Differentiate between Internet and Intranet. Explain about system software and Application software.
Answer
Difference between Internet and Intranet
| Basis | Internet | Intranet |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | A global public network connecting millions of computers worldwide. | A private network used within a single organisation. |
| Access | Open to anyone with a connection. | Restricted to authorised members of the organisation. |
| Ownership | No single owner; publicly shared. | Owned and controlled by the organisation. |
| Coverage | Worldwide. | Limited to one office, branch or organisation. |
| Security | Less secure; needs firewalls and antivirus. | More secure; protected by firewalls and login control. |
| Users | Unlimited public users. | Limited internal users (staff, management). |
| Purpose | Information sharing, e-mail, e-commerce, social media. | Internal communication, records, circulars, staff notices. |
| Example | Google, Facebook, YouTube. | Bank's internal staff portal, HR system of RBB. |
System Software
System software is the set of programs that controls and manages the computer hardware and provides a platform for running application programs. It works close to the machine and is generally written by manufacturers.
Functions:
- Manages hardware resources such as CPU, memory and I/O devices.
- Provides the user interface (CLI or GUI).
- Controls and schedules jobs, files and peripheral devices.
- Creates an environment in which application software can run.
Types:
- Operating system — Windows, Linux, UNIX, macOS.
- Language translators — compiler, interpreter, assembler.
- Device drivers — programs that operate printers, keyboards, etc.
- Utility programs — antivirus, disk cleaner, backup, backup/restore tools.
Application Software
Application software is the set of programs designed to perform specific user-oriented tasks. It is developed to solve a particular problem or to give a particular service to the user.
Functions:
- Performs a specific job such as accounting, billing, word processing.
- Interacts directly with the end user.
- Depends on system software to run.
Types:
- Packaged (general purpose) — MS Word, MS Excel, Tally, Photoshop.
- Tailored (customised) — software made for a specific organisation, e.g. the core banking system of RBB.
- Utility application — small tools like WinZip, PDF reader.
Difference:
| Basis | System Software | Application Software |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Runs and manages the computer system. | Performs a specific user task. |
| Dependency | Runs independently of application software. | Needs system software to run. |
| User | Generally used by the system/programmer. | Used by the end user. |
| Example | Windows, Linux, compiler. | MS Word, Tally, core banking software. |
In short, system software is the base on which application software works; both together make a computer useful.
