Compute the approximate value of the integrate ∫11+x2 dx\int \frac{1}{1 + x^2}\,dx by using the composite trapezoidal rule with three points, and compare the result with the actual value. Determine the error formula and numerically verify an upper bound on it.

Answer

Take the integral over [0,1][0,1]: ∫01dx1+x2\displaystyle\int_0^1\frac{dx}{1+x^2}, with three points x0=0, x1=0.5, x2=1x_0=0,\ x_1=0.5,\ x_2=1, so n=2n=2 and h=0.5h=0.5.

xx00.51
f(x)f(x)10.80.5

Trapezoidal approximation

T=h2[f0+2f1+f2]=0.52[1+1.6+0.5]=0.775T=\frac h2\left[f_0+2f_1+f_2\right]=\frac{0.5}{2}\left[1+1.6+0.5\right]=0.775

Actual value: [tan⁡−1x]01=π4=0.7854\left[\tan^{-1}x\right]_0^1=\frac\pi4=0.7854.

The actual error is 0.7854−0.775≈0.01040.7854-0.775\approx0.0104.

Error formula. For the composite trapezoidal rule,

E=−(b−a)12h2f′′(ξ),ξ∈(a,b)E=-\frac{(b-a)}{12}h^2f''(\xi),\qquad \xi\in(a,b)

Here f′′(x)=6x2−2(1+x2)3f''(x)=\dfrac{6x^2-2}{(1+x^2)^3}. Its derivative f′′′(x)=24x(1−x2)(1+x2)4≥0f'''(x)=\dfrac{24x(1-x^2)}{(1+x^2)^4}\ge0 on [0,1][0,1], so f′′f'' increases from f′′(0)=−2f''(0)=-2 to f′′(1)=0.5f''(1)=0.5. Therefore max⁡∣f′′∣=2\max|f''|=2.

∣E∣≤1⋅(0.5)212⋅2=0.512≈0.0417|E|\le\frac{1\cdot(0.5)^2}{12}\cdot2=\frac{0.5}{12}\approx0.0417

The actual error 0.01040.0104 is below the bound 0.04170.0417, which verifies the bound numerically.

If a function f(x)f(x) is defined as:
f(x)=3x2+2f(x) = 3x^2 + 2 if x<1x < 1
f(x)=2x+3f(x) = 2x + 3 if x>1x > 1
f(x)=4f(x) = 4 if x=1x = 1
Discuss the continuity of function at x=1x = 1.

Answer

A function is continuous at x=1x=1 if lim⁡x→1−f(x)=lim⁡x→1+f(x)=f(1)\lim_{x\to1^-}f(x)=\lim_{x\to1^+}f(x)=f(1).

Left-hand limit (x<1x<1): lim⁡x→1−(3x2+2)=3+2=5\lim_{x\to1^-}(3x^2+2)=3+2=5

Right-hand limit (x>1x>1): lim⁡x→1+(2x+3)=2+3=5\lim_{x\to1^+}(2x+3)=2+3=5

So lim⁡x→1f(x)=5\lim_{x\to1}f(x)=5 exists. But f(1)=4≠5f(1)=4\neq 5.

Hence f(x)f(x) is not continuous at x=1x=1. The discontinuity is removable, since redefining f(1)=5f(1)=5 would make the function continuous.

Find the derivative of sin⁡3x\sin 3x by using definition.

Answer

Let f(x)=sin⁡3xf(x)=\sin 3x. By definition, f′(x)=lim⁡h→0sin⁡3(x+h)−sin⁡3xhf'(x)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{\sin 3(x+h)-\sin 3x}{h}

Using sin⁡A−sin⁡B=2cos⁡A+B2sin⁡A−B2\sin A-\sin B=2\cos\frac{A+B}{2}\sin\frac{A-B}{2}:

f′(x)=lim⁡h→02cos⁡(3x+3h2)sin⁡3h2h=lim⁡h→03cos⁡(3x+3h2)⋅sin⁡3h23h2f'(x)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{2\cos\left(3x+\frac{3h}{2}\right)\sin\frac{3h}{2}}{h} =\lim_{h\to0}3\cos\left(3x+\frac{3h}{2}\right)\cdot\frac{\sin\frac{3h}{2}}{\frac{3h}{2}}

