The heights of a house and a temple are 13 m and 25 m respectively. If a man observes the roof of the house from the roof of the temple and finds the angle of depression 45∘45^\circ, find the distance between the house and the temple.

Similar questions: Distance between a 10 m house and a 20 m temple, angle 45 (2075 Chaitra · Set EP) · Distance between a 10 m house and a 30 m temple, angle 60 (2075 Chaitra · Set FP) · Distance between a house and a temple from the angle of depression (2075 Chaitra · Set BP)

Answer

Let the temple be ABAB (2525 m) and the house be CDCD (1313 m), with the man at AA on top of the temple, looking at the house roof CC.

Draw CE⊥ABCE\perp AB with EE on ABAB. Then

AE=25−13=12 m,∠ACE=angle of depression=45∘AE=25-13=12\text{ m},\qquad \angle ACE=\text{angle of depression}=45^\circ

(alternate angles with the horizontal through AA).

In right-angled △AEC\triangle AEC:

tan⁡45∘=AECE⇒1=12CE⇒CE=12 m.\tan45^\circ=\frac{AE}{CE} \Rightarrow 1=\frac{12}{CE} \Rightarrow CE=12\text{ m}.

The distance between the house and the temple is BD=CE=BD=CE= 12 m.

Answer

Let the horizontal distance between the house and the temple be dd m.

The vertical drop from the temple roof to the house roof is 20−10=1020 - 10 = 10 m.

The angle of depression is 45∘45^\circ, so the angle of elevation from the house roof is also 45∘45^\circ:

tan⁡45∘=10d⇒1=10d⇒d=10\tan 45^\circ = \frac{10}{d} \Rightarrow 1 = \frac{10}{d} \Rightarrow d = 10

The distance between the house and the temple is 10 m.

The heights of a house and a temple are 10 metre and 30 metre respectively. If a man observes the roof of the house from the roof of the temple and finds the angle of depression to be 60∘60^\circ, find the distance between the house and the temple.

Answer

Let the distance between the house and the temple be dd m.

The man is on the roof of the temple (30 m), so the roof of the house (10 m) is 30−10=2030 - 10 = 20 m below his eye level.

The angle of depression equals the angle of elevation from the house roof to the man, so in the right-angled triangle

tan⁡60∘=20d⇒3=20d⇒d=203=2033≈11.55 m\tan 60^\circ = \frac{20}{d} \Rightarrow \sqrt{3} = \frac{20}{d} \Rightarrow d = \frac{20}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{20\sqrt{3}}{3} \approx 11.55 \text{ m}

Answer: the distance between the house and the temple is 2033≈11.55\dfrac{20\sqrt3}{3} \approx 11.55 m

The heights of a house and a temple are 10 metre and 22 metre respectively. If a man observes the roof of the house from the roof of the temple and gets the angle of depression to be 30∘30^\circ, find the distance between the house and the temple.

Answer

Let the man be at the temple roof AA (height 22 m) and the house roof BB (height 10 m). Drop the horizontal from AA to the house wall at CC.

Vertical difference AC=22−10=12AC = 22 - 10 = 12 m. The angle of depression is 30∘30^\circ, so ∠CBA=30∘\angle CBA = 30^\circ (alternate angle), and BCBC is the required distance dd.

tan⁡30∘=ACBC⇒13=12d⇒d=123≈20.78 m\tan 30^\circ = \frac{AC}{BC} \Rightarrow \frac{1}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{12}{d} \Rightarrow d = 12\sqrt{3} \approx 20.78 \text{ m}

The distance between the house and the temple is about 20.78 m.

The heights of a temple and a tree are 15 m and 5 m respectively. If a man observes the top of the tree from the roof of the temple and finds the angle of depression to be 60∘60^\circ, find the distance between the temple and the tree.

Similar questions: Distance between a house and a temple, angle of depression 45 (2075 Chaitra · Set CP) · Distance between a 10 m house and a 20 m temple, angle 45 (2075 Chaitra · Set EP) · Distance between a 10 m house and a 30 m temple, angle 60 (2075 Chaitra · Set FP)

Answer

Let the temple be AB=15AB = 15 m and the tree CD=5CD = 5 m, the man being at the top AA of the temple. Drawing a horizontal from AA to meet the vertical through the tree-top, the vertical drop is

15−5=10 m.15 - 5 = 10 \text{ m}.

Let the distance between the temple and the tree be dd m. The angle of depression equals the angle of elevation from the tree-top to AA, so

tan⁡60∘=10d⇒3=10d⇒d=103=1033≈5.77 m.\tan 60^\circ = \frac{10}{d} \Rightarrow \sqrt{3} = \frac{10}{d} \Rightarrow d = \frac{10}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{10\sqrt{3}}{3} \approx 5.77 \text{ m}.

The distance between the temple and the tree is 1033\dfrac{10\sqrt{3}}{3} m ≈5.77\approx 5.77 m.

Similar questions: Height of a tree from a 60 ft house (2075 Chaitra · Set DP)

Answer

Let the house be AB=30AB = 30 ft, the tree be CDCD, and BD=103BD = 10\sqrt{3} ft the distance between them. Draw AEAE parallel to BDBD (horizontal) to meet CDCD at EE, so AE=BD=103AE = BD = 10\sqrt{3} ft and ∠EAC=30∘\angle EAC = 30^\circ (angle of depression).

