By Newton's Raphson, the positive root of x3−18=0x^3 - 18 = 0 in (2,3)(2, 3) is (a) 2.666 (b) 2.621 (c) 2.620 (d) 2.622

Answer

(b) 2.621

Let f(x)=x3−18f(x)=x^3-18, so xn+1=xn−xn3−183xn2x_{n+1}=x_n-\dfrac{x_n^3-18}{3x_n^2}. Starting from x0=2.5x_0=2.5:

x1=2.5+2.37518.75≈2.6267,x2≈2.6267−0.122720.698≈2.6207.x_1=2.5+\frac{2.375}{18.75}\approx2.6267,\qquad x_2\approx2.6267-\frac{0.1227}{20.698}\approx2.6207.

So the root is ≈2.621\approx2.621 to three decimal places.

Define Trapezoidal rule. Evaluate using Trapezoidal rule for ∫13dx1+x\int_1^3 \frac{dx}{1+x}, n=4n=4.

Answer

Trapezoidal rule: A numerical method that approximates a definite integral by dividing [a,b][a,b] into nn equal strips of width h=b−anh=\dfrac{b-a}{n} and treating each strip as a trapezium:

∫abf(x) dx≈h2[(y0+yn)+2(y1+y2+⋯+yn−1)].\int_a^b f(x)\,dx\approx\frac h2\left[(y_0+y_n)+2(y_1+y_2+\cdots+y_{n-1})\right].

Here a=1a=1, b=3b=3, n=4n=4, so h=0.5h=0.5 and f(x)=11+xf(x)=\dfrac1{1+x}.

(The exact value is ln⁡2≈0.6931\ln2\approx0.6931.)
