The dimension formula for gravitational intensity is ...... A) [LT⁻²] B) [LT²] C) [LT] D) [LT⁻¹]

Answer

(a) [LT⁻²]

Gravitational intensity (field strength) is force per unit mass: (g = F/m), so its unit is N/kg = m/s², giving the dimension formula ([LT^{-2}]).

What is the unit of radiation power density? A) Watt per meter square B) Watt per meter C) Decibel D) Watt

Answer

(a) Watt per meter square

Radiation power density is the power radiated per unit area, so its SI unit is watt per square metre (W/m²).

Describe Archimedes's Principle. Differentiate between Density and Specific gravity. 2+3=5

Answer

Archimedes's Principle

Statement: When a body is wholly or partly immersed in a fluid at rest, it experiences an upward thrust (buoyant force) equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the body.

Explanation: When a body is dipped in a liquid, the liquid exerts pressure on all sides of the body. Since pressure increases with depth, the upward pressure on the bottom surface is greater than the downward pressure on the top surface. This difference of pressure produces a net upward force called the upward thrust or buoyant force.

If a body of volume VV is fully immersed in a liquid of density ρ\rho, then:

FB=Vρg=Wdisplaced liquidF_B = V\rho g = W_{\text{displaced liquid}}

Conditions:

  • If weight of body >> buoyant force → body sinks.
  • If weight of body == buoyant force → body floats wholly immersed.
  • If weight of body << buoyant force → body floats partly immersed.

Applications: Ships and boats floating on water, hydrometer, submarine, hot-air balloon, and lactometer.

Difference between Density and Specific Gravity

S.N.DensitySpecific Gravity
1It is the mass per unit volume of a substance.It is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of water at 4 °C.
2Its formula is ρ=mV\rho = \dfrac{m}{V}.Its formula is G=ρsubstanceρwaterG = \dfrac{\rho_{\text{substance}}}{\rho_{\text{water}}}.
3It has a unit: kg/m³ in SI (or g/cm³ in CGS).It has no unit; it is a pure number.
4Its value differs from substance to substance and is never zero.Its value is the same in all systems of units.
5It is an absolute physical quantity.It is a relative (dimensionless) quantity.
6Example: density of water = 1000 kg/m³Example: specific gravity of water = 1

Relation: Density=Specific gravity×density of water\text{Density} = \text{Specific gravity} \times \text{density of water}