In right-angled △AEC\triangle AEC (with CC the top of the tree):

In the given figure, height of the tower AB is 21.5 meter and the height of a house CD is 1.5 meter. BD denotes the distance between tower and house.
  • (a) Define the angle of depression. (1)
  • (b) Find the value of AE. (1)
  • (c) If ∠\angleFAC = 30∘30^\circ, find the distance between tower and house. (1)
  • (d) By how many degrees is the angle of depression less or more when AE and EC are equal? Compare it. (1)
Figure: Vertical tower AB (A at top, B at the base) and a house CD with D on the ground at the same level as B. Horizontal line AF is drawn from A; E is on AB at the height of C (so EC is horizontal, parallel to BD, with right angles at E, B and D). AC is joined; angle FAC is the angle of depression.

Answer

Angle of depression: the angle formed below the horizontal line of sight when an observer at a higher level looks down at an object at a lower level.

(b) AE=AB−EB=AB−CD=21.5−1.5=20AE = AB - EB = AB - CD = 21.5 - 1.5 = 20 m (since EB=CDEB = CD).

(c) ∠FAC=30∘\angle FAC = 30^\circ, so ∠ACE=30∘\angle ACE = 30^\circ (alternate angles, AF∥ECAF \parallel EC).

tan⁡30∘=AEEC  ⇒  13=20EC  ⇒  EC=203≈34.64 m\tan 30^\circ = \frac{AE}{EC}\;\Rightarrow\;\frac{1}{\sqrt3}=\frac{20}{EC}\;\Rightarrow\; EC = 20\sqrt3\approx 34.64\text{ m}

Distance between tower and house BD=EC≈34.64BD = EC \approx 34.64 m.

(d) If AE=ECAE = EC, then tan⁡θ=AEEC=1\tan\theta = \dfrac{AE}{EC}=1, so θ=45∘\theta = 45^\circ.

Comparison: 45∘−30∘=15∘45^\circ - 30^\circ = 15^\circ. The angle of depression would be 15∘15^\circ more than 30∘30^\circ.

  • (c) Find the height of the flying kite. (1)
  • (d) If the measure of ∠AEC\angle AEC be changed from 60∘60^\circ to 45∘45^\circ, how many meters below than the previous height would the kite fly? Find it. (1)
Figure: Right-angled figure: kite at A, string AE = 140 m (printed '14 0'), angle AEC = 60 degrees at E, EC horizontal, AB vertical through C to the ground at B; boy DE vertical of height 1.2 m, D on the ground line DB, right angles at C and B.

Answer

Angle of elevation: the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer at a lower level looks up at an object at a higher level.

(b) In right triangle AECAEC: sin⁡60∘=ACAE\sin 60^\circ = \dfrac{AC}{AE}

AC=140sin⁡60∘=140×32=703≈121.24 mAC = 140\sin60^\circ = 140\times\frac{\sqrt3}{2}=70\sqrt3\approx 121.24\text{ m}

(c) Height of the kite from the ground =AC+CB=AC+DE=121.24+1.2=122.44= AC + CB = AC + DE = 121.24 + 1.2 = 122.44 m.

(d) For ∠AEC=45∘\angle AEC = 45^\circ:

AC′=140sin⁡45∘=140×12=702≈98.99 mAC' = 140\sin45^\circ = 140\times\frac{1}{\sqrt2}=70\sqrt2\approx 98.99\text{ m}

Fall in height =121.24−98.99=22.25= 121.24 - 98.99 = 22.25 m.

The kite would fly about 22.25 m lower than before.

  • (c) Find the length of the broken part of the tree. (1)
  • (d) If the length of the remaining part of the tree after broken is also 939\sqrt{3} meter, what angle will the top of the tree make with the ground? Write reason. (1)

Answer

Angle of elevation: the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer at a lower level looks up at an object at a higher level.

(b) Figure (AB is the standing part, BC the ground distance, AC the broken part resting on the ground):

        A
        |\
        | \   broken part AC
        |  \
        |   \
   AB   |    \
        |     \
        B------C
          9√3 m     ∠ACB = 30° at C

(c) Let BB be the foot, AA the break point and CC the point where the top touches the ground; BC=93BC = 9\sqrt3 m and ∠ACB=30∘\angle ACB=30^\circ. The broken part is ACAC.

cos⁡30∘=BCAC  ⇒  32=93AC  ⇒  AC=18 m\cos30^\circ=\frac{BC}{AC}\;\Rightarrow\;\frac{\sqrt3}{2}=\frac{9\sqrt3}{AC}\;\Rightarrow\; AC = 18\text{ m}

The broken part is 18 m long.

