What is drift velocity of electrons? Two copper wires of different diameter are joined end to end. If current flows in the wire combination, what happens to the drift speed of electrons when they move from larger diameter wire to smaller diameter wire?

Answer

Drift velocity: the average velocity with which free electrons move in a conductor in the direction opposite to the applied electric field, superimposed on their random thermal motion. It is given by

vd=InAev_d=\frac{I}{nAe}

Wires of different diameter: The same current II flows through both wires, and both are copper, so the free-electron density nn is the same. Since vd=InAev_d=\dfrac{I}{nAe}, we get vd∝1A∝1d2v_d\propto\dfrac1A\propto\dfrac1{d^2}.

When the electrons move from the larger-diameter wire into the smaller-diameter wire, the cross-sectional area AA decreases, so the drift speed increases. It is inversely proportional to the square of the diameter.

A 480 watt electric heater is desired to operate from a 240 V electric line. (i) Find the resistance of the heater. (ii) Find the current through the heater.

Answer

(i) From P=V2RP = \dfrac{V^2}{R},

R=V2P=2402480=120 ΩR = \frac{V^2}{P} = \frac{240^2}{480} = 120\ \Omega

(ii) From P=VIP = VI,

I=PV=480240=2 AI = \frac{P}{V} = \frac{480}{240} = 2\ \text{A}

Check: V/R=240/120=2V/R = 240/120 = 2 A, which agrees.

The resistance of a wire is RR. If the length of the wire is doubled by stretching, then the new resistance will be (a) 2R2R (b) 4R4R (c) RR (d) R/4R/4

Answer

(b) 4R4R

Stretching keeps the volume constant, AL=constAL=\text{const}. If LL doubles, AA halves, so R=ρL/AR=\rho L/A becomes ρ(2L)/(A/2)=4R\rho(2L)/(A/2)=4R.

An electric heater is made from nichrome wire. Nichrome has a resistivity of 1.0×10−6 Ω m1.0\times10^{-6}\ \Omega\,\text{m} at the operating temperature of the heater. The heater is to have a power dissipation of 60 W when the potential difference across its terminals is 12 V. (a) State what you mean by electric current. (b) Calculate the length of nichrome wire of diameter 0.80 mm required for the heater. (c) A second heater, also designed to operate from a 12 V supply, is constructed using the same nichrome wire but half the length of that calculated in (b). Explain the effect of this change in length of wire on the power of the heater.

Answer

(a) Electric current is the rate of flow of charge through a cross-section of a conductor, I=ΔQΔtI=\dfrac{\Delta Q}{\Delta t}. Its SI unit is the ampere (C s−1^{-1}).

(b) From P=V2RP=\dfrac{V^2}{R}, R=V2P=12260=2.4 ΩR=\frac{V^2}{P}=\frac{12^2}{60}=2.4\ \Omega

Cross-sectional area of the wire: A=π(d2)2=π (0.40×10−3)2=5.03×10−7 m2A=\pi\left(\frac{d}{2}\right)^2=\pi\,(0.40\times10^{-3})^2=5.03\times10^{-7}\ \text{m}^2

From R=ρLAR=\dfrac{\rho L}{A}, L=RAρ=2.4×5.03×10−71.0×10−6≈1.2 mL=\frac{RA}{\rho}=\frac{2.4\times5.03\times10^{-7}}{1.0\times10^{-6}}\approx 1.2\ \text{m}

(c) Halving the length halves the resistance (R∝LR\propto L), to 1.2 Ω1.2\ \Omega. Since the supply is still 12 V, P=V2/RP=V^2/R doubles to 120 W120\ \text{W}. The heater therefore gives twice the power (it also draws twice the current, 10 A instead of 5 A).

A 50 Ah battery can supply a current of 5 A for 10 h. What total energy can be supplied by a 12 V, 60 Ah battery if its internal resistance is negligible?