As h→0h\to0, sin⁡(3h/2)3h/2→1\frac{\sin(3h/2)}{3h/2}\to1 and cos⁡(3x+3h2)→cos⁡3x\cos\left(3x+\frac{3h}{2}\right)\to\cos3x. Therefore ddx(sin⁡3x)=3cos⁡3x\frac{d}{dx}(\sin 3x)=3\cos 3x

Using L'Hospital's rule evaluate: lim⁡x→∞2x2+3x1+5x2\lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{2x^2 + 3x}{1 + 5x^2}

Answer

The limit has the form ∞∞\frac{\infty}{\infty}, so L'Hospital's rule applies.

lim⁡x→∞2x2+3x1+5x2=lim⁡x→∞4x+310x\lim_{x\to\infty}\frac{2x^2+3x}{1+5x^2}=\lim_{x\to\infty}\frac{4x+3}{10x}

This is again ∞∞\frac{\infty}{\infty}, so apply the rule once more: =lim⁡x→∞410=25=\lim_{x\to\infty}\frac{4}{10}=\frac{2}{5}

If demand function and cost function are given by P(Q)=1−3QP(Q) = 1 - 3Q and C(Q)=Q2−2QC(Q) = Q^2 - 2Q respectively, where QQ is the quantity (number) of the product then find output of the factory for the maximum profit.

Answer

Here P=1−3QP=1-3Q is the price, so

Revenue: R=PQ=Q−3Q2R=PQ=Q-3Q^2

Cost: C=Q2−2QC=Q^2-2Q

Profit: π=R−C=Q−3Q2−Q2+2Q=3Q−4Q2\pi=R-C=Q-3Q^2-Q^2+2Q=3Q-4Q^2

For maximum profit, dπdQ=3−8Q=0\frac{d\pi}{dQ}=3-8Q=0, giving Q=38Q=\frac{3}{8}.

Second derivative: d2πdQ2=−8<0\frac{d^2\pi}{dQ^2}=-8<0, so profit is a maximum.

Output for maximum profit is Q=38Q=\dfrac{3}{8} units. The maximum profit is π=98−916=916\pi=\frac{9}{8}-\frac{9}{16}=\frac{9}{16}.

−8x+7y−4z=−47-8x + 7y - 4z = -47
9x−8y+5z=559x - 8y + 5z = 55

Answer

Homogeneous equations. A system AX=OAX=O in which every constant term on the right-hand side is zero is called a homogeneous system. It always has the trivial solution X=OX=O, and has non-trivial solutions only if ∣A∣=0|A|=0.

Solution by inverse matrix. The system is AX=BAX=B with A=[−221−87−49−85],X=[xyz],B=[−4−4755]A=\begin{bmatrix}-2&2&1\\-8&7&-4\\9&-8&5\end{bmatrix},\quad X=\begin{bmatrix}x\\y\\z\end{bmatrix},\quad B=\begin{bmatrix}-4\\-47\\55\end{bmatrix}

Determinant: ∣A∣=−2(35−32)−2(−40+36)+1(64−63)=−6+8+1=3≠0|A|=-2(35-32)-2(-40+36)+1(64-63)=-6+8+1=3\neq0

so A−1A^{-1} exists.

Cofactors: C11=3,  C12=4,  C13=1C_{11}=3,\;C_{12}=4,\;C_{13}=1 C21=−18,  C22=−19,  C23=2C_{21}=-18,\;C_{22}=-19,\;C_{23}=2 C31=−15,  C32=−16,  C33=2C_{31}=-15,\;C_{32}=-16,\;C_{33}=2

Adjoint (transpose of the cofactor matrix): adj⁡A=[3−18−154−19−16122]\operatorname{adj}A=\begin{bmatrix}3&-18&-15\\4&-19&-16\\1&2&2\end{bmatrix}

A−1=13[3−18−154−19−16122]A^{-1}=\frac13\begin{bmatrix}3&-18&-15\\4&-19&-16\\1&2&2\end{bmatrix}

Then X=A−1BX=A^{-1}B:

State Rolle's Theorem and interpret it geometrically. Verify Rolle's theorem for f(x)=x2−4f(x) = x^2 - 4 in −3≤x≤3-3 \le x \le 3.