(d) If the remaining part AB=93AB = 9\sqrt3 m, then AB=BCAB = BC, so triangle ABCABC is an isosceles right triangle.

tan⁡θ=ABBC=9393=1  ⇒  θ=45∘\tan\theta=\frac{AB}{BC}=\frac{9\sqrt3}{9\sqrt3}=1\;\Rightarrow\;\theta=45^\circ

When a tree is broken by the wind from somewhere without detaching and its top touches the ground making an angle of 60∘60^\circ with the ground. The length of broken part of the tree is 20 meter.
  • (a) Define the angle of elevation. (1)
  • (b) What is the distance between top and bottom of the tree after broken? Find it. (1)
  • (c) What was the height of the tree before it was broken? Find it. (1)
  • (d) If the distance between the top and the bottom of the tree was equal to the remaining part of the tree when broken, how many degrees of angle would it make with the ground? Write with suitable argument. (1)

Answer

Angle of elevation: the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer at a lower level looks up at an object at a higher level.

(b) Let AC=20AC=20 m be the broken part, BB the foot, ∠ACB=60∘\angle ACB=60^\circ. Distance between top and bottom after breaking =BC=BC:

cos⁡60∘=BCAC  ⇒  BC=20×12=10 m\cos60^\circ=\frac{BC}{AC}\;\Rightarrow\;BC=20\times\frac12=10\text{ m}

(c) Remaining standing part:

AB=ACsin⁡60∘=20×32=103≈17.32 mAB = AC\sin60^\circ = 20\times\frac{\sqrt3}{2}=10\sqrt3\approx17.32\text{ m}

Original height =AB+AC=103+20≈37.32= AB + AC = 10\sqrt3+20\approx 37.32 m.

(d) If BC=ABBC = AB, then in right triangle ABCABC:

tan⁡θ=ABBC=1  ⇒  θ=45∘\tan\theta=\frac{AB}{BC}=1\;\Rightarrow\;\theta=45^\circ

The top would make 45∘45^\circ with the ground, since the two legs of the right triangle are equal (isosceles right triangle).

  • (a) What is the angle called made by the line of sight with the horizon when an object of the upper level is observed from the lower level? Write it. (1)
  • (b) Find the radius of the ground. (1)
  • (c) Find the angle formed by the rope with the ground. (1)
  • (d) Additional 5 ft for each rope is required to tight it with proper knot. Is a rope of 45 feet length sufficient? Give logic. (1)

Answer

Angle of elevation: the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer at a lower level looks up at an object at a higher level.

(b) Circumference =2πr=88=2\pi r = 88:

r=88×72×22=14 ftr=\frac{88\times7}{2\times22}=14\text{ ft}

(c) The pole is at the centre, so the horizontal distance is r=14r=14 ft and the pole height is 14 ft.

tan⁡θ=1414=1  ⇒  θ=45∘\tan\theta=\frac{14}{14}=1\;\Rightarrow\;\theta=45^\circ

The rope makes 45∘45^\circ with the ground.

(d) Length of each rope (hypotenuse):

ℓ=142+142=142≈19.8 ft\ell=\sqrt{14^2+14^2}=14\sqrt2\approx19.8\text{ ft}

With 5 ft extra for the knot, each rope needs 19.8+5=24.819.8+5=24.8 ft.

Since 24.8 ft<45 ft24.8\text{ ft} < 45\text{ ft}, a rope of 45 ft is sufficient for each rope. (If both ropes were to be cut from one 45 ft piece, they would need 2×24.8=49.62\times24.8=49.6 ft, which is more than 45 ft, so it would not be enough.)

  • (c) Find the height of the tower. (1)
  • (d) If the man looks at the top of the tower and to form the angle 45∘45^\circ, how many meters should he move towards the tower? Find it. (1)

Answer

(a) It is an angle of elevation, because the man looks upward from a lower level to the top of the tower.

(b) Figure (E is the man's eye, AB the tower, EC horizontal):

            A

   M ─────── B
    30√3 m

Man MD = 1.68 m, so tower = h + 1.68 m.

(c) Horizontal distance =303=30\sqrt3 m. Height of tower above the man's eye:

tan⁡30∘=h303  ⇒  h=303×13=30 m\tan30^\circ=\frac{h}{30\sqrt3}\;\Rightarrow\;h=30\sqrt3\times\frac1{\sqrt3}=30\text{ m}

Height of tower =30+1.68=31.68=30+1.68=31.68 m.

(d) For 45∘45^\circ, the distance dd satisfies tan⁡45∘=30d\tan45^\circ=\dfrac{30}{d}, so d=30d=30 m.

Distance to move =303−30=30(3−1)≈21.96=30\sqrt3-30=30(\sqrt3-1)\approx21.96 m.

The man should move about 21.96 m towards the tower.

Distance of P below the top =AE−PE=25−14.43=10.57=AE-PE=25-14.43=10.57 ft.

The point viewed is about 10.57 ft below the top of the tower.

  • (a) What type of angle is formed when the top of the tower is observed from the roof of the house? Write it. (1)
  • (b) Find the height of part DE of the tower. (1)
  • (c) Calculate the distance between house and tower. (1)
  • (d) Find the angle of the top of the tower from the basement of the house. (1)
Figure: House AB (A at bottom-left, B at top) and tower CD (C at bottom, D at top) on level ground AC. BE is horizontal from B to the tower at E with a right angle at E. Angle DBE = 30 degrees. AB = 10 root 3 m, CD = 15 root 3 m, DE is the part of the tower above E.

