Write a diary entry describing a day of celebration at your home. Write it in about 200 words including the main events, your feelings and experiences.
Answer
Monday, 12 October 2026 9:30 p.m.
Dear Diary,
Today was the happiest day of the year because we celebrated Dashain Tika at home. I woke up early at five and took a bath. My mother had already prepared the sel roti, and the whole house smelt of incense and flowers.
At about ten o'clock, all the relatives from my uncle's and aunt's families arrived. My grandfather sat on the decorated mat in the courtyard and put tika and jamara on everyone's forehead. I touched his feet and received his blessings and some money. He wished us good health and success. I felt very lucky to be loved by so many people.
In the afternoon we ate a delicious feast of rice, mutton curry, lentils and sweets. Later, the children played cards and flew kites on the roof while the elders talked and laughed. In the evening we visited our neighbours and exchanged greetings.
I was a bit sad when the guests left, but I am full of happy memories. The festival taught me the value of family togetherness and respect for elders. I hope that every festival will be as joyful as this one.
Good night, Diary.

Aranceri on foot rush back and forth, to the sides of the square stacked with orange crates, filling their shoulder bags and baggy tops. As soon as a cart approaches, they charge, bombarding it with oranges. Horses halt, for a few minutes: oranges explode, then the cart takes off again, the aranceri chase it for a while, hurling the last of their supplies. They wear no protection, and walk around with their hair caked in orange bits, juice running down their faces. Some have broken noses, some clutch a side of their face, arms or ribs. They hold their heads high, shouting their team's war cries.
Read the above text and put the following sentences in the correct order.
I. The aranceri make a big noise supporting their team.
II. The game is played without wearing any protection hats.
III. The bombarding activity causes horses to stop for some time.
IV. When the aranceri cart comes near, they start throwing oranges.
V. Aranceri standing on the square are loaded with oranges.
Answer
The correct order is V, IV, III, II, I.
V. Aranceri standing on the square are loaded with oranges. IV. When the aranceri cart comes near, they start throwing oranges. III. The bombarding activity causes horses to stop for some time. II. The game is played without wearing any protection hats. I. The aranceri make a big noise supporting their team.
This follows the text: the aranceri fill their bags with oranges, charge at the cart and bombard it, the horses halt, they wear no protection, and they shout their team's war cries at the end.

Chuseok, also called Hangawi, is a Korean festive holiday celebrated on the 15th day of August, according to the lunar calendar. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the fall harvest and to honour one's ancestors. Similar to Thanksgiving Day in the United States, the Harvest Moon Festival, as it is also known, is one of the most popular holidays in Korea. Traditionally, Koreans return to their ancestral hometowns to celebrate with their families. The festival day begins with a ceremony in which food and wine are offered to ancestors. This is followed by a meal that typically consists of fish and newly harvested vegetables and grains. The food most associated with the holiday is songpyon, a crescent-shaped rice cake that is cooked on a bed of pine needles. Later in the day, celebrants visit the graves of relatives, where more ceremonies are performed. Chuseok is also marked by gift giving and athletic events, including tug-of-war competitions, archery contests, and sirrum, Korean wrestling matches. Other activities include dancing and music playing. On this day, many Koreans wear hanbok, the traditional clothing.

People, in our society, tend to spend money beyond the capacity for show off in the name of festivals and celebrations. Write two paragraphs in about 150 words expressing your views on the issue.
Answer
In our society, many people spend more money than they can afford during festivals and celebrations just to show off. They buy expensive clothes, decorate their houses lavishly, arrange grand feasts and give costly gifts so that neighbours and relatives will admire them. Some even take loans for this purpose and fall into debt. In this way the real meaning of a festival, which is to share happiness, respect culture and strengthen relations, is lost.
In my view, we should celebrate festivals simply and within our means. A festival is not measured by how much we spend but by the love and togetherness we share. The money saved can be used for children's education, health care or helping the needy. Parents, teachers and the media should teach young people to value tradition and simplicity instead of show. If we do so, festivals will bring joy to everyone and not stress to families.

Thursday, 27th May
Today school ended for summer vacation. I had a bit dreadful day because I fell out with my friend for a bit but now we are friends, so I am a happy human. Tomorrow it is mum's birthday. I am so excited as we might go out to dinner.
On Saturday, I am playing a football match. On Wednesday next week, perhaps I may go to cinema with Ayesha to watch Street Dance 3D. I have heard it is good. Another day next week, I might go to my cousin's house for sleep over. Another thing, we have got a project work from our Social Studies teacher. We've been told to collect information on historical and cultural sites of our district. So we are going to request our parents to drop us at the stops next weekends. I think we, the whole class are going together. How interesting!

