  • 2077 (2020) Old course 124 · NEB Grade XI · 2+4+2 marks

A company purchased a machinery at Rs. 8,00,000 on 1st Baisakh 2073. On Shrawan 1, 2074 another machine of Rs. 6,00,000 was purchased. On Chaitra 31, 2074 the company sold the machine purchased on 2073 Baisakh 1 for Rs. 6,50,000 and on the same date the company purchased another machine of Rs. 9,00,000. Depreciation was provided on machinery at 10% p.a. on fixed instalment method and accounts were closed on Chaitra end each year.
Required: Machinery account for 2073 to 2075.

Answer

Working notes

Straight-line (fixed instalment) depreciation is 10%10\% of original cost each year, and accounts close on Chaitra end.

  • Machine A (Rs 8,00,000, bought 1 Baisakh 2073): depreciation Rs 80,000 a year. It is held for the whole of 2073 and 2074 until sold on 31 Chaitra 2074.
  • Machine B (Rs 6,00,000, bought 1 Shrawan 2074): 9 months in 2074, so 6,00,000×10%×912=Rs 45,0006{,}00{,}000 \times 10\% \times \frac{9}{12} = Rs\ 45{,}000. Full year (Rs 60,000) in 2075.
  • Machine C (Rs 9,00,000, bought on the last day of 2074): no depreciation in 2074. Rs 90,000 in 2075.
  • Sale of A: book value =8,00,000−(80,000+80,000)=Rs 6,40,000= 8{,}00{,}000 - (80{,}000 + 80{,}000) = Rs\ 6{,}40{,}000. Sold for Rs 6,50,000, so profit on sale = Rs 10,000.

A firm purchased a machine on 1st Baishakh 2079 for Rs. 4,00,000. It spent Rs. 20,000 on its installation and Rs. 10,000 on its carriage. The estimated useful life of the machine is 5 years and its scrap value is Rs. 30,000. The firm closes its books on 31st Chaitra each year and uses the straight-line method of depreciation.
Required:
(a) Calculate the annual depreciation.
(b) Prepare the Machinery Account for the first two years.

Answer

(a) Annual depreciation

Cost of machine = Purchase price + Installation + Carriage = Rs 4,00,000 + Rs 20,000 + Rs 10,000 = Rs 4,30,000
