Two taps, A and B, can fill an empty tank in 30 hours and 15 hours respectively. They both were turned on to fill the tank, but tap A was turned off after some time, and tap B took 12 hours to fill the tank. Find out after how much time tap A was turned off?

Answer

Let tap A be turned off after xx hours. Tap B runs for the whole 12 hours, while tap A runs only for xx hours.

Rates: tap A fills 130\frac{1}{30} and tap B fills 115\frac{1}{15} of the tank per hour.

x30+1215=1\frac{x}{30}+\frac{12}{15}=1 x30=1−45=15\frac{x}{30}=1-\frac{4}{5}=\frac{1}{5} x=6x=6

Tap A was turned off after 6 hours.

Check: A fills 630=15\frac{6}{30}=\frac15, B fills 1215=45\frac{12}{15}=\frac45, total =1=1 tank.

Arjun bought two bicycles and he sold the first bicycle at a profit of 40% and the second bicycle at a loss of 15%. If the selling price of both the bicycles is equal i.e. Rs. 7140, what is his overall profit or loss percentage? Find.

Answer

Let the cost price of the first bicycle be Rs xx and the second bicycle be Rs yy.

First bicycle: sold at 40% profit
SP=1.40x=7140SP = 1.40x = 7140 x=71401.40=5100x = \frac{7140}{1.40} = 5100

Profit on first bicycle: 7140−5100=20407140 - 5100 = 2040

Second bicycle: sold at 15% loss
SP=0.85y=7140SP = 0.85y = 7140 y=71400.85=8400y = \frac{7140}{0.85} = 8400

Loss on second bicycle: 8400−7140=12608400 - 7140 = 1260

Total cost price: CP=5100+8400=13500CP = 5100 + 8400 = 13500

Total selling price: SP=7140+7140=14280SP = 7140 + 7140 = 14280

Overall profit: 14280−13500=78014280 - 13500 = 780

Overall profit percentage: 78013500×100=5.78% (approx.)\frac{780}{13500} \times 100 = 5.78\% \text{ (approx.)}

Answer: Arjun made an overall profit of 5.78% (approximately).

Divide Rs. 840 in the ratio 2:3:7.

Answer

Given: Total amount = Rs. 840, ratio = 2 : 3 : 7

Sum of ratio parts: 2+3+7=122 + 3 + 7 = 12

Value of one part: One part=84012=Rs. 70\text{One part} = \frac{840}{12} = \text{Rs. } 70

Shares:

  • First share =2×70== 2 \times 70 = Rs. 140
  • Second share =3×70== 3 \times 70 = Rs. 210
  • Third share =7×70== 7 \times 70 = Rs. 490

Check: 140+210+490=840140 + 210 + 490 = 840 ✓

Answer: The amount is divided as Rs. 140, Rs. 210 and Rs. 490.

A bag contains 2 red, 3 green and 2 blue balls. Two balls are drawn at random. What is the probability that none of the balls drawn is blue? Find.

Answer

Total balls =2+3+2=7=2+3+2=7

Non-blue balls (red + green) =2+3=5=2+3=5

Two balls are drawn at random.

Favourable cases: both balls are non-blue.

P(none is blue)=5C27C2P(\text{none is blue})=\frac{{}^5C_2}{{}^7C_2}
