a) State and explain parallelogram law of vector addition. Derive the magnitude and direction of the resultant vector.
b) Differentiate scalar product from the vector product of two vectors with suitable examples.
Answer
a) Parallelogram Law of Vector Addition
Statement: If two vectors acting simultaneously at a point are represented in magnitude and direction by the two adjacent sides of a parallelogram drawn from a point, then their resultant is represented in magnitude and direction by the diagonal of the parallelogram passing through that point.
Explanation: Let two vectors and act at a point O, inclined at an angle . They are represented by the sides OA and OB of a parallelogram OACB. The resultant is represented by the diagonal OC.
Derivation of magnitude:
Drop a perpendicular from C on the extended line of OA, meeting it at N. In right-angled triangle ONC:
Derivation of direction:
Let the resultant make an angle with . In triangle ONC:
Special cases:
- When : (maximum)
- When : (minimum)
- When :
b) Difference between Scalar Product and Vector Product
| Scalar (Dot) Product | Vector (Cross) Product |
|---|---|
| Result is a scalar quantity | Result is a vector quantity |
| Commutative: | Not commutative: |
| Zero when vectors are perpendicular () | Zero when vectors are parallel or antiparallel ( or ) |
| Follows distributive law | Follows distributive law |
| Direction is not required | Direction is perpendicular to the plane of the two vectors |
Examples:
- Scalar product: Work done (a scalar); Power .
- Vector product: Torque ; angular momentum ; magnetic force .
