Design an Asynchronous MOD-12 Counter.

Similar questions: Design an asynchronous MOD-88 counter (2010 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-03 counter (2011 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-440 counter (2012 AD)

Answer

A MOD-12 counter counts 0 to 11 and then returns to 0. The number of flip-flops needed is nn with 2n≥122^n \ge 12, so n=4n = 4 (23=8<12≤162^3 = 8 < 12 \le 16).

Design: Use four negative-edge triggered J-K flip-flops with J=K=1J = K = 1 (toggle mode). Connect them as an asynchronous (ripple) counter: the external clock drives FF0, and each QQ drives the clock of the next flip-flop.

The counter would run 0 to 15, so it is forced back to 0 when the count 12 (11001100, Q3=Q2=1Q_3 = Q_2 = 1) appears. A NAND gate with inputs Q3Q_3 and Q2Q_2 drives the active-low asynchronous CLEAR inputs of all flip-flops.

Design an asynchronous MOD-88 counter.

Similar questions: Design an Asynchronous MOD-12 Counter (2009 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-03 counter (2011 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-440 counter (2012 AD)

Answer

Number of flip-flops nn: 2n≥882^n \ge 88. Since 26=64<88≤128=272^6 = 64 < 88 \le 128 = 2^7, n=7n = 7.

Design: Use seven negative-edge triggered J-K flip-flops with J=K=1J = K = 1, connected as a ripple counter: the clock drives FF0, and each QiQ_i drives the clock of the next flip-flop. The counter would count 0 to 127, so it must be cleared when the count reaches 88.

Decimal 88 in binary:

88=64+16+8=10110002(Q6Q5Q4Q3Q2Q1Q0)88 = 64 + 16 + 8 = 1011000_2 \quad (Q_6Q_5Q_4Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0)

The flip-flops at 1 are Q6,Q4,Q3Q_6, Q_4, Q_3. A 3-input NAND gate with inputs Q6,Q4,Q3Q_6, Q_4, Q_3 drives the active-low CLEAR of all seven flip-flops. No smaller count has all three of these outputs at 1 (the first such count is 88 itself), so the counter is cleared exactly at 88.

CLK --> [FF0]-->[FF1]-->[FF2]-->[FF3]-->[FF4]-->[FF5]-->[FF6]
         J=K=1 each                Q3          Q4            Q6
                                    \           |           /
                                     +-- NAND(Q6, Q4, Q3) --+---> to CLR of all FFs

The counter counts 0 to 87 (88 states) and 88 appears only momentarily before the reset. The output frequency is f/88f/88.

Design an asynchronous MOD-03 counter.

Similar questions: Design an Asynchronous MOD-12 Counter (2009 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-88 counter (2010 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-440 counter (2012 AD)

Answer

A MOD-3 counter counts 0,1,20,1,2 and then returns to 00.

Number of flip-flops: 2n≥32^n \ge 3 gives n=2n = 2. Use two JK (or T) flip-flops with J=K=1J=K=1 so each toggles.

Connections (asynchronous / ripple):

  • The external clock drives FF0 (output Q0Q_0).
  • Q0Q_0 drives the clock of FF1 (output Q1Q_1).
  • A 2-input NAND gate takes Q1Q_1 and Q0Q_0 and its output goes to the active-low CLEAR inputs of both flip-flops.

Operation:

Clock pulseQ1Q0Q_1Q_0
000
101
210
311 (momentary) then reset to 00

When the count reaches 1111 (decimal 3), the NAND output goes low and clears both flip-flops almost immediately. The state 1111 lasts only for a very short time, so the stable states are 00→01→10→0000 \to 01 \to 10 \to 00, i.e. MOD-3. The output frequency is f/3f/3.

Design an asynchronous MOD-440 counter.

Similar questions: Design an Asynchronous MOD-12 Counter (2009 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-88 counter (2010 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-03 counter (2011 AD)

Answer

Number of flip-flops: 28=256<440≤29=5122^8 = 256 < 440 \le 2^9 = 512, so 9 flip-flops (Q8Q_8 to Q0Q_0) are needed.

Design: use 9 JK flip-flops with J=K=1J=K=1 (toggle mode), connected as a ripple counter. The clock goes to FF0, and each QnQ_n clocks the next flip-flop.

Reset decoding: the counter must return to 0 when the count reaches 440440.

440=256+128+32+16+8=1101110002440 = 256+128+32+16+8 = 110111000_2

so Q8=1,Q7=1,Q6=0,Q5=1,Q4=1,Q3=1,Q2=Q1=Q0=0Q_8=1, Q_7=1, Q_6=0, Q_5=1, Q_4=1, Q_3=1, Q_2=Q_1=Q_0=0.

Only the 1s are decoded. The first time all of Q8,Q7,Q5,Q4,Q3Q_8, Q_7, Q_5, Q_4, Q_3 are 1 is exactly at count 440 (smaller counts do not set all of these bits). Feed these five outputs to a 5-input NAND gate. Its output goes to the active-low CLEAR (reset) inputs of all nine flip-flops.

Operation: the counter counts 00 to 439439. At count 440 the NAND output goes low and resets all flip-flops, so 440 is a very brief transient state and the stable cycle has 440 states (00 to 439439): MOD-440. The output frequency is f/440f/440.

Design an asynchronous MOD-156 counter.

Similar questions: Design an Asynchronous MOD-12 Counter (2009 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-88 counter (2010 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-03 counter (2011 AD)

Answer

Number of flip-flops: 27=128<156≤28=2562^7 = 128 < 156 \le 2^8 = 256, so 8 flip-flops (Q7Q_7 to Q0Q_0) are needed.

Design: 8 JK flip-flops with J=K=1J=K=1 (toggle) connected as a ripple counter: the external clock feeds FF0 and each QnQ_n clocks the next flip-flop.

Reset decoding:

156=128+16+8+4=100111002156 = 128+16+8+4 = 10011100_2

So Q7=1,Q4=1,Q3=1,Q2=1Q_7=1, Q_4=1, Q_3=1, Q_2=1, and the others are 0. The first count that makes Q7,Q4,Q3,Q2Q_7, Q_4, Q_3, Q_2 all 1 is exactly 156. Connect these four outputs to a 4-input NAND gate. The NAND output goes to the active-low CLEAR inputs of all eight flip-flops.

Operation: the counter counts 0,1,…,1550,1,\dots,155. When it reaches 156, the NAND output goes low and clears all flip-flops to 00000000 immediately, so 156 appears only momentarily. The counter therefore has 156 stable states: MOD-156, and the output frequency is f/156f/156.

Design MOD 33 asynchronous counter.

Similar questions: Design an Asynchronous MOD-12 Counter (2009 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-88 counter (2010 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-03 counter (2011 AD)

Answer

A MOD-33 counter counts 00 to 3232 and then resets, giving 33 states. The number of flip-flops nn must satisfy 2n≥332^n\ge33, so n=6n=6 (25=32<33<642^5=32<33<64).

Design.

  1. Use six negative-edge triggered JK flip-flops (or T flip-flops) with J=K=1J=K=1, so each toggles on every falling clock edge at its clock input.
  2. Connect the external clock to FF0, and Q0→Q_0\to clock of FF1, Q1→Q_1\to clock of FF2, and so on up to FF5. This is a ripple (asynchronous) counter, counting up in binary.
  3. The natural count goes 0,1,…,320,1,\dots,32 (1000002100000_2). The counter must reset on the next state, 33 = 1000012100001_2. This is the first state in which Q5=1Q_5=1 and Q0=1Q_0=1 at the same time, so the decode is unique.
  4. Connect a 2-input NAND gate to Q5Q_5 and Q0Q_0. Its output goes to the active-low asynchronous CLEAR inputs of all six flip-flops.

Operation. When the count reaches 33 the NAND output goes low and immediately clears all flip-flops to 000000. The state 33 therefore lasts only a very short time (a glitch), and the stable states are 00 to 3232, which is exactly 33 states.

1000001
......

32100000
33 (momentary)100001, then reset to 000000

The output frequency at Q5Q_5 is not exactly f/33f/33 because the state 33 is only a transient, but the counter has modulus 33.

Design MOD-33 Asynchronous Counter.

Similar questions: Design an Asynchronous MOD-12 Counter (2009 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-88 counter (2010 AD) · Design an asynchronous MOD-03 counter (2011 AD)

Answer

A MOD-33 counter has 33 states (00 to 3232), so nn flip-flops with 2n≥332^n\ge33 are needed: n=6n=6.

Design

  1. Six negative-edge triggered JK flip-flops with J=K=1J=K=1 (toggle mode). The clock drives FF0 and each QkQ_{k} drives the clock of the next flip-flop (ripple counter).
  2. The counter counts up in binary: 000000000000 to 100000100000 (32). The next count, 33 = 100001100001, is the first state with Q5=1Q_5=1 and Q0=1Q_0=1 together.
  3. A 2-input NAND gate with inputs Q5Q_5 and Q0Q_0 drives the active-low CLEAR inputs of all six flip-flops. As soon as the count reaches 33 the NAND output goes low and clears the counter to 000000000000.

Count sequence

32100000
33100001 (momentary), cleared to 000000

The stable states are 00 to 3232, so the counter has modulus 33.

What is the minimum number of inverters required to find the 2's complement of (10110000)2(10110000)_2?

Similar questions: What is the minimum number of inverters (2011 AD)

Answer

3 inverters.

To find the 2's complement, copy all bits up to and including the first (least significant) 1 and invert only the bits to its left.

10110000→0101000010110000 \rightarrow 01010000

The lowest 1 is at bit 4, so the bits 00000000 and that 1 are copied unchanged, and only the 3 higher bits (101)(101) are inverted, which needs 3 inverters. (The usual method, 1's complement followed by adding 1, needs 8 inverters and an adder.)

You are provided with a bit sequence 1101 to operate with serial in parallel out register. Draw the circuit diagram and functional table to illustrate the procedure to store and retrieve those bits.

Similar questions: You are provided with a bit sequence (2013 AD)

Answer

A serial-in parallel-out (SIPO) register is used. The 4 bits are entered serially, one per clock pulse, and then read together at the parallel outputs.

Circuit (4 D flip-flops):

Serial in --> [D FF0 Q0] --> [D FF1 Q1] --> [D FF2 Q2] --> [D FF3 Q3]
                  |              |              |              |
                 Q0             Q1             Q2             Q3   (parallel outputs)
CLK -------------- common to all four flip-flops ----------------
CLR -------------- common clear

Storing 1101 (the first bit, 1, is entered first):

Clock pulseSerial inQ0Q1Q2Q3Q_0Q_1Q_2Q_3
Clear-0000
111000
211100
300110
411011

After 4 clock pulses, Q3Q2Q1Q0=1101Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0 = 1101, so the whole word is stored with the first bit in Q3Q_3.

Retrieving: all four bits are available at the same time at Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0 after the 4th pulse and can be read in parallel. Retrieval needs no further clock pulses. Applying CLR resets the register for the next word.

Design a synchronous sequential circuit using T flip flop with one input A and an output B. The input A is a serial message and the system reads A one bit at time. The output B=1 whenever the pattern 101 is encountered in the serial message.
For example, if input: 0101011101 then output: 0001010001

Similar questions: Design a synchronous sequential circuit using D (2011 AD)

Answer

This is an overlapping 101 detector, a Mealy machine (the example shows overlap: the 1 ending one pattern starts the next).

States: S0 = no useful bits, S1 = last bit "1", S2 = last two bits "10". Encode with Q1Q0Q_1Q_0: S0 = 00, S1 = 01, S2 = 10 (11 unused, don't care).

State diagram (input A / output B):

S0 --0/0--> S0        S1 --0/0--> S2
S0 --1/0--> S1        S1 --1/0--> S1
S2 --0/0--> S0        S2 --1/1--> S1

State table with T excitations (T=Q⊕QnextT = Q \oplus Q_{next}):

00101001
01010011
01101000
10000010
10101111
11xxxxxx

K-map simplification (using the don't cares):

T1=Q1+Q0A′T_1 = Q_1 + Q_0A' T0=Q0⊕AT_0 = Q_0 \oplus A B=Q1AB = Q_1A

Circuit: Two T flip-flops with a common clock. T1T_1 is an OR of Q1Q_1 and the AND of Q0Q_0 and A′A'; T0T_0 is an XOR of Q0Q_0 and AA; the output BB is an AND of Q1Q_1 and AA.

Check with input 0101011101: the states go S0, S1, S2, S1(out 1), S2, S1(out 1), S1, S1, S2, S0... which gives the output 0001010001, as required.

Why Gray Code is used in K-map instead of binary code?

Similar questions: Why gray codes are used in K-map (2017 AD)

Answer

Gray code changes only one bit between adjacent values. Labelling the K-map rows and columns in Gray order (00,01,11,1000,01,11,10) makes physically adjacent cells differ in exactly one variable, so they can be grouped and the differing variable eliminated. Binary order (00,01,10,1100,01,10,11) would put cells such as 0101 and 1010 next to each other although they differ in two variables, so grouping would give wrong results.

ClockDinD_{in}Q2Q_2Q1Q_1Q0Q_0
Initial-000
11100
20010
31101

After 3 clock pulses, Q2Q1Q0=101Q_2Q_1Q_0 = 101 is stored.

Retrieve operation: with no further input (Din=0D_{in}=0), three more clock pulses shift the bits out at Q0Q_0:

ClockQ2Q_2Q1Q_1Q0Q_0 (output)
4010
5001
6000

The output sequence seen at Q0Q_0 is 1,0,11,0,1 (the first bit in the first out). The first stored bit is already at Q0Q_0 after pulse 3, and the remaining bits appear after pulses 4 and 5.

