Express tan⁡−1x\tan^{-1}x in terms of inverse of sine function.

Answer

Let θ=tan⁡−1x\theta=\tan^{-1}x, so tan⁡θ=x\tan\theta=x with −π2<θ<π2-\dfrac{\pi}{2}<\theta<\dfrac{\pi}{2}.

In a right triangle with perpendicular xx and base 11, the hypotenuse is 1+x2\sqrt{1+x^2}, so

sin⁡θ=x1+x2.\sin\theta=\frac{x}{\sqrt{1+x^2}}.

Since θ\theta lies in (−π2,π2)\left(-\dfrac{\pi}{2},\dfrac{\pi}{2}\right), the principal range of sin⁡−1\sin^{-1}, we get

tan⁡−1x=sin⁡−1x1+x2.\tan^{-1}x=\sin^{-1}\frac{x}{\sqrt{1+x^2}}.

Solve for general values of θ\theta: sin⁡θ+sin⁡2θ+sin⁡3θ=cos⁡θ+cos⁡2θ+cos⁡3θ\sin\theta+\sin2\theta+\sin3\theta=\cos\theta+\cos2\theta+\cos3\theta

Answer

Group the terms sin⁡θ+sin⁡3θ\sin\theta+\sin3\theta and cos⁡θ+cos⁡3θ\cos\theta+\cos3\theta:

sin⁡3θ+sin⁡θ=2sin⁡2θcos⁡θ,cos⁡3θ+cos⁡θ=2cos⁡2θcos⁡θ.\sin3\theta+\sin\theta=2\sin2\theta\cos\theta,\qquad \cos3\theta+\cos\theta=2\cos2\theta\cos\theta.

The equation becomes

2sin⁡2θcos⁡θ+sin⁡2θ=2cos⁡2θcos⁡θ+cos⁡2θ2\sin2\theta\cos\theta+\sin2\theta=2\cos2\theta\cos\theta+\cos2\theta

⇒  sin⁡2θ (2cos⁡θ+1)=cos⁡2θ (2cos⁡θ+1)\Rightarrow\;\sin2\theta\,(2\cos\theta+1)=\cos2\theta\,(2\cos\theta+1)

⇒  (2cos⁡θ+1)(sin⁡2θ−cos⁡2θ)=0.\Rightarrow\;(2\cos\theta+1)(\sin2\theta-\cos2\theta)=0.

Case 1: 2cos⁡θ+1=0⇒cos⁡θ=−12=cos⁡2π32\cos\theta+1=0\Rightarrow\cos\theta=-\dfrac12=\cos\dfrac{2\pi}{3}, so

θ=2nπ±2π3,n∈Z.\theta=2n\pi\pm\frac{2\pi}{3},\quad n\in\mathbb{Z}.

Case 2: sin⁡2θ=cos⁡2θ⇒tan⁡2θ=1=tan⁡π4\sin2\theta=\cos2\theta\Rightarrow\tan2\theta=1=\tan\dfrac{\pi}{4}, so 2θ=nπ+π42\theta=n\pi+\dfrac{\pi}{4}, i.e.

θ=nπ2+π8,n∈Z.\theta=\frac{n\pi}{2}+\frac{\pi}{8},\quad n\in\mathbb{Z}.

General solution: θ=2nπ±2π3\theta=2n\pi\pm\dfrac{2\pi}{3} or θ=nπ2+π8\theta=\dfrac{n\pi}{2}+\dfrac{\pi}{8}, n∈Zn\in\mathbb{Z}.

Prove that sin⁡(2sin⁡−1x)=2x1−x2\sin(2\sin^{-1}x)=2x\sqrt{1-x^2}.

Answer

Let θ=sin⁡−1x\theta=\sin^{-1}x, so sin⁡θ=x\sin\theta=x with −π2≤θ≤π2-\dfrac\pi2\le\theta\le\dfrac\pi2. In this range cos⁡θ≥0\cos\theta\ge0, so

cos⁡θ=1−sin⁡2θ=1−x2.\cos\theta=\sqrt{1-\sin^2\theta}=\sqrt{1-x^2}.

Then

sin⁡(2sin⁡−1x)=sin⁡2θ=2sin⁡θcos⁡θ=2x1−x2. ■\sin(2\sin^{-1}x)=\sin2\theta=2\sin\theta\cos\theta=2x\sqrt{1-x^2}.\ \blacksquare

The principal value of (\sin^{-1}\left(\sin\dfrac{5\pi}{6}\right)) is:
(a) (\dfrac{5\pi}{6})
(b) (\dfrac{\pi}{6})
(c) (-\dfrac{\pi}{6})
(d) (\dfrac{2\pi}{3})

Answer

(b) π6\dfrac{\pi}{6}

sin⁡5π6=12\sin\dfrac{5\pi}{6}=\dfrac12, and the principal value of sin⁡−1\sin^{-1} lies in [−π2,π2]\left[-\dfrac\pi2,\dfrac\pi2\right], so sin⁡−1(12)=π6\sin^{-1}\left(\dfrac12\right)=\dfrac\pi6.

Prove that:
[ \tan^{-1}\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)+\tan^{-1}\left(\frac{1}{3}\right)=\frac{\pi}{4} ]
Hence, find the value of (\tan^{-1}\left(\dfrac{1}{2}\right)+\tan^{-1}\left(\dfrac{1}{3}\right)+\tan^{-1}\left(\dfrac{1}{4}\right)).

