If A+B+C=180∘A+B+C=180^\circ, then prove that:
cos⁡2A2+cos⁡2B2+cos⁡2C2=2+2sin⁡A2sin⁡B2sin⁡C2\cos^2\frac{A}{2}+\cos^2\frac{B}{2}+\cos^2\frac{C}{2}=2+2\sin\frac{A}{2}\sin\frac{B}{2}\sin\frac{C}{2}

Similar questions: sinA - sinB + sinC identity (2082 Grade increment)

Answer

Let

x=A2,y=B2,z=C2.x=\frac A2,\quad y=\frac B2,\quad z=\frac C2.

Since A+B+C=180∘A+B+C=180^\circ, we have

x+y+z=90∘.x+y+z=90^\circ.

Now,

cos⁡2x+cos⁡2y+cos⁡2z\cos^2x+\cos^2y+\cos^2z =cos⁡2x+cos⁡2y+cos⁡2(90∘−(x+y))=\cos^2x+\cos^2y+\cos^2(90^\circ-(x+y)) =cos⁡2x+cos⁡2y+sin⁡2(x+y).=\cos^2x+\cos^2y+\sin^2(x+y).

Using

cos⁡2x+cos⁡2y=1+cos⁡(x+y)cos⁡(x−y)\cos^2x+\cos^2y=1+\cos(x+y)\cos(x-y)

and

sin⁡2(x+y)=1−cos⁡2(x+y),\sin^2(x+y)=1-\cos^2(x+y),

we get

cos⁡2x+cos⁡2y+sin⁡2(x+y)\cos^2x+\cos^2y+\sin^2(x+y) =2+cos⁡(x+y)cos⁡(x−y)−cos⁡2(x+y)=2+\cos(x+y)\cos(x-y)-\cos^2(x+y) =2+cos⁡(x+y){cos⁡(x−y)−cos⁡(x+y)}.=2+\cos(x+y)\{\cos(x-y)-\cos(x+y)\}.

Now,

cos⁡(x−y)−cos⁡(x+y)=2sin⁡xsin⁡y.\cos(x-y)-\cos(x+y)=2\sin x\sin y.

So,

=2+2sin⁡xsin⁡ycos⁡(x+y).=2+2\sin x\sin y\cos(x+y).

But since x+y+z=90∘x+y+z=90^\circ,

cos⁡(x+y)=sin⁡z.\cos(x+y)=\sin z.

Therefore,

cos⁡2x+cos⁡2y+cos⁡2z=2+2sin⁡xsin⁡ysin⁡z.\cos^2x+\cos^2y+\cos^2z=2+2\sin x\sin y\sin z.

Replacing x,y,zx,y,z by A2,B2,C2\frac A2,\frac B2,\frac C2, we get

cos⁡2A2+cos⁡2B2+cos⁡2C2=2+2sin⁡A2sin⁡B2sin⁡C2\boxed{\cos^2\frac A2+\cos^2\frac B2+\cos^2\frac C2=2+2\sin\frac A2\sin\frac B2\sin\frac C2}

Hence proved.

If A+B+C=πcA+B+C=\pi^c, then prove that:
sin⁡A−sin⁡B+sin⁡C=4sin⁡A2cos⁡B2sin⁡C2\sin A-\sin B+\sin C=4\sin\frac{A}{2}\cos\frac{B}{2}\sin\frac{C}{2}

Similar questions: If A+B+C=180^circ, then prove that: cos^2frac{A}{2}+cos^2frac{B}{2}+cos^2frac{C}{2}=2+2sinfrac{A}{2}sinfrac{B}{2}sinfrac{C}{2} (2082 Chaitra · Set B)

Answer

Since A+B+C=πA+B+C=\pi, we have A+C2=π2−B2\dfrac{A+C}2=\dfrac\pi2-\dfrac B2.