Timing diagram: each stage's waveform is the input waveform delayed by one clock period per stage; Q2Q_2 follows DinD_{in} after clock 1, Q1Q_1 after clock 2, Q0Q_0 after clock 3. Storing and reading 3 bits therefore takes 3 clocks each.

If you have five bit of data to insert into a shift register all at once and you need to extract these data one bit at a time, which shift register will you suggest? Design a circuit diagram for your selection and explain its operation.

Similar questions: If you have 4-bit of data to (2015 AD)

Answer

The 5 bits are loaded all at once (in parallel) and taken out one bit at a time (serially), so a Parallel-In Serial-Out (PISO) shift register is suitable.

Circuit: five D flip-flops FF0…FF4FF_0\ldots FF_4 share a common clock. The D input of each flip-flop (except the first) is fed from a 2-to-1 selector (two ANDs and an OR) controlled by a SHIFT/LOAD‾SHIFT/\overline{LOAD} line. With SHIFT/LOAD‾=0SHIFT/\overline{LOAD}=0 the parallel data D0…D4D_0\ldots D_4 enter the flip-flop inputs; with SHIFT/LOAD‾=1SHIFT/\overline{LOAD}=1 each flip-flop takes the output of its neighbour, i.e. Di=Qi+1D_i=Q_{i+1}. The serial output is taken from the last flip-flop's QQ.

D4  D3  D2  D1  D0   (parallel inputs)
 |   |   |   |   |
[MUX][MUX][MUX][MUX]--  (SHIFT/LOAD selects)
 |   |   |   |   |
[FF4]->[FF3]->[FF2]->[FF1]->[FF0]--> Serial out
 ^------------- common clock ------------^

Operation:

  1. Set SHIFT/LOAD‾=0SHIFT/\overline{LOAD}=0 and apply one clock pulse. All 5 data bits are loaded into the flip-flops at the same time.
  2. Set SHIFT/LOAD‾=1SHIFT/\overline{LOAD}=1. On each following clock pulse the data move one place towards the output.
  3. After 5 clock pulses all 5 bits have appeared one by one at the serial output.

If you have 4-bit of data to insert into a shift register 1-bit at a time and need to extract those data all at once; which shift register will you use? Design a circuit diagram for your selection and explain its operation with timing diagram.

Similar questions: If you have five bit of data (2014 AD)

Answer

The data enter one bit at a time (serial) and are read out all at once (parallel), so a Serial-In Parallel-Out (SIPO) shift register is used.

Circuit: four D flip-flops FF3,FF2,FF1,FF0FF_3,FF_2,FF_1,FF_0 are connected in cascade: the serial input goes to the D input of the first flip-flop, and QQ of each flip-flop feeds the D input of the next. All flip-flops share one clock. The outputs Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0 of the four flip-flops are the parallel outputs.

Serial in -> [D FF3 Q]->[D FF2 Q]->[D FF1 Q]->[D FF0 Q]
                |           |          |          |
               Q3          Q2         Q1         Q0   (parallel out)
              (common clock to all)

Operation: on each clock pulse, every bit moves one flip-flop to the right and a new bit enters the first flip-flop. After 4 clock pulses the 4 bits are present in the register and are read together at Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0.

Timing diagram for the serial input 1, 0, 1, 1 (the first bit entered ends in the last flip-flop):

ClockSerial inQ3Q2Q1Q0
initial-0000
111000
200100
311010
411101

After the 4th pulse, Q3Q2Q1Q0=1101Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0=1101 is available in parallel.

Answer

Design a Mealy sequence detector for 1110111101 that allows overlapping, with input XX and output ZZ.

States (by the progress made so far): S0S_0 = nothing matched, S1S_1 = "1", S2S_2 = "11", S3S_3 = "111", S4S_4 = "1110".

State table (next state / output ZZ):

S3S_3S4/0S_4/0S3/0S_3/0
S4S_4S0/0S_0/0S1/1S_1/1

After "1110" a 1 completes the sequence, and the final 1 can start a new match, so the next state is S1S_1.

D1=X(Q1+Q0)D_1 = X(Q_1 + Q_0)

D0=X(Q0′+Q1)D_0 = X(Q_0' + Q_1)

Z=Q2XZ = Q_2 X

Check. Sequence 1,1,1,0,1 from S0S_0: S0→S1→S2→S3→S4S_0 \to S_1 \to S_2 \to S_3 \to S_4 (input 0), then input 1 gives Z=1Z = 1 and the state returns to S1S_1.

Why gray codes are used in K-map instead of binary code?

Similar questions: Why Gray Code is used in K-map (2012 AD)

Answer

Gray code changes only one bit between successive values, so adjacent cells in the K-map differ in exactly one variable. This lets terms in neighbouring cells combine by X+X′=1X + X' = 1 and be grouped to eliminate variables. With binary ordering adjacent cells could differ in several bits, and the grouping would not work.

What are error detection codes? Give an example.

Answer

Error detection codes add extra (redundant) bits to data so that the receiver can detect errors introduced during transmission or storage.

Example: the parity bit. In even parity, a bit is added so that the total number of 1s is even. The data 1011001 has four 1s, so the parity bit is 0 and the transmitted word is 10110010. If a single bit flips, the receiver sees an odd number of 1s and detects the error. Other examples are checksum and CRC.

Describe PLA with a simple example of your choice.

Answer

A Programmable Logic Array (PLA) is a combinational device with a programmable AND array followed by a programmable OR array. Inputs and their complements feed the AND array, which forms product terms. The OR array sums chosen product terms to give the outputs. Any set of sum-of-products functions can be implemented by programming the fuse connections.

Example: implement

F1=AB+A′C,F2=AB+BCF_1=AB+A'C,\qquad F_2=AB+BC

Product terms: P1=ABP_1=AB, P2=A′CP_2=A'C, P3=BCP_3=BC.

Product termABCF1F2
P1=ABP_1=AB11-11
P2=A′CP_2=A'C0-11-
P3=BCP_3=BC-11-1

The AND array is programmed with the A, B, C columns (1 means true input, 0 means complemented, - means not connected). The OR array connects P1,P2P_1,P_2 to F1F_1 and P1,P3P_1,P_3 to F2F_2. The shared term P1P_1 is generated once and used for both outputs.

Suggest a circuit to obtain 1 Hz pulse if you are provided with 16 Hz pulse. Draw the necessary timing diagrams.

Answer

A 1 Hz pulse is obtained from 16 Hz by dividing the frequency by 16. A MOD-16 binary (ripple) counter made of log⁡216=4\log_2 16 = 4 flip-flops does this, because each flip-flop (J = K = 1, or T = 1) halves the frequency of its input.

16 Hz --> [FF0] --8 Hz--> [FF1] --4 Hz--> [FF2] --2 Hz--> [FF3] --> 1 Hz

The output of each stage is the clock of the next stage; the output of the last flip-flop (Q3) is the 1 Hz pulse.

Timing diagram (one output cycle spans 16 input clock pulses):

a. If A=61 and B=32, Represent them in Binary and perform B-A. (Use 2's complement)
b. Explain briefly about the process involved in Analog to digital conversion.

Answer

(a) Using 8 bits:

A=61=00111101,B=32=00100000A = 61 = 00111101,\qquad B = 32 = 00100000

2's complement of AA: invert to 1100001011000010 and add 1 to get 1100001111000011.

B−A=B+(−A)B - A = B + (-A):

00100000+  1100001111100011\begin{array}{r} 00100000 \\ +\;11000011 \\ \hline 11100011 \end{array}

There is no carry out of the MSB, so the result is negative and is in 2's complement form. Its magnitude is the 2's complement of 1110001111100011: 00011100+1=00011101=2900011100 + 1 = 00011101 = 29.

So B−A=−29B - A = -29, which matches 32−61=−2932 - 61 = -29.

(b) Analog to digital conversion has these steps:

  1. Sampling: the analog signal is measured at regular intervals. The sampling rate must be at least twice the highest signal frequency (Nyquist criterion).
  2. Holding: a sample-and-hold circuit keeps each sampled value constant while it is converted.
  3. Quantization: each held value is approximated to the nearest of a finite set of 2n2^n levels. The difference is the quantization error.
  4. Encoding: each quantized level is given an nn-bit binary code, producing the digital output.

            S1 S0            select = S2 (on its S0), S1 = 0
  • MUX A selects one of I0I_0 to I3I_3 and MUX B selects one of I4I_4 to I7I_7, both using S1S0S_1S_0.
  • MUX C passes A when S2=0S_2 = 0 and B when S2=1S_2 = 1 (a 2-to-1 selection, so only two of its inputs are used).

Y=S2′ (MUX A output)+S2 (MUX B output)Y = S_2'\,(\text{MUX A output}) + S_2\,(\text{MUX B output})

You are provide with a bit sequence 101, and you are asked to extract those bits after right shifting. Which shift register would you use? How many Clock Pulses would it consume? Discuss with necessary block diagrams and timing diagrams.

Answer

A serial-in serial-out (SISO) right-shift register is used. The bits are loaded one per clock pulse at the serial input, and shift right on every pulse until they leave at the serial output. The sequence has 3 bits, so a 3-bit register (3 D flip-flops) is needed.

Din --> [D FF0 Q0] --> [D FF1 Q1] --> [D FF2 Q2] --> Dout
           ^              ^              ^
CLK -------+--------------+--------------+

Input bits in order: 1, 0, 1.

ClockDinQ0 Q1 Q2Dout (Q2)
0-0 0 00
111 0 00
200 1 00
311 0 11 (first bit)
400 1 00 (second bit)
500 0 11 (third bit)

Timing diagram:

CLK  : _|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_
Din  : 1   0   1   0   0
Q0   : 1   0   1   0   0
Q1   : 0   1   0   1   0
Q2   : 0   0   1   0   1   <- Dout

Clock pulses needed: 3 pulses to load the 3 bits (the first bit then appears at the output), plus 2 more to shift out the remaining bits. The total is 2n−1=52n - 1 = 5 clock pulses.

Simplify the following using k-map
Y=(ABCD′)+(A′B′CD)+(ABC)+(A′B′CD′)+(ACD)+(AB′C′D)Y=(ABCD')+(A'B'CD)+(ABC)+(A'B'CD')+(ACD)+(AB'C'D) and draw circuits using:
a. AND-OR gates b. NAND gates only.
You can use Not Gates wherever necessary.

Answer

Y=ABCD′+A′B′CD+ABC+A′B′CD′+ACD+AB′C′DY = ABCD' + A'B'CD + ABC + A'B'CD' + ACD + AB'C'D

Expand to minterms (order ABCDABCD):

  • ABCD′=1110=14ABCD' = 1110 = 14
  • A′B′CD=0011=3A'B'CD = 0011 = 3
  • ABC=1110,1111=14,15ABC = 1110, 1111 = 14, 15
  • A′B′CD′=0010=2A'B'CD' = 0010 = 2
  • ACD=1011,1111=11,15ACD = 1011, 1111 = 11, 15
  • AB′C′D=1001=9AB'C'D = 1001 = 9

Y=∑m(2,3,9,11,14,15)Y = \sum m(2, 3, 9, 11, 14, 15)

K-map:

AB\CDAB \backslash CD00011110
000011
010000
110011
100110

Groups:

  • m2,m3m_2, m_3 gives A′B′CA'B'C
  • m9,m11m_9, m_{11} gives AB′DAB'D
  • m14,m15m_{14}, m_{15} gives ABCABC

All three are essential (each covers a minterm no other prime implicant covers).

Y=A′B′C+AB′D+ABCY = A'B'C + AB'D + ABC

(a) AND-OR circuit: Three AND gates (3-input) produce A′B′CA'B'C, AB′DAB'D and ABCABC (using NOT gates for A′A' and B′B'). Their outputs feed one 3-input OR gate that gives YY.

(b) NAND-only circuit: Apply double complement and De Morgan:

Y=[(A′B′C)′⋅(AB′D)′⋅(ABC)′]′Y = \left[(A'B'C)'\cdot(AB'D)'\cdot(ABC)'\right]'

Three 3-input NAND gates form the first level and a 3-input NAND gate is the second level. NOT gates for A′A' and B′B' are used as allowed.

Why k-map is suggested only for limited number of variables?

Answer

A K-map has 2n2^n cells for nn variables, so its size doubles with each variable. Beyond 5 or 6 variables the map becomes too large and needs many dimensions, so adjacent cells are hard to see and grouping becomes error-prone. Hence it is practical only for a limited number of variables (up to about 4-6).

A memory contains 1696 distinct cell; which is organized in such a fashion that 32 bit data can be Read/Write once. Find out the input and output of address decoder.

Answer

Each read or write accesses 32 bits at once, so the memory is organised in words of 32 bits.

Number of words=169632=53\text{Number of words} = \frac{1696}{32} = 53

The address decoder selects one of 53 words:

  • Input: nn address lines with 2n≥532^n \ge 53, so n=6n = 6 (since 25=32<53≤642^5 = 32 < 53 \le 64).
  • Output: 53 word-select lines (a 6-to-64 decoder with only 53 outputs used).

Why is PLA better than PAL?

Answer

In a PLA both the AND array and the OR array are programmable, while in a PAL only the AND array is programmable and the OR array is fixed. The PLA is therefore more flexible: product terms can be shared between several outputs and any product term can be connected to any output, so Boolean functions are implemented with fewer product terms and less area.

a. If A=37 and B=-18, then calculate B-A using 2's Complement concept.
b. Write two advantages of Analog and Digital technology each.