Answer

(a) An angle of elevation is formed (looking upward from the roof BB to the tower top DD).

(b) DE=CD−CE=CD−AB=153−103=53≈8.66DE = CD - CE = CD - AB = 15\sqrt3-10\sqrt3=5\sqrt3\approx8.66 m.

(c) In right triangle BEDBED:

tan⁡30∘=DEBE  ⇒  13=53BE  ⇒  BE=15 m\tan30^\circ=\frac{DE}{BE}\;\Rightarrow\;\frac1{\sqrt3}=\frac{5\sqrt3}{BE}\;\Rightarrow\;BE=15\text{ m}

Distance between house and tower =AC=BE=15=AC=BE=15 m.

(d) From the base AA of the house to the top DD of the tower: horizontal distance AC=15AC=15 m, height CD=153CD=15\sqrt3 m.

tan⁡θ=15315=3  ⇒  θ=60∘\tan\theta=\frac{15\sqrt3}{15}=\sqrt3\;\Rightarrow\;\theta=60^\circ

The angle of elevation is 60∘60^\circ.

A man is sitting on the roof of a house. From the roof of the house, he finds the angle of depression of the top of a pole to be 30∘30^\circ. The house and pole are respectively 25 ft and 9 ft high.
  • (a) Sketch the diagram as per the given data. (1)
  • (b) How much is the height of house more than the height of the pole? Write it. (1)
  • (c) Find the distance between house and pole. (1)
  • (d) If he observed from the top of the tower 32 ft high tower situated at the roof of the house, what would be the angle of depression? Find it. (1)

Answer

(a) Diagram:

 A ───────────────── horizontal line at roof level
 |  \ 30°
 |    \  line of sight
 E ───── C   (pole top, 9 ft)
 |        |  pole CD = 9 ft
 B ───────D   (ground)

House AB = 25 ft, pole CD = 9 ft, angle of depression of the pole top C from A is 30∘30^\circ.

(b) House is higher than the pole by 25−9=1625-9=16 ft.

(c) Draw a horizontal line from the pole top to the house at E; AE=16AE=16 ft and the angle at C is 30∘30^\circ (alternate angle).

tan⁡30∘=AEEC  ⇒  13=16d  ⇒  d=163≈27.71 ft\tan30^\circ=\frac{AE}{EC}\;\Rightarrow\;\frac1{\sqrt3}=\frac{16}{d}\;\Rightarrow\;d=16\sqrt3\approx27.71\text{ ft}

Distance between house and pole =163≈27.71=16\sqrt3\approx27.71 ft.

(d) Height of the new observation point =25+32=57=25+32=57 ft. Vertical drop to the pole top =57−9=48=57-9=48 ft; horizontal distance =163=16\sqrt3 ft.

tan⁡θ=48163=3  ⇒  θ=60∘\tan\theta=\frac{48}{16\sqrt3}=\sqrt3\;\Rightarrow\;\theta=60^\circ

The angle of depression would be 60∘60^\circ.

In the given figure, from the top of a tower (AB) 30 meter high, the angle of depression (∠\angleHAC) of the roof of a house (CD) is 30∘^\circ. The distance between tower and house (BD) = 10310\sqrt{3} meter.
  • (a) Write the definition of the angle of elevation.
  • (b) What is the angle of elevation of the top of the tower from the roof of the house? Write it.
  • (c) Find the height of the house.
  • (d) What is the value of ∠\angleCAH when AE = EC? Give reason.
Figure: Vertical tower AB of height 30 m with A at the top and B at the base; house CD to the right with BD = 10 root 3 m along the ground; horizontal line AH drawn from A, line AC from A to the roof corner C making angle HAC = 30 degrees with AH; E is the point on AB level with C, with CE horizontal and right angle at E.

Answer

Angle of elevation: the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer at a lower level looks up at an object at a higher level.

(b) The angle of elevation of the top of the tower from the roof of the house equals the angle of depression (alternate angles): 30∘30^\circ.

(c) EC=BD=103EC=BD=10\sqrt3 m and ∠ACE=30∘\angle ACE=30^\circ:

tan⁡30∘=AEEC  ⇒  AE=103×13=10 m\tan30^\circ=\frac{AE}{EC}\;\Rightarrow\;AE=10\sqrt3\times\frac1{\sqrt3}=10\text{ m}

Height of house CD=EB=AB−AE=30−10=20CD=EB=AB-AE=30-10=20 m.

(d) If AE=ECAE=EC, triangle AECAEC is right-angled and isosceles, so ∠ACE=45∘\angle ACE=45^\circ. Since AH∥ECAH\parallel EC, ∠CAH=∠ACE=45∘\angle CAH=\angle ACE=45^\circ (alternate angles).

∠CAH=\angle CAH= 45∘45^\circ.

The height of Himali is 1.22 m. She observed the top of the school building standing 36 m far from the base of school building found the angle of 30∘30^\circ.
  • (a) What is the name of the angle found when Himali observed at the top of school building according to the given context? Write it. (1)
  • (b) Sketch the figure from the above context. (1)
  • (c) Find the height of the school building. (1)
  • (d) How many meter should Himali have to walk nearer or farther from that place to make the angle of the top of the building to be 60∘60^\circ? Give reason. (1)

Answer

(a) It is the angle of elevation (the observer looks up from a lower level to the building top).