Answer

Rolle's theorem. If ff is (i) continuous on [a,b][a,b], (ii) differentiable on (a,b)(a,b), and (iii) f(a)=f(b)f(a)=f(b), then there is at least one point c∈(a,b)c\in(a,b) with f′(c)=0f'(c)=0.

Geometric meaning. If the graph of a continuous, smooth curve has the same height at both end points A(a,f(a))A(a,f(a)) and B(b,f(b))B(b,f(b)), then somewhere between them the curve has a horizontal tangent (parallel to the xx-axis, and to the chord ABAB).

Verification for f(x)=x2−4f(x)=x^2-4 on [−3,3][-3,3].

  1. ff is a polynomial, so it is continuous on [−3,3][-3,3].
  2. f′(x)=2xf'(x)=2x exists everywhere, so ff is differentiable on (−3,3)(-3,3).
  3. f(−3)=9−4=5f(-3)=9-4=5 and f(3)=9−4=5f(3)=9-4=5, so f(−3)=f(3)f(-3)=f(3).

All conditions hold. Now f′(c)=2c=0⇒c=0f'(c)=2c=0\Rightarrow c=0, and 0∈(−3,3)0\in(-3,3).

Hence Rolle's theorem is verified, with c=0c=0.

"A function f(x)f(x) is defined as f(x)={2x+3for −32≤x32f(x) = \begin{cases} 2x + 3 & \text{for } -\frac{3}{2} \leq x \frac{3}{2} \end{cases} show that f(x)f(x) is continuous at x=0x = 0 and discontinuous at x=32x = \frac{3}{2}."

Answer

Taking the definition as f(x)=2x+3f(x)=2x+3 for −32≤x<32-\frac32\le x<\frac32 and f(x)=2x−3f(x)=2x-3 for x≥32x\ge\frac32.

Continuity at x=0x=0. The point 00 lies in the interval where f(x)=2x+3f(x)=2x+3, a polynomial.

f(0)=3,lim⁡x→0−f(x)=lim⁡x→0+f(x)=2(0)+3=3f(0)=3,\qquad \lim_{x\to0^-}f(x)=\lim_{x\to0^+}f(x)=2(0)+3=3

Since lim⁡x→0f(x)=f(0)=3\lim_{x\to0}f(x)=f(0)=3, ff is continuous at x=0x=0.

Discontinuity at x=32x=\frac32.

lim⁡x→32−f(x)=2(32)+3=6,lim⁡x→32+f(x)=2(32)−3=0\lim_{x\to\frac32^-}f(x)=2\left(\tfrac32\right)+3=6,\qquad \lim_{x\to\frac32^+}f(x)=2\left(\tfrac32\right)-3=0

The left-hand and right-hand limits are not equal (6≠06\ne0), so lim⁡x→3/2f(x)\lim_{x\to 3/2}f(x) does not exist. Hence f(x)f(x) is discontinuous at x=32x=\frac32 (a jump discontinuity).

Answer

Differentiate both with respect to tt:

dxdt=a(1+cos⁡t),dydt=asin⁡t\frac{dx}{dt}=a(1+\cos t),\qquad \frac{dy}{dt}=a\sin t

dydx=dy/dtdx/dt=asin⁡ta(1+cos⁡t)=2sin⁡t2cos⁡t22cos⁡2t2=tan⁡t2\frac{dy}{dx}=\frac{dy/dt}{dx/dt}=\frac{a\sin t}{a(1+\cos t)}=\frac{2\sin\frac t2\cos\frac t2}{2\cos^2\frac t2}=\tan\frac t2

State L'Hospital's Rule. Use it to evaluate: lim⁡x→0xex−In(1+x)x2\lim_{x \to 0} \frac{xe^x - In(1+x)}{x^2}

Answer

L'Hospital's Rule. If f(x)f(x) and g(x)g(x) are differentiable near aa and lim⁡x→af(x)g(x)\lim_{x\to a}\frac{f(x)}{g(x)} takes the form 00\frac00 or ∞∞\frac\infty\infty, then lim⁡x→af(x)g(x)=lim⁡x→af′(x)g′(x)\lim_{x\to a}\frac{f(x)}{g(x)}=\lim_{x\to a}\frac{f'(x)}{g'(x)} provided the right-hand limit exists.