Hi Jan,
So nice to hear from you! How are you doing?
It would be great to meet and celebrate with our friends from college. How about meeting in London sometimes next month? We could meet in a pub, have dinner, and then go to a club, like in the old days?
I think that Saturday 20th would work best for everyone: I know that Ruth is on holiday next weekend, and I will be away the following one (on a business trip to Japan, I will tell you more about it when we meet!). If I remember well, you are busy the weekend of the 27th, as you are attending your sister-in-law's wedding, aren't you? Taking all that into account, Saturday 20th looks like the best option. We would have to ask Sean, Mary and Alex if they are available though.
If you want, I could send an email to everyone, to check that we are all free on Saturday 20th, and suggest that we meet in London. I'll tell them about my idea of going to a pub and then to a club, but maybe someone will come up with a better suggestion (Mary always has great ideas!). Then we can talk about hotel bookings, as most of us will have to stay the night, I guess.
I am really looking forward to it, thanks a lot for suggesting it!
See you soon,
Camille

Answer
Dialogue between two friends, Sita and Rina, about Parents Day
Sita: Hi Rina, our school is celebrating Parents Day next Sunday. Have you prepared your performance?
Rina: Hello Sita. Yes, I am going to sing a song about a mother's love. I have been practising every evening.
Sita: That is lovely. I think our parents will be touched. I am doing a group dance with five classmates.
Rina: Great! Which song have you chosen?
Sita: A Nepali folk song. We have rehearsed for a week, but our steps are still not perfect.
Rina: Don't worry. Practise once more on Friday after school, and I will help you with the timing.
Sita: Thank you, Rina. What will you wear on the stage?
Rina: I will wear a traditional dress. And you?
Sita: We will wear colourful dresses. I hope our parents enjoy the programme.
Rina: I am sure they will. Let's do our best.

Write an email to your uncle describing the recent annual day celebration of your school. Write it in about 200 words including the main events of the day, your participation and feelings.
Answer
To: uncle.raj@example.com From: sabin.thapa@example.com Subject: Our school's annual day celebration
Dear Uncle,
I hope you and aunt are in good health. I am writing to tell you about the annual day celebration of our school, which was held last Friday. I wish you had been there.
The programme began at 10 a.m. when the Chief Guest, the Mayor of our municipality, lit the traditional lamp. The principal then presented the school's yearly report, and the toppers of each class were awarded prizes and certificates. After this, the cultural programme started. There were songs, a comedy skit, a drama on environmental protection, and many dances. The programme ended with a vote of thanks and a lunch for all the guests.
I took part in the group dance with eight classmates. We had practised for almost a month after school. When we performed on the stage, I felt nervous at first, but the loud clapping gave me confidence, and our dance won the second prize. I was so proud when my teacher congratulated us.
Overall, it was a wonderful and memorable day. I felt happy, tired and proud at the same time. Please come to the next one if you are free.
Give my love to aunt and my cousins.
Yours lovingly, Sabin

Jitiya is an important festival of Nepali married women of Mithilanchal and Tharu women of all castes. This festival is named after Masabashi's son Jimutavahana, a blessing son of the Sun. Masabashi was an unmarried princess who spent her life as hermit living in a hermitage.
Jitiya falls in the month of Ashwin (September-October). It is celebrated for three days on Saptami (the seventh day), Astami (the eighth day) and Navami (the ninth day). In this festival, brothers invite their married sisters to their homes, and the married women go to their maiti (maternal home).
On the first day of Jitiya, women take a bath in a river or a pond early in the morning and formally start their brata. Before taking a bath, they put khari (oil-seed-cake), special soil, on a leaf of sponge gourd and worship Jimutavahana, and let it flow on the river. They take the remaining oil back home and massage their children with it. This khari is effused for legendary figures Chilo (eagle) and Shero (fox) wishing them to take brata (fasting) of Jitiya. If you talk about festivals in Nepal you must talk about Teej, a festival celebrated mostly by married Hindu women. On the day of Teej, the women wear beautiful dresses and dazzling ornaments and pray for the health and long life of their husbands. The women who celebrate the festival neither eat nor drink anything, not even a single drop of water, on Teej day. Some of them invite purohitas to perform religious rituals, but most, dressed in their best saris and ornaments, go out into the street to sing and dance. Some also go to their maiti to see their relatives. They share their happiness and sorrow by telling the story of their successful marriage, or using their fate for not being able to make their husbands happy. Their songs reflect their mixed emotions.
Have you ever seen Chandi Naach? If you are lucky, you might see it at Tudikhel, Kathmandu. But if you want to experience its real flavour, you have to go to the eastern hills of Nepal. It's a festival which is celebrated by Rai people on Baishakh Purnima. They celebrate it with the help of their priests who perform rituals to worship their ancestors. Men and women, old and young, everybody participates and enjoys the occasion. First they form a circle by holding each other's hands. With the beating of the drum people start dancing, at a slow pace in the beginning but faster as drum beats more quickly. The festival provides an opportunity for young Rai men and women to meet and get to know each other. Their song and dance reflects their simple life.

Answer
Dialogue between two friends, Ramesh and Hari, about celebrating the New Year
Ramesh: Hello Hari, the New Year is coming soon. Have you made any plan to celebrate it?
Hari: Hi Ramesh. Yes, I am planning to visit my grandparents in the village with my family. What about you?
Ramesh: Some of my friends and I are going to organize a small picnic at Godavari. Would you like to join us?
Hari: I would love to, but I have promised my grandparents. Perhaps I can join you in the evening.
Ramesh: That would be nice. We will cook food, sing songs and play games.
Hari: Great! At home we usually prepare special dishes and visit relatives to exchange good wishes.
Ramesh: I like that. I think the New Year is a time to forget the past problems and begin afresh.
Hari: Exactly. I have also decided to study regularly and stay healthy this year.
Ramesh: That is a wonderful resolution. I will try to read at least one book every month.
Hari: Then let us help each other keep our promises. Happy New Year in advance!
Ramesh: Happy New Year to you and your family!
