Define capacitance of a capacitor. Describe the theory of energy stored in a capacitor with mathematical expression.

Answer

Capacitance: the ratio of the charge stored on a capacitor to the potential difference across it, C=QVC=\dfrac{Q}{V}. Its SI unit is the farad (F), 1 F=1 C V−11\ \text{F}=1\ \text{C V}^{-1}.

Energy stored in a capacitor: Energy is needed to move charge onto the plates against the potential difference already built up; this work is stored as electric potential energy.

Suppose the capacitor has capacitance CC and at some instant carries charge qq, so the potential difference is v=qCv=\dfrac{q}{C}. The work needed to add a small charge dqdq is

dW=v dq=qC dqdW=v\,dq=\frac{q}{C}\,dq

Total work to charge it from 00 to QQ:

W=∫0QqC dq=Q22CW=\int_0^Q\frac{q}{C}\,dq=\frac{Q^2}{2C}

This work is stored as energy UU. Using Q=CVQ=CV,

U=Q22C=12CV2=12QVU=\frac{Q^2}{2C}=\tfrac12CV^2=\tfrac12QV

The energy is stored in the electric field between the plates, with energy density 12ε0E2\tfrac12\varepsilon_0E^2.

Two parallel plate capacitors identical in shape and size are filled with air and mica separately. Which one has larger capacitance? Write a proper relation in support of your answer.

Answer

The capacitor filled with mica has the larger capacitance.

With air (or vacuum) between the plates, C0=ε0AdC_0=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0A}{d}. With a dielectric of relative permittivity (dielectric constant) KK, the capacitance is

C=Kε0Ad=KC0C=\frac{K\varepsilon_0A}{d}=KC_0

The plates are identical in area AA and separation dd, and for mica K≈5K\approx5 to 77 while for air K≈1K\approx1. Hence Cmica=KCair>CairC_{\text{mica}}=K C_{\text{air}}>C_{\text{air}}. The dielectric's polarisation reduces the net field and potential difference for the same charge, so more charge can be stored per volt.

Two capacitors of capacitances 5 μ\muF and 15 μ\muF respectively are connected in series with a battery of 220 V. Find the charge and potential across each capacitor.

Answer

In series, the charge on each capacitor is the same, and the potential differences add.

Equivalent capacitance:

C=C1C2C1+C2=5×155+15=3.75 μFC=\frac{C_1C_2}{C_1+C_2}=\frac{5\times15}{5+15}=3.75\ \mu\text{F}

Charge on each capacitor:

Q=CV=3.75×10−6×220=8.25×10−4 C=825 μCQ=CV=3.75\times10^{-6}\times220=8.25\times10^{-4}\ \text{C}=825\ \mu\text{C}

Potential across each:

V1=QC1=8255=165 V,V2=QC2=82515=55 VV_1=\frac{Q}{C_1}=\frac{825}{5}=165\ \text{V},\qquad V_2=\frac{Q}{C_2}=\frac{825}{15}=55\ \text{V}

Check: 165+55=220165+55=220 V.

Calculate the equivalent capacitance and charge on each capacitor of the given circuit diagram.
Figure: a capacitor circuit diagram (see the paper).

Answer

The figure with the capacitor values was not available, so the answer is given as the method; substitute the values from the diagram.

Equivalent capacitance:

  • Capacitors in parallel: Cp=C1+C2+…C_p=C_1+C_2+\dots
  • Capacitors in series: 1Cs=1C1+1C2+…\dfrac1{C_s}=\dfrac1{C_1}+\dfrac1{C_2}+\dots

First combine each parallel group, then combine the resulting capacitors in series (or the reverse, according to the circuit) until a single CeqC_{eq} remains.

Charge on each capacitor:

  1. Total charge drawn from the source: Q=CeqVQ=C_{eq}V.
  2. Capacitors in series carry the same charge, equal to the charge on their equivalent: Q1=Q2=QQ_1=Q_2=Q.
  3. For a parallel group with voltage VpV_p across it (found from Vp=Q/CpV_p=Q/C_p), each capacitor's charge is q=C Vpq=C\,V_p, and these add to the charge of the group.

The diagram shows a graph of charge against voltage for a capacitor. (a) What is represented by the slope of the graph? (b) What quantity is represented by the shaded area? (c) An electronic camera flash gun contains a capacitor of 100 μ\muF which is charged to a voltage of 250 V. Show that the energy stored is 3.1 J.

Answer

(a) The slope of a QQ–VV graph is QV\dfrac{Q}{V}, which is the capacitance CC of the capacitor.

(b) The area under the graph (shaded) represents the energy stored in the capacitor, i.e. the work done in charging it (12QV\tfrac12 QV).

(c) E=12CV2=12×(100×10−6)×(250)2=12×10−4×62500=3.125 J≈3.1 JE=\tfrac12 CV^2=\tfrac12\times(100\times10^{-6})\times(250)^2=\tfrac12\times10^{-4}\times62500=3.125\ \text{J}\approx3.1\ \text{J}

If a dielectric is inserted between the plates of a charged capacitor, what will be the effect on the energy stored in the capacitor?

Answer

The effect depends on whether the battery stays connected.

  • Battery disconnected (charge QQ constant): inserting a dielectric of constant KK raises the capacitance to C′=KCC'=KC. The stored energy U=Q22CU=\dfrac{Q^2}{2C} therefore falls to U′=UKU'=\dfrac{U}{K}, decreasing. The missing energy is the work done by the field in pulling the slab in.
  • Battery connected (potential VV constant): CC rises to KCKC, so U=12CV2U=\tfrac12CV^2 rises to KUKU. The extra energy is supplied by the battery.