Answer

(a) Use 8 bits.

A=37=00100101,B=−18A = 37 = 00100101,\qquad B = -18

18=0001001018 = 00010010, so B=−18=11101110B = -18 = 11101110 (2's complement).

B−A=B+(−A)B - A = B + (-A). The 2's complement of AA: invert 0010010100100101 to 1101101011011010 and add 1 to get 1101101111011011.

11101110+  110110111 11001001\begin{array}{r} 11101110 \\ +\;11011011 \\ \hline 1\,11001001 \end{array}

Discard the carry out: result =11001001= 11001001. The MSB is 1, so the result is negative. Its magnitude is 00110110+1=00110111=5500110110 + 1 = 00110111 = 55.

So B−A=−55B - A = -55, which matches −18−37=−55-18 - 37 = -55.

(b) Advantages:

Analog technology:

  1. It represents real-world quantities continuously, with theoretically infinite resolution.
  2. It needs less bandwidth and often simpler circuitry for simple signals.

Digital technology:

  1. High noise immunity and accuracy, since only two levels need to be distinguished.
  2. Data is easy to store, process, copy and transmit without loss, and errors can be detected and corrected.

Draw a circuit diagram to display A, B, C, D, E and F in seven segment display.

Answer

Hexadecimal digits A to F (decimal 10 to 15) are displayed on a seven-segment display using a 4-bit decoder. The letters are shown as A, b, C, d, E, F.

Input  D C B A (4 bits)
        |
 [4-to-16 decoder or logic gates]
        |
 segment drivers a b c d e f g  --> seven-segment display (common cathode)

   --a--
  f|   |b
   --g--
  e|   |c
   --d--

Segments lit (common-cathode, 1 = ON):

DigitInput DCBADCBAabcdefg
A10101110111
b10110011111
C11001001110
d11010111101
E11101001111
F11111000111

Each segment is the OR of the decoder outputs for the digits where it is lit:

  • a=m10+m12+m14+m15a = m_{10} + m_{12} + m_{14} + m_{15}
  • b=m10+m13b = m_{10} + m_{13}
  • c=m10+m11+m13c = m_{10} + m_{11} + m_{13}
  • d=m11+m12+m13+m14d = m_{11} + m_{12} + m_{13} + m_{14}
  • e=m10+m11+m12+m13+m14+m15e = m_{10} + m_{11} + m_{12} + m_{13} + m_{14} + m_{15}
  • f=m10+m11+m12+m14+m15f = m_{10} + m_{11} + m_{12} + m_{14} + m_{15}
  • g=m10+m11+m13+m14+m15g = m_{10} + m_{11} + m_{13} + m_{14} + m_{15}

In the circuit, the four inputs go to a 4-to-16 decoder (or inverters and AND gates), and the outputs for lines 10 to 15 are combined by the OR gates above to drive segments a to g. (For a common-anode display the segment outputs are inverted.)

BCD represents each decimal digit by its own 4-bit group, so conversion between decimal and BCD is simple (digit by digit) and no arithmetic conversion is needed. This makes it well suited to digital displays, calculators and clocks, which take decimal input and output.

Draw the logic symbol of AND and OR gate used in PAL and PLA.

Answer

In PAL and PLA diagrams the many inputs of a gate are drawn as a single input line, and each crossing of an input line with a vertical signal line is a programmable connection (fuse), marked with an X when connected.

AND gate (product term) OR gate (sum term)
 A  ----x---|                        P1 ----x---|
 A' ----    |                        P2 ----    |
 B  ----x---|-- AND --> P1           P3 ----x---|-- OR --> F
 B' ----    |  (D-shaped)            P4 ----    |  (curved shape)
 C  ----x---|
                                      x = connection kept, no mark = fuse blown
P1 = A·B·C
  • The AND gate is drawn as a D-shaped symbol with one input line (an AND array row) crossing all the input literals. P1=A⋅B⋅CP_1 = A\cdot B\cdot C here.
  • The OR gate is drawn with the curved symbol and one input line crossing all product terms, so the output is the sum of the selected products.
  • In a PLA both arrays are programmable (crosses in both); in a PAL only the AND array is programmable and the OR array connections are fixed.

What is the advantages of Johnson Counter over Ring Counter?

Answer

For the same number of flip-flops nn, a Johnson counter has 2n2n states, while a ring counter has only nn. It therefore needs half as many flip-flops for a given count, and each state can be decoded with a simple 2-input gate.

a. If A=127 and B=15, then calculate (-A) + (-B) using 2's complement concept.
b. Compare Analog and Digital signal.

Answer

(a) The result is −(127+15)=−142-(127 + 15) = -142, which needs 9 bits in 2's complement (8 bits can hold only −128-128 to 127127).

127=001111111⇒−127=110000001127 = 001111111 \Rightarrow -127 = 110000001 15=000001111⇒−15=11111000115 = 000001111 \Rightarrow -15 = 111110001

110000001+  1111100011 101110010\begin{array}{r} 110000001 \\ +\;111110001 \\ \hline 1\,101110010 \end{array}

Discard the carry out: result =101110010= 101110010. The MSB is 1, so it is negative. Magnitude: 010001101+1=010001110=142010001101 + 1 = 010001110 = 142.

So (−A)+(−B)=1011100102=−142(-A) + (-B) = 101110010_2 = -142.

(b) Comparison of analog and digital signals:

AnalogDigital

Takes any value in a rangeTakes only two levels
Easily affected by noise; degrades on copyingHigh noise immunity; accurate
Hard to store and processEasy to store, process and transmit

You are provided with a bit sequence 00010 to operate with Serial In Out register. Describe the store and retrieve mechanism with supportive diagram and also draw the timing diagram.

Answer

A serial-in serial-out (SISO) shift register is used. A 5-bit sequence needs a 5-bit register (5 D flip-flops). Bits enter at Din one per clock pulse and shift right; the first bit entered reaches the output Q4Q_4 after 5 pulses.

Din --> [D FF0 Q0] --> [D FF1 Q1] --> [D FF2 Q2] --> [D FF3 Q3] --> [D FF4 Q4] --> Dout

Draw the circuit diagram to represent the given K-map using: (A K-map on variables R, P, Q with don't-care entries is given in a figure in the original paper.)
a) AND-OR-NOT gate b) Minimum number of NOR gates.

Answer

The K-map figure is not reproduced here, so the method is shown on a representative map of three variables R,P,QR, P, Q with F=Σm(1,3,5,6)+d(7)F = \Sigma m(1,3,5,6) + d(7).

Simplification (groups using the don't-care):

  • Quad m1,m3,m5,m7m_1, m_3, m_5, m_7 gives QQ.
  • Pair m6,m7m_6, m_7 gives RPRP.

F=Q+RPF = Q + RP

(a) AND-OR-NOT implementation

One AND gate forms R⋅PR\cdot P. One OR gate combines it with QQ to give FF. (If a complemented literal appears in a group, a NOT gate supplies it.)

(b) Minimum NOR gates

Write FF as a product of sums: F=Q+RP=(Q+R)(Q+P)F = Q + RP = (Q+R)(Q+P).

F=[(Q+R)′+(Q+P)′]′F = \big[(Q+R)' + (Q+P)'\big]'

  • Gate 1: NOR(Q,R)\text{NOR}(Q,R)
  • Gate 2: NOR(Q,P)\text{NOR}(Q,P)
  • Gate 3: NOR(Gate 1,Gate 2)=F\text{NOR}(\text{Gate 1},\text{Gate 2}) = F

Only 3 NOR gates are needed. In general: group the 0s (and don't-cares) to get F′F', or group the 1s to get a POS form, then replace each OR-AND level by NOR-NOR.

Which logic gates have output same when two inputs are same?

Answer

The XNOR gate gives output 1 when both inputs are the same. The XOR gate gives output 0 when the inputs are the same. For identical inputs, AND, OR, and also NAND and NOR, simply follow the input or its complement (output equals the input for AND/OR, and its complement for NAND/NOR).

a. Show the necessary steps to convert analog signal to digital signal.
b. If A = 62 and B = -510 then calculate B-A using 2's Complement Concept.

Answer

(a) Analog to digital conversion

  1. Sampling: the continuous signal is measured at regular intervals. The sampling rate must be at least twice the highest signal frequency (Nyquist: fs≥2fmaxf_s \ge 2f_{max}). This gives a discrete-time signal.
  2. Quantization: each sample is rounded to the nearest of a finite set of levels (2n2^n levels for nn bits). The rounding creates a small quantization error.
  3. Encoding: each quantized level is assigned a binary code word, giving the digital bit stream.

(b) B−AB - A with A=62A = 62, B=−510B = -510

B−A=−510−62=−572B - A = -510 - 62 = -572. Use 12-bit two's complement.

  • 510=000111111110510 = 000111111110, so B=−510B = -510: invert 111000000001111000000001, add 1, giving 111000000010111000000010.
  • 62=00000011111062 = 000000111110, so −A-A: invert 111111000001111111000001, add 1, giving 111111000010111111000010.

Add:

111000000010+111111000010=1 110111000100111000000010 + 111111000010 = 1\,110111000100

Discard the carry out: 110111000100110111000100. The MSB is 1, so the result is negative. Its magnitude is the two's complement: invert 001000111011001000111011, add 1, giving 001000111100=572001000111100 = 572.

Describe the store and retrieve operation in 4-bit parallel in parallel out register with circuit diagram and timing diagram.

Answer

4-bit PIPO (Parallel In Parallel Out) register

Circuit: four D flip-flops FF3FF_3 to FF0FF_0 share a common clock (and optionally a common clear). The data inputs D3D2D1D0D_3D_2D_1D_0 are connected one-to-one to the D inputs of the flip-flops. The outputs Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0 are available directly as the parallel output lines.

D3 ─►[D FF3]─► Q3
D2 ─►[D FF2]─► Q2
D1 ─►[D FF1]─► Q1
D0 ─►[D FF0]─► Q0
         ▲ common clock

Store (write) operation:

  1. Place the 4-bit word on D3D2D1D0D_3D_2D_1D_0.
  2. Apply a clock pulse. On the active edge, every flip-flop copies its DD input to QQ, so all four bits are stored at the same time (in one clock pulse).
  3. Removing or changing the data inputs afterwards does not change the stored bits until the next clock edge.

Retrieve (read) operation: the stored bits are present continuously at Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0, so the whole word is read at once without any clock pulse. If a tri-state buffer is used, an output-enable signal places the word on the bus.

Timing diagram (example, data = 1011):

TimeClockD3D2D1D0D_3D_2D_1D_0Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0
Before edge01011previous value (e.g. 0000)
Active edge↑10111011
After edge1/0any1011 (held)

Because there is no shifting, a single clock pulse is enough for both loading and reading, which makes PIPO the fastest register type.

  • m0,m2,m8,m10m_0,m_2,m_8,m_{10} gives B′D′B'D'
  • m1,m5m_1,m_5 gives A′C′DA'C'D

F=B′C′+B′D′+A′C′DF = B'C' + B'D' + A'C'D

(a) Only NAND gates (two-level NAND-NAND):

F=[(B′C′)′⋅(B′D′)′⋅(A′C′D)′]′F = \big[(B'C')'\cdot(B'D')'\cdot(A'C'D)'\big]'

Three NAND gates produce the product terms (using B′,C′,D′,A′B', C', D', A' made with NAND inverters). A fourth 3-input NAND combines them and gives FF.

(b) Only NOR gates: group the 0s: m3,m4,m6,m7,m11,m12,m13,m14,m15m_3,m_4,m_6,m_7,m_{11},m_{12},m_{13},m_{14},m_{15}.

F′=BD′+BC+AB+CDF' = BD' + BC + AB + CD

F=(B′+D)(B′+C′)(A′+B′)(C′+D′)F = (B'+D)(B'+C')(A'+B')(C'+D')

Use four NOR gates to produce the sums, and one 4-input NOR to combine them:

  • G1=NOR(B′,D)G_1 = \text{NOR}(B',D), G2=NOR(B′,C′)G_2 = \text{NOR}(B',C'), G3=NOR(A′,B′)G_3 = \text{NOR}(A',B'), G4=NOR(C′,D′)G_4 = \text{NOR}(C',D')
  • F=NOR(G1,G2,G3,G4)F = \text{NOR}(G_1,G_2,G_3,G_4)

since NOR(G1..G4)=G1′G2′G3′G4′=(B′+D)(B′+C′)(A′+B′)(C′+D′)\text{NOR}(G_1..G_4) = G_1'G_2'G_3'G_4' = (B'+D)(B'+C')(A'+B')(C'+D'). Inverters (single-input NORs) supply the complemented literals.

Why the output of last flip-flop is connected to the input of first flip flop in case of Ring Counter?

Answer

In a ring counter, the output of the last flip-flop is fed back to the input of the first so that the single 1 (or 0) circulates continuously around the register. Without the feedback, the 1 would be shifted out after the last stage and the counter would stop; with it, the same bit pattern repeats every nn clock pulses, which makes a self-repeating sequence of nn states.

(a). If A=25 and B=9, then calculate B-A and A-B using 2's Complement concept.
(b) Increase in quantization bit increase the signal quality, explain with example

Answer

(a) Use 8-bit two's complement. A=25=00011001A = 25 = 00011001, B=9=00001001B = 9 = 00001001.

B−AB - A: two's complement of AA is 11100110+1=1110011111100110 + 1 = 11100111.

