Explain the concept of psychology.
Answer
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It tries to describe, explain, predict and control how living beings, especially humans, think, feel and act.
1. Meaning and origin The word comes from the Greek words psyche (soul or mind) and logos (study or discourse). In its earliest sense it meant "study of the soul". Over time the definition changed: philosophers saw it as the study of the soul, later of the mind, then (Wilhelm Wundt, 1879, first laboratory at Leipzig) of consciousness. John B. Watson and the behaviourists defined it as the study of observable behaviour. Today it is accepted as the science of behaviour and mental processes.
2. Behaviour and mental processes
- Behaviour means observable actions such as walking, speaking, crying or writing.
- Mental processes are internal experiences that cannot be seen directly, such as thinking, remembering, perceiving, feeling and motivation. They are studied through what people say and do.
3. Psychology as a science Psychology uses systematic observation, experiments, surveys, case studies and tests, and its conclusions are checked with evidence. This separates it from common sense or speculation.
4. Goals of psychology
- Description: stating what behaviour occurs.
- Explanation: finding why it occurs.
- Prediction: forecasting what may happen in future.
- Control: influencing behaviour to improve life, for example treating anxiety or improving study habits.
5. Example If a student fails repeatedly, a psychologist observes her behaviour (absence, low marks), studies mental processes (anxiety, low motivation), explains the causes and suggests changes such as counselling and better study methods.
Thus psychology is a broad scientific discipline that helps us understand ourselves and others and solve everyday problems.

Describe the scope of psychology.
Answer
Psychology is a broad discipline that studies behaviour and mental processes. Its scope refers to the wide range of fields, settings and activities in which psychological knowledge is applied. The scope of psychology can be described under the following points:
1. Study of behaviour and mental processes Psychology studies both the observable behaviour (actions, speech, gestures) and the covert mental processes (thinking, memory, emotion, motivation, perception). This makes it a science of both the outer and inner life of an individual.
2. Pure and applied fields The scope is divided into pure (theoretical) and applied (practical) branches. Pure branches such as general psychology, cognitive psychology, biological psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology and personality psychology develop knowledge and theories. Applied branches such as clinical, counselling, educational, industrial/organisational, health, sports, forensic and environmental psychology use this knowledge to solve real-life problems.
3. Study of the individual and the group Psychology studies the individual (intelligence, personality, learning, emotion) as well as groups and society (attitudes, group behaviour, leadership, prejudice, inter-group relations). Thus it covers both individual and social levels of behaviour.
4. Study across the life span Its scope extends from conception to old age. It studies prenatal development, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age, covering physical, cognitive, emotional and social changes at each stage.
5. Study of normal and abnormal behaviour Psychology deals with normal behaviour (adjustment, well-being, effective functioning) and abnormal behaviour (anxiety, depression, mental disorders), including their causes, assessment, treatment and prevention.
6. Application in various fields Psychological principles are applied in many settings — schools (improving teaching and learning), hospitals and clinics (mental health care), industries and organisations (selection, training, motivation, productivity), sports (enhancing performance), the legal system (understanding witnesses, criminals) and the community (social welfare programmes).
7. Research and professional activities The scope also includes scientific research (experiments, surveys, observation, testing) and professional services such as assessment, counselling, psychotherapy, teaching and consultancy.
Conclusion Thus, the scope of psychology is very wide. It ranges from the study of the individual mind to group and social behaviour, from normal to abnormal behaviour, and from pure research to practical application in almost every sphere of human life.