LHS=(sin⁡A+sin⁡C)−sin⁡B\text{LHS}=(\sin A+\sin C)-\sin B

sin⁡A+sin⁡C=2sin⁡A+C2cos⁡A−C2=2cos⁡B2cos⁡A−C2\sin A+\sin C=2\sin\frac{A+C}2\cos\frac{A-C}2=2\cos\frac B2\cos\frac{A-C}2

sin⁡B=2sin⁡B2cos⁡B2\sin B=2\sin\frac B2\cos\frac B2

So LHS=2cos⁡B2[cos⁡A−C2−sin⁡B2]\text{LHS}=2\cos\frac B2\left[\cos\frac{A-C}2-\sin\frac B2\right]

Also sin⁡B2=cos⁡A+C2\sin\dfrac B2=\cos\dfrac{A+C}2, hence cos⁡A−C2−cos⁡A+C2=2sin⁡A2sin⁡C2\cos\frac{A-C}2-\cos\frac{A+C}2=2\sin\frac A2\sin\frac C2

LHS=2cos⁡B2⋅2sin⁡A2sin⁡C2=4sin⁡A2cos⁡B2sin⁡C2=RHS\text{LHS}=2\cos\frac B2\cdot2\sin\frac A2\sin\frac C2=4\sin\frac A2\cos\frac B2\sin\frac C2=\text{RHS}

Hence proved.

Prove that:
sin⁡Acos⁡A−sin⁡Bcos⁡Bcos⁡2B−cos⁡2A=cot⁡(A+B)\frac{\sin A\cos A-\sin B\cos B}{\cos^2B-\cos^2A}=\cot(A+B)

Answer

L.H.S.=sin⁡Acos⁡A−sin⁡Bcos⁡Bcos⁡2B−cos⁡2A\text{L.H.S.}=\frac{\sin A\cos A-\sin B\cos B}{\cos^2B-\cos^2A}

First simplify the numerator:

sin⁡Acos⁡A−sin⁡Bcos⁡B=12(sin⁡2A−sin⁡2B)\sin A\cos A-\sin B\cos B=\frac12(\sin2A-\sin2B)

Using sin⁡C−sin⁡D=2cos⁡C+D2sin⁡C−D2\sin C-\sin D=2\cos\frac{C+D}{2}\sin\frac{C-D}{2},

12(sin⁡2A−sin⁡2B)=12⋅2cos⁡(A+B)sin⁡(A−B)=cos⁡(A+B)sin⁡(A−B)\frac12(\sin2A-\sin2B) =\frac12\cdot 2\cos(A+B)\sin(A-B) =\cos(A+B)\sin(A-B)

Now simplify the denominator:

cos⁡2B−cos⁡2A=(1−sin⁡2B)−(1−sin⁡2A)=sin⁡2A−sin⁡2B\cos^2B-\cos^2A =(1-\sin^2B)-(1-\sin^2A) =\sin^2A-\sin^2B

Using sin⁡2A−sin⁡2B=sin⁡(A+B)sin⁡(A−B)\sin^2A-\sin^2B=\sin(A+B)\sin(A-B),

cos⁡2B−cos⁡2A=sin⁡(A+B)sin⁡(A−B)\cos^2B-\cos^2A=\sin(A+B)\sin(A-B)

Therefore,

L.H.S.=cos⁡(A+B)sin⁡(A−B)sin⁡(A+B)sin⁡(A−B)\text{L.H.S.} =\frac{\cos(A+B)\sin(A-B)}{\sin(A+B)\sin(A-B)}

Cancelling sin⁡(A−B)\sin(A-B),

L.H.S.=cos⁡(A+B)sin⁡(A+B)=cot⁡(A+B)\text{L.H.S.}=\frac{\cos(A+B)}{\sin(A+B)} =\cot(A+B) ∴sin⁡Acos⁡A−sin⁡Bcos⁡Bcos⁡2B−cos⁡2A=cot⁡(A+B)\therefore \frac{\sin A\cos A-\sin B\cos B}{\cos^2B-\cos^2A}=\cot(A+B)

Hence proved.

Answer

Since P+Q+R=180∘P+Q+R=180^\circ, P+Q−R=180∘−2R⇒sin⁡(P+Q−R)=sin⁡(180∘−2R)=sin⁡2RP+Q-R=180^\circ-2R\Rightarrow\sin(P+Q-R)=\sin(180^\circ-2R)=\sin2R Similarly sin⁡(Q+R−P)=sin⁡2P\sin(Q+R-P)=\sin2P and sin⁡(R+P−Q)=sin⁡2Q\sin(R+P-Q)=\sin2Q.

So LHS =sin⁡2P+sin⁡2Q+sin⁡2R=\sin2P+\sin2Q+\sin2R.

sin⁡2P+sin⁡2Q=2sin⁡(P+Q)cos⁡(P−Q)=2sin⁡Rcos⁡(P−Q)\sin2P+\sin2Q=2\sin(P+Q)\cos(P-Q)=2\sin R\cos(P-Q) because sin⁡(P+Q)=sin⁡(180∘−R)=sin⁡R\sin(P+Q)=\sin(180^\circ-R)=\sin R. The angles of depression of the top and bottom of a pole 20 m high observed from the top of a tower are found to be 30∘30^\circ and 60∘60^\circ respectively. Find the height of the tower.

