Evaluate lim⁡x→a3a−x−x+a4(x−a)\displaystyle\lim_{x\to a}\frac{\sqrt{3a - x} - \sqrt{x + a}}{4(x - a)}.
Also find the following limit when it exists: f(x)={x+4,x≥22x+2,x<2at x=2.f(x) = \begin{cases}x + 4, & x \ge 2\\ 2x + 2, & x < 2\end{cases}\quad\text{at } x = 2.

Answer

First limit

Both numerator and denominator vanish at x=ax = a, so rationalise the numerator: lim⁡x→a(3a−x−x+a)(3a−x+x+a)4(x−a)(3a−x+x+a)\lim_{x\to a}\frac{(\sqrt{3a-x} - \sqrt{x+a})(\sqrt{3a-x} + \sqrt{x+a})}{4(x-a)(\sqrt{3a-x} + \sqrt{x+a})} =lim⁡x→a(3a−x)−(x+a)4(x−a)(3a−x+x+a)=lim⁡x→a−2(x−a)4(x−a)(3a−x+x+a)= \lim_{x\to a}\frac{(3a-x)-(x+a)}{4(x-a)(\sqrt{3a-x} + \sqrt{x+a})} = \lim_{x\to a}\frac{-2(x-a)}{4(x-a)(\sqrt{3a-x} + \sqrt{x+a})} =lim⁡x→a−12(3a−x+x+a)=−12⋅22a=−142a= \lim_{x\to a}\frac{-1}{2(\sqrt{3a-x} + \sqrt{x+a})} = \frac{-1}{2\cdot 2\sqrt{2a}} = -\frac{1}{4\sqrt{2a}}

Limit of f(x)f(x) at x=2x = 2

Left-hand limit (x<2x<2): lim⁡x→2−(2x+2)=6\displaystyle\lim_{x\to2^-}(2x+2) = 6.

Right-hand limit (x≥2x\ge 2): lim⁡x→2+(x+4)=6\displaystyle\lim_{x\to2^+}(x+4) = 6.

Since both are equal, the limit exists and lim⁡x→2f(x)=6\displaystyle\lim_{x\to2} f(x) = 6 (which also equals f(2)=6f(2) = 6).

The total cost CC of output QQ is given by C=300Q−10Q2+13Q3C = 300Q - 10Q^2 + \tfrac{1}{3}Q^3. Find the output levels at which the marginal cost and the average cost attain their respective minima. Also, show that the marginal cost and average cost function are equal at minimum average cost.

Answer

Given C=300Q−10Q2+13Q3C = 300Q - 10Q^2 + \tfrac13 Q^3.

Marginal cost MC=dCdQ=300−20Q+Q2MC = \frac{dC}{dQ} = 300 - 20Q + Q^2 d(MC)dQ=−20+2Q=0⇒Q=10,d2(MC)dQ2=2>0\frac{d(MC)}{dQ} = -20 + 2Q = 0 \Rightarrow Q = 10,\qquad \frac{d^2(MC)}{dQ^2} = 2 > 0 So MC is minimum at Q=10Q = 10 (minimum value 300−200+100=200300 - 200 + 100 = 200).

Average cost AC=CQ=300−10Q+13Q2AC = \frac{C}{Q} = 300 - 10Q + \tfrac13 Q^2 d(AC)dQ=−10+23Q=0⇒Q=15,d2(AC)dQ2=23>0\frac{d(AC)}{dQ} = -10 + \tfrac23 Q = 0 \Rightarrow Q = 15,\qquad \frac{d^2(AC)}{dQ^2} = \tfrac23 > 0 So AC is minimum at Q=15Q = 15.

MC = AC at minimum AC (at Q=15Q=15) AC=300−150+13(225)=300−150+75=225AC = 300 - 150 + \tfrac13(225) = 300 - 150 + 75 = 225 MC=300−20(15)+225=300−300+225=225MC = 300 - 20(15) + 225 = 300 - 300 + 225 = 225 Thus MC=AC=225MC = AC = 225 when average cost is minimum.

Define derivative. Use it to find the derivative of 3x+5x\dfrac{3x + 5}{\sqrt{x}}.

Answer

Definition: The derivative of y=f(x)y = f(x) with respect to xx is dydx=f′(x)=lim⁡h→0f(x+h)−f(x)h\frac{dy}{dx} = f'(x) = \lim_{h\to 0}\frac{f(x+h) - f(x)}{h} provided the limit exists.

Derivative of 3x+5x\dfrac{3x+5}{\sqrt x}

Write f(x)=3x+5x=3x+5xf(x) = \dfrac{3x+5}{\sqrt x} = 3\sqrt{x} + \dfrac{5}{\sqrt{x}} and differentiate each term from the definition.