Evaluation. At x=0x=0 the numerator is 0⋅1−ln⁡1=00\cdot1-\ln1=0 and the denominator is 00, so the form is 00\frac00.

State Rolle's Theorem. Verify Rolle's Theorem for the function f(x)=x2−9f(x) = x^2 - 9 in the interval −3≤x≤3-3 \leq x \leq 3.

Answer

Rolle's Theorem. If ff is continuous on [a,b][a,b], differentiable on (a,b)(a,b) and f(a)=f(b)f(a)=f(b), then there is at least one c∈(a,b)c\in(a,b) with f′(c)=0f'(c)=0.

Verification for f(x)=x2−9f(x)=x^2-9 on [−3,3][-3,3].

  1. ff is a polynomial, so it is continuous on [−3,3][-3,3] and differentiable on (−3,3)(-3,3).
  2. f(−3)=9−9=0f(-3)=9-9=0 and f(3)=9−9=0f(3)=9-9=0, so f(−3)=f(3)f(-3)=f(3).

All conditions hold. Now f′(x)=2x=0f'(x)=2x=0 gives c=0c=0, and 0∈(−3,3)0\in(-3,3).

Hence Rolle's Theorem is verified, with c=0c=0.

Solve the following system by Gauss-Seidel method: −4x+y−z=−83x+6y+2z=1x−y+3z=2\begin{aligned} -4x + y - z &= -8 \\ 3x + 6y + 2z &= 1 \\ x - y + 3z &= 2 \end{aligned}

Answer

The system is rearranged so that the diagonal terms dominate:

x=8+y−z4,y=1−3x−2z6,z=2−x+y3x=\frac{8+y-z}{4},\qquad y=\frac{1-3x-2z}{6},\qquad z=\frac{2-x+y}{3}

Start with x=y=z=0x=y=z=0 and always use the latest values.

What do you mean by stationary points and inflection points? Using derivatives, find two numbers whose sum is 20 and sum of whose squares is minimum.

Answer

Stationary points. A point x=cx=c in the domain of ff where f′(c)=0f'(c)=0 is a stationary point (the tangent is horizontal). It may be a local maximum, a local minimum, or neither.

Inflection point. A point where the curve changes its concavity, i.e. f′′f'' changes sign. At such a point f′′(c)=0f''(c)=0 (when f′′f'' exists), and the graph crosses its tangent.

Two numbers with sum 20 and minimum sum of squares. Let the numbers be xx and 20−x20-x, and

S(x)=x2+(20−x)2S(x)=x^2+(20-x)^2

S′(x)=2x−2(20−x)=4x−40=0 ⇒ x=10S'(x)=2x-2(20-x)=4x-40=0\ \Rightarrow\ x=10

S′′(x)=4>0S''(x)=4>0

so SS is a minimum at x=10x=10. The numbers are 1010 and 1010, and the minimum sum of squares is 102+102=20010^2+10^2=200.

Using Simpson's 13\frac{1}{3} rule evaluate ∫0111+xdx\int_0^1 \frac{1}{1+x} {dx} with 3 points of intervals. Find error of approximation. How many points are to be considered to make the approximation value within 10-5?

Answer

Take 3 points x0=0, x1=0.5, x2=1x_0=0,\ x_1=0.5,\ x_2=1, so n=2n=2 and h=0.5h=0.5.

xx00.51
f(x)=11+xf(x)=\frac1{1+x}10.666670.5

∫01dx1+x≈h3[f0+4f1+f2]=0.53[1+2.66667+0.5]=0.69444\int_0^1\frac{dx}{1+x}\approx\frac h3\left[f_0+4f_1+f_2\right]=\frac{0.5}{3}\left[1+2.66667+0.5\right]=0.69444

Error. The exact value is ln⁡2=0.69315\ln2=0.69315, so the actual error is 0.69444−0.69315≈0.00130.69444-0.69315\approx0.0013.