00001001+11100111=1111000000001001 + 11100111 = 11110000

There is no carry out, so the result is negative. Magnitude: invert 0000111100001111, add 1, giving 00010000=1600010000 = 16.

B−A=−16B - A = -16

A−BA - B: two's complement of BB is 11110110+1=1111011111110110 + 1 = 11110111.

00011001+11110111=1 0001000000011001 + 11110111 = 1\,00010000

A carry out is produced and discarded, so the result is positive: 00010000=1600010000 = 16.

A−B=+16A - B = +16

(b) In analog to digital conversion, an nn-bit quantizer has 2n2^n levels. The step size is Δ=Vrange/2n\Delta = V_{range}/2^n and the maximum quantization error is Δ/2\Delta/2. More bits means smaller steps, less error and a higher signal-to-noise ratio (about 6n6n dB).

Example: signal range 0 to 8 V, sample value 5.3 V.

  • 3 bits: 8 levels, Δ=1\Delta = 1 V. The sample is stored as 5 V (code 101), error 0.3 V.
  • 4 bits: 16 levels, Δ=0.5\Delta = 0.5 V. The sample is stored as 5.5 V (code 1011), error 0.2 V, and the maximum error is 0.25 V instead of 0.5 V.

So increasing the number of quantization bits reproduces the signal more closely and improves the quality.

Design a circuit that display 4, 5 and 8 in seven segment display.

Answer

Inputs: a 4-bit BCD code ABCDABCD for the digit: 4=01004 = 0100, 5=01015 = 0101, 8=10008 = 1000. All other codes are treated as don't care.

Segment requirements (segments aa to gg of a common-cathode display, 1 = on):

DigitABCDABCDabcdefg
401000110011
501011011011
810001111111

K-map simplification (with don't cares):

  • a=A+Da = A + D (on for 5 and 8, off for 4)
  • b=D′b = D' (on for 4 and 8, off for 5)
  • c=1c = 1
  • d=A+Dd = A + D
  • e=Ae = A (on only for 8)
  • f=1f = 1
  • g=1g = 1

Circuit: one OR gate (A+DA+D) drives both segments aa and dd; a NOT gate on DD drives segment bb; AA drives segment ee directly; segments cc, ff and gg are tied to logic 1 (supply). The outputs go to the seven-segment display through current-limiting resistors.

Express the Boolean function F=X+Y′ZF=X+Y'Z in a Standard POS and simplify it using K-map and draw circuit diagram using NAND Gates only.

Answer

F=X+Y′ZF = X + Y'Z

Minterms: X=1X=1 gives 100, 101, 110, 111 (m4m_4 to m7m_7); X=0,Y=0,Z=1X=0, Y=0, Z=1 gives m1m_1. So F=Σm(1,4,5,6,7)F = \Sigma m(1,4,5,6,7).

Standard POS (maxterms for the zeros m0,m2,m3m_0, m_2, m_3):

F=(X+Y+Z)(X+Y′+Z)(X+Y′+Z′)=ΠM(0,2,3)F = (X+Y+Z)(X+Y'+Z)(X+Y'+Z') = \Pi M(0,2,3)

K-map (rows XX, columns YZYZ in Gray order 00,01,11,1000,01,11,10):

X \ YZ00011110
00100
11111

Grouping the 0s: m0,m2m_0, m_2 (cells 000, 010) give (X+Z)(X+Z); m2,m3m_2, m_3 (010, 011) give (X+Y′)(X+Y').

F=(X+Z)(X+Y′)F = (X+Z)(X+Y')

Expanding this gives X+XY′+XZ+Y′Z=X+Y′ZX + XY' + XZ + Y'Z = X + Y'Z, the original function.

NAND-only circuit: F=X+Y′Z=[X′⋅(Y′Z)′]′F = X + Y'Z = \big[X'\cdot(Y'Z)'\big]'

  • NAND 1: inverter on XX gives X′X' (NAND with both inputs tied)
  • NAND 2: inverter on YY gives Y′Y'
  • NAND 3: (Y′Z)′=NAND(Y′,Z)(Y'Z)' = \text{NAND}(Y',Z)
  • NAND 4: F=NAND(X′,NAND 3)F = \text{NAND}(X', \text{NAND 3})

A total of 4 two-input NAND gates is needed.

Design a sequential machine if you are provided with a sequence 010 and at the end of this sequence, the output of the Sequential Machine should be at logic 1.

Answer

Sequence detector for 010010 (overlapping), Moore machine: the output is 1 only in the state reached after the sequence 010. D flip-flops are used.

States:

  • S0S_0: start, no useful bits
  • S1S_1: last bit was 0
  • S2S_2: last two bits were 01
  • S3S_3: 010 detected (output = 1)

Encoding ABAB: S0=00, S1=01, S2=10, S3=11S_0=00,\ S_1=01,\ S_2=10,\ S_3=11.

State table (XX = input):

Present ABABX=0X=0 nextX=1X=1 nextOutput ZZ
S0S_0 0001000
S1S_1 0101100
S2S_2 1011000
S3S_3 1101101

(From S3S_3 the last bit was 0, so it behaves like S1S_1.)

Excitation (D = next state):

  • A+=1A^+ = 1 for (AB=01,X=1AB=01,X=1), (AB=11,X=1AB=11,X=1) and (AB=10,X=0AB=10,X=0)

DA=BX+AB′X′D_A = BX + AB'X'

  • B+=1B^+ = 1 when X=0X=0 in every state

DB=X′D_B = X'

Output:

Z=ABZ = AB

Circuit: two D flip-flops on a common clock; two AND gates and an OR gate for DAD_A; the inverter on XX for DBD_B; and one AND gate on AA and BB for ZZ.

Check with input 0 1 00\,1\,0: S0→S1→S2→S3S_0\to S_1\to S_2\to S_3, so Z=1Z=1 at the end of the sequence.

Decimal numbers are weighted numbers. Justify.

Answer

In a weighted number system, each digit position has a fixed weight and the value is the sum of digit times weight. In decimal the weights are powers of 10, so each digit's value depends on its position.

Example: 472=4×102+7×101+2×100=400+70+2472 = 4\times10^2 + 7\times10^1 + 2\times10^0 = 400+70+2.

Because every position has a fixed weight (10n10^n), decimal is a weighted number system.

It is possible to implement counting function using data flip-flop? Support your answer.

Answer

Yes. A D flip-flop can count. If the complemented output is fed back to the input (D=QˉD=\bar Q), it toggles on every clock pulse and divides the clock by 2, which behaves as a 1-bit counter. Cascading such stages (clocking each from the previous output) gives a ripple counter. A synchronous counter can also be built by setting each DD input to the required next-state function.

How size of data register and address register are calculated in computer system?

Answer

The data register size equals the word length, i.e. the number of bits stored in each memory location. The address register size is found from the number of words NN: it needs n=log⁡2Nn=\log_2 N bits, so that N=2nN = 2^n. For example, 4096 words of 8 bits need a 12-bit address register and an 8-bit data register.

a. If A=1510A=15_{10} and B=−1210B=-12_{10} Compute B-A and A+B by converting them to binary system.
b. Verify any one De Morgan's law for three variables using Truth Table.

Answer

(a) Use 8-bit 2's complement.

A=15=00001111A=15=00001111. B=−12B=-12: 12=0000110012=00001100, 1's complement 1111001111110011, plus 1 gives B=11110100B=11110100.

A + B:

00001111+11110100=1 0000001100001111+11110100=1\,00000011

Discard the carry: 00000011=+300000011=+3. Check: 15−12=315-12=3.

B - A =B+(−A)=B+(-A). −A-A: 00001111→11110000+1=1111000100001111\to11110000+1=11110001.

11110100+11110001=1 1110010111110100+11110001=1\,11100101

Discard the carry: 1110010111100101. This is negative; its 2's complement is 00011011=2700011011=27, so the result is −27-27. Check: −12−15=−27-12-15=-27.

(b) De Morgan's law: A+B+C‾=Aˉ Bˉ Cˉ\overline{A+B+C}=\bar A\,\bar B\,\bar C

A code converter changes data from one binary code to another. As an example, design a BCD to Excess-3 converter. The inputs are the BCD bits ABCDA B C D (A is the MSB) and the outputs are wxyzw x y z, where Excess-3 = BCD + 3.

300110110
401000111
501011000
601101001
701111010
810001011
910011100

Combinations 1010 to 1111 are don't-cares. K-map simplification gives:

z=Dˉz=\bar D y=CD+CˉDˉy=CD+\bar C\bar D x=BˉC+BˉD+BCˉDˉx=\bar B C+\bar B D+B\bar C\bar D w=A+BC+BDw=A+BC+BD

Circuit: the inputs A,B,C,DA,B,C,D and their complements feed a two-level AND-OR network.

  • zz is a single NOT gate on DD.
  • yy is two AND gates (CDCD and CˉDˉ\bar C\bar D) feeding an OR gate, i.e. an XNOR of CC and DD.
  • xx uses three AND gates (BˉC\bar BC, BˉD\bar BD, BCˉDˉB\bar C\bar D) feeding a 3-input OR gate.
  • ww uses two AND gates (BCBC, BDBD) and AA feeding a 3-input OR gate.

Check: BCD 0101 gives w=BD=1w=BD=1, x=0x=0, y=0y=0, z=0z=0, i.e. 1000 (Excess-3 of 5).

  • Up counting: CLK1=Q0CLK_1=Q_0, CLK2=Q1CLK_2=Q_1 (flip-flops trigger on the falling edge).
  • Down counting: CLK1=Qˉ0CLK_1=\bar Q_0, CLK2=Qˉ1CLK_2=\bar Q_1.
  • A control input UP/DOWN‾UP/\overline{DOWN} selects between them:

CLKn=(UP⋅Qn−1)+(UP‾⋅Qˉn−1)CLK_{n}=(\text{UP}\cdot Q_{n-1})+(\overline{\text{UP}}\cdot\bar Q_{n-1})

Each of these is an AND-OR (2-to-1 multiplexer) network placed before the clock input of FF1FF_1 and FF2FF_2.

Count sequence: up: 000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110, 111, 000. Down: 000, 111, 110, 101, 100, 011, 010, 001, 000.

Timing diagram (up mode):

CLK  _|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_|‾|_
Q0   _|‾‾|__|‾‾|__|‾‾|__|‾‾|__|‾‾|__
Q1   ___|‾‾‾‾‾|_____|‾‾‾‾‾|_____
Q2   _________|‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾|__________

Q0Q_0 toggles on every clock pulse, Q1Q_1 at half that rate and Q2Q_2 at one quarter, so the output frequency is f/8f/8. In down mode the waveforms run in the reverse count order, because each stage is driven by the complement of the previous output.

Discuss flip flop operating characteristics.

Answer

Operating characteristics specify the performance and limits of a flip-flop.

  1. Propagation delay: the time between the triggering clock edge and the change at the output (tPLHt_{PLH}, tPHLt_{PHL}).
  2. Setup time (tst_s): the time the input data must be stable before the active clock edge.
  3. Hold time (tht_h): the time the input must stay stable after the active clock edge.
  4. Maximum clock frequency (fmaxf_{max}): the highest clock rate at which the flip-flop triggers reliably.
  5. Minimum pulse width (twt_w): the shortest allowed clock (HIGH or LOW) and asynchronous set/clear pulse width.
  6. Asynchronous input active time: the minimum duration of the preset and clear pulses.
  7. Clock transition time: the maximum rise and fall time of the clock edge.
  8. Power dissipation: the power consumed by the device, P=VCC×ICCP=V_{CC}\times I_{CC}, usually in mW.

Violating setup or hold time can make the output unpredictable (metastability).

If f(A,B,C,D)=∑(3,4,7,8,14)f(A,B,C,D)=\sum(3,4,7,8,14) and d(A,B,C,D)=∑(1,6,9,13)d(A,B,C,D)=\sum(1,6,9,13) design a truth table for this expression and design a circuit using
a) Using Basic gates b) Using minimum number of NAND gates.

Answer

Truth table (X = don't care):

mA B C Df
000000
10001X
200100
300111
401001
501010
60110X
701111
810001
91001X
1010100
1110110
1211000
131101X
1411101
1511110

K-map grouping (using don't cares where they help):

  • m3,m7m_3,m_7 give AˉCD\bar A CD.
  • m4,m6m_4,m_6 give AˉBDˉ\bar A B\bar D.
  • m8,m9m_8,m_9 give ABˉCˉA\bar B\bar C.
  • m6,m14m_6,m_{14} give BCDˉBC\bar D.

No larger groups are possible (for example, the neighbours m5m_5, m12m_{12}, m15m_{15} are 0). Hence

f=AˉCD+AˉBDˉ+ABˉCˉ+BCDˉf=\bar A CD+\bar A B\bar D+A\bar B\bar C+BC\bar D

(a) Basic gates: four inverters to get Aˉ,Bˉ,Cˉ,Dˉ\bar A,\bar B,\bar C,\bar D; four 3-input AND gates producing the four product terms; one 4-input OR gate combining them.

(b) Minimum NAND gates: replace each AND by a 3-input NAND, and the final OR by a 4-input NAND (the product terms are already complemented). The inverters are single-input NAND gates. This uses 4 three-input NAND gates, 1 four-input NAND gate, and the NAND inverters for the complemented literals:

f=AˉCD‾⋅AˉBDˉ‾⋅ABˉCˉ‾⋅BCDˉ‾‾f=\overline{\overline{\bar A CD}\cdot\overline{\bar A B\bar D}\cdot\overline{A\bar B\bar C}\cdot\overline{BC\bar D}}

Analyze the following sequential circuit. (A circuit with two D flip-flops Q0 and Q1, an input M, AND, OR, NAND and XOR gates is given in a figure in the original paper.)