For x\sqrt x: lim⁡h→0x+h−xh=lim⁡h→01x+h+x=12x\lim_{h\to0}\frac{\sqrt{x+h}-\sqrt x}{h} = \lim_{h\to0}\frac{1}{\sqrt{x+h}+\sqrt x} = \frac{1}{2\sqrt x}

For 1x\dfrac{1}{\sqrt x}: lim⁡h→01x+h−1xh=lim⁡h→0x−x+hhxx+h=lim⁡h→0−1xx+h (x+x+h)=−12xx\lim_{h\to0}\frac{\frac1{\sqrt{x+h}}-\frac1{\sqrt x}}{h} = \lim_{h\to0}\frac{\sqrt x-\sqrt{x+h}}{h\sqrt x\sqrt{x+h}} = \lim_{h\to0}\frac{-1}{\sqrt x\sqrt{x+h}\,(\sqrt x+\sqrt{x+h})} = -\frac{1}{2x\sqrt x}

Therefore f′(x)=32x−52xx=3x−52xxf'(x) = \frac{3}{2\sqrt x} - \frac{5}{2x\sqrt x} = \frac{3x-5}{2x\sqrt x}

Choose the correct option.
The value of (\displaystyle \lim_{x \to 2} \frac{x^2 - 4}{x - 2}) is:
(a) (0)
(b) (2)
(c) (4)
(d) (\text{does not exist})

Answer

(c) 44

Factorising, x2−4x−2=(x−2)(x+2)x−2=x+2\dfrac{x^2-4}{x-2}=\dfrac{(x-2)(x+2)}{x-2}=x+2 for x≠2x\neq2, so the limit as x→2x\to2 is 2+2=42+2=4.

Find the derivative of (f(x) = 3x^2 - 5x + 2) from first principles. Also, evaluate (f'(1)).

Answer

By the first principle, f′(x)=lim⁡h→0f(x+h)−f(x)hf'(x)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{f(x+h)-f(x)}{h}

With f(x)=3x2−5x+2f(x)=3x^2-5x+2, f(x+h)=3(x+h)2−5(x+h)+2=3x2+6xh+3h2−5x−5h+2f(x+h)=3(x+h)^2-5(x+h)+2=3x^2+6xh+3h^2-5x-5h+2

f(x+h)−f(x)=6xh+3h2−5h=h(6x+3h−5)f(x+h)-f(x)=6xh+3h^2-5h=h(6x+3h-5)

f′(x)=lim⁡h→0h(6x+3h−5)h=lim⁡h→0(6x+3h−5)=6x−5f'(x)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{h(6x+3h-5)}{h}=\lim_{h\to0}(6x+3h-5)=6x-5

Now, f′(1)=6(1)−5=1f'(1)=6(1)-5=1

Hence f′(x)=6x−5f'(x)=6x-5 and f′(1)=1f'(1)=1.

The total cost function of a firm is given by (C(x) = 2x^3 - 9x^2 + 12x + 10), where (x) is the number of units produced.
(i) Find the marginal cost function.
(ii) Find the value of (x) for which marginal cost is minimum.

Answer

(i) Marginal cost function

Marginal cost is the derivative of total cost: MC=dCdx=6x2−18x+12MC=\frac{dC}{dx}=6x^2-18x+12

(ii) Value of xx for minimum marginal cost

Let MC=f(x)=6x2−18x+12MC=f(x)=6x^2-18x+12. For a minimum, f′(x)=0f'(x)=0: 12x−18=0  ⇒  x=1812=1.512x-18=0 \;\Rightarrow\; x=\frac{18}{12}=1.5

Also f′′(x)=12>0f''(x)=12>0, so MCMC is minimum at x=1.5x=1.5 units.

The minimum marginal cost is MC(1.5)=6(1.5)2−18(1.5)+12=13.5−27+12=−1.5MC(1.5)=6(1.5)^2-18(1.5)+12=13.5-27+12=-1.5

So marginal cost is minimum when x=1.5x=1.5 units.

The demand function of a product is (p = 50 - 2x) and the total cost function is (C(x) = 3x^2 + 10x + 5), where (x) is the quantity produced and sold and (p) is the price per unit.
(i) Find the total revenue function (R(x)).
(ii) Find the profit function (P(x)).
(iii) Determine the value of (x) that maximizes profit.
(iv) Find the maximum profit.

Answer

Given p=50−2xp=50-2x and C(x)=3x2+10x+5C(x)=3x^2+10x+5.

(i) Total revenue R(x)=p⋅x=(50−2x)x=50x−2x2R(x)=p\cdot x=(50-2x)x=50x-2x^2

(ii) Profit function P(x)=R(x)−C(x)=(50x−2x2)−(3x2+10x+5)=−5x2+40x−5P(x)=R(x)-C(x)=(50x-2x^2)-(3x^2+10x+5)=-5x^2+40x-5

(iii) Profit-maximising output

P′(x)=−10x+40=0  ⇒  x=4P'(x)=-10x+40=0 \;\Rightarrow\; x=4

Since P′′(x)=−10<0P''(x)=-10<0, profit is maximum at x=4x=4 units.

(iv) Maximum profit P(4)=−5(16)+160−5=−80+160−5=75P(4)=-5(16)+160-5=-80+160-5=75

Maximum profit == Rs 75 (at x=4x=4 units).
