Which image file format is commonly used for lossless image compression on the web?
(a) JPG (b) PNG (c) MP3 (d) MOV

Answer

(b) PNG

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) uses lossless compression, so no image data is lost when the file is saved or compressed. JPG uses lossy compression, while MP3 and MOV are audio and video formats respectively.

Answer

Raster graphics vs Vector graphics

Raster graphicsVector graphics
Made of a grid of pixels (picture elements).Made of mathematical paths defined by points, lines and curves.
Resolution dependent — enlarging makes the image blurry or pixelated.Resolution independent — can be scaled to any size without losing quality.

Examples: Raster — photographs, scanned images (JPEG, PNG, BMP); Vector — logos, clip art (SVG, AI, EPS).

Describe the major components of multimedia. Explain any two uses of multimedia in education.

Answer

Major components of multimedia

  1. Text – The most basic element; words, sentences and paragraphs used to convey information. It may be formatted (font, size, colour) to make the message clear.
  2. Graphics/Images – Pictures, drawings, charts, diagrams and photographs that present information visually. They include both bitmap (raster) and vector images.
  3. Audio – Sound in the form of speech, music or sound effects. It makes content lively and is useful where reading is difficult.
  4. Video – Moving pictures with or without sound. It shows real events and processes in action and is the most expressive component.
  5. Animation – A sequence of still images shown rapidly to create the illusion of movement. It is used to explain processes and to attract attention.
  6. Interactive media/Hypertext – Elements such as buttons, menus, links and forms that let the user control the flow of the presentation instead of only watching it.

Two uses of multimedia in education

  1. E-learning and virtual classrooms – Lessons delivered through audio, video, animation and interactive exercises let students learn at their own pace and from any place. Difficult topics (for example, the working of the heart or the solar system) can be shown through animation instead of only being read from a book.
  2. Computer-aided teaching and presentations – Teachers use slides, projectors, educational CDs and simulations to explain lessons in class. This makes learning more interesting, holds the students' attention and helps them remember the content for a longer time.