Answer

The figure is not reproduced here, so the analysis is given as the standard procedure applied to a circuit of two D flip-flops Q0Q_0 and Q1Q_1 with an input MM.

Step 1: Input equations. Read the D inputs from the gates in the figure, as functions of the present state and MM:

D0=f0(Q0,Q1,M),D1=f1(Q0,Q1,M)D_0=f_0(Q_0,Q_1,M),\qquad D_1=f_1(Q_0,Q_1,M)

Step 2: State equations. For a D flip-flop the next state equals its input, so Q0(t+1)=D0Q_0(t+1)=D_0 and Q1(t+1)=D1Q_1(t+1)=D_1.

Step 3: State table. List all combinations of Q1Q0Q_1Q_0 (00, 01, 10, 11) and MM (0, 1), evaluate D0D_0 and D1D_1 for each, and record the next state Q1(t+1)Q0(t+1)Q_1(t+1)Q_0(t+1) (and any output).

Step 4: State diagram. Draw one circle per state (00,01,10,1100,01,10,11) and an arrow for each row of the state table, labelled with MM (and the output).

Step 5: Interpretation. From the diagram identify the behaviour: if, for one value of MM, the states cycle 00→01→10→11→0000\to01\to10\to11\to00 the circuit is a 2-bit counter; for the other value it holds, counts down or reverses, which makes it a controlled (up/down) counter. The next state depends on the present state and on MM, so the circuit is a clocked synchronous sequential circuit, and its behaviour is completely described by the state table and state diagram.

Is gray weighted or un-weighted code? Support your answer.

Answer

Gray code is an un-weighted code. No fixed weight (such as 8, 4, 2, 1) is assigned to the bit positions, so the decimal value cannot be found by summing weights times bits. For example, the 3-bit Gray code of 3 is 010 and that of 4 is 110, and the same bit position does not carry a fixed value. Its property is that only one bit changes between consecutive numbers.

Why data bus need to be PIPO?

Answer

The data bus has to carry a whole word (for example 8, 16 or 32 bits) between the registers, memory and CPU at the same time. A Parallel-In Parallel-Out (PIPO) register loads and outputs all bits simultaneously in one clock pulse, so a word is transferred in a single clock cycle. A serial register would need one clock pulse per bit, which would be far too slow.

List the advantages of PLDs over fixed function ICs.

Answer

  • The user can configure them to implement any logic function, so one device type serves many designs.
  • Fewer chips are needed, so the board is smaller and the cost lower.
  • Lower power consumption and higher reliability, because there are fewer interconnections.
  • Design changes can be made quickly, often without rewiring.
  • Short design time and easy prototyping.
  • Lower inventory, because one standard part replaces many fixed-function ICs.
  • Design security, since a programmed device is hard to copy.

NAND-only implementation (9 gates):

  1. X=A⋅B‾X=\overline{A\cdot B}
  2. P=A⋅X‾P=\overline{A\cdot X}
  3. Q=B⋅X‾Q=\overline{B\cdot X}
  4. H=P⋅Q‾=A⊕BH=\overline{P\cdot Q}=A\oplus B
  5. R=H⋅Bin‾R=\overline{H\cdot B_{in}}
  6. S=H⋅R‾S=\overline{H\cdot R}
  7. T=Bin⋅R‾T=\overline{B_{in}\cdot R}
  8. D=S⋅T‾=H⊕BinD=\overline{S\cdot T}=H\oplus B_{in}
  9. Bout=Q⋅T‾B_{out}=\overline{Q\cdot T}

Why the borrow is correct: B⋅X=B(Aˉ+Bˉ)=AˉBB\cdot X=B(\bar A+\bar B)=\bar A B, so Q=AˉB‾Q=\overline{\bar AB}. Also Bin⋅R=Bin(Hˉ+Bˉin)=HˉBinB_{in}\cdot R=B_{in}(\bar H+\bar B_{in})=\bar H B_{in}, so T=HˉBin‾T=\overline{\bar H B_{in}}. Then Bout=Q⋅T‾=AˉB+HˉBinB_{out}=\overline{Q\cdot T}=\bar AB+\bar H B_{in}, as required.

What is the size of memory if address register is of 12-bits and data register is of 256-bits? Explain memory read / write operation with necessary diagram.

Answer

Size: a 12-bit address register can address 212=40962^{12}=4096 words, and each word is 256 bits (the data register width).

Size=4096×256=1,048,576 bits=1 Mbit=128 KB\text{Size}=4096\times256=1{,}048{,}576\ \text{bits}=1\ \text{Mbit}=128\ \text{KB}

Block diagram: the CPU is connected to the memory through an address register (12 bits) and an address decoder that selects one of the 4096 locations, a data register (256 bits) joined to the memory array through a bidirectional data path, and control lines READ/WRITE (and chip select).

Read operation:

  1. The CPU puts the address of the required word in the address register.
  2. The READ control signal is activated.
  3. The decoder selects the location, and its 256 bits are copied into the data register.
  4. The CPU takes the data from the data register. The memory content is unchanged.

Write operation:

  1. The address is placed in the address register.
  2. The data to be stored is placed in the data register.
  3. The WRITE signal is activated.
  4. The selected location is overwritten with the data in the data register.

(a) Define analog quantities. What are the uses of it?
(b) Minimize the following Boolean expression using Boolean rule: AB+AB‾C+A‾B+BCD‾+B‾CD‾‾\overline{AB+A\overline{B}C+\overline{A}B+BC\overline{D}+\overline{B}C\overline{D}}

Answer

(a) Analog quantities are physical quantities that vary continuously over a range and can take any value in it, for example temperature, pressure, speed, light intensity and sound.

Uses: they represent real-world signals, and are measured by sensors and converted by an ADC for digital processing. They are used in audio and radio systems, measuring instruments, and control systems, and can be reproduced by a DAC.

(b) Let

X=AB+ABˉC+AˉB+BCDˉ+BˉCDˉ‾X=\overline{AB+A\bar BC+\bar AB+BC\bar D+\bar BC\bar D}

Inside the bar: AB+AˉB=BAB+\bar AB=B, and BCDˉBC\bar D is absorbed by BB. Then

B+ABˉC+BˉCDˉ=B+AC+CDˉB+A\bar BC+\bar BC\bar D=B+AC+C\bar D

using B+BˉY=B+YB+\bar B Y=B+Y. Taking the complement:

X=Bˉ AC‾ CDˉ‾=Bˉ(Aˉ+Cˉ)(Cˉ+D)=Bˉ(Cˉ+AˉD)X=\bar B\,\overline{AC}\,\overline{C\bar D}=\bar B(\bar A+\bar C)(\bar C+D)=\bar B(\bar C+\bar AD)

It is possible to design a combinational circuit that adds two 3-bit numbers using only half adder? Support your answer.

Answer

Yes, it is possible. The least significant bit needs one half adder. For the other two bits, a full adder can be made from two half adders and an OR gate, and the OR is not needed in the carry: its two inputs (carries from the two half adders) can never both be 1, so c1∨c2=c1⊕c2c_1\vee c_2=c_1\oplus c_2, which is the sum output of a third half adder. Thus a 3-bit adder can be built from 7 half adders alone.

What is the advantage of flip flop over latch?

Answer

A flip-flop is edge triggered: its output changes only at a clock edge, so it samples its inputs at one instant. A latch is level sensitive and transparent while enabled, so input glitches and race-through can pass to the output. Flip-flops therefore give more reliable synchronous operation and are better for counters and registers.

Why BCD counters is define as truncated counter?

Answer

A 4-bit counter would naturally count 24=162^4=16 states (0 to 15). A BCD (decade) counter skips the states 1010 to 1111 and returns to 0000 after 1001, i.e. its natural sequence is cut short at 10 states. Hence it is called a truncated counter (modulus 10 instead of 16).

A DRAM cell stores data as charge on a capacitor, and this charge leaks away within a few milliseconds. The refresh circuit periodically reads each row and writes the data back, restoring the charge. Without it the stored data would be lost.

Which logic family of IC will be suitable for circuit requiring wide range of dc supply voltage and why?

Answer

CMOS is the suitable logic family. A CMOS gate uses complementary MOSFETs, so it works over a wide supply range (for example 3 V to 15 V for the 4000 series) and gives a noise margin of about 45% of the supply. TTL needs a tightly regulated 5 V supply (4.75 V to 5.25 V).

(a) If F1=AB+A′BF1=AB+A'B and F2=A′B+A′B′F2=A'B+A'B'; then design PLA that produce F1 and F2.
(b) If A=−14A=-14 and B=9B=9, then calculate A-B using signed 2's Complement data.

Answer

(a) Simplify first:

F1=AB+A′B=B(A+A′)=BF_1 = AB + A'B = B(A + A') = B

F2=A′B+A′B′=A′(B+B′)=A′F_2 = A'B + A'B' = A'(B + B') = A'

A PLA needs two product terms, P1=BP_1 = B and P2=A′P_2 = A'.

Product termABF1F2
P1=BP_1 = B-110
P2=A′P_2 = A'0-01
  • AND plane: the inputs A,A′,B,B′A, A', B, B' run as vertical lines. Fuses are kept at BB for P1P_1 and at A′A' for P2P_2.
  • OR plane: P1P_1 connects to the F1F_1 output line and P2P_2 connects to the F2F_2 output line.

(b) A=−14A = -14, B=9B = 9, so A−B=−23A - B = -23. This needs 6 bits (range −32-32 to +31+31).

  • +14=001110+14 = 001110, so A=−14=110010A = -14 = 110010 (2's complement).
  • B=+9=001001B = +9 = 001001, so −B=110111-B = 110111.

Adding A+(−B)A + (-B):

110010+110111=1 101001110010 + 110111 = 1\,101001

Discard the carry out. The result is 101001101001. This is negative because the sign bit is 1. Its magnitude is the 2's complement 010111=23010111 = 23, so A−B=−23A - B = -23, which is correct.

Design and explain the flip flop which complements its present state when the clock is triggered with both input HIGH.

Answer

The flip-flop that toggles (complements) its state when both inputs are HIGH is the JK flip-flop. For J=K=1J = K = 1, Q(t+1)=Q′(t)Q(t+1) = Q'(t) on each clock edge.

Design. A clocked SR flip-flop is built from four NAND gates, and the outputs are fed back to the input gates:

  • SS gate: NAND of JJ, Q′Q' and CLK.
  • RR gate: NAND of KK, QQ and CLK.
  • The outputs of these two gates drive the cross-coupled NAND latch that gives QQ and Q′Q'.

The feedback removes the invalid S=R=1S = R = 1 state of the SR flip-flop.

Characteristic table

JKQ(t+1)Operation
00Q(t)No change
010Reset
101Set
11Q'(t)Toggle

Characteristic equation:

Q(t+1)=JQ′+K′QQ(t+1) = JQ' + K'Q

Explanation. When J=K=1J = K = 1 and the clock is active, the gate connected to the currently HIGH output of QQ or Q′Q' opens. This resets the flip-flop if Q=1Q = 1 and sets it if Q=0Q = 0, so the state flips. In a level-triggered JK this would flip repeatedly while the clock is high (race-around). So an edge-triggered or master-slave JK is used to get exactly one toggle per clock.

Design 12x1 multiplexer using minimum number of NAND gates.

Answer

A 12x1 multiplexer has 12 data inputs D0…D11D_0 \ldots D_{11}, so it needs ⌈log⁡212⌉=4\lceil \log_2 12 \rceil = 4 select lines S3S2S1S0S_3 S_2 S_1 S_0, and the output is

Y=∑i=011Di mi(S3,S2,S1,S0)Y = \sum_{i=0}^{11} D_i \, m_i(S_3,S_2,S_1,S_0)

where mim_i is the product of the select lines (true or complemented) for the binary value of ii. The codes 12 to 15 are unused.

NAND-NAND implementation

  1. Four NAND gates connected as inverters give S3′,S2′,S1′,S0′S_3', S_2', S_1', S_0'.
  2. Twelve 5-input NAND gates form the first level. Gate ii takes DiD_i and the four select literals of mim_i. For example, gate 0 takes D0S3′S2′S1′S0′D_0 S_3' S_2' S_1' S_0', gate 5 takes D5S3′S2S1′S0D_5 S_3' S_2 S_1' S_0, and gate 11 takes D11S3S2′S1S0D_{11} S_3 S_2' S_1 S_0.
  3. One 12-input NAND gate takes the outputs of all twelve first-level gates and gives YY.

By De Morgan's theorem, the NAND of the NANDed products is the OR of the products, so YY is the required sum of products.

Gate count: 12 five-input NANDs, one 12-input NAND and 4 NAND inverters. A 12-input NAND can be made from smaller NANDs if only a limited fan-in is available.

Design a 3 bit synchronous counter using T flip flop that counts only even sequences.

Answer

The counter must follow the sequence 0→2→4→6→00 \to 2 \to 4 \to 6 \to 0, that is Q2Q1Q0=000,010,100,110,000Q_2Q_1Q_0 = 000, 010, 100, 110, 000. The bits are Q2Q_2 (MSB), Q1Q_1, Q0Q_0.

Excitation table of the T flip-flop: T=Q⊕Q+T = Q \oplus Q^+.

Present Q2Q1Q0Q_2Q_1Q_0Next Q2Q1Q0Q_2Q_1Q_0T2T_2T1T_1T0T_0
000010010
010100110
100110010
110000110

The odd states (001, 011, 101, 111) are unused. Treat them as don't cares and choose T0=Q0T_0 = Q_0 so that any odd state clears Q0Q_0 after one clock and falls into the even cycle.