Answer

Let the tower be AB=HAB=H m (top AA, foot BB) and the pole CD=20CD=20 m, at horizontal distance dd m from the tower.

Angle of depression of the bottom of the pole is 60∘60^\circ: tan⁡60∘=Hd⇒d=H3\tan60^\circ=\frac{H}{d}\Rightarrow d=\frac{H}{\sqrt3}

Angle of depression of the top of the pole is 30∘30^\circ: tan⁡30∘=H−20d⇒d=3 (H−20)\tan30^\circ=\frac{H-20}{d}\Rightarrow d=\sqrt3\,(H-20)

Equating the two values of dd: H3=3(H−20)⇒H=3H−60⇒H=30\frac{H}{\sqrt3}=\sqrt3(H-20)\Rightarrow H=3H-60\Rightarrow H=30

The height of the tower is 30 m.

Solve (0∘≤θ≤90∘0^\circ\le\theta\le 90^\circ): 4sin⁡θ=cosec⁡θ4\sin\theta=\operatorname{cosec}\theta

Answer

Given: 4sin⁡θ=cosec⁡θ4\sin\theta=\operatorname{cosec}\theta

Since cosec⁡θ=1sin⁡θ\operatorname{cosec}\theta=\dfrac{1}{\sin\theta}, 4sin⁡θ=1sin⁡θ4\sin\theta=\frac{1}{\sin\theta}

Multiplying both sides by sin⁡θ\sin\theta, 4sin⁡2θ=14\sin^2\theta=1 sin⁡2θ=14\sin^2\theta=\frac14 sin⁡θ=±12\sin\theta=\pm\frac12

When the top of a tree is observed from two points lying on the same plane and same side of the tree then the angles of elevation are found to be 30∘30^\circ and 45∘45^\circ respectively. If the distance between the two points is 20 m, then find the height of the tree.

Answer

Let the height of the tree be hh m.

The point with angle of elevation 45∘45^\circ is nearer to the tree.
Let its distance from the foot of the tree be xx m.
Then the distance of the other point from the foot of the tree is (x+20)(x+20) m.

From the nearer point, h=xtan⁡45∘=xh=x\tan45^\circ=x

From the farther point, h=(x+20)tan⁡30∘=x+203h=(x+20)\tan30^\circ=\frac{x+20}{\sqrt3}

Equating the two values of hh, x=x+203x=\frac{x+20}{\sqrt3} 3x=x+20\sqrt3x=x+20 x(3−1)=20x(\sqrt3-1)=20 x=203−1x=\frac{20}{\sqrt3-1} x=20(3+1)3−1=10(3+1)x=\frac{20(\sqrt3+1)}{3-1}=10(\sqrt3+1)

Therefore, h=10(3+1) m≈27.32 mh=10(\sqrt3+1)\text{ m}\approx 27.32\text{ m}

So, the height of the tree is 10(3+1)10(\sqrt3+1) m, i.e. about 27.32 m.

An observer observes from the roof of the house 20 m high to the top and bottom of the television tower and found the angle of elevation and angle of depression to be 45∘45^\circ and 30∘30^\circ respectively. Find the height of the tower.

Answer

Let AA be the observer on the roof of the house, DD the foot of the house (AD=20AD=20 m), BB the bottom and CC the top of the tower, and EE the point on the tower at the level of AA.

Let θ=2x\theta = 2x, so that x=θ2x=\frac{\theta}{2}.

Then,

LHS=sin⁡2x+sin⁡xcos⁡2x+cos⁡x+1\text{LHS}=\frac{\sin 2x+\sin x}{\cos 2x+\cos x+1}

The angles of depression and elevation of the pinnacle of a temple 10 m high with pinnacle are found to be 60∘60^\circ and 30∘30^\circ respectively from the top and bottom of a tower. Find the height of the tower.

Answer

Let the tower be of height hh m, at horizontal distance xx m from the temple. The pinnacle of the temple is 10 m above the ground.

