Dinesh went to his room. He was scared of his mother when she was in a serious mood. After an hour, she called a taxi and loaded it with her luggage.
"Where are you Kanchhu? Come here. I'm leaving."
Now sooner had he approached than she kissed and squeezed him tightly, put some money in his hand and go onto the taxi. "Grandma! When will you come back? Dinesh shouted as she vanished into the crowded city in the taxi. His question remained unanswered.
He turned to his father Jayaram and, "Daddy, stop her or let me go with her. Why hasn't she taken me? When will she come back? Jayaram held his hand, entered the room and said, she has gone to your uncle's house. How could she take you with her? You should be anxious about your study and exam. I don't know when she'll come back."
Grandma loved him very much. He used to sleep in her lap playing with her gray hair and caressing her wrinkled face. She used to tell wonderful stories at his bed time. She was a good story teller. Read the following text and do the tasks that follow.
On 25 October, 1881, a baby boy was born in Malaga, Spain. It was a difficult birth and to help him breathe cigar smoke was blown into his nose! This baby grew up to one of the twentieth century's greatest painters- PABLO PICASSO.
Picasso showed his genius from a very young age. His first word was Lapiz (Spanish for pencil) and he could draw before he could talk. He was the only son in the family, so he was thoroughly spoiled. He hated school and often refused to go unless he was allowed to take one of his father's pet pigeons with him.
When in 1891 his father got a job in a new school, Pablo went with him to work and watched him paint. Sometimes he was allowed to help. One evening, his father was painting a picture of their pigeons when he had to leave the room. When he returned, Pablo had completed the picture. It was so beautiful and lifelike that he gave his son his palette and brushes and never painted again. Pablo was just thirteen.
His genius as an artist was soon recognized by many people, but others were shocked by his strange and powerful paintings. He is probably best known for his Cubist pictures. His portraits of people were often made up of triangles and squares with their features in the wrong places. One of his most famous portraits was the American writer Gertrude Stein, who he met after he'd moved to Paris in 1904.
His work changed ideas about art around the world, and to millions of people, modern art means the work of Picasso. Guernica, which he painted in 1937, records the bombing of that small Basque town during the Spanish Civil War, and is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of modern painting.

Born in Chicago in 1901 and raised in Missouri, Disney was the fourth son among five siblings. His father, Elias, was a domineering figure who was allegedly abusive. He was unsuccessful to make ends meet for the family. To escape from his stressful circumstances, Young Disney found solace in drawing. Still, he would watch his older brothers, one by one, run off from home to escape their father. When Disney was 16, he dropped out of school to join the Army but was rejected for being underage. Instead, he joined the Red Cross and was sent to France for a year to drive an ambulance. He moved back to the United States in 1919.
When he returned home from war, Disney became an apprentice at a Kansas City commercial art studio. Itching to set off, he and his older brother, Roy, launched their own cartoon business, Laugh-O-Gram Studios, in 1920, but the company went bankrupt a couple of years later. With the loss of his first business, Disney packed his bags, and with just forty dollars to his name, took off to Los Angeles to try his hand at acting. But he failed at that, too. Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist for female education, was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, the largest city in the Swat Valley, Pakistan. She is the daughter of Ziauddin and Tor Pekai Yousafzai and has two younger brothers.
Her father Ziauddin was a teacher and education advocate. He ran a girls' school in the village. Due to his influence, Yousafzai was passionate about knowledge from a very young age. However, by the time she was ten years old, Taliban extremists began to take control of the Swat Valley. Girls were no longer able to attend school and owning a television, playing music. Dancing was all prohibited. Girl's education was specifically targeted by the Taliban and by the end of 2008 they had destroyed over 400 schools. At eleven, Yousafzai decided to stand up for the Taliban. Yousafzai and her family were soon forced to leave their home due to rising tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban.
On 9 October 2012, a Taliban shot Yousafzai as she rode home on a bus after taking an exam in Pakistan's Swat valley. The masked gunman shot at her. She was hit with one bullet, which went through her head, neck and ended on her shoulder. Nine months after being shot by the Taliban, Yousafzai gave a speech at the United Nations on her 16th birthday in 2013 AD. Yousafzzi highlighted her focus on education and women's rights urging world leaders to change their policies. Following the attack, Yousafzai said, "the terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this : weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage were born."
On 10 October 2014, Yoursafzai was announced as the co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for her struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education, having shared the prize with Kailash Satyarthi.

