things together — heat, fuel (insulation, wooden fittings, curtains) and oxygen. In electrical installations the heat comes from:

  1. Overloading — too many appliances on one circuit or a fuse/breaker rated higher than the cable, so the conductor carries more current than its rating and gets red hot.
  2. Short circuit — live and neutral (or live and earth) touch because of damaged insulation, loose connections or moisture, giving a huge current and an arc.
  3. Loose or poor connections — at terminals, switches, sockets and joints. The contact resistance is high, so heat is produced locally even at normal current.
  4. Earth leakage / faulty earthing — leakage current through a high-resistance earth path heats the point of contact and can ignite nearby material.
  5. Overheated equipment — undersized cables, faulty fans, heaters, irons left on, or a motor running with a blocked ventilation slot.
  6. Arcing and sparking — worn brushes, worn-out switches, broken lamp holders, or rodents gnawing cable insulation.

Prevention

  1. Correct design and rating — cables, fuses, MCBs and switches must be rated for the load; never replace a fuse with a thicker wire or a higher-rated one.
  2. Proper earthing — an effective earth electrode and earth continuity conductor, checked periodically, so fault current trips the protective device quickly.
  3. Protective devices — MCB, ELCB/RCCB (30 mA for human protection), and correct discrimination between them.
  4. Good workmanship — tight terminals, proper joints (no twisted-and-taped joints in load circuits), quality fittings, and no temporary wiring.
  5. Regular inspection and maintenance — check for heating, discolouration, burning smell, loose screws and damaged insulation; replace old or brittle wiring.
  6. Avoid overloading — do not run many high-wattage appliances from one socket; use separate circuits for heaters, geysers and air conditioners.
  7. Keep combustibles away — no cloth, paper or plastic stored near switchboards, meters or hot equipment.
  8. Protect cables — conduit or casing, and keep them out of reach of rodents and water.
  9. Switch off when not in use — especially heaters, irons and other heating appliances.
  10. Fire-fighting readiness — keep CO₂ or dry-powder extinguishers near the main switchboard; never use water on a live electrical fire. Switch off the main supply first, then fight the fire.

Answer

(Performance Test of Electrical Safety Devices)

Describe in brief about the function of Surge Arrester.

Answer

Function of Surge Arrester (5 marks)

A surge arrester is a protective device installed on transmission lines, substations and at the terminals of transformers, generators and other costly equipment. Its main function is to protect the insulation of electrical equipment from overvoltages caused by lightning strokes and switching operations.

Functions in brief:

  1. Diverts surge current to earth: When a high-voltage surge (due to lightning or switching) appears on the line, the arrester becomes conducting and provides a low-resistance path, discharging the surge current safely to the ground. Thus the equipment is bypassed and saved from the surge.

  2. Limits the voltage across equipment: During the surge, the arrester clamps the voltage at its terminals to a fixed value called the spark-over or discharge voltage, which is lower than the basic impulse insulation level (BIL) of the equipment. Hence the insulation of the equipment is not stressed beyond its withstand capacity.

  3. Restores normal condition automatically: As soon as the surge is over, the arrester stops conducting and returns to its normal insulating (non-conducting) state, so that the normal power-frequency supply continues without interruption and no follow-up (power-frequency) current flows to earth.

  4. Repeats operation: It is designed to operate repeatedly for any number of surges without damage, so it gives continuous protection to the system.

  5. Coordination of insulation: By fixing the discharge voltage below the equipment insulation level, it helps in proper insulation coordination of the whole substation.

In short, a surge arrester acts as a safety valve which discharges abnormal overvoltages to earth and protects the line and substation equipment from damage.

What is meant by system earthing and equipment earthing? Write.

Answer

System earthing (also called neutral earthing) means connecting the neutral point of a power system — such as the neutral of a generator, transformer secondary, or star point of a winding — to earth, either directly or through a resistor or reactor. Its purpose is to limit the voltage rise of the system during faults, provide a return path for fault current, and protect the system insulation and connected equipment from overvoltages.

Equipment earthing (also called body earthing or safety earthing) means connecting the non-current-carrying metal parts of electrical equipment — such as the metallic enclosure of a motor, transformer tank, switchgear frame, or machine body — to earth. Its purpose is to keep the body at earth potential so that if insulation fails and the body becomes live, the fault current flows to earth through the earthing conductor and operates the protective device (fuse/MCB/relay), thereby protecting the operator from electric shock.

In short, system earthing protects the system, while equipment earthing protects the person touching the equipment.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of high voltage transmission line?