A thundercloud and the earth can be regarded as a parallel plate capacitor. Taking the area of the thundercloud to be 50 km250\ \text{km}^2, its height above the earth as 1 km and its potential as 100 kV, calculate the energy stored in it.

Answer

Treat the cloud and earth as a parallel plate capacitor with A=50 km2=5×107 m2A=50\ \text{km}^2=5\times10^{7}\ \text{m}^2, d=1 km=103 md=1\ \text{km}=10^{3}\ \text{m} and V=100 kV=105 VV=100\ \text{kV}=10^{5}\ \text{V}.

Capacitance:

C=ε0Ad=8.85×10−12×5×107103=4.43×10−7 FC=\frac{\varepsilon_0A}{d}=\frac{8.85\times10^{-12}\times5\times10^{7}}{10^{3}}=4.43\times10^{-7}\ \text{F}

Energy stored:

U=12CV2=12×4.43×10−7×(105)2≈2.2×103 JU=\tfrac12CV^2=\tfrac12\times4.43\times10^{-7}\times(10^{5})^2\approx2.2\times10^{3}\ \text{J}

The energy stored is about 2.2 kJ2.2\ \text{kJ}.

(a) Define capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor and state one application of it in electric circuit. (b) Three capacitors each of 1000μ\muF are connected in an electric circuit as shown below. (i) Identify the type of combination shown in Fig. 7.1, and calculate the effective capacitance of the combination.
Figure: Fig. 7.1: Circuit diagram showing three capacitors connected between points X and Y.

Answer

(a) The capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor is the charge stored per unit potential difference between its plates:

C=QVC=\frac{Q}{V}

Its SI unit is the farad (F). For plates of area AA separated by dd in air, C=ε0AdC=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0A}{d}.

Application: a capacitor is used to smooth the output of a rectifier (or to store charge in a camera flash, or to block d.c. while passing a.c.).

(b)(i) Two capacitors are joined in parallel, and this pair is in series with the third, so the combination is a mixed (series–parallel) combination.

Parallel pair:

Cp=1000+1000=2000 μFC_p=1000+1000=2000\ \mu\text{F}

In series with the third capacitor:

1C=12000+11000=32000 ⇒ C=20003≈667 μF\frac{1}{C}=\frac{1}{2000}+\frac{1}{1000}=\frac{3}{2000}\ \Rightarrow\ C=\frac{2000}{3}\approx667\ \mu\text{F}

Define capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor and state one application of it in electric circuit.

Answer

Capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor is the ability of the capacitor to store electric charge per unit potential difference between its plates. If a charge QQ given to the plates produces a potential difference VV between them, then

C=QVC = \frac{Q}{V}

Its SI unit is the farad (F). For a parallel plate capacitor with plate area AA and separation dd, C=ε0AdC = \dfrac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d}.

One application: It is used in electric circuits for storing charge and energy, e.g. in a camera flash, in tuning circuits of radio receivers, and as a filter (to block d.c. and pass a.c.) in rectifier circuits.

Three capacitors each of 1000μF are connected in an electric circuit as shown below. (i) Identify the type of combination shown in Fig. 7.1, and calculate the effective capacitance of the combination.
Figure: Fig. 7.1: Circuit diagram showing three capacitors each of 1000μF connected together.

Answer

(i) In Fig. 7.1 the capacitors C1C_1 and C2C_2 are joined side by side (their plates connected to the same two points), and this pair is then joined end to end with C3C_3. So the arrangement is a mixed (series–parallel) combination — a parallel combination in series with a single capacitor.

Calculation of effective capacitance

Capacitors C1C_1 and C2C_2 are in parallel, so their equivalent capacitance is

Cp=C1+C2=1000+1000=2000 μFC_p = C_1 + C_2 = 1000 + 1000 = 2000\ \mu\text{F}

Now CpC_p and C3C_3 are in series, so

1Ceq=1Cp+1C3=12000+11000=1+22000=32000 μF−1\frac{1}{C_{eq}} = \frac{1}{C_p} + \frac{1}{C_3} = \frac{1}{2000} + \frac{1}{1000} = \frac{1+2}{2000} = \frac{3}{2000}\ \mu\text{F}^{-1}

Ceq=20003=666.67 μF≈667 μFC_{eq} = \frac{2000}{3} = 666.67\ \mu\text{F} \approx 667\ \mu\text{F}

So the effective capacitance of the combination is about 6.67×10−46.67 \times 10^{-4} F.

A capacitor of capacitance 6 μ\muF is charged to a potential equal to 150 V. Its potential falls to 90 V when another uncharged capacitor is connected in parallel to it. Find the capacitance of the second capacitor.

Answer

Charge on the first capacitor:

Q=C1V1=6×10−6×150=9×10−4 CQ=C_1V_1=6\times10^{-6}\times150=9\times10^{-4}\ \text{C}

Connecting an uncharged capacitor C2C_2 in parallel shares this charge without loss, so Q=(C1+C2)VQ=(C_1+C_2)V with V=90 VV=90\ \text{V}:

C1+C2=QV=9×10−490=10 μFC_1+C_2=\frac{Q}{V}=\frac{9\times10^{-4}}{90}=10\ \mu\text{F}

C2=10−6=4 μFC_2=10-6=4\ \mu\text{F}

The second capacitor has capacitance 4 μF4\ \mu\text{F}.