Blessed nature! You gave birth to me to endure the cruel behaviour of human beings and you awoke the meaning of being me. When I was restless with suffering you became my mother and wiped the tears that seeped from my eyes. The mother who bore me also gave birth to me, even though it was to suffer pain, she fostered me for nine or ten months in her womb and gave birth to me. In this neither she nor I was at fault. It was the fault of fate. Is the definition of disability merely to be born with bodily incapacity? If so, why do they not consider Homer incomplete? Why did the world never consider the Nikolai Otrovskys, the Helen Kellers incomplete? These people were weak in body, just like me. But they wrote history before they departed, they left us a different perspective, they set down the meaning of being human before they passed away.
But me? I was born in a world very different from theirs, born in a different geography. For this reason, I lived a life that was so unequal and low grade that may be only an animal could have lived such a life before. When I achieved awareness, the shoots of consciousness had begun to sprout in me, I think. But even achieving awareness became like a curse. I did not have a voice with which to speak, nor any strength in my legs to walk. Nor was there strength in my hands that I could fill a basket with godavari, makhmali and sunakhari flowers. No, I had nothing of this at all. I was a helpless girl bereft of all these things, whose mind was filled with a longing to run on the hills, but whose feet did not have the strength to support her body. I longed to talk with others, but I had no voice! Because these desires were ones that would never be fulfilled, they fell upon me, wounded.
A. Write TRUE for true and FALSE for false statements. (5×1=5)
a. The writer is happy with people's behavior towards her.
b. The writer thinks fate is responsible for her condition.
c. Like the writer, Homer and Helen Keller also had bodily weakness.
d. The writer lived a low grade life like an animal.
e. The writer used to talk for a long time with others.
B. Answer these questions. (5×1=5)
a. Who is the 'mother' that comforted the writer?
b. Why could the writer NOT live a life like Nikolai Otrovskys?
c. What would the writer do if her hands had strength?
d. What was the problem with the writer's feet?
e. Is the writer really helpless? Give a reason from the text.

Hi, Carla!
While talking to Dad about our family history, I've found interesting things about his brother, our Uncle Jack.
Jack left school at 16 in 1848 and worked in a car factory in Newcastle for five years. He used to play football for the factory team there. One day, some men came to watch him from Newcastle United. They offered him a contract, so in 1953, Jack left for his new team apparently, he played for Newcastle United from 1953 until 1959 and scored over 100 goals. However, he broke his leg badly in 1959 and gave up playing football.
After that, he got a job as a sports teacher at a local school, and that's where he met his wife, Auntie Giulia. She was an art teacher. They fell in love and got married in 1961. As you know, we left Great Britain and came to live here in Australia in 1965, so it was quite difficult for Dad and Uncle Jack to keep in touch after that.
Meanwhile, in 1969, Uncle Jack and Auntie Giulia opened an Italian restaurant in the centre of Newcastle. It was the most popular restaurant in the city during the 1970s and 80s. Sadly, in 1992, Uncle Jack was killed in a car crash, and the restaurant had to be sold. If I find anything new, I will certainly share with you.
Hope to see you soon!

Past and Present
I remember, I remember
The house where I was born,
The little window where the sun
Came peeping in at morn;
He never came a wink too soon
Nor brought too long a day;
But now, I often wish the night
Had borne my breath away.
I remember, I remember
The roses, red and white,
The violets, and the lily-cups,
Those flowers made of light!
The lilacs where the robin built,
And where my brother set
The laburnum on his birthday,
The tree is living yet!
I remember, I remember
Where I was used to swing,
And thought the air must rush as fresh
To swallows on the wing;
My spirit flew in feathers then
That is so heavy now,
And summer pools could hardly cool
The fever on my brow.

I come from a very humble background. My father passed away when I was five years old. I started to work when I was around 9 - 10, engaging in petty trade. After I failed S.L.C., I followed what others in my village did go to India.
I used to wash the skewer of a chef who worked in the tandoor section. I told him that I wanted to be a chef as well, and wanted to help him. He advised me to talk to the Executive Chef. One day, when I was serving tea to the Executive Chef, I requested him to give me a shot, and he did, I started helping the chef in the tandoor section who had originally recommended me.
From there I transferred to another hotel. I started taking a hotel management course, learnt English and computers on the side. Within seven years of hard work, I became an executive chef.