(b) Figure (E is Himali's eye, AB the building):

            A
           /|
          / |
         /  |  h
        /   |
   E ─30°─── C
   |         |
   H ─────── B
      36 m

HE = 1.22 m.

(c) Height above her eye level:

tan⁡30∘=h36  ⇒  h=363=123≈20.78 m\tan30^\circ=\frac{h}{36}\;\Rightarrow\;h=\frac{36}{\sqrt3}=12\sqrt3\approx20.78\text{ m}

Height of the building =20.78+1.22=22=20.78+1.22=22 m (approx.).

(d) For 60∘60^\circ: distance dd with tan⁡60∘=123d\tan60^\circ=\dfrac{12\sqrt3}{d}, so d=1233=12d=\dfrac{12\sqrt3}{\sqrt3}=12 m.

Distance to walk =36−12=24=36-12=24 m.

She should walk 24 m nearer to the building, because a larger angle of elevation needs a shorter horizontal distance.

  • (d) Is the angle of depression of 30∘30^\circ formed when the roof of the house is observed from a point 28 meter below the top of the tower? Give reason. (1)
Figure: House PQ on the left (P roof, Q ground) with PQ = 30 m; tower RS on the right (R top, S ground) with total height RS = 72 m; PT is drawn horizontal from P to T on the tower, so TR is the part above the roof level; the angle of elevation RPT at P is 60 degrees; QS is the horizontal ground distance.

Answer

(a) The angle ∠RPT\angle RPT is the angle of elevation of the tower top R from the roof P.

(b) TR=RS−TS=RS−PQ=72−30=42TR=RS-TS=RS-PQ=72-30=42 m.

(c) In right triangle PTRPTR:

tan⁡60∘=TRPT  ⇒  3=42PT  ⇒  PT=423=143≈24.25 m\tan60^\circ=\frac{TR}{PT}\;\Rightarrow\;\sqrt3=\frac{42}{PT}\;\Rightarrow\;PT=\frac{42}{\sqrt3}=14\sqrt3\approx24.25\text{ m}

Distance between house and tower QS=PT≈24.25QS=PT\approx24.25 m.

(d) The point is 28 m below the top, so its height is 72−28=4472-28=44 m. Its height above the roof level =44−30=14=44-30=14 m, with horizontal distance 14314\sqrt3 m.

tan⁡θ=14143=13  ⇒  θ=30∘\tan\theta=\frac{14}{14\sqrt3}=\frac1{\sqrt3}\;\Rightarrow\;\theta=30^\circ

Yes, the angle of depression of the roof from that point is 30∘30^\circ, because tan⁡θ=13\tan\theta=\dfrac1{\sqrt3}.

  • (c) What was the height of the tree before broken? Find it. (1)
  • (d) At what height should the tree be broken so that its top makes an angle of 45∘45^\circ with ground? Find it. (1)

Answer

Angle of elevation: the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer at a lower level looks up at an object at a higher level.

(b) Tree height =x=x m, broken at 6 m. The standing part is 6 m, so the broken part is

x−6 mx-6\text{ m}

(c) In the right triangle formed (standing part 6 m, broken part as hypotenuse, angle 30∘30^\circ at the ground):

The tree was 18 m high before breaking.

(d) Let the tree break at height hh. The broken part is 18−h18-h and makes 45∘45^\circ with the ground:

sin⁡45∘=h18−h  ⇒  18−h=h2  ⇒  h=181+2=18(2−1)≈7.46 m\sin45^\circ=\frac{h}{18-h}\;\Rightarrow\;18-h=h\sqrt2\;\Rightarrow\;h=\frac{18}{1+\sqrt2}=18(\sqrt2-1)\approx7.46\text{ m}

  • (d) By how much should the height of the pole above the water surface be reduced so that the angle of elevation becomes 30∘30^\circ? Give the logic with calculation. (1)

Answer

Angle of elevation: the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer at a lower level looks up at an object at a higher level.

(b) Figure (P is the pole top, O the centre of the pond, M the man at the edge, ME is his height):

          P

(c) Horizontal distance == radius =21=21 m. Height of the pole above the man's eye:

tan⁡45∘=h21  ⇒  h=21 m\tan45^\circ=\frac{h}{21}\;\Rightarrow\;h=21\text{ m}

Height of pole above water level =21+1.4=22.4=21+1.4=22.4 m.

(d) For 30∘30^\circ:

h′=21tan⁡30∘=213=73≈12.12 mh'=21\tan30^\circ=\frac{21}{\sqrt3}=7\sqrt3\approx12.12\text{ m}

New height above water =12.12+1.4=13.52=12.12+1.4=13.52 m.

Reduction =22.4−13.52=8.88=22.4-13.52=8.88 m (that is, 21−7321-7\sqrt3).

The pole must be reduced by about 8.88 m, since a smaller angle of elevation needs a smaller pole at the same distance.