The error bound is ∣E∣≤(b−a)h4180max⁡∣f(4)(x)∣,f(4)(x)=24(1+x)5,max⁡[0,1]∣f(4)∣=24|E|\le\frac{(b-a)h^4}{180}\max|f^{(4)}(x)|,\qquad f^{(4)}(x)=\frac{24}{(1+x)^5},\quad \max_{[0,1]}|f^{(4)}|=24

∣E∣≤24h4180=2h415=2(0.0625)15≈0.0083|E|\le\frac{24h^4}{180}=\frac{2h^4}{15}=\frac{2(0.0625)}{15}\approx0.0083

The actual error (0.00130.0013) is within this bound.

Points needed for accuracy 10−510^{-5}.

2h415≤10−5 ⇒ h4≤7.5×10−5 ⇒ h≤0.0931\frac{2h^4}{15}\le10^{-5}\ \Rightarrow\ h^4\le7.5\times10^{-5}\ \Rightarrow\ h\le0.0931

n=1h≥10.74n=\frac1h\ge10.74

Simpson's rule needs an even nn, so n=12n=12 (check: h=112h=\frac1{12} gives E≤6.4×10−6E\le6.4\times10^{-6}). That is 1212 subintervals, i.e. 1313 points.

Verify Rolle's theorem for the function f(x)=sin⁡x,  x∈[0,π]f(x) = \sin x,\;x\in[0,\pi] and find the point on the curve where the tangent is parallel to the xx-axis.

Answer

Verification. f(x)=sin⁡xf(x)=\sin x is continuous on [0,π][0,\pi] and differentiable on (0,π)(0,\pi), and f(0)=sin⁡0=0=sin⁡π=f(π)f(0)=\sin0=0=\sin\pi=f(\pi). All the conditions of Rolle's theorem hold.

f′(x)=cos⁡x=0 ⇒ x=π2∈(0,π)f'(x)=\cos x=0\ \Rightarrow\ x=\frac\pi2\in(0,\pi)

so c=π2c=\frac\pi2 exists and Rolle's theorem is verified.

Point of the curve. The tangent is parallel to the xx-axis where f′(c)=0f'(c)=0, i.e. at c=π2c=\frac\pi2, where y=sin⁡π2=1y=\sin\frac\pi2=1. The point is (π2, 1)\left(\dfrac\pi2,\,1\right).

Find maximum and minimum values of the function f(x)=x3+6x2+9x−2.f(x) = x^3 + 6x^2 + 9x - 2. Also find the point of inflection, if any.

Answer

f(x)=x3+6x2+9x−2f(x)=x^3+6x^2+9x-2

f′(x)=3x2+12x+9=3(x+1)(x+3)=0 ⇒ x=−3, −1f'(x)=3x^2+12x+9=3(x+1)(x+3)=0\ \Rightarrow\ x=-3,\ -1

f′′(x)=6x+12f''(x)=6x+12

  • At x=−3x=-3: f′′(−3)=−6<0f''(-3)=-6<0, so there is a maximum: f(−3)=−27+54−27−2=−2f(-3)=-27+54-27-2=-2.
  • At x=−1x=-1: f′′(−1)=6>0f''(-1)=6>0, so there is a minimum: f(−1)=−1+6−9−2=−6f(-1)=-1+6-9-2=-6.

Point of inflection. f′′(x)=0f''(x)=0 gives x=−2x=-2, and f′′f'' changes sign from negative to positive there. Also f(−2)=−8+24−18−2=−4f(-2)=-8+24-18-2=-4.

Hence the maximum value is −2-2 (at x=−3x=-3), the minimum value is −6-6 (at x=−1x=-1), and the inflection point is (−2,−4)(-2,-4).

Answer

(a) Let u=x2+5xu=x^2+5x, so du=(2x+5) dxdu=(2x+5)\,dx:

∫2x+5x2+5x dx=∫u−1/2du=2x2+5x+C\int\frac{2x+5}{\sqrt{x^2+5x}}\,dx=\int u^{-1/2}du=2\sqrt{x^2+5x}+C

(b) Integrate by parts with u=log⁡xu=\log x, dv=e2xdxdv=e^{2x}dx (so v=e2x2v=\frac{e^{2x}}2):

∫e2xlog⁡x dx=e2xlog⁡x2−12∫e2xx dx\int e^{2x}\log x\,dx=\frac{e^{2x}\log x}{2}-\frac12\int\frac{e^{2x}}{x}\,dx