From the table:

T0=Q0  (no toggle needed in the used states),T1=1,T2=Q1T_0 = Q_0 \; (\text{no toggle needed in the used states}), \quad T_1 = 1, \quad T_2 = Q_1

Circuit. Three T flip-flops share a common clock.

  • T1T_1 is tied to logic 1, so FF1 toggles on every clock.
  • T2T_2 is connected to Q1Q_1, so FF2 toggles only when Q1=1Q_1 = 1.
  • T0T_0 is connected to Q0Q_0. In the even states Q0Q_0 is 0, so FF0 stays at 0.

Check: 000→010000 \to 010 (Q1Q_1 toggles); 010→100010 \to 100 (Q1Q_1 and Q2Q_2 toggle); 100→110100 \to 110; 110→000110 \to 000. This confirms the counter counts only the even numbers.

You have five bit data: 11001 which is to be loaded in a register simultaneously, and you are asked to shift those bits one bit at a time. Which shift register will you use? Explain with necessary diagrams.

Answer

Use a Parallel-In Serial-Out (PISO) shift register with 5 flip-flops. All 5 bits are loaded at the same time, then shifted out one bit per clock pulse.

Diagram. Five D flip-flops FF4…FF0FF_4 \ldots FF_0 share one clock. In front of each D input is a 2-to-1 multiplexer (or AND-OR gating) controlled by a SHIFT/LOAD‾\overline{\text{LOAD}} line:

  • LOAD (= 0): the multiplexer passes the parallel input PiP_i to DiD_i.
  • SHIFT (= 1): the multiplexer passes the output of the previous flip-flop, so Di=Qi+1D_i = Q_{i+1}, and the serial input of the leftmost flip-flop is 0.
  • The serial output is taken from Q0Q_0 (the rightmost flip-flop).

Operation with data 11001 (Q4Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_4Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0, shifting right):

ClockModeQ4Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_4Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0Serial out

2Shift011000
3Shift001100
4Shift000111
5Shift000011

The serial output appears LSB first as 1, 0, 0, 1, 1, so 5 shift pulses are needed to read all bits.

If f(P,Q,R,S)=Π(0,1,4,5,11,14,15)f(P,Q,R,S)=\Pi(0,1,4,5,11,14,15) and d(P,Q,R,S)=Π(2,3,7,8,9,13)d(P,Q,R,S)=\Pi(2,3,7,8,9,13), then design circuit using minimum number of NOR gates and basic gates.

Answer

The function is given in maxterm form, with PP as the MSB (PQRSPQRS).

  • f=0f = 0 at 0, 1, 4, 5, 11, 14, 15.
  • Don't cares at 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 13.
  • f=1f = 1 at the remaining cells: 6, 10, 12.

K-map (product of sums). Group the 0s together with the don't cares.

GroupCellsSum term
Quad of 0s: 0, 1, 4, 5 (P=0,R=0P=0, R=0)0, 1, 4, 5(P+R)(P + R)
Quad: 3, 7, 11, 15 using the X cells (R=1,S=1R=1, S=1)11, 15(R′+S′)(R' + S')
Pair: 14, 15 (P=Q=R=1P=Q=R=1)14(P′+Q′+R′)(P' + Q' + R')

f=(P+R)(R′+S′)(P′+Q′+R′)f = (P + R)(R' + S')(P' + Q' + R')

Check: at minterms 6, 10 and 12 every factor is 1, so f=1f = 1. At 0, 1, 4, 5, 11, 14 and 15 at least one factor is 0, so f=0f = 0.

NOR implementation. Using XYZ=X‾+Y‾+Z‾‾XYZ = \overline{\overline{X}+\overline{Y}+\overline{Z}}:

f=NOR[NOR(P,R),  NOR(R′,S′),  NOR(P′,Q′,R′)]f = \text{NOR}\Big[\text{NOR}(P,R),\; \text{NOR}(R',S'),\; \text{NOR}(P',Q',R')\Big]

  • 3 first-level NOR gates (two 2-input and one 3-input).
  • 1 three-input NOR gate at the output.
  • 4 inverters (NOT gates) for P′,Q′,R′,S′P', Q', R', S'.

Total: 4 NOR gates and 4 basic NOT gates.

Answer

The maximum is 2n2n half adders. An nn-bit parallel adder needs nn full adders, and each full adder is made from 2 half adders and an OR gate. (If the LSB stage has no carry-in, it can use a single half adder, so the true count in that case is 2n−12n-1.)

What is the use of cascaded counters?

Answer

Cascaded counters are used to get a larger modulus than a single counter provides. Connecting counters of moduli M1M_1 and M2M_2 in cascade gives an overall modulus M1×M2M_1 \times M_2. They are also used for frequency division (for example, a 60 Hz or 1 Hz clock for digital clocks) and for building multi-digit decade counters.

Which shift register counter constructed using "n" flip-flop can "2n" states and why?

Answer

The Johnson (twisted-ring) counter. The complement of the last flip-flop output (Qn′Q_n') is fed back to the first input. The register first fills with 1s and then with 0s, one bit per clock, so it passes through 2n2n distinct states, twice as many as a ring counter with nn flip-flops.

(a) State and prove distributive law using truth table method.
(b) If A=(1011)2A=(1011)_2, then perform A-B using signed 2's Complement method.

Answer

(a) Distributive laws:

  • A(B+C)=AB+ACA(B + C) = AB + AC
  • A+BC=(A+B)(A+C)A + BC = (A + B)(A + C)

Proof of the first law by truth table:

ABCB+CA(B+C)ABACAB+AC

01110000
10000000
10111011
11011101
11111111

The columns A(B+C)A(B+C) and AB+ACAB+AC are identical in all 8 rows, so the law is proved.

(b) The value of BB is not given in the question, so take B=(0110)2=6B = (0110)_2 = 6 for the working. Use 5 bits including a sign bit.

  • A=+11=01011A = +11 = 01011
  • B=+6=00110B = +6 = 00110, so −B-B (2's complement) =11010= 11010

A−B=01011+11010=1 00101A - B = 01011 + 11010 = 1\,00101

Design and explain the operational characteristics of flip-flop that is single input version of JK flip flop.

Answer

The single-input version of the JK flip-flop is the T (toggle) flip-flop. It is obtained by connecting J and K together, so T=J=KT = J = K.

Design. Join the J and K inputs of a JK flip-flop to one line T. (A D flip-flop is the other single-input version, made with an inverter between J and K.)

Characteristic table

TQ(t)Q(t+1)Operation
000No change
011No change
101Toggle
110Toggle

Characteristic equation:

Q(t+1)=T⊕Q=TQ′+T′QQ(t+1) = T \oplus Q = TQ' + T'Q

Operation.

  • T=0T = 0: J = K = 0, so the output holds its state.
  • T=1T = 1: J = K = 1, so the output toggles on each clock pulse.

With T=1T = 1 permanently, the output frequency is half the clock frequency, which makes the T flip-flop the basic element of counters and frequency dividers.

Design 3-bit asynchronous UP/DOWN counter.

Answer

Use three negative-edge-triggered JK (or T) flip-flops with J=K=1J = K = 1, so each toggles on the falling edge of its clock input. A mode control MM selects the direction: M=1M = 1 for UP and M=0M = 0 for DOWN.

Clocking of the stages

  • FF0 is clocked by the external clock.
  • CLK1=M⋅Q0+M′⋅Q0′CLK_1 = M \cdot Q_0 + M' \cdot Q_0'
  • CLK2=M⋅Q1+M′⋅Q1′CLK_2 = M \cdot Q_1 + M' \cdot Q_1'

In the UP mode (M=1M = 1) each flip-flop is clocked from the QQ output of the previous stage. In the DOWN mode (M=0M = 0) it is clocked from the Q′Q' output. Each clock input is made with two AND gates and an OR gate (a 2-to-1 multiplexer).

Design and explain a shift register where 4 bit data be simultaneously loaded in a single clock pulse and data can be shifted one bit at time from it.

Answer

A Parallel-In Serial-Out (PISO) shift register loads all 4 bits in a single clock pulse and then shifts them out one bit at a time.

Design. Four D flip-flops FF3…FF0FF_3 \ldots FF_0 share a common clock. Each D input has a 2-to-1 multiplexer controlled by SHIFT/LOAD‾\overline{\text{LOAD}}:

  • LOAD = 0: Di=PiD_i = P_i (parallel data loaded on the next clock edge).
  • SHIFT = 1: Di=Qi+1D_i = Q_{i+1}, with D3D_3 taking the serial input (0).

The serial output is taken from Q0Q_0.

Operation for data P3P2P1P0=1011P_3P_2P_1P_0 = 1011:

ClockModeQ3Q2Q1Q0Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0Serial out (Q0Q_0)

2Shift01011
3Shift00100
4Shift00011

All 4 bits are loaded in one clock pulse, and then 3 further pulses shift the rest out (4 bits in total are read serially). This conversion from parallel to serial is used in serial data transmission.

Design circuit of sequence recognizer that detects the bit sequence 11111

Answer

Design a Mealy detector for the sequence 1111111111 with overlapping allowed (input XX, output ZZ).

States: S0S_0 = no 1s yet, S1S_1 = one 1, S2S_2 = two 1s, S3S_3 = three 1s, S4S_4 = four or more consecutive 1s.

S3S_3S0/0S_0/0S4/0S_4/0
S4S_4S0/0S_0/0S4/1S_4/1

State assignment (Q2Q1Q0Q_2Q_1Q_0): S0=000S_0=000, S1=001S_1=001, S2=010S_2=010, S3=011S_3=011, S4=100S_4=100. The states 101, 110 and 111 are don't cares. Use D flip-flops (D=Q+D = Q^+).

Next-state equations (from K-maps with the don't cares):

D2=X(Q2+Q1Q0)D_2 = X(Q_2 + Q_1Q_0)

D1=X(Q1⊕Q0)D_1 = X(Q_1 \oplus Q_0)

D0=X Q2′ Q0′D_0 = X\,Q_2'\,Q_0'

Z=Q2XZ = Q_2 X

Check. The input 1,1,1,1,1 moves the machine 000→001→010→011→100000 \to 001 \to 010 \to 011 \to 100, and the fifth 1 (in S4S_4) gives Z=1Z = 1. Any 0 returns the circuit to S0S_0.

Circuit. Three D flip-flops on a common clock, the gates above for D2,D1,D0D_2, D_1, D_0, and an AND gate (Q2⋅XQ_2 \cdot X) for the output.

What do you mean by truncated counter?

Answer

A truncated counter is a counter whose modulus is less than 2n2^n for nn flip-flops. It skips some of the natural binary states by resetting (or presetting) after a chosen count. For example, a decade (mod-10) counter uses 4 flip-flops but counts only 0 to 9 and then returns to 0.

What are the purposes of adder and subtractors?

Answer

Adders and subtractors perform binary addition and subtraction. They are the arithmetic building blocks of the ALU, and are used in computing addresses, in incrementers and decrementers, and in multiplication and division circuits. A subtractor, or an adder with 2's complement, allows subtraction with the same hardware.

Why do we need don't cares in K-map?

Answer

Don't-care conditions are input combinations that never occur or whose output is unimportant. In a K-map each X can be taken as 1 or 0, whichever gives larger groups. This gives fewer literals and terms, so the expression is simpler and the circuit cheaper.

"Flip-flop is 1 bit memory". Justify

Answer

A flip-flop has two stable states, 0 and 1, and it stays in the state it was set to as long as power is on and no clock-triggered input changes it. Its output QQ therefore stores one binary digit, so it is a 1-bit memory cell. nn flip-flops can store nn bits, as in registers.

List the advantage of PLDS over Fixed function devices.

Answer

Advantages of PLDs over fixed-function devices:

  • One device replaces many SSI/MSI ICs, so the chip count, board area and power consumption are lower.
  • The user programs the logic, so the design is flexible and can be changed or corrected easily (reprogrammable types).
  • Design time and time to market are shorter, since prototyping is quick.
  • Lower overall cost and higher reliability, with fewer interconnections.
  • Better design security, as a programmed device is hard to copy.

You need to store binary information 0101 by shifting right and extract those bits by shifting left, which shift register will you suggest? Design your suggested shift register with Operational table and timing diagram.

Answer

A bidirectional (shift-left/shift-right) serial-in serial-out shift register is needed. Use four D flip-flops Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0 with a 2-to-1 multiplexer at each D input controlled by a RIGHT/LEFT line:

  • RIGHT = 1: D3=D_3 = serial input, D2=Q3D_2 = Q_3, D1=Q2D_1 = Q_2, D0=Q1D_0 = Q_1.
  • LEFT = 0: D0=D_0 = serial input, D1=Q0D_1 = Q_0, D2=Q1D_2 = Q_1, D3=Q2D_3 = Q_2. The serial output is taken from Q3Q_3.

Operation table. To store 0101, feed the bits LSB first (1, 0, 1, 0) while shifting right. Then shift left with 0 as serial input and read the bits from Q3Q_3.

Design decade asynchronous counter with operational table and timing diagram.

Answer

A decade (mod-10) asynchronous counter counts 0 to 9 and then resets to 0. It is a truncated 4-bit ripple counter.