From the bottom of the tower, the angle of elevation of the pinnacle is 30∘30^\circ: tan⁡30∘=10x⇒x=103 m\tan30^\circ=\frac{10}{x}\Rightarrow x=10\sqrt3\text{ m}

From the top of the tower, the angle of depression of the pinnacle is 60∘60^\circ, and the vertical drop is h−10h-10: tan⁡60∘=h−10x⇒3=h−10103⇒h−10=30⇒h=40\tan60^\circ=\frac{h-10}{x}\Rightarrow\sqrt3=\frac{h-10}{10\sqrt3}\Rightarrow h-10=30\Rightarrow h=40

Answer

Using sin⁡(A+B)sin⁡(A−B)=sin⁡2A−sin⁡2B\sin(A+B)\sin(A-B)=\sin^2A-\sin^2B with A=45∘A=45^\circ, B=θB=\theta: sin⁡(45∘+θ)sin⁡(45∘−θ)=sin⁡245∘−sin⁡2θ=12−sin⁡2θ=1−2sin⁡2θ2=cos⁡2θ2\sin(45^\circ+\theta)\sin(45^\circ-\theta)=\sin^245^\circ-\sin^2\theta=\frac12-\sin^2\theta=\frac{1-2\sin^2\theta}{2}=\frac{\cos2\theta}{2}

Answer

Given A+B+C=πcA+B+C=\pi^c, so A+B2=π2−C2\dfrac{A+B}{2}=\dfrac\pi2-\dfrac C2.

sin⁡A+sin⁡B+sin⁡C=2sin⁡A+B2cos⁡A−B2+2sin⁡C2cos⁡C2\sin A+\sin B+\sin C=2\sin\frac{A+B}{2}\cos\frac{A-B}{2}+2\sin\frac C2\cos\frac C2

Since sin⁡A+B2=cos⁡C2\sin\dfrac{A+B}{2}=\cos\dfrac C2, =2cos⁡C2[cos⁡A−B2+sin⁡C2]=2\cos\frac C2\left[\cos\frac{A-B}{2}+\sin\frac C2\right]

Also sin⁡C2=cos⁡A+B2\sin\dfrac C2=\cos\dfrac{A+B}{2}, so cos⁡A−B2+cos⁡A+B2=2cos⁡A2cos⁡B2\cos\frac{A-B}{2}+\cos\frac{A+B}{2}=2\cos\frac A2\cos\frac B2

When an observer observes the top of a pole, the angle of elevation is found to be 60∘60^\circ and the angle of depression is found to be 30∘30^\circ when he/she observes the foot of the same pole. If the height of the observer is 1.8 meter, find the height of the pole.

Answer

Let the observer's eye be at AA, AB=1.8AB=1.8 m above the ground at BB, and let the pole stand at horizontal distance dd from the observer, with foot QQ and top PP. Let hh be the height of the pole.

Angle of depression of the foot is 30∘30^\circ: tan⁡30∘=1.8d⇒d=1.83 m\tan30^\circ=\frac{1.8}{d}\Rightarrow d=1.8\sqrt3\text{ m}

Angle of elevation of the top is 60∘60^\circ; the top is h−1.8h-1.8 m above the level of the eye: tan⁡60∘=h−1.8d⇒h−1.8=3×1.83=5.4\tan60^\circ=\frac{h-1.8}{d}\Rightarrow h-1.8=\sqrt3\times1.8\sqrt3=5.4 h=5.4+1.8=7.2 mh=5.4+1.8=7.2\text{ m}

If cos⁡A3=12(p+1p)\cos\frac{A}{3}=\frac{1}{2}\left(p+\frac{1}{p}\right), find the value of cos⁡A\cos A in terms of pp.

Answer

Let θ=A3\theta=\dfrac{A}{3}, so A=3θA=3\theta and cos⁡θ=12(p+1p)\cos\theta=\dfrac12\left(p+\dfrac1p\right).

cos⁡A=cos⁡3θ=4cos⁡3θ−3cos⁡θ\cos A=\cos3\theta=4\cos^3\theta-3\cos\theta

Now 4cos⁡3θ=4⋅18(p+1p)3=12(p3+3p+3p+1p3)4\cos^3\theta=4\cdot\frac18\left(p+\frac1p\right)^3=\frac12\left(p^3+3p+\frac3p+\frac1{p^3}\right) 3cos⁡θ=32(p+1p)3\cos\theta=\frac32\left(p+\frac1p\right)

The angles of elevation of the top of a building from two points situated on the same plane and at the same side of the building are 30∘30^\circ and 45∘45^\circ respectively. If the distance between the two places is 10 m, find the height of the building.