The remaining integral is not an elementary function; it is the exponential integral, ∫e2xxdx=Ei(2x)\int\frac{e^{2x}}{x}dx=\mathrm{Ei}(2x). Hence

∫e2xlog⁡x dx=e2xlog⁡x2−12 Ei(2x)+C\int e^{2x}\log x\,dx=\frac{e^{2x}\log x}{2}-\frac12\,\mathrm{Ei}(2x)+C

Define pivot element, pivot column, and consistency in a system of equations. Using the simplex method, maximize F=5x−3yF = 5x - 3y subject to 3x+2y≤=6,−x+3y≥=−4,x≥0,y≥=0.3x + 2y \le = 6,\\ -x + 3y \ge = -4,\\ x \ge 0,\quad y \ge = 0.

Answer

Definitions

  • Pivot column: in a simplex tableau, the column with the most negative entry in the objective row; it identifies the entering variable.
  • Pivot element: the entry where the pivot column meets the pivot row (the row with the smallest non-negative ratio of RHS to pivot-column entry). The tableau is row-reduced about this entry.
  • Consistency: a system of equations is consistent if it has at least one solution (unique or infinitely many), and inconsistent if it has none. Equivalently, rank⁡(A)=rank⁡[A∣b]\operatorname{rank}(A)=\operatorname{rank}[A|b].

Simplex solution. Maximize F=5x−3yF=5x-3y. The second constraint −x+3y≥−4-x+3y\ge-4 becomes x−3y≤4x-3y\le4. Constraints:

a. Verify Lagrange’s mean value theorem for the function f(x)=x−1,x∈[1,3].f(x) = \sqrt{x - 1},\quad x \in [1,3]. b. Solve the differential equation x ydydx=x2+y2.x\,y\frac{dy}{dx} = x^2 + y^2.

Answer

(a) Lagrange's Mean Value Theorem: if ff is continuous on [a,b][a,b] and differentiable on (a,b)(a,b), there is c∈(a,b)c\in(a,b) with f′(c)=f(b)−f(a)b−af'(c)=\dfrac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}.

f(x)=x−1f(x)=\sqrt{x-1} is continuous on [1,3][1,3] and differentiable on (1,3)(1,3) with f′(x)=12x−1f'(x)=\dfrac1{2\sqrt{x-1}}.

f(1)=0,f(3)=2,f(3)−f(1)3−1=22f(1)=0,\quad f(3)=\sqrt2,\quad \frac{f(3)-f(1)}{3-1}=\frac{\sqrt2}{2}

12c−1=22 ⇒ c−1=12 ⇒ c−1=12 ⇒ c=32\frac1{2\sqrt{c-1}}=\frac{\sqrt2}2\ \Rightarrow\ \sqrt{c-1}=\frac1{\sqrt2}\ \Rightarrow\ c-1=\frac12\ \Rightarrow\ c=\frac32

Since c=32∈(1,3)c=\frac32\in(1,3), the theorem is verified.

(b) xydydx=x2+y2⇒dydx=x2+y2xyxy\dfrac{dy}{dx}=x^2+y^2\Rightarrow\dfrac{dy}{dx}=\dfrac{x^2+y^2}{xy} (homogeneous). Put y=vxy=vx:

A function f(x)f(x) is defined asf(x)={2x+3for x1f(x) = \begin{cases} 2x + 3 & \text{for } x 1 \end{cases} Is the function f(x)f(x) continuous at x=1x = 1? If not, how can you make it continuous at x=1x = 1?

Answer

Taking the definition as f(x)=2x+3f(x)=2x+3 for x<1x<1 and f(x)=x+4f(x)=x+4 for x>1x>1, with f(1)f(1) not defined.

lim⁡x→1−f(x)=2(1)+3=5,lim⁡x→1+f(x)=1+4=5\lim_{x\to1^-}f(x)=2(1)+3=5,\qquad \lim_{x\to1^+}f(x)=1+4=5

The limit exists and equals 55, but f(1)f(1) is not defined, so the condition f(1)=lim⁡x→1f(x)f(1)=\lim_{x\to1}f(x) fails. Hence ff is not continuous at x=1x=1 (a removable discontinuity).