Design. Use four negative-edge-triggered JK flip-flops with J=K=1J = K = 1 (toggle). The external clock drives FF0, and CLK1=Q0CLK_1 = Q_0, CLK2=Q1CLK_2 = Q_1, CLK3=Q2CLK_3 = Q_2. The count 10 is Q3Q2Q1Q0=1010Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0 = 1010, so a 2-input NAND gate with inputs Q3Q_3 and Q1Q_1 drives the active-low asynchronous CLEAR of all flip-flops. At count 10 the NAND output goes low and immediately clears the counter to 0000.

Design and explain the operational characteristics of flip-flop which solved the problem of clocked JK flip-flop.

Answer

The master-slave JK flip-flop solves the problem (race-around) of the clocked JK flip-flop.

Problem. In a level-triggered JK flip-flop with J=K=1J = K = 1, the output toggles repeatedly during the time the clock is high if that time is longer than the propagation delay. The output at the end of the pulse is then uncertain.

Design. Two clocked SR/JK latches are connected in series:

  • The master takes the external J and K inputs and is enabled when CLK = 1.
  • The slave takes the master's outputs and is enabled through an inverter when CLK = 0.
  • The slave outputs QQ and Q′Q' are fed back to the master's input gates (Q to the K gate and Q' to the J gate).

Operation

  1. CLK = 1: the master is enabled and follows J and K, and the slave is disabled, so the output QQ does not change.
  2. CLK goes to 0: the master is disabled (it holds its value), the slave is enabled and copies the master's state to QQ.

The output therefore changes only once per clock cycle, on the falling edge, so there is no race-around even for J=K=1J = K = 1.

Characteristic table

Simplify the Boolean expression F(A,B,C,D)=Σ(1,2,4,6,7,11,12,13)F(A,B,C,D)=\Sigma(1,2,4,6,7,11,12,13) and don't care conditions d(A,B,C,D)=(0,15)d(A,B,C,D)=(0,15) in POS and realized it with minimum no of NAND gate.

Answer

Given: F(A,B,C,D)=Σ(1,2,4,6,7,11,12,13)F(A,B,C,D)=\Sigma(1,2,4,6,7,11,12,13) with d(0,15)d(0,15).

For POS we group the 0s of the K-map. The 0s are the minterms not in the list: 3,5,8,9,10,143,5,8,9,10,14. The don't cares 00 and 1515 may be used in groups if that helps.

AB \ CD00011110
00X101
011011
1111X0
100010

Groups of 0s:

  • 8,98,9 gives AB′C′AB'C', so the sum term is (A′+B+C)(A'+B+C).
  • 10,1410,14 gives ACD′ACD', so the sum term is (A′+C′+D)(A'+C'+D).
  • 33 is isolated, giving (A+B+C′+D′)(A+B+C'+D').
  • 55 is isolated, giving (A+B′+C+D′)(A+B'+C+D').

F=(A′+B+C)(A′+C′+D)(A+B+C′+D′)(A+B′+C+D′)F=(A'+B+C)(A'+C'+D)(A+B+C'+D')(A+B'+C+D')

NAND realization. Each sum term equals a NAND of the complemented literals:

  • (A′+B+C)=A⋅B′⋅C′‾(A'+B+C)=\overline{A\cdot B'\cdot C'}
  • (A′+C′+D)=A⋅C⋅D′‾(A'+C'+D)=\overline{A\cdot C\cdot D'}
  • (A+B+C′+D′)=A′⋅B′⋅C⋅D‾(A+B+C'+D')=\overline{A'\cdot B'\cdot C\cdot D}
  • (A+B′+C+D′)=A′⋅B⋅C′⋅D‾(A+B'+C+D')=\overline{A'\cdot B\cdot C'\cdot D}

So four first-level NAND gates (3-, 3-, 4- and 4-input) produce the sum terms. Their AND is formed by a 4-input NAND followed by a NAND used as an inverter. The input complements A′,B′,C′,D′A',B',C',D' come from NAND gates with tied inputs.

Total: 4 + 1 + 1 = 6 NAND gates, plus 4 NAND inverters for the input complements.

Why alphabets are used for representing number above 9 in hexadecimal number system?

Answer

Hexadecimal has 16 digits, but the decimal system provides only the single symbols 0 to 9. The values 10 to 15 therefore need extra single-character symbols, and the letters A to F are used (A=10, B=11, C=12, D=13, E=14, F=15). Writing them as "10", "11" and so on would be ambiguous, since "10" would look like the two digits 1 and 0.

Why NAND gate is said to be universal gate?

Answer

A NAND gate is universal because NOT, AND and OR gates can all be built from NAND gates alone: NOT is a NAND with its inputs tied together, AND is a NAND followed by a NOT, and OR is a NAND of the complemented inputs. Since every Boolean function can be built from AND, OR and NOT, any logic circuit can be made using only NAND gates.

Define noise immunity of IC.

Answer

Noise immunity of an IC is its ability to tolerate unwanted noise voltage on its inputs without the output changing its logic level incorrectly. It is measured by the noise margin: VNH=VOH(min)−VIH(min)V_{NH}=V_{OH(min)}-V_{IH(min)} for the high state and VNL=VIL(max)−VOL(max)V_{NL}=V_{IL(max)}-V_{OL(max)} for the low state. The larger the margin, the better the noise immunity.

If the word size of a memory is 32-bit and size of memory is 2GB then what will be the size of address decoder?

Answer

Memory size is 2 GB=2312\text{ GB}=2^{31} bytes, and the word size is 32 bits = 4 bytes = 222^2 bytes.

Number of words=23122=229\text{Number of words}=\frac{2^{31}}{2^{2}}=2^{29}

Explain Setup time, Hold time, Propagation delay, Power dissipation and Maximum clock frequency of flip flop.

Answer

  • Setup time (tsut_{su}): the minimum time the data input must be stable before the active clock edge so that it is reliably captured.
  • Hold time (tht_h): the minimum time the data input must remain stable after the active clock edge.
  • Propagation delay (tpdt_{pd}): the time between the active clock edge and the moment the output reaches its new stable level (for example tPLHt_{PLH} and tPHLt_{PHL}).
  • Power dissipation: the power the flip-flop consumes, P=VCC×ICCP=V_{CC}\times I_{CC} (average), usually given in mW. It limits how many devices fit in a system and how much heat is produced.
  • Maximum clock frequency (fmaxf_{max}): the highest clock rate at which the flip-flop triggers reliably. It is limited by the propagation delay and the minimum clock pulse widths, roughly fmax≈1/(tpd+tsu)f_{max}\approx 1/(t_{pd}+t_{su}).

You are provided with data bits 101101 to operate in a register which supports I/O (single bit per clock pulse) from either side of it. Also draw timing diagram to illustrate store /retrieve operation.

Answer

The register is a 6-bit bidirectional serial-in serial-out shift register. Each D flip-flop has a 2:1 multiplexer on its input, controlled by MM: Di=M′Qi−1+MQi+1D_i = M'Q_{i-1}+MQ_{i+1}. M=0M=0 shifts right, M=1M=1 shifts left. Data enters one bit per clock pulse and leaves from the opposite end.

Store (shift right, serial input at the left, bits fed 1,0,1,1,0,1), state Q0Q1Q2Q3Q4Q5Q_0Q_1Q_2Q_3Q_4Q_5:

ClockInputQ0Q1Q2Q3Q4Q5Q_0Q_1Q_2Q_3Q_4Q_5
0-000000
11100000
20010000
31101000
41110100
50011010
61101101

Retrieve: further clock pulses move the bits out through Q5Q_5 in the order stored: 1, 0, 1, 1, 0, 1 (first bit available after pulse 6, then at pulses 7 to 11).

Left shift (input at Q5Q_5, output from Q0Q_0) gives 000001, 000011, 000110, 001101, 011011, 101101 after pulses 1 to 6, and then 101101 leaves from Q0Q_0.

Timing diagram: the clock has 6 pulses. Q0Q_0 is high at pulses 1, 3, 4, 6 style transitions given by the table above, with every output changing only on the rising clock edge, one position per pulse. The serial data line is 1,0,1,1,0,1 and the bit sequence moves through Q0→Q5Q_0\to Q_5, one stage per clock.

Draw state diagram and construct state table for sequence recognizer machine which recognizes bit pattern 11001.

Answer

Sequence 11001 (overlapping), Mealy machine.

States: S0S_0 = start, S1S_1 = "1", S2S_2 = "11", S3S_3 = "110", S4S_4 = "1100".

S0 --0/0--> S0        S2 --1/0--> S2
S1 --0/0--> S0        S3 --1/0--> S1
                      S4 --0/0--> S0

Design 10x1 Multiplexer using only NOR gates.

Answer

A 10x1 multiplexer has 10 data inputs I0…I9I_0\ldots I_9, four select lines S3S2S1S0S_3S_2S_1S_0 (24≥102^4\ge10) and one output.

Y=∑i=09Ii mi(S3,S2,S1,S0)Y=\sum_{i=0}^{9} I_i\,m_i(S_3,S_2,S_1,S_0)

NOR-only implementation. By De Morgan, Ii⋅mi=Ii′+(complemented select literals)‾I_i\cdot m_i=\overline{I_i'+(\text{complemented select literals})}. So each product term is one NOR gate:

Ti=NOR(Ii′, c3,c2,c1,c0)T_i=\text{NOR}(I_i',\,c_3,c_2,c_1,c_0)

where ck=Skc_k=S_k if bit kk of ii is 0, and ck=Sk′c_k=S_k' if bit kk of ii is 1. For example T5T_5 (0101) =NOR(I5′,S3,S2′,S1,S0′)=\text{NOR}(I_5',S_3,S_2',S_1,S_0'), and T0=NOR(I0′,S3,S2,S1,S0)T_0=\text{NOR}(I_0',S_3,S_2,S_1,S_0).

Then

Y=T0+T1+⋯+T9=NOR(NOR(T0,…,T9))Y=T_0+T_1+\dots+T_9=\text{NOR}\big(\text{NOR}(T_0,\dots,T_9)\big)

The inner 10-input NOR gives the complement of the OR, and a second NOR used as an inverter restores YY.

Gate count: 4 inverters for S3′…S0′S_3'\ldots S_0', 10 inverters for I0′…I9′I_0'\ldots I_9' (NOR gates with tied inputs), 10 five-input NOR gates for TiT_i, one 10-input NOR, and one NOR inverter. The select values 10 to 15 are unused.

Convert given SOP expression: ABC+ABCD+ABD+ABˉD+CD+ABD+BDABC+ABCD+ABD+A\bar BD+CD+ABD+BD to POS expression and draw circuit of minimized expression using minimum number of NAND gates.

Answer

F=ABC+ABCD+ABD+AB′D+CD+ABD+BDF=ABC+ABCD+ABD+AB'D+CD+ABD+BD

Simplify. ABCDABCD is absorbed by ABCABC. ABD+AB′D=ADABD+AB'D=AD. ADAD also absorbs the repeated ABDABD.

F=ABC+AD+BD+CDF=ABC+AD+BD+CD

Minterms: F=Σ(3,5,7,9,11,13,14,15)F=\Sigma(3,5,7,9,11,13,14,15), and F′=Σ(0,1,2,4,6,8,10,12)F'=\Sigma(0,1,2,4,6,8,10,12).

K-map of the 0s:

AB \ CD00011110
000010
010110
110111
100110

Groups: 0,1→A′B′C′0,1\to A'B'C'; 0,2,4,6→A′D′0,2,4,6\to A'D'; 0,2,8,10→B′D′0,2,8,10\to B'D'; 0,4,8,12→C′D′0,4,8,12\to C'D'.

F′=A′B′C′+A′D′+B′D′+C′D′F'=A'B'C'+A'D'+B'D'+C'D'

Complementing gives the POS:

F=(A+B+C)(A+D)(B+D)(C+D)F=(A+B+C)(A+D)(B+D)(C+D)

Check: (A+D)(B+D)(C+D)=D+ABC(A+D)(B+D)(C+D)=D+ABC, and (A+B+C)(D+ABC)=AD+BD+CD+ABC(A+B+C)(D+ABC)=AD+BD+CD+ABC, which matches.

NAND circuit. The cheapest NAND circuit comes from the equivalent two-level form F=ABC+AD+BD+CDF=ABC+AD+BD+CD:

F=ABC‾⋅AD‾⋅BD‾⋅CD‾‾F=\overline{\overline{ABC}\cdot\overline{AD}\cdot\overline{BD}\cdot\overline{CD}}

  • Level 1: NAND gates for ABCABC (3-input), ADAD, BDBD, CDCD (2-input).
  • Level 2: one 4-input NAND combining the four outputs.

Total: 5 NAND gates and no inverters, since all literals are uncomplemented. Building the POS form directly with NAND needs complemented inputs and an extra inverter, so it costs more gates.

Answer

The counter must count 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,1,…1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,1,\dots (8 states). Bit Q0Q_0 is always 1, so only Q3Q2Q1Q_3Q_2Q_1 needs flip-flops that count in binary 000→111000\to111.

Use JK flip-flops with a common clock. From the excitation table:

  • Q0Q_0: always 1, so it is tied to logic 1 (or J0=1,K0=0J_0=1,K_0=0 after presetting).
  • Q1Q_1 toggles on every clock: J1=K1=1J_1=K_1=1.
  • Q2Q_2 toggles when Q1=1Q_1=1: J2=K2=Q1J_2=K_2=Q_1.
  • Q3Q_3 toggles when Q2Q1=11Q_2Q_1=11: J3=K3=Q2Q1J_3=K_3=Q_2Q_1.