A boy of height 1.2 m found the angle of elevation 60∘60^\circ at the top of a tower of the height 53.2 m.
  • (a) Define angle of elevation. (1)
  • (b) Draw a figure according to the given context. (1)
  • (c) Find the distance between boy and tower. (1)
  • (d) If the angle of elevation is 45∘45^\circ, what would be the difference between the previous distance and current distance of the boy and tower? Compare it. (1)

Answer

Angle of elevation: the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer at a lower level looks up at an object at a higher level.

(b) Figure (E is the boy's eye, AB the tower):

            A
           /|
          / |
         /  |  h
        /   |
   E ─60°── C
   |        |
   G ────── B
      d

GE =1.2=1.2 m.

(c) Height of the tower above the boy's eye h=53.2−1.2=52h=53.2-1.2=52 m.

tan⁡60∘=52d  ⇒  d=523≈30.02 m\tan60^\circ=\frac{52}{d}\;\Rightarrow\;d=\frac{52}{\sqrt3}\approx30.02\text{ m}

(d) At 45∘45^\circ: d′=52tan⁡45∘=52d'=\dfrac{52}{\tan45^\circ}=52 m.

Difference =52−30.02=21.98=52-30.02=21.98 m.

At 45∘45^\circ the boy is about 21.98 m farther from the tower than at 60∘60^\circ (a smaller angle needs a larger distance).

In the figure along side, from the top of the 45 meter high view tower (AB) an angle of 60∘60^\circ is formed when looking at the roof of a house at a distance of 15 meter to the east of the tower.
  • (a) What is the angle formed when observed from the roof of the house to the top of the view tower? Write it. (1)
  • (b) What is the height of the part AE of the tower? Find it. (1)
  • (c) What is the height of the house? Find it. (1)
  • (d) What distance does the observer have to come down from the top of the view tower to observe the roof of the house such that the angle of depression is 45∘45^\circ? Find it. (1)
Figure: Vertical tower AB of height 45 m with A at the top and B at the foot; house CD stands 15 m east of the tower (BD = 15 m), with C at the roof and D on the ground. A horizontal line AF runs from A, and the line AC makes an angle of 60 degrees with AF. E is on the tower at the level of C (EC horizontal, right angles at E, B and D).

Answer

(a) The angle formed is the angle of elevation (from the roof C of the house to the top A of the tower).

(b) EC=BD=15EC=BD=15 m and ∠ACE=60∘\angle ACE=60^\circ (alternate angle to the angle of depression).

tan⁡60∘=AEEC  ⇒  AE=153≈25.98 m\tan60^\circ=\frac{AE}{EC}\;\Rightarrow\;AE=15\sqrt3\approx25.98\text{ m}

(c) Height of the house CD=EB=AB−AE=45−153≈19.02CD=EB=AB-AE=45-15\sqrt3\approx19.02 m.

(d) For a depression of 45∘45^\circ the vertical drop from the observer to the roof level equals the horizontal distance:

AE′=15tan⁡45∘=15 mAE'=15\tan45^\circ=15\text{ m}

Distance to come down =AE−AE′=153−15=15(3−1)≈10.98=AE-AE'=15\sqrt3-15=15(\sqrt3-1)\approx10.98 m.

The observer must come down about 10.98 m from the top.

From the top of a tower 7575 ft high, the angle of depression of the roof of a house is 30∘30^\circ. If the distance between the tower and the house is 25325\sqrt{3} ft, find the height of the house.

Answer

Let the tower be AB=75AB = 75 ft, the house be CDCD, and BD=253BD = 25\sqrt{3} ft the distance between them. Draw AEAE horizontally to meet CDCD at EE, so AE=BD=253AE = BD = 25\sqrt{3} ft and ∠EAC=30∘\angle EAC = 30^\circ (angle of depression).

In right-angled △AEC\triangle AEC (with CC the roof of the house):

tan⁡30∘=ECAE⇒13=EC253⇒EC=25 ft\tan 30^\circ = \frac{EC}{AE} \Rightarrow \frac{1}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{EC}{25\sqrt{3}} \Rightarrow EC = 25 \text{ ft}

The roof is 2525 ft below the top of the tower, so

Height of house=75−25=50 ft.\text{Height of house} = 75 - 25 = 50 \text{ ft}.

(a) Define the angle of elevation. (1)
(b) Make a diagram according to the given context. (1)
(c) Find the value of xx. (1)
(d) How many meters should the observer move farther from that place to get the angle of elevation of the top of the tower 30∘30^\circ? Find it. (1)

Answer

(a) The angle of elevation is the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer looks up at an object that is higher than the observer's eye level.

(b)

           12 m

BTBT is the tower (12 m), OO is the observer 12 m from the foot BB, and x∘x^\circ is the angle of elevation at OO.

(c) tan⁡x∘=BTOB=1212=1⇒x=45∘\tan x^\circ = \dfrac{BT}{OB} = \dfrac{12}{12} = 1 \Rightarrow x = 45^\circ.