Making it continuous. Define f(1)=5f(1)=5. Then lim⁡x→1f(x)=f(1)\lim_{x\to1}f(x)=f(1) and ff becomes continuous at x=1x=1.

State Mean Value Theorem. Give its geometrical meaning. Verify the Mean Value Theorem for the function f(x)=x3+x2−6xf(x) = x^3 + x^2 - 6x in the interval [−1,4][-1, 4].

Answer

Mean Value Theorem. If ff is continuous on [a,b][a,b] and differentiable on (a,b)(a,b), there exists c∈(a,b)c\in(a,b) such that f′(c)=f(b)−f(a)b−af'(c)=\frac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}

Geometrical meaning. There is at least one point on the curve between A(a,f(a))A(a,f(a)) and B(b,f(b))B(b,f(b)) at which the tangent is parallel to the chord ABAB.

Verification. f(x)=x3+x2−6xf(x)=x^3+x^2-6x is a polynomial, hence continuous on [−1,4][-1,4] and differentiable on (−1,4)(-1,4).

f(−1)=−1+1+6=6,f(4)=64+16−24=56,f(4)−f(−1)4−(−1)=505=10f(-1)=-1+1+6=6,\qquad f(4)=64+16-24=56,\qquad \frac{f(4)-f(-1)}{4-(-1)}=\frac{50}5=10

f′(x)=3x2+2x−6=10 ⇒ 3x2+2x−16=0 ⇒ x=−2±146=2 or −83f'(x)=3x^2+2x-6=10\ \Rightarrow\ 3x^2+2x-16=0\ \Rightarrow\ x=\frac{-2\pm14}{6}=2\ \text{or}\ -\frac83

Only c=2c=2 lies in (−1,4)(-1,4), so the theorem is verified.

Examine the consistency of the system. Solve it by using Gauss elimination method. {3x+y+z=53x−4y+z=−23x+y−3z=−1\begin{cases} 3x + y + z = 5 \\ 3x - 4y + z = -2 \\ 3x + y - 3z = -1 \end{cases}

Answer

Augmented matrix

[31153−41−231−3−1]\left[\begin{array}{ccc|c}3&1&1&5\\3&-4&1&-2\\3&1&-3&-1\end{array}\right]

Apply R2→R2−R1R_2\to R_2-R_1 and R3→R3−R1R_3\to R_3-R_1:

[31150−50−700−4−6]\left[\begin{array}{ccc|c}3&1&1&5\\0&-5&0&-7\\0&0&-4&-6\end{array}\right]

Consistency. The rank of the coefficient matrix is 33, the rank of the augmented matrix is 33, and this equals the number of unknowns. The system is consistent with a unique solution.

Back-substitution

−4z=−6⇒z=32,−5y=−7⇒y=75-4z=-6\Rightarrow z=\frac32,\qquad -5y=-7\Rightarrow y=\frac75

3x=5−y−z=5−75−32=2110⇒x=7103x=5-y-z=5-\frac75-\frac32=\frac{21}{10}\Rightarrow x=\frac7{10}

x=0.7,y=1.4,z=1.5x=0.7,\quad y=1.4,\quad z=1.5

Using simplex method, find the optimal solution of the following linear programming problem. Minimize Z=10x+15yZ = 10x + 15y. Subject to {x+y≥85x+3y≥30x≥0, y≥0\begin{cases} x + y \geq 8 \\ 5x + 3y \geq 30 \\ x \geq 0, \, y \geq 0 \end{cases}

Answer

Minimize Z=10x+15yZ=10x+15y subject to x+y≥8x+y\ge8, 5x+3y≥305x+3y\ge30, x,y≥0x,y\ge0.

The simplex method is applied to the dual problem. Maximize W=8u+30vW=8u+30v subject to

u+5v≤10,u+3v≤15,u,v≥0u+5v\le10,\qquad u+3v\le15,\qquad u,v\ge0

(the dual variables u,vu,v belong to the two constraints; the dual's right-hand sides are the costs 10 and 15). With slack variables s1,s2s_1,s_2:

Basisuuvvs1s_1s2s_2RHSRatio
s1s_11510102
s2s_21301155
WW-8-30000

vv enters, s1s_1 leaves.

Basisuuvvs1s_1s2s_2RHSRatio
vv1/511/50210
s2s_22/50-3/51922.5
WW-206060

uu enters, vv leaves.