Answer

Advantages of high voltage transmission line:

  1. Lower line loss (higher efficiency): Power loss in a line is Ploss=I2RP_{loss} = I^2R. For the same power P=VIP = VI, raising the voltage lowers the current II, and since loss varies as the square of current, losses fall sharply. This is the main reason for using high voltage.
  2. Less voltage drop and better voltage regulation: Lower current means smaller IRIR drop along the conductor, so the receiving-end voltage stays close to the sending-end value.
  3. Smaller conductor size, hence less copper/aluminium: As current is reduced, a smaller cross-sectional area is enough to carry it, saving costly conductor material.
  4. Higher power transfer capability: The same line can transmit much more power at higher voltage over long distances.
  5. Fewer lines and lower cost per MW-km: Fewer parallel circuits are needed, reducing right-of-way, towers and overall transmission cost per unit of power delivered.
  6. Long-distance bulk transmission becomes economical: Power from remote hydro stations (e.g., Kaligandaki, Upper Tamakoshi) can be brought to load centres far away.
  7. Better system stability and interconnection: Strong HV ties allow interconnection of regional grids and sharing of reserve power.

Disadvantages:

  1. High insulation requirement: Conductors, insulators, towers and switchgear must be designed for high voltage, which is expensive (long insulator strings, larger clearance).
  2. Increased corona loss and radio interference: At high voltage, corona discharge causes power loss, audible noise, ozone formation and interference with communication lines.
  3. Greater right-of-way and taller towers: Large conductor spacing and ground clearance need wide corridors and tall, strong towers, raising civil cost.
  4. More difficult and costly construction, operation and maintenance: Skilled manpower, special tools, live-line techniques and safety measures are required.
  5. Higher lightning and switching overvoltage risk: Surge arresters, shielding wires and extra insulation coordination are needed.
  6. Ferranti effect and charging current: On long unloaded or lightly loaded HV lines, receiving-end voltage rises above sending-end voltage due to line capacitance, requiring shunt reactors.
  7. High short-circuit levels: Fault currents are large, so circuit breakers and protective equipment must have high rupturing capacity.

Conclusion: High voltage transmission is technically and economically superior for bulk, long-distance power transfer, but it demands heavy investment in insulation, towers and protective equipment. Hence the voltage level is chosen as a compromise between transmission cost and insulation cost.

Write the functions of current transformer and potential transformer.

Answer

Functions of Current Transformer (CT)

  1. Step down current: It reduces the large primary line current to a small, standard secondary current (usually 1 A or 5 A) in proportion to the primary current, so that measuring instruments and relays can handle it safely.
  2. Insulation / isolation: It insulates the measuring and protective devices from the high-voltage, high-current power circuit, protecting both the operator and the instruments.
  3. Measurement: Its secondary is connected to ammeters, wattmeters, energy meters and power factor meters, which thus measure current without being directly connected to the line.
  4. Protection: It supplies reduced current to protective relays (overcurrent, differential, earth fault relays) so that faults are detected and the circuit breaker trips.
  5. Standardisation: It makes all instruments work at a uniform secondary current (1 A or 5 A), allowing standard ratings of meters and relays.

Functions of Potential Transformer (PT)

  1. Step down voltage: It reduces the high system voltage to a low, standard secondary voltage (usually 63.5 V, 100 V or 110 V) in proportion to the primary voltage.
  2. Insulation / isolation: It isolates the voltmeters, wattmeters, energy meters and relays from the high-voltage line, ensuring safety of personnel and equipment.
  3. Measurement: Its secondary supplies voltmeters, wattmeters, energy meters, synchronising and indicating instruments for voltage measurement.
  4. Protection: It provides reduced voltage signals to voltage-sensitive relays (over/under voltage, directional, distance relays) for protective relaying.
  5. Standardisation: It gives a fixed standard secondary voltage so that instruments and relays of standard rating can be used on any system voltage.

Note: Both CT and PT together are called instrument transformers; the CT is connected in series with the line (secondary nearly short-circuited) and the PT is connected in parallel (secondary nearly open-circuited).

Answer

Circuit Breaker को कार्य (Function of a Circuit Breaker):

(Working Principle of Oil Circuit Breaker):

Why the earthing is needed for electrical appliances? Describe about Transformer body earthing and Neutral earthing.

Answer

Earthing (Grounding) — Need, Transformer Body Earthing and Neutral Earthing

1. Why Earthing is Needed for Electrical Appliances

Earthing means connecting the non-current-carrying metallic parts of an installation (appliance body, motor frame, transformer tank, etc.) to the general mass of earth through a low-resistance path.

