The dimension formula for gravitational intensity is ......
A) [LT^-2]
B) [LT]
C) [LT^2]
D) [LT^-4]
Answer
(a) [LT(^{-2})]
Gravitational intensity (field strength) is force per unit mass: (g = F/m), so its SI unit is N/kg = m/s², giving the dimension ([LT^{-2}]).

What is the unit of radiation power density?
A) Watt per meter square
B) Watt per meter
C) Decibel
D) Watt
Answer
(a) Watt per meter square
Radiation power density is the radiated power passing through unit area, so its unit is watt per square metre (W/m²).

Describe Archimedes's Principle. Differentiate between Density and Specific gravity.
2+3=5
Answer
Archimedes's Principle
Statement: When a body is wholly or partly immersed in a fluid at rest, it experiences an upward thrust (buoyant force) equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the immersed part of the body.
Explanation: A body dipped in a liquid is pushed up by the liquid. This upward force is called upthrust or buoyant force. Its magnitude depends on:
- the volume of the body immersed (volume of liquid displaced),
- the density of the liquid,
- the value of at that place.
It does not depend on the mass, shape or density of the body itself.
Formula:
where = volume of liquid displaced, = density of liquid, = acceleration due to gravity.
Condition of floating: A body floats when the upthrust equals its own weight, i.e. weight of body = weight of liquid displaced. This is why a ship made of iron floats while a small iron nail sinks.
Difference between Density and Specific Gravity
| S.N. | Density | Specific Gravity |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | It is the mass per unit volume of a substance. | It is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of water at 4 °C. |
| 2 | Formula: | Formula: |
| 3 | It has a unit: kg/m³ (SI) or g/cm³ (CGS). | It has no unit; it is a pure number. |
| 4 | Its value differs from substance to substance and changes with temperature. | Its value is the same in any system of units. |
| 5 | Example: density of water = 1000 kg/m³ | Example: specific gravity of water = 1 |
Note: Numerically, the density of a substance in g/cm³ is equal to its specific gravity.
