Draw a well labelled diagram of laboratory preparation of ammonia gas. Write a method to test the gas in the gas jar.
Answer
Laboratory preparation of ammonia
Clamp stand
|
[Hard glass test tube] (mouth slightly downward)
NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2 mixture <-- heat (burner)
\
\ delivery tube
\__ [Lime tower: CaO / quicklime] __
\
+---------+
| inverted| <- gas jar (downward
| gas jar | displacement of air)
| NH3 gas |
+---------+
Reaction: A mixture of ammonium chloride and slaked lime is heated.
The gas is dried by passing it through a lime (CaO) tower and collected by downward displacement of air, because it is lighter than air.
Test of the gas in the gas jar:
- Bring a moist red litmus paper into the jar. It turns blue, because ammonia dissolves in the moisture to form basic ammonium hydroxide.
- (Also, a glass rod dipped in conc. HCl held at the mouth of the jar gives dense white fumes of NHCl.)
- The pungent smell is a further identification.

Answer

\__ [Lime tower: CaO / quicklime] __

Label (any one): Lime tower (CaO) is placed between the test tube and the gas jar to dry the gas. (Other parts: hard glass test tube with NHCl + Ca(OH); burner; inverted gas jar.)
Function of lime tower: It contains quicklime (CaO), which absorbs the water vapour present in the ammonia gas, so dry ammonia is obtained. CaO is basic, so it does not react with ammonia (acidic drying agents like conc. HSO or CaCl cannot be used).

(i) Which gas is collected in the gas jar?
(ii) Write a use of the gas formed in this process.
(iii) Why is CaO used while preparing this gas?
(iv) If a wet red litmus paper is inserted inside the gas jar, what change will be seen in the litmus paper?
Figure: Apparatus: a hard test tube heated on a stand containing NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2, delivery tube leading to a CaO drying tower (CaO), then to a gas jar held upside down (downward displacement of air) on a clamp stand.
Answer
(i) Ammonia gas (NH) is collected in the gas jar.
(ii) Ammonia is used to make fertilizers such as urea and ammonium sulphate (also used in refrigeration, and to make nitric acid).
(iii) CaO (quicklime) is used to dry the gas. It absorbs the moisture from ammonia and, being basic, does not react with ammonia.
(iv) The wet red litmus paper turns blue, because ammonia dissolves in water to form ammonium hydroxide, which is a base (alkali): .

Figure: Laboratory preparation of ammonia: a hard-glass test tube heated with NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2 mixture (A), delivery tube leading to an upright gas jar (B) with a drying tower/tube (C) containing a drying agent between them.

(a) Which gas is being collected in the gas jar?
(b) What would happen if this gas is directly sent to the gas jar without passing tower X?
(c) Write the balanced chemical equation of the gas prepared in laboratory.
Figure: Laboratory preparation setup: a hard glass test tube tilted and heated, containing NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2, delivery tube to a drying tower X (packed with a drying agent), then to a gas jar collecting the gas by downward displacement of air (jar inverted).
Answer
(a) Ammonia gas (NH) is collected in the gas jar.
(b) Tower X contains quicklime (CaO), the drying agent. Without it, the gas would contain water vapour, so moist (wet) ammonia would be collected. It would be impure and would dissolve in the water droplets, forming ammonium hydroxide solution instead of dry gas.

The given figure of laboratory preparation of a gas shows a setting of apparatus which has two major errors. Identify the errors and suggest the correct setting of the apparatus.
Figure: Apparatus for laboratory preparation of a gas: a hard-glass test tube containing a mixture (labelled NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2) clamped on a stand with its mouth tilted upward, heated from below; a delivery tube leads to a gas jar held on a stand, with a drying tower labelled CaCl2 (calcium chloride tower) attached to the jar setup and a funnel/tube at the top.
Answer
Errors:
- The mouth of the hard-glass test tube is tilted upward. The water formed in the reaction condenses and flows back to the hot glass, cracking it.
- The drying agent used is calcium chloride (CaCl). It reacts with ammonia (), so ammonia is lost.
Correct setting:
- Clamp the test tube with its mouth slightly downward.
- Use a lime tower containing quicklime (CaO) to dry the gas.
- Collect ammonia in an inverted gas jar (downward displacement of air), as the gas is lighter than air.

Figure: Laboratory set-up: a Woulfe's bottle containing CaCO3 (marble chips) at the bottom, with a thistle funnel through which dil. HCl is added and a delivery tube leading to an upright gas jar.

Clarify the cause of selecting dil. HCl instead of dil. HSO during laboratory preparation of carbon dioxide. What tests do you need to perform before entering into a well to prevent suffocation?
Answer
Why dil. HCl, not dil. HSO: HSO reacts with CaCO to form insoluble calcium sulphate, which coats the marble chips and stops the reaction. HCl forms soluble CaCl, so the reaction continues until the chips are used up.
Tests before entering a well: CO may have collected in the well (it is heavy and does not support breathing). So:
- Lower a burning candle into the well. If it is extinguished, CO (or lack of oxygen) is present, and it is unsafe to enter.
- Lower a vessel of lime water and bring it up; if it turns milky, CO is present.

Figure: Two gas-preparation setups, Figure A and Figure B: each has a flask with a thistle funnel, a solid at the bottom with liquid above, a delivery tube leading to a gas jar; litmus paper (labelled) is held in the jar in each setup.