Answer

Let A=tan⁡−112A=\tan^{-1}\dfrac12 and B=tan⁡−113B=\tan^{-1}\dfrac13, so tan⁡A=12\tan A=\dfrac12, tan⁡B=13\tan B=\dfrac13.

tan⁡(A+B)=tan⁡A+tan⁡B1−tan⁡Atan⁡B=12+131−16=5/65/6=1.\tan(A+B)=\frac{\tan A+\tan B}{1-\tan A\tan B}=\frac{\frac12+\frac13}{1-\frac16}=\frac{5/6}{5/6}=1.

Since A,B>0A,B>0 and both are less than π4\frac\pi4, we have 0<A+B<π20<A+B<\frac\pi2, so A+B=π4A+B=\dfrac\pi4. Hence

tan⁡−112+tan⁡−113=π4.\tan^{-1}\frac12+\tan^{-1}\frac13=\frac\pi4.

Now the second part:

tan⁡−112+tan⁡−113+tan⁡−114=π4+tan⁡−114.\tan^{-1}\frac12+\tan^{-1}\frac13+\tan^{-1}\frac14=\frac\pi4+\tan^{-1}\frac14.

Let C=tan⁡−114C=\tan^{-1}\dfrac14. Then

tan⁡(π4+C)=1+141−14=5/43/4=53.\tan\left(\frac\pi4+C\right)=\frac{1+\frac14}{1-\frac14}=\frac{5/4}{3/4}=\frac53.

Since π4+C<π2\frac\pi4+C<\frac\pi2,

tan⁡−112+tan⁡−113+tan⁡−114=tan⁡−153≈1.030 rad (≈59.04∘).\tan^{-1}\frac12+\tan^{-1}\frac13+\tan^{-1}\frac14=\tan^{-1}\frac53\approx1.030\text{ rad}\ (\approx59.04^\circ).

Solve the trigonometric equation:
[ 2\cos^2\theta-3\cos\theta+1=0 ]
for (0^\circ\le \theta\le 360^\circ), and write the general solution.

Answer

2cos⁡2θ−3cos⁡θ+1=0 ⇒ (2cos⁡θ−1)(cos⁡θ−1)=0.2\cos^2\theta-3\cos\theta+1=0\ \Rightarrow\ (2\cos\theta-1)(\cos\theta-1)=0.

So cos⁡θ=12\cos\theta=\dfrac12 or cos⁡θ=1\cos\theta=1.

For 0∘≤θ≤360∘0^\circ\le\theta\le360^\circ:

  • cos⁡θ=12\cos\theta=\dfrac12: θ=60∘, 300∘\theta=60^\circ,\ 300^\circ
  • cos⁡θ=1\cos\theta=1: θ=0∘, 360∘\theta=0^\circ,\ 360^\circ

Solutions: θ=0∘, 60∘, 300∘, 360∘\theta=0^\circ,\ 60^\circ,\ 300^\circ,\ 360^\circ.

General solution:

  • cos⁡θ=12=cos⁡π3⇒θ=2nπ±π3\cos\theta=\dfrac12=\cos\dfrac\pi3 \Rightarrow \theta=2n\pi\pm\dfrac\pi3
  • cos⁡θ=1⇒θ=2nπ\cos\theta=1 \Rightarrow \theta=2n\pi

θ=2nπ  or  θ=2nπ±π3,n∈Z\theta=2n\pi\ \text{ or }\ \theta=2n\pi\pm\frac\pi3,\qquad n\in\mathbb Z

In degrees: θ=360∘n\theta=360^\circ n or θ=360∘n±60∘\theta=360^\circ n\pm60^\circ.

Solve the equation:
[ \sin 2x+\cos x=0 ]
for (0^\circ\le x\le 360^\circ), and also write its general solution.

Answer

Using sin⁡2x=2sin⁡xcos⁡x\sin2x=2\sin x\cos x:

2sin⁡xcos⁡x+cos⁡x=0 ⇒ cos⁡x (2sin⁡x+1)=0.2\sin x\cos x+\cos x=0\ \Rightarrow\ \cos x\,(2\sin x+1)=0.

So cos⁡x=0\cos x=0 or sin⁡x=−12\sin x=-\dfrac12.

Solutions in 0∘≤x≤360∘0^\circ\le x\le360^\circ

  • cos⁡x=0\cos x=0: x=90∘, 270∘x=90^\circ,\ 270^\circ.
  • sin⁡x=−12\sin x=-\dfrac12: sine is negative in the third and fourth quadrants, so x=180∘+30∘=210∘x=180^\circ+30^\circ=210^\circ and x=360∘−30∘=330∘x=360^\circ-30^\circ=330^\circ.

x=90∘, 210∘, 270∘, 330∘x=90^\circ,\ 210^\circ,\ 270^\circ,\ 330^\circ

General solution

  • cos⁡x=0\cos x=0: x=(2n+1)π2x=(2n+1)\dfrac\pi2
  • sin⁡x=−12=sin⁡(−π6)\sin x=-\dfrac12=\sin\left(-\dfrac\pi6\right): x=nπ+(−1)n(−π6)=nπ+(−1)n+1π6x=n\pi+(-1)^{n}\left(-\dfrac\pi6\right)=n\pi+(-1)^{n+1}\dfrac\pi6

x=(2n+1)π2  or  x=nπ+(−1)n+1π6,n∈Zx=(2n+1)\frac\pi2\ \text{ or }\ x=n\pi+(-1)^{n+1}\frac\pi6,\qquad n\in\mathbb Z

In degrees: x=(2n+1)90∘x=(2n+1)90^\circ or x=180∘n+(−1)n+130∘x=180^\circ n+(-1)^{n+1}30^\circ.