Basisuuvvs1s_1s2s_2RHS
uu151010
s2s_20-2-115
WW0108080

The objective row is non-negative, so Wmax⁡=80W_{\max}=80. The values of the primal variables are read from the slack columns of the objective row: x=8x=8 and y=0y=0.

Check: x+y=8≥8x+y=8\ge8, 5x+3y=40≥305x+3y=40\ge30, and Z=10(8)+15(0)=80Z=10(8)+15(0)=80. At the other corner points (3,5)(3,5) and (0,10)(0,10), Z=105Z=105 and 150150.

x=8,y=0,Zmin⁡=80x=8,\quad y=0,\quad Z_{\min}=80

Solve the following: a) dydx−3y=x2\frac{dy}{dx} - 3y = x^2
b) x dy−y dx=x3y dyx\,dy - y\,dx = x^3 y\,dy

Answer

(a) dydx−3y=x2\dfrac{dy}{dx}-3y=x^2 is linear with P=−3P=-3. The integrating factor is e∫−3dx=e−3xe^{\int-3dx}=e^{-3x}:

ddx(ye−3x)=x2e−3x\frac{d}{dx}\left(ye^{-3x}\right)=x^2e^{-3x}

Integrating by parts twice,

∫x2e−3xdx=−e−3x(x23+2x9+227)+C\int x^2e^{-3x}dx=-e^{-3x}\left(\frac{x^2}{3}+\frac{2x}{9}+\frac2{27}\right)+C

y=Ce3x−x23−2x9−227y=Ce^{3x}-\frac{x^2}3-\frac{2x}9-\frac2{27}

(b) x dy−y dx=x3y dyx\,dy-y\,dx=x^3y\,dy. Treat xx as a function of yy: x−ydxdy=x3yx-y\dfrac{dx}{dy}=x^3y, i.e.

dxdy−xy=−x3\frac{dx}{dy}-\frac xy=-x^3

This is a Bernoulli equation. Divide by x3x^3 and let u=x−2u=x^{-2}, so dudy=−2x−3dxdy\frac{du}{dy}=-2x^{-3}\frac{dx}{dy}:

dudy+2uy=2\frac{du}{dy}+\frac{2u}{y}=2

The integrating factor is y2y^2:

uy2=∫2y2dy=2y33+Cuy^2=\int2y^2dy=\frac{2y^3}{3}+C

y2x2=2y33+C\frac{y^2}{x^2}=\frac{2y^3}{3}+C

a) Use Simpson's 13\frac{1}{3} Rule to evaluate ∫0111+x2dx\int_0^1 \frac{1}{1+x^2} dx taking n=4n = 4. Also find the error. b) A man who has 130 m of fencing material wishes to enclose a rectangular garden. Find the maximum area he can enclose.

Answer

(a) For n=4n=4, h=1−04=0.25h=\frac{1-0}{4}=0.25, and f(x)=11+x2f(x)=\frac1{1+x^2}:

xx00.250.50.751
f(x)f(x)10.941180.80.640.5

I≈h3[f0+f4+4(f1+f3)+2f2]=0.253[1.5+4(1.58118)+1.6]=9.4247112≈0.78539I\approx\frac h3\left[f_0+f_4+4(f_1+f_3)+2f_2\right]=\frac{0.25}3\left[1.5+4(1.58118)+1.6\right]=\frac{9.42471}{12}\approx0.78539

The exact value is tan⁡−11=π4=0.785398\tan^{-1}1=\frac\pi4=0.785398, so the error is ≈0.000006\approx0.000006 (≈6×10−6\approx6\times10^{-6}).

(b) Let the length and width be ll and ww. Then 2(l+w)=1302(l+w)=130, so l+w=65l+w=65 and w=65−lw=65-l.

A=l(65−l)=65l−l2,A′=65−2l=0⇒l=32.5,A′′=−2<0A=l(65-l)=65l-l^2,\qquad A'=65-2l=0\Rightarrow l=32.5,\qquad A''=-2<0

so the area is a maximum. Then w=32.5w=32.5 (a square) and

Amax⁡=32.5×32.5=1056.25 m2A_{\max}=32.5\times32.5=1056.25\ \text{m}^2
