Explain clearly the term minimum deviation as applied to a prism. Plot a graph between the angle of incidence and the deviation produced.

Answer

When a ray passes through a prism, the angle of deviation δ\delta depends on the angle of incidence ii. As ii increases from a small value, δ\delta first decreases, reaches a least value, then increases again. This least value is the angle of minimum deviation δmin\delta_{min}.

At minimum deviation the ray passes symmetrically through the prism: the angle of incidence equals the angle of emergence (i=ei=e), the refracted ray inside is parallel to the base, and the refraction angles are equal (r1=r2=A/2r_1=r_2=A/2). The refractive index is

μ=sin⁡(A+δmin2)sin⁡A2\mu=\frac{\sin\left(\dfrac{A+\delta_{min}}{2}\right)}{\sin\dfrac{A}{2}}

Graph of δ\delta against ii: a U-shaped (smooth parabola-like) curve, with ii on the horizontal axis and δ\delta on the vertical axis. The curve falls from a high deviation at small ii, has its lowest point δmin\delta_{min} at i=ei=e, and rises again for larger ii. The same deviation is obtained for two different values of ii (the second being the emergence angle) except at the minimum.

For a minimum deviation of light inside the prism the angle of emergence should be equal to (a) angle of prism (b) angle of incidence (c) angle of refraction (d) angle of deviation.

Answer

(b) angle of incidence

At minimum deviation the ray passes symmetrically through the prism, so the angle of emergence equals the angle of incidence (e=ie=i) and the ray inside is parallel to the base.

A 45∘45^\circ-45∘45^\circ-90∘90^\circ glass prism is immersed in water. Calculate the minimum value of refractive index the prism may have if it is to totally reflect a ray incident normally on one of its shortest faces.

Answer

A ray falling normally on a shorter face goes straight in and strikes the hypotenuse at an angle of incidence of 45∘45^\circ. For total internal reflection there, 45∘45^\circ must be at least the critical angle CC for glass-to-water.

sin⁡C=nwng≤sin⁡45∘=12\sin C=\frac{n_w}{n_g}\le\sin45^\circ=\frac{1}{\sqrt2}

ng≥2 nw=1.414×1.33≈1.88n_g\ge\sqrt2\,n_w=1.414\times1.33\approx1.88

So the minimum refractive index of the prism is about 1.88 (1.89 using nw=4/3n_w=4/3).

An object PQ is placed facing the hypotenuse of a 45-90-45 glass prism. What is the nature of the image formed? (a) Erect and diminished (b) Erect and same size (c) Inverted and magnified (d) Inverted and same size
Figure: object PQ placed in front of the hypotenuse face of the prism.

Answer

(d) Inverted and same size

Light enters the hypotenuse face normally (no deviation), meets each of the two equal faces at 45∘45^\circ, which is greater than the critical angle of glass (≈42∘\approx42^\circ), and is totally internally reflected twice. It leaves through the hypotenuse reversed in direction. The image is the same size as the object, and inverted.

In a thin prism of glass (μg=1.5\mu_g=1.5), which of the following relations between the angle of minimum deviation (δmin\delta_{min}) and the angle of refraction (rr) will be correct? (a) δmin=r\delta_{min}=r (b) δmin=1.5 r\delta_{min}=1.5\,r (c) δmin=2r\delta_{min}=2r (d) δmin=r2\delta_{min}=r^2

Answer

(a) δmin=r\delta_{min}=r

For a thin prism δ=(μ−1)A=0.5A\delta=(\mu-1)A=0.5A. At minimum deviation the ray passes symmetrically, so r=A2r=\dfrac{A}{2}, i.e. A=2rA=2r. Hence δmin=0.5×2r=r\delta_{min}=0.5\times2r=r.

The critical angle between an equilateral prism and air is 45∘^\circ. What happens to the incident ray perpendicular to the refracting surface? (a) It is reflected totally from the second surface and emerges perpendicular from the third surface. (b) It gets reflected from second and third surfaces and emerges from the first surface (c) It keeps reflecting from all the three sides of the prism and never emerges out. (d) After deviation, it gets refracted from the second surface.

Answer

(a) It is reflected totally from the second surface and emerges perpendicular from the third surface.

The ray enters the first face normally, so it goes undeviated inside the prism. At the second face, the angle of incidence is (60^\circ), which is greater than the critical angle (45^\circ), so total internal reflection occurs. The reflected ray then strikes the third face normally and hence emerges perpendicular to it.