It is needed for the following reasons:

  1. Safety of human life. If insulation fails, the metal body of an appliance becomes live. Without earthing, a person touching the body receives the full fault current through his body. With earthing, the body is held at earth potential, so the touch voltage is very small and the person is protected.

  2. Provides a low-resistance fault path. The earth electrode gives a path of very low resistance (generally less than 1 Ω for substations, a few ohms for domestic installations) so that a large fault current flows. This large current immediately operates the fuse or MCB and disconnects the faulty circuit.

  3. Ensures proper operation of protective devices. Fuses, MCBs, ELCBs/RCCBs and relays operate only when sufficient fault current flows. Earthing makes this possible; without it the fault may persist undetected and cause fire.

  4. Limits voltage rise. During lightning surges or switching surges, earthing diverts the surge to earth and limits the potential rise of the equipment, preventing flashover and damage to insulation.

  5. Protection of equipment. It protects motors, transformers, generators and electronic equipment from insulation breakdown, arcing and fire due to leakage currents.

  6. Stability of the system. Neutral earthing fixes the potential of the neutral point, keeps phase-to-earth voltages balanced and limits arcing-ground faults and over-voltages.

  7. Statutory requirement. The Electricity Rules and IEE/NEA standards make earthing compulsory for every installation.

2. Transformer Body Earthing

Meaning: The metallic tank (body) of the transformer, together with its core clamps, radiator, conservator tank, bushing flanges and the operating handle of the tap changer, is connected to an earth electrode. This is also called equipment earthing or protective earthing.

Why it is done:

  • The transformer body is normally at earth potential, but if the winding insulation fails, the high voltage touches the tank. Body earthing keeps the tank at earth potential so that no one touching the tank gets a shock.
  • It provides a return path for the fault current so that the protective relay (Buchholz, differential, over-current) or fuse operates and isolates the transformer.
  • It drains away static charges and lightning surge currents to earth, protecting the winding insulation.
  • It prevents accumulation of static charge on the tank due to oil circulation and keeps the tank potential equal to that of the surrounding earth, avoiding sparking.

How it is done:

  • Two separate earth electrodes (usually copper or GI plate/pipe electrodes) are provided, one on each side of the transformer, and connected to the tank by two separate copper strips (minimum size as per standard, e.g. 25 mm × 6 mm copper or 50 mm × 6 mm GI strip).
  • The two earth leads are taken by different routes so that if one is broken the other still works.
  • The earth resistance of the body earthing should be as low as possible — normally not more than 1 Ω for a substation transformer, and in no case more than 5 Ω.
  • The connection is made by bolted or brazed (preferably brazed/welded) joints, and the joints are painted and protected against corrosion.
  • The tank is also bonded to the neutral earthing of the transformer, but the two earth electrodes are kept separate and interconnected only at the earth mat.

3. Neutral Earthing

Meaning: The neutral point of the transformer (or generator) winding is connected to earth, either directly or through a resistance/reactance. This is also called system earthing.

Types:

  • Solid (direct) earthing — neutral connected straight to earth. Used for LV (400/230 V) distribution and for EHV systems where the earth-fault current is high.
  • Resistance earthing — a resistor limits the earth-fault current. Used in medium-voltage systems and generator neutrals.
  • Reactance earthing — a reactor limits the current.
  • Peterson coil (arc-suppression) earthing — a tuned reactor neutralises the capacitive earth-fault current. Used in cable networks.

Why it is done:

  • It fixes the neutral at earth potential, so the phase-to-earth voltage of a healthy phase does not rise above the normal phase voltage during an earth fault on another phase. This protects insulation.
  • It provides a low-resistance path for earth-fault current, so the faulty phase is quickly isolated by the relay.
  • It limits the voltage of the neutral point with respect to earth, preventing over-voltages and arcing-ground faults.
  • It gives a stable reference for protective relays (earth-fault relay) and for the earthing of the LV system.
  • It reduces the risk of fire and shock in the LV distribution system, since the neutral is held near earth potential.

Difference in brief:

AspectBody EarthingNeutral Earthing
What is earthedMetallic tank/frameNeutral point of winding
PurposeProtect persons from shockProtect insulation and give fault path
Also calledEquipment earthingSystem earthing
Earth resistanceAs low as possible (≤ 1 Ω)As per system design

Conclusion: Earthing is essential for safety of persons and equipment. Transformer body earthing protects anyone touching the tank, while neutral earthing stabilises the system voltage and ensures fast clearance of earth faults. Both must be provided with low earth resistance and maintained periodically.