(d) For an angle of elevation of 30∘30^\circ from a new point at distance dd from the foot:

tan⁡30∘=12d⇒d=123≈20.78 m\tan 30^\circ = \frac{12}{d} \Rightarrow d = 12\sqrt{3} \approx 20.78 \text{ m}

Distance to move farther =123−12=12(3−1)≈8.78= 12\sqrt{3} - 12 = 12(\sqrt{3} - 1) \approx 8.78 m.

The distance between a tower and a man is 20 meter and the height of the tower is 36.1 meter. If he finds the angle of elevation to the top of the tower to be 60∘60^\circ, find the height of the man.

Answer

Let the height of the man be hh m. The line of sight rises through (36.1−h)(36.1 - h) m over a horizontal distance of 20 m.

tan⁡60∘=36.1−h20\tan 60^\circ=\frac{36.1-h}{20}

3=36.1−h20⇒36.1−h=203=20×1.732=34.64\sqrt3=\frac{36.1-h}{20} \Rightarrow 36.1-h=20\sqrt3=20\times1.732=34.64

h=36.1−34.64=1.46 mh=36.1-34.64=1.46\ \text{m}

(c) If the angle of elevation ∠ECA=45∘\angle ECA = 45^\circ, then find the distance between the man and the pole. (1)
(d) When the man looks at the top of the pole with the bulb, how far does he move forward or backward from the current position so that the angle of elevation may be 30∘30^\circ? Find it. (1)
Figure: A man CDCD stands at distance from the vertical pole ABAB (with a bulb at the top AA); EE is the point on the pole at the height of the man's eye CC, so ∠ECA\angle ECA is the angle of elevation.

Answer

(a) The angle of elevation is the angle formed above the horizontal line of sight when an observer looks up at an object higher than the observer's eye level.

(b) AB−CD=20.5−1.5=19AB-CD=20.5-1.5=19 m. The man is 19 m shorter than the pole.

(c) Since CE∥DBCE\parallel DB and CD∥EBCD\parallel EB, EB=CD=1.5EB=CD=1.5 m, so AE=20.5−1.5=19AE=20.5-1.5=19 m. In right-angled △AEC\triangle AEC:

tan⁡45∘=AECE⇒1=19CE⇒CE=19 m.\tan45^\circ=\frac{AE}{CE}\Rightarrow 1=\frac{19}{CE}\Rightarrow CE=19\text{ m}.

The man is 19 m from the pole.

(d) For an angle of elevation of 30∘30^\circ, let the new distance be dd:

tan⁡30∘=19d⇒d=193≈32.91 m.\tan30^\circ=\frac{19}{d}\Rightarrow d=19\sqrt3\approx 32.91\text{ m}.

Since 32.91>1932.91>19, he must move backward (away from the pole) by 32.91−19≈13.9132.91-19\approx 13.91 m.

(a) Write the name of the angle formed by the line of sight APAP with the horizontal line ARAR. (1)
(b) Find the length of PRPR. (1)
(c) If ∠PAR=60∘\angle PAR = 60^\circ, what is the distance between the man and the house? Find it. (1)
(d) In which condition is PR=ARPR = AR? Write the reason. (1)
Figure: A man ABAB stands on the ground at BB and looks at the top PP of a house PQPQ; ARAR is the horizontal line from AA meeting PQPQ at RR.

Answer

(a) The angle ∠PAR\angle PAR is the angle of elevation.

(b) PR=PQ−RQ=PQ−AB=11.6−1.6=10PR = PQ - RQ = PQ - AB = 11.6 - 1.6 = 10 m.

(c) In right-angled △PAR\triangle PAR:

tan⁡60∘=PRAR⇒3=10AR⇒AR=103≈5.77 m\tan 60^\circ = \frac{PR}{AR} \Rightarrow \sqrt{3} = \frac{10}{AR} \Rightarrow AR = \frac{10}{\sqrt{3}} \approx 5.77 \text{ m}

So the man is about 5.775.77 m from the house.

(d) PR=ARPR = AR when the angle of elevation is 45∘45^\circ, because then tan⁡∠PAR=PRAR=tan⁡45∘=1\tan\angle PAR = \dfrac{PR}{AR} = \tan 45^\circ = 1.

The diameter of a circular pond is 90 meter and a pillar is fixed at the centre of the pond. The height of the pole is 48 meter and the pond is 3 meter deep. Find the angle of elevation of the top of the pole from a point of the circumference.

Answer

The pole stands at the centre of the pond, on its bottom, which is 3 m below the water surface.

Height of the pole above the water =48−3=45= 48-3 = 45 m.

Radius of the pond =902=45= \frac{90}{2} = 45 m, so the point on the circumference is 45 m horizontally from the pole.

Let θ\theta be the angle of elevation of the top of the pole from that point (on the water level).

tan⁡θ=heightdistance=4545=1  ⟹  θ=45∘\tan\theta = \frac{\text{height}}{\text{distance}} = \frac{45}{45} = 1 \implies \theta = 45^\circ

From the top of a 50 m high tower, the top of a house 34.64 m high is observed at an angle of depression of 60∘60^\circ.
(a) Define the angle of depression. (1)
(b) Sketch the figure according to the given context. (1)
(c) Find the horizontal distance between the tower and the house. (1)
(d) What distance must an observer come down from the top of the tower so that the angle of depression to the top of the house becomes 45∘45^\circ? (1)

Answer

(a) The angle of depression is the angle between the horizontal line through the observer's eye and the line of sight, when the object observed is below the horizontal level.