Answer

Let the building be ABAB of height hh m, with BB its foot. Let CC (nearer) and DD (farther) be the two points on the same side, CD=10CD=10 m, and let BC=xBC=x m.

From CC (elevation 45∘45^\circ): tan⁡45∘=hx⇒h=x\tan45^\circ=\dfrac hx\Rightarrow h=x.

From DD (elevation 30∘30^\circ): tan⁡30∘=hx+10⇒\tan30^\circ=\dfrac h{x+10}\Rightarrow 13=hx+10⇒x+10=3 h\frac1{\sqrt3}=\frac h{x+10}\Rightarrow x+10=\sqrt3\,h

Substituting x=hx=h: h+10=3 h⇒h(3−1)=10h+10=\sqrt3\,h\Rightarrow h(\sqrt3-1)=10 h=103−1⋅3+13+1=5(3+1)≈13.66h=\frac{10}{\sqrt3-1}\cdot\frac{\sqrt3+1}{\sqrt3+1}=5(\sqrt3+1)\approx13.66

The angle of depression of the roof of a house 25 m high from the top of a tower is found to be 45∘45^\circ and the angle of elevation of the top of the tower from the foot of the house is found to be 60∘60^\circ. Find the height of the tower.

Answer

Let ABAB be the tower of height hh m and CDCD the house of height 25 m, with BDBD the horizontal distance between the foot of the tower and the foot of the house. Let BD=dBD=d.

From the foot of the house DD, the angle of elevation of the top AA is 60∘60^\circ, so

tan⁡60∘=hd ⇒ d=h3\tan 60^\circ=\frac{h}{d}\ \Rightarrow\ d=\frac{h}{\sqrt3}

From the top of the tower, the angle of depression of the roof CC is 45∘45^\circ. The height of the tower above the roof is h−25h-25, so

tan⁡45∘=h−25d ⇒ h−25=d=h3\tan 45^\circ=\frac{h-25}{d}\ \Rightarrow\ h-25=d=\frac{h}{\sqrt3}

h(1−13)=25⇒h=2533−1=253(3+1)2=25(3+3)2h\left(1-\frac{1}{\sqrt3}\right)=25 \Rightarrow h=\frac{25\sqrt3}{\sqrt3-1}=\frac{25\sqrt3(\sqrt3+1)}{2}=\frac{25(3+\sqrt3)}{2}

h≈59.15 mh\approx 59.15\ \text{m}

Hence the height of the tower is about 59.1559.15 m.

Prove that: 1+sin⁡A21+cos⁡A+cos⁡A2=tan⁡A2\dfrac{1+\sin\frac{A}{2}}{1+\cos A+\cos\frac{A}{2}}=\tan\frac{A}{2}

Answer

Note on the question. As printed, the left side is not equal to tan⁡A2\tan\frac A2. For A=60∘A=60^\circ it is 1.52.366≈0.634\dfrac{1.5}{2.366}\approx0.634, while tan⁡30∘≈0.577\tan30^\circ\approx0.577. The standard identity (numerator sin⁡A+sin⁡A2\sin A+\sin\frac A2) is proved below.

To prove: sin⁡A+sin⁡A21+cos⁡A+cos⁡A2=tan⁡A2\dfrac{\sin A+\sin\frac A2}{1+\cos A+\cos\frac A2}=\tan\dfrac A2

Let A2=θ\dfrac A2=\theta, so A=2θA=2\theta.

Find the value of AA when 4cos⁡2A−1=04\cos^2A-1=0 (0∘≤A≤90∘)(0^\circ\le A\le 90^\circ).

Answer

4cos⁡2A−1=04\cos^2A-1=0 cos⁡2A=14\cos^2A=\frac14 cos⁡A=±12\cos A=\pm\frac12

In 0∘≤A≤90∘0^\circ\le A\le90^\circ, cos⁡A≥0\cos A\ge0, so cos⁡A=12=cos⁡60∘\cos A=\dfrac12=\cos60^\circ.

Hence A=60∘A=60^\circ.