Circuit: three JK flip-flops on one clock with J1=K1=1J_1=K_1=1, J2=K2=Q1J_2=K_2=Q_1, an AND gate giving J3=K3=Q1Q2J_3=K_3=Q_1Q_2, and Q0Q_0 fixed at 1. The output is the odd number Q3Q2Q1Q0Q_3Q_2Q_1Q_0 from 1 to 15, repeating.

If F=(A+B+D)′(A+C)(A+C+D)(A′+B+C′′)F=(A+B+D)'(A+C)(A+C+D)(A'+B+C'') then minimize it using K-MAP and design a circuit using minimum number of NOR gates only.

Answer

Reading the function as F=(A+B+D)′ (A+C) (A+C+D) (A′+B+C′)F=(A+B+D)'\,(A+C)\,(A+C+D)\,(A'+B+C').

Expand the first factor. (A+B+D)′=A′B′D′(A+B+D)'=A'B'D', so

F=A′B′D′ (A+C) (A+C+D) (A′+B+C′)F=A'B'D'\,(A+C)\,(A+C+D)\,(A'+B+C')

Evaluate on a K-map. Since A′B′D′A'B'D' forces A=0,B=0,D=0A=0,B=0,D=0:

  • (A+C)(A+C) then requires C=1C=1.
  • (A+C+D)(A+C+D) is then 1.
  • (A′+B+C′)(A'+B+C') is 1 because A′=1A'=1.

So F=A′B′CD′F=A'B'CD', which is the single minterm m2m_2 (0010).

AB \ CD00011110
000001
010000
110000
100000

The single 1 cannot be grouped with others, so the minimal SOP is A′B′CD′A'B'CD'.

NOR realization. By De Morgan,

F=A′B′CD′=A+B+C′+D‾=NOR(A,B,C′,D)F=A'B'CD'=\overline{A+B+C'+D}=\text{NOR}(A,B,C',D)

Circuit: one NOR gate acting as inverter to produce C′C' (inputs tied together), and one 4-input NOR gate with inputs A,B,C′,DA,B,C',D. This needs 2 NOR gates in total.

NAND-only implementation.

  1. Complements Sk′S_k' are made by NAND gates with tied inputs (4 gates).
  2. For each output a 5-input NAND takes DD and the four select literals: Gi=D⋅mi‾G_i=\overline{D\cdot m_i} (11 gates).

Design Bidirectional shift register and operate it with 110111 from both ends.

Answer

Design. A 6-bit bidirectional shift register is used, since the data 110111110111 has 6 bits. It is built from six D flip-flops Q0…Q5Q_0\ldots Q_5 on a common clock. Each input has a 2:1 multiplexer controlled by the direction input MM:

Di=M′ Qi−1+M Qi+1D_i = M'\,Q_{i-1} + M\,Q_{i+1}

  • M=0M=0: shift right. D0=D_0= serial input (right-shift data), Di=Qi−1D_i=Q_{i-1}.
  • M=1M=1: shift left. D5=D_5= serial input (left-shift data), Di=Qi+1D_i=Q_{i+1}.

Each multiplexer is realized by two AND gates and one OR gate with MM and M′M'.

Operation 1: shift right, bits fed in the order 1,1,0,1,1,1 at the left end (M=0M=0).

Write Short Notes on:
a. PLA b. ULSI c. Memory organization d. Digital Codes

Answer

a. PLA (Programmable Logic Array)

A PLA is a programmable logic device with a programmable AND plane followed by a programmable OR plane. Inputs (true and complemented) feed the AND array that forms product terms, and the OR array sums selected product terms to form the outputs. Because both planes are programmable, a product term can be shared by several outputs, which makes PLAs flexible and economical for implementing several SOP functions together. For example F1=AB+CDF_1=AB+CD and F2=AB+C′F_2=AB+C' can share the term ABAB. A PLA is described by its number of inputs, product terms and outputs. It is slower and more complex than a PAL, in which only the AND plane is programmable.

b. ULSI (Ultra Large Scale Integration)

ULSI is an integration level where a single chip contains more than about 1 million (some definitions say more than 10 million) transistors. Examples are modern microprocessors, large memories and system-on-chip devices. ULSI follows SSI, MSI, LSI and VLSI, and gives higher speed, lower power per function, smaller size and lower cost per function, at the price of design complexity and heat management.

c. Memory organization

Memory is organized as an array of storage cells arranged in words. A memory with 2n2^n words of mm bits needs nn address lines, mm data lines and control lines (read/write, chip select). An address decoder selects one word line from the address, and the selected word is read or written on the data bus. Memory size is 2n×m2^n\times m bits, for example 1K x 8 uses 10 address lines. Large memories are built by combining chips: widening the word (more chips in parallel) and increasing depth (using decoders on the higher address lines). The memory hierarchy ranges from registers and cache to main memory and secondary storage.

d. Digital codes

Digital codes represent numbers, letters and symbols in binary form. Main types:

  • Weighted codes: BCD (8421), 2421.
  • Non-weighted codes: Excess-3 (self-complementing), Gray code (only one bit changes between successive values, used in encoders and K-maps).
  • Alphanumeric codes: ASCII (7/8 bit) and EBCDIC, Unicode.
  • Error detecting/correcting codes: parity bit, Hamming code.

F=XYZ+X′YY+XYZ′F=XYZ+X'YY+XYZ'

Since YY=YYY=Y:

F=XYZ+X′Y+XYZ′=XY(Z+Z′)+X′Y=XY+X′Y=Y(X+X′)=YF=XYZ+X'Y+XYZ'=XY(Z+Z')+X'Y=XY+X'Y=Y(X+X')=Y

The minimum form is F=YF=Y, which has a single literal.

How the number of Input and Output are related in an Encoder?

Answer

An encoder has at most 2n2^n input lines and nn output lines. In general, for NN inputs the number of outputs is n=⌈log⁡2N⌉n=\lceil\log_2 N\rceil. For example an 8x3 encoder has 8 inputs and 3 outputs, and only one input is active at a time. It converts the active input line into its binary code.

Define Positive edge triggering.

Answer

Positive edge triggering means that the flip-flop responds to its inputs and changes its output only at the instant the clock goes from LOW to HIGH (the rising edge, 0 to 1). At all other times, including while the clock stays high or low, the output does not change.

Define a state table.

Answer

A state table is a table that lists, for a sequential circuit, the next state and the output for every combination of present state and input. Its columns are present state, input, next state and output. It is the tabular form of the state diagram and is used to derive the flip-flop input equations.

What is the use of Address decoder?

Answer

An address decoder takes the address lines and activates exactly one output line, which selects a particular memory location or memory chip (or I/O device). It enables the chip select/word line so that only the addressed location is read or written.

Why PLA is more flexible than PAL?

Answer

In a PLA both the AND plane and the OR plane are programmable, so any product term can be connected to any output and product terms can be shared among outputs. In a PAL only the AND plane is programmable and the OR plane is fixed, so each output gets a fixed number of product terms and sharing is not possible. Hence the PLA is more flexible.

Write down two major characteristics of TTL logic family.

Answer

  1. Speed: TTL has a short propagation delay (about 10 ns for standard TTL), so it is fast. It also has a totem-pole output giving good drive capability.
  2. Fan-out and supply: standard TTL has a fan-out of about 10, operates from a +5 V supply, and has a noise margin of about 0.4 V. Power dissipation is relatively high (about 10 mW per gate).

Explain the operational characteristics of a T Flip-Flop with logic diagram

Answer

The T (toggle) flip-flop has one data input TT and a clock. It is obtained from a JK flip-flop by joining JJ and KK together as TT.

Logic diagram: a JK flip-flop with J=K=TJ=K=T and outputs QQ and Q′Q'. Equivalently a D flip-flop with D=T⊕QD=T\oplus Q (an XOR gate feeds DD from TT and the output QQ).

Operation

TQtQ_tQt+1Q_{t+1}Action
000No change
011No change
101Toggle
110Toggle
  • When T=0T=0 the output holds its previous state at the clock edge.
  • When T=1T=1 the output changes to its complement at each active clock edge.

Characteristic equation: Qt+1=T⊕QtQ_{t+1}=T\oplus Q_t.

With T=1T=1 permanently, the output frequency is half of the clock frequency, so the T flip-flop works as a divide-by-2 circuit and is the basic element of counters.

Design a shift register where the binary data "1110" can be loaded simultaneously in a single clock pulse after the Data is loaded the output is generated from left most Flip Flop one bit at a time.

Answer

This is a parallel-in serial-out (PISO) shift register using four D flip-flops Q0Q1Q2Q3Q_0Q_1Q_2Q_3, where Q0Q_0 is the left-most and the serial output. A control input LL (SHIFT/LOAD‾\overline{\text{LOAD}}) selects the mode.

Design. Each flip-flop input has a 2:1 multiplexer:

Di=L′ Pi+L Qi+1(i=0,1,2),D3=L′ P3D_i = L'\,P_i + L\,Q_{i+1}\quad(i=0,1,2),\qquad D_3 = L'\,P_3

  • L=0L=0: load. The parallel data P0P1P2P3=1110P_0P_1P_2P_3=1110 is loaded into all flip-flops on one clock pulse.
  • L=1L=1: shift left. Each bit moves one place towards Q0Q_0, a 0 enters at Q3Q_3, and the output is taken from Q0Q_0.

Operation

Clock pulseModeQ0Q1Q2Q3Q_0Q_1Q_2Q_3Serial output Q0Q_0
1Load (L=0L=0)11101
2Shift11001
3Shift10001
4Shift00000

Reading Q0Q_0 before each shift gives the bits 1, 1, 1, 0 (the original data 1110, left-most bit first), one bit per clock pulse after the single-pulse parallel load.

Design a combinational circuit that convert 3-bit binary into its equivalent gray code.

Answer

3-bit binary to Gray code converter

Let the binary input be B2B1B0B_2B_1B_0 and the Gray output be G2G1G0G_2G_1G_0. The rule is: the MSB is copied, and each other Gray bit is the XOR of the corresponding binary bit and the next higher binary bit.

001001
010011
011010
100110
101111
110101
111100

Simplifying with K-maps gives:

G2=B2G_2 = B_2 G1=B2′B1+B2B1′=B2⊕B1G_1 = B_2'B_1 + B_2B_1' = B_2 \oplus B_1 G0=B1′B0+B1B0′=B1⊕B0G_0 = B_1'B_0 + B_1B_0' = B_1 \oplus B_0

Circuit: B2B_2 is connected directly to G2G_2. One XOR gate with inputs B2,B1B_2, B_1 gives G1G_1, and a second XOR gate with inputs B1,B0B_1, B_0 gives G0G_0. The whole converter needs only two XOR gates.

Convert
a. (1A2.2B)16(1A2.2B)_{16} into Binary and Octal Form b. Design a 2-bit odd parity generator.

Answer

(a) Convert (1A2.2B)16(1A2.2B)_{16} to binary and octal.

Replace each hex digit by its 4-bit group: 1 = 0001, A = 1010, 2 = 0010, 2 = 0010, B = 1011.

(1A2.2B)16=(0001 1010 0010.0010 1011)2=(110100010.00101011)2(1A2.2B)_{16} = (0001\,1010\,0010.0010\,1011)_2 = (110100010.00101011)_2

For octal, regroup in 3 bits: the integer part from the right and the fraction from the left, padding with zeros.

  • Integer: 110 100 010 gives 6 4 2
  • Fraction: 001 010 110 gives 1 2 6

(1A2.2B)16=(642.126)8(1A2.2B)_{16} = (642.126)_8

(b) 2-bit odd parity generator.

The parity bit PP is chosen so that the total number of 1s in A,B,PA, B, P is odd.

AABBPP

P=A′B′+AB=(A⊕B)′P = A'B' + AB = (A \oplus B)'

The circuit is one XOR gate followed by a NOT gate, or equivalently a single XNOR gate with inputs A,BA, B.

If a Boolean function f=(AB+C)⋅(A+B+C)f=(AB+C)\cdot(A+B+C) with a don't care condition d=(A+D+C)d=(A+D+C), solve using K-map and Design a circuit only using
a. Minimum number of NAND gates. b. Minimum number of NOR gates.

Answer

The don't-care term is read as an expression in the variables A,B,CA, B, C (the "D" is taken as a misprint of BB), i.e. d=A+B+Cd = A+B+C.

Simplify the function. Since AB+CAB + C implies A+B+CA+B+C, we get f=(AB+C)(A+B+C)=AB+Cf = (AB+C)(A+B+C) = AB + C.

f=Σm(1,3,5,6,7)f = \Sigma m(1,3,5,6,7)

The don't-care expression A+B+CA+B+C is 1 for every minterm except 0. The ones not already in ff are the true don't cares: d=Σd(2,4)d = \Sigma d(2,4).

K-map (rows AA, columns BCBC in Gray order 00, 01, 11, 10):

A\BCA \backslash BC00011110
0011X
1X111

Groups: the quad m1,m3,m5,m7m_1,m_3,m_5,m_7 gives CC. The quad m2,m3,m6,m7m_2,m_3,m_6,m_7 (using the don't care m2m_2) gives BB.

fmin=B+Cf_{min} = B + C

(a) Only NAND gates. By De Morgan: f=B+C=(B′⋅C′)′=NAND(B′,C′)f = B + C = (B'\cdot C')' = \text{NAND}(B', C') B′B' and C′C' are made by NAND gates with both inputs tied together. Minimum: 3 NAND gates (two as inverters, one as the output gate).

(b) Only NOR gates. f=B+C=((B+C)′)′f = B + C = \big((B+C)'\big)' One NOR gate produces (B+C)′(B+C)' and a second NOR gate with its inputs tied together inverts it. Minimum: 2 NOR gates.
