Janakpur Bolts Thump Sudurpaschim to Clinch Inaugural Nepal Premier League Title
By MyKhel Staff, December 21
Janakpur Bolts clinched the first ever Nepal Premier League after a thumping 5-wicket win over Sudurpaschim Royals in the final at the TU International Stadium in Kirtipur on Saturday.
Lahiru Milantha smashed a 49-ball 87 as Janakpur Bolts made light work of the run chase of 185 against Sudurpaschim Royals. Milantha and skipper Aasif Sheikh (33 off 19 balls) shared a 73 - run stand for the first wicket in seven overs to lay the foundation for a smooth run chase. After the two openers departed and the wickets fell at the other end, Harsh Thaker (30* off 24 balls) remained unbeaten alongside Mayan Yadav (2* off 3 balls) to see the team home with four balls to spare. For Royals, Scott Kuggeleijn, Saif Zaib and Ishan Pandey claimed a wicket each in a losing cause.
Earlier opting to bat first, Sudurpaschim Royals got off to a great start as openers Saif Zaib (69 off 43 balls) and Binod Bhandari (41 off 31 balls) added 117 runs from 72 balls for the first wicket before Lalit Rajbanshi broke the stand, leading to successive dismissals in the space of 3 deliveries.
Destined for a total above 200, Janakpur Bolts struck in regular intervals through Mohammed Mohsin (3 for 40) and Kishor Mahato (3 for 25) to keep the Royals down to 184/9 in their allotted 20 overs. With this, Janakpur Bolts defeated the Sudurpaschim for the first time, having lost to the table-toppers twice earlier in the tournament. The final marked the close of the first edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL).

When there is a grey area, it is the referee or umpire's job to decide whether cheating is taking place. However, players can take advantage of this situation because referees aren't perfect and can't see everything. For example, in cricket, if the ball hits a batter's legs, he is out, and most batters know when they are out, they should leave the field immediately. However, few cricketers are sporting. They wait until the umpire tells them to go because they want to stay in the game, and the umpire might not see what happened. This isn't considered cheating.
However, there's no denying that Diego Maradona cheated in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals between England and Argentina. In that particular match, Maradona infamously scored a goal using his hand. The referee, who missed the incident, awarded the goal, and unsurprisingly, Maradona didn't question the decision. But the game of football, however, isn't always so forgiving of those who bend the rules, as Brazilian player Rivaldo knows. In the 2002 World Cup, he faked an injury during a match. Unlike Maradona, Rivaldo wasn't so lucky; he was caught out and was later fined, proving that the outcomes of such actions are not always in the player's favour.
Sometimes, players might even try to lose on purpose. At the 2012 London Olympics, four women's badminton doubles teams from China, Indonesia and South Korea purposely played badly. They all wanted to lose because it would lead to an easier place in the tournament.
Although none of the players broke any badminton rules, they were all disqualified for their poor sportsmanship.
Where there are games, people will always try different ways to win. But is bending the rules the same as cheating? Or does it just make the game more interesting because sports competitions are not only about physical skills but also about clever strategies?

Answer

Kathmandu

20 March, 2025

Dear Binod,

I hope you are fine and enjoying your studies. I am writing to tell you about the Sports Week that our school organized last week. It was one of the most enjoyable weeks of the year.

The week began with an opening ceremony on Sunday, when the Mayor of our municipality was the chief guest. He inaugurated the programme by releasing balloons. The main events were football, volleyball, cricket, running races, long jump, tug of war and a chess competition for indoor lovers. Almost every student took part in at least one event, and the four houses competed with great spirit. Parents, teachers and local people also came to cheer for us.

I took part in the 200 metres race and the tug of war. Although I won only a silver medal in the race, I enjoyed it a lot. Our house won the tug of war, and we celebrated happily. The experience taught me teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship. On the last day, the winners received trophies and certificates, and the principal advised us to continue sports along with study.

I wish you had been here. Please write to me soon and tell me about your school.

Yours sincerely,

Sunil

Nowadays many young people are found increasingly involved in various video games in their mobile phones. Write a paragraph in around 150 words expressing your views about the mental and social impacts of excessively playing such games.

Answer

Impacts of Excessive Video Games

Nowadays many young people spend hours playing video games on their mobile phones. A little gaming can refresh the mind, but too much of it harms both mental and social health. Mentally, players can become addicted, lose concentration in study and feel anxious, restless or angry when they lose. Lack of sleep and sitting for long also cause headaches and eye problems, and violent games may make children aggressive.

Socially, gamers spend less time with family and friends. They stop playing outdoor games, avoid conversation and become lonely and shy in real life. Their academic results often fall, which disappoints parents and teachers. In my view, games should be played only for a limited time, after finishing study, and we should give more time to sports, reading and social activities. Parents should also guide children and monitor their screen time.