Prove that: 2sin⁡A−sin⁡5A+sin⁡3A=16sin⁡3Acos⁡2A2\sin A-\sin 5A+\sin 3A=16\sin^3A\cos^2A

Answer

LHS=2sin⁡A+(sin⁡3A−sin⁡5A)\text{LHS}=2\sin A+(\sin3A-\sin5A)

Using sin⁡C−sin⁡D=2cos⁡C+D2sin⁡C−D2\sin C-\sin D=2\cos\frac{C+D}2\sin\frac{C-D}2:

sin⁡3A−sin⁡5A=2cos⁡4Asin⁡(−A)=−2sin⁡Acos⁡4A\sin3A-\sin5A=2\cos4A\sin(-A)=-2\sin A\cos4A

So

LHS=2sin⁡A−2sin⁡Acos⁡4A=2sin⁡A(1−cos⁡4A)\text{LHS}=2\sin A-2\sin A\cos4A=2\sin A(1-\cos4A)

Since 1−cos⁡4A=2sin⁡22A1-\cos4A=2\sin^22A:

If A+B+C=180∘A+B+C=180^\circ, prove that:
1−2sin⁡A2sin⁡B2sin⁡C2=sin⁡2A2+sin⁡2B2+sin⁡2C21-2\sin\frac{A}{2}\sin\frac{B}{2}\sin\frac{C}{2}=\sin^2\frac{A}{2}+\sin^2\frac{B}{2}+\sin^2\frac{C}{2}

Answer

Given A+B+C=180∘A+B+C=180^\circ, so C2=90∘−A+B2\dfrac C2=90^\circ-\dfrac{A+B}2 and sin⁡C2=cos⁡A+B2\sin\dfrac C2=\cos\dfrac{A+B}2.

Start with the first two terms of the RHS, using sin⁡2θ=1−cos⁡2θ2\sin^2\theta=\dfrac{1-\cos2\theta}2:

sin⁡2A2+sin⁡2B2=1−12(cos⁡A+cos⁡B)=1−cos⁡A+B2cos⁡A−B2=1−sin⁡C2cos⁡A−B2\sin^2\frac A2+\sin^2\frac B2=1-\frac12(\cos A+\cos B)=1-\cos\frac{A+B}2\cos\frac{A-B}2=1-\sin\frac C2\cos\frac{A-B}2

Adding sin⁡2C2\sin^2\dfrac C2:

RHS=1−sin⁡C2[cos⁡A−B2−sin⁡C2]=1−sin⁡C2[cos⁡A−B2−cos⁡A+B2]\text{RHS}=1-\sin\frac C2\left[\cos\frac{A-B}2-\sin\frac C2\right]=1-\sin\frac C2\left[\cos\frac{A-B}2-\cos\frac{A+B}2\right]

Since cos⁡A−B2−cos⁡A+B2=2sin⁡A2sin⁡B2\cos\dfrac{A-B}2-\cos\dfrac{A+B}2=2\sin\dfrac A2\sin\dfrac B2,

RHS=1−2sin⁡A2sin⁡B2sin⁡C2=LHS\text{RHS}=1-2\sin\frac A2\sin\frac B2\sin\frac C2=\text{LHS}

The angle of elevation of an airplane from a point on the ground is 45∘45^\circ. After a flight for 30 seconds, the angle of elevation changes from 45∘45^\circ to 30∘30^\circ. If the airplane is flying at a constant height of 5,500 metres, find the speed of the airplane.

Answer

Let the point on the ground be OO, and let the airplane move from PP to QQ at the constant height 55005500 m. Let MM and NN be the feet of the perpendiculars from PP and QQ on the ground, so PM=QN=5500PM=QN=5500 m.

Since the elevation decreases, the airplane is moving away from OO.

In the right triangle OMPOMP (elevation 45∘45^\circ): OM=PMtan⁡45∘=5500 mOM=\frac{PM}{\tan45^\circ}=5500\text{ m}

In the right triangle ONQONQ (elevation 30∘30^\circ): ON=QNtan⁡30∘=55003 mON=\frac{QN}{\tan30^\circ}=5500\sqrt3\text{ m}

Distance flown: PQ=MN=ON−OM=5500(3−1)=5500(0.732)≈4026 mPQ=MN=ON-OM=5500(\sqrt3-1)=5500(0.732)\approx4026\text{ m}

Speed: PQt=5500(3−1)30=550(3−1)3≈134.2 m/s\frac{PQ}{t}=\frac{5500(\sqrt3-1)}{30}=\frac{550(\sqrt3-1)}{3}\approx134.2\text{ m/s}

Hence the speed of the airplane is about 134.2134.2 m/s (about 483483 km/h).