(b) Figure: draw a vertical tower AB=50AB = 50 m and a vertical house CD=34.64CD = 34.64 m on level ground. From the top AA draw a horizontal line AXAX and the line of sight ACAC to the top of the house, with ∠XAC=60∘\angle XAC = 60^\circ. Draw CE⊥ABCE \perp AB with EE on the tower; then AE=50−34.64AE = 50 - 34.64 and CECE is the horizontal distance.

(c) Height of the tower above the house top: AE=50−34.64=15.36AE = 50 - 34.64 = 15.36 m.

In right-angled △AEC\triangle AEC, ∠ACE=60∘\angle ACE = 60^\circ (alternate angles).

tan⁡60∘=AECE⇒CE=15.363=8.87 m\tan 60^\circ = \dfrac{AE}{CE} \Rightarrow CE = \dfrac{15.36}{\sqrt{3}} = 8.87 \text{ m}

The horizontal distance is about 8.87 m.

(d) For an angle of depression of 45∘45^\circ the vertical drop from the observer to the house top equals the horizontal distance, since tan⁡45∘=1\tan 45^\circ = 1. So the observer must be 8.87 m above the house top.

Distance to come down =15.36−8.87=6.49= 15.36 - 8.87 = 6.49 m.

(c) Find the height of the pole above the water level. (1)
(d) If 30% of the total length of the pole is to be fixed below the water level, how long a pole is required to fix there to make the same angle of elevation? (1)

Answer

(a) The angle of elevation is the angle between the horizontal line through the observer's eye and the line of sight when the object observed is above the horizontal level.

(b) Figure: draw the pond with centre OO and a point AA on the circumference, OA=7OA = 7 m. Draw a vertical pole OP=xOP = x m above the water level at OO. Join APAP, with ∠OAP=60∘\angle OAP = 60^\circ (the angle of elevation from AA to the top PP).

(d) If the angle made by the string is 60∘60^\circ instead of 30∘30^\circ, what changes will there be in the horizontal distance? Give reason. (1)

Answer

Draw a horizontal line from his hand; the string goes from his hand up to the kite KK at 5858 m above the ground, making 30∘30^\circ with this horizontal line.

(b) Height of the kite above the boy's hand =58−10.5=47.5=58-10.5=47.5 m. sin⁡30∘=47.5l⇒l=47.50.5=95 m\sin30^\circ=\frac{47.5}{l}\Rightarrow l=\frac{47.5}{0.5}=95\text{ m} The length of the string is 9595 m.

(c) Let the horizontal distance be dd. tan⁡30∘=47.5d⇒d=47.53≈82.27 m\tan30^\circ=\frac{47.5}{d}\Rightarrow d=47.5\sqrt3\approx 82.27\text{ m}

  • CDC Model Question 2080, Grade 10 Compulsory Mathematics · 1+1+1+1 marks

As shown in the figure, the angle of depression of 45∘45^\circ when a monkey at a height AB = 10.45 m looks at a boy of height CD = 1.45 m.
  • (a) What is the angle of elevation from the boy to the monkey's point of view?
  • (b) How much high is the monkey's point of view than the height of the boy?
  • (c) Find the distance between the tree and the boy.
  • (d) When the monkey looks at the boy, how many meters down or up does the monkey move from its current position to make the angle of depression 30∘30^\circ?
Figure: A tree with the monkey at point A at the top, tree foot at B, height AB = 10.45 m; a boy stands on the ground at C with head at D, CD = 1.45 m; horizontal line AE at the monkey's eye level; the line of sight from A to D makes a 45 degree angle of depression with AE; a horizontal line from D meets the tree trunk.

Answer

(a) The angle of elevation from the boy to the monkey is 45∘45^\circ, because the angle of elevation (at D) equals the angle of depression (at A) as they are alternate angles between parallel horizontal lines.

(b) Height of the monkey's point of view above the boy's height:

AB−CD=10.45−1.45=9 mAB - CD = 10.45 - 1.45 = 9\text{ m}

(c) Let the horizontal distance between the tree and the boy be xx (the line from D meets the trunk at E, so AE=9AE = 9 m, DE=xDE = x).

tan⁡45∘=AEDE=9x  ⇒  1=9x  ⇒  x=9 m\tan 45^\circ = \frac{AE}{DE} = \frac{9}{x}\;\Rightarrow\; 1=\frac{9}{x}\;\Rightarrow\; x = 9\text{ m}

(d) For depression 30∘30^\circ the distance DE=9DE = 9 m stays the same. Let the new vertical height above D's level be hh.

tan⁡30∘=h9  ⇒  h=93=33≈5.20 m\tan 30^\circ = \frac{h}{9}\;\Rightarrow\; h = \frac{9}{\sqrt3}=3\sqrt3\approx 5.20\text{ m}

Movement =9−33≈9−5.20=3.80= 9 - 3\sqrt3 \approx 9 - 5.20 = 3.80 m.

So the monkey must move down by about 3.80 m.