Prove that: sin⁡20∘sin⁡30∘sin⁡40∘sin⁡80∘=316\sin 20^\circ\sin 30^\circ\sin 40^\circ\sin 80^\circ=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{16}

Answer

LHS=sin⁡30∘⋅sin⁡20∘sin⁡40∘sin⁡80∘=12sin⁡20∘sin⁡40∘sin⁡80∘.\text{LHS}=\sin30^\circ\cdot\sin20^\circ\sin40^\circ\sin80^\circ=\tfrac12\sin20^\circ\sin40^\circ\sin80^\circ.

First, sin⁡40∘sin⁡80∘=12[cos⁡40∘−cos⁡120∘]=12(cos⁡40∘+12)\sin40^\circ\sin80^\circ=\tfrac12\left[\cos40^\circ-\cos120^\circ\right]=\tfrac12\left(\cos40^\circ+\tfrac12\right).

So

sin⁡20∘sin⁡40∘sin⁡80∘=12sin⁡20∘cos⁡40∘+14sin⁡20∘.\sin20^\circ\sin40^\circ\sin80^\circ=\tfrac12\sin20^\circ\cos40^\circ+\tfrac14\sin20^\circ.

Now sin⁡20∘cos⁡40∘=12[sin⁡60∘+sin⁡(−20∘)]=12(sin⁡60∘−sin⁡20∘)\sin20^\circ\cos40^\circ=\tfrac12\left[\sin60^\circ+\sin(-20^\circ)\right]=\tfrac12\left(\sin60^\circ-\sin20^\circ\right), hence

Therefore

The angle of elevation of the top of an incomplete house, as observed from a point on the ground, is 30∘30^\circ. If the height of the incomplete house is 434\sqrt{3} m, how high must the house be raised so that the angle of elevation of the top of the complete house, as observed from the same point on the ground, is 45∘45^\circ?

Answer

Let PP be the point on the ground, BCBC the incomplete house with BC=43BC=4\sqrt3 m, and PB=dPB=d.

In the right triangle PBCPBC with angle of elevation 30∘30^\circ:

tan⁡30∘=43d⇒13=43d⇒d=12 m.\tan30^\circ=\frac{4\sqrt3}{d} \Rightarrow \frac1{\sqrt3}=\frac{4\sqrt3}{d} \Rightarrow d=12\text{ m}.

For the complete house the angle of elevation is 45∘45^\circ from the same point, so its height is

h=dtan⁡45∘=12 m.h=d\tan45^\circ=12\text{ m}.

The house must be raised by

12−43≈12−6.93=5.07 m (exactly 12−43 m).12-4\sqrt3\approx 12-6.93=\boxed{5.07\text{ m}}\ (\text{exactly } 12-4\sqrt3\text{ m}).

What kind of change occurs in the angle of elevation when an observer, while looking at the top of a tall tree standing on a plane surface, moves closer to that tree? Why? (a) As the distance between the observer and the tree decreases, the measure of the angle of elevation decreases. (b) As long as the height of the tree remains unchanged, the measure of the angle of elevation remains the same. (c) As long as the height of the tree remains constant and the distance between the base of the tree and the observer decreases, the measure of the angle of elevation increases. (d) When the height of the tree remains unchanged, the measure of the angle of elevation decreases.

Answer

(c) As long as the height of the tree remains constant and the distance between the base of the tree and the observer decreases, the measure of the angle of elevation increases.

When the observer moves closer, the base distance decreases while the tree height stays the same. Since tan⁡θ=heightbase\tan\theta=\frac{\text{height}}{\text{base}}, a smaller base gives a larger tan⁡θ\tan\theta, so the angle of elevation increases.

Given the identity sin⁡(A+B)=sin⁡Acos⁡B+cos⁡Asin⁡B\sin(A + B) = \sin A\cos B + \cos A\sin B.
(a) How can you convert the given identity in the form of sin⁡2A=2sin⁡Acos⁡A\sin 2A = 2\sin A\cos A? [1]
(b) If sin⁡2A=2sin⁡Acos⁡A\sin 2A = 2\sin A\cos A, show that: sin⁡2A=2tan⁡A1+tan⁡2A\sin 2A = \dfrac{2\tan A}{1 + \tan^2 A}. [1]

Answer

(a) Put B=AB = A in the given identity:

sin⁡(A+A)=sin⁡Acos⁡A+cos⁡Asin⁡A\sin(A+A)=\sin A\cos A+\cos A\sin A ∴sin⁡2A=2sin⁡Acos⁡A\therefore \sin 2A = 2\sin A\cos A

(c) State any one possible reason why the identity cannot be verified for A=90°A = 90°, B=60°B = 60°, C=45°C = 45°. [1]

Answer

(a) 2cos⁡Acos⁡B=cos⁡(A+B)+cos⁡(A−B)2\cos A\cos B=\cos(A+B)+\cos(A-B)

(b) Let A=B=C=60∘A=B=C=60^\circ.

LHS: cos⁡2A+cos⁡2B+cos⁡2C=3cos⁡120∘=3(−12)=−32\cos 2A+\cos 2B+\cos 2C=3\cos120^\circ=3\left(-\frac12\right)=-\frac32

Since LHS == RHS, the identity is verified.

(c) The identity is a conditional identity: it holds only when A+B+C=180∘A+B+C=180^\circ. Here A+B+C=90∘+60∘+45∘=195∘≠180∘A+B+C=90^\circ+60^\circ+45^\circ=195^\circ\ne180^\circ, so the condition is not satisfied and the identity cannot be verified for these values.

A hiker is climbing the hill. The height of the hill (hh) and the horizontal distance (xx) are given in metres by the function h=f(x)=mx+50h = f(x) = mx + 50. The slope of a hill is measured by m=cos⁡θ−cos⁡3θsin⁡3θ−sin⁡θm = \dfrac{\cos\theta - \cos 3\theta}{\sin 3\theta - \sin\theta}.
(a) Prove that: m=tan⁡2θm = \tan 2\theta. [2]
(b) The angle θ\theta of the hill is such that tan⁡θ=13\tan\theta = \frac{1}{3}. Hence, find the value of slope mm. [2]
(c) Using the inverse function f−1(x)f^{-1}(x), find the horizontal distance covered if the hiker is at a height of 150 metres. [2]
(d) Bina claims, "If the angle made by a line with the positive direction of the X-axis doubles, then, the slope (inclination) of that line also doubles". Using tan⁡2θ\tan 2\theta and specific value of θ\theta, verify her claims. [1]

Answer

(a) cos⁡θ−cos⁡3θ=−2sin⁡θ+3θ2sin⁡θ−3θ2=2sin⁡2θsin⁡θ\cos\theta-\cos3\theta=-2\sin\frac{\theta+3\theta}{2}\sin\frac{\theta-3\theta}{2}=2\sin2\theta\sin\theta sin⁡3θ−sin⁡θ=2cos⁡3θ+θ2sin⁡3θ−θ2=2cos⁡2θsin⁡θ\sin3\theta-\sin\theta=2\cos\frac{3\theta+\theta}{2}\sin\frac{3\theta-\theta}{2}=2\cos2\theta\sin\theta ∴ m=2sin⁡2θsin⁡θ2cos⁡2θsin⁡θ=tan⁡2θ\therefore\ m=\frac{2\sin2\theta\sin\theta}{2\cos2\theta\sin\theta}=\tan2\theta Hence proved.

(b) With tan⁡θ=13\tan\theta=\dfrac13, m=tan⁡2θ=2tan⁡θ1−tan⁡2θ=231−19=2389=34m=\tan2\theta=\frac{2\tan\theta}{1-\tan^2\theta}=\frac{\frac23}{1-\frac19}=\frac{\frac23}{\frac89}=\frac34

(c) h=f(x)=34x+50h=f(x)=\dfrac34x+50. Solving for xx: x=43(h−50)x=\dfrac43(h-50), so f−1(x)=43(x−50)f^{-1}(x)=\dfrac43(x-50).

At h=150h=150 m: x=f−1(150)=43(150−50)=4003≈133.33 mx=f^{-1}(150)=\frac43(150-50)=\frac{400}{3}\approx133.33\text{ m}

(d) Bina's claim means tan⁡2θ=2tan⁡θ\tan2\theta=2\tan\theta. Take θ=30∘\theta=30^\circ: tan⁡2θ=tan⁡60∘=3,2tan⁡30∘=23\tan2\theta=\tan60^\circ=\sqrt3,\qquad 2\tan30^\circ=\frac{2}{\sqrt3} Since 3≠23\sqrt3\ne\dfrac{2}{\sqrt3}, the slope does not double when the angle doubles. Bina's claim is false.