Answer

The battery capacity is the charge it can deliver:

Q=60 Ah=60×3600 C=2.16×105 CQ=60\ \text{Ah}=60\times3600\ \text{C}=2.16\times10^{5}\ \text{C}

With negligible internal resistance the terminal voltage stays at 12 V12\ \text{V}, so

W=QV=2.16×105×12=2.59×106 JW=QV=2.16\times10^{5}\times12=2.59\times10^{6}\ \text{J}

This is 720 Wh=0.72 kWh720\ \text{Wh}=0.72\ \text{kWh} (equivalently 12 V×5 A×12 h12\ \text{V}\times5\ \text{A}\times12\ \text{h}).

Can the terminal potential difference be greater than the emf of a cell?

Answer

Yes. When a cell is being charged, current is driven through it against its emf, so the terminal potential difference is

V=E+IrV=E+Ir

which is greater than EE. When the cell is discharging, V=E−IrV=E-Ir, which is less than EE. On open circuit (I=0I=0), V=EV=E.

(a) State Ohm's law. (b) You are given nn wires each of resistance r Ωr\ \Omega. What is the ratio of maximum to minimum resistance that can be obtained from these wires?

Answer

(a) Ohm's law: at constant temperature, the current through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across its ends, V∝IV\propto I or V=IRV=IR.

(b) The maximum resistance comes from connecting all nn wires in series: Rmax=nrR_{max}=nr.

The minimum resistance comes from connecting all of them in parallel: 1Rmin=nr\dfrac{1}{R_{min}}=\dfrac{n}{r}, so Rmin=rnR_{min}=\dfrac{r}{n}.

RmaxRmin=nrr/n=n2\frac{R_{max}}{R_{min}}=\frac{nr}{r/n}=n^2

The ratio is n2:1n^2:1.

A piece of wire of resistance R is bent through 180∘^\circ at mid-point and the two halves are twisted together. What is the resistance of the wire thus formed? (a) R/4 (b) R/2 (c) R (d) 2R

Answer

(a) R/4

The wire is bent at its midpoint, so it forms two equal halves, each of resistance R/2R/2. When the two halves are twisted together, they are connected in parallel. Hence the equivalent resistance is

Req=(R/2)(R/2)R/2+R/2=R4.R_{\text{eq}} = \frac{(R/2)(R/2)}{R/2 + R/2} = \frac{R}{4}.

(a) What is it meant by power of a heater is 2 kW? (b) Calculate the resistance of the above mentioned heater when it is connected to 220V source. (c) Suggest what changes must be done to the heater so that it gives more heat. Justify your answer.

Answer

(a) It means the heater converts 2000 J2000\ \text{J} of electrical energy into heat every second (2 kW=2000 J s−12\ \text{kW}=2000\ \text{J s}^{-1}) at its rated voltage.

(b)

P=V2R ⇒ R=V2P=22022000=484002000=24.2 ΩP=\frac{V^{2}}{R}\ \Rightarrow\ R=\frac{V^{2}}{P}=\frac{220^{2}}{2000}=\frac{48400}{2000}=24.2\ \Omega

(c) The heat produced per second is P=V2RP=\dfrac{V^{2}}{R}. At the fixed 220 V220\ \text{V} supply, power is inversely proportional to resistance, so the resistance of the heating element should be decreased, for example by using a shorter or thicker nichrome wire (since R=ρl/AR=\rho l/A). A smaller resistance draws more current, which gives more heat per second.

Suggest what changes must be done to the heater so that it gives more heat. Justify your answer.

Answer

Change: decrease the resistance of the heating element, by using a shorter or thicker nichrome wire.

Justification: The heat produced is

H=V2R tH=\frac{V^{2}}{R}\,t

At a fixed supply voltage, H∝1RH\propto\dfrac{1}{R}, so a smaller resistance gives more heat in the same time. Since R=ρlAR=\dfrac{\rho l}{A}, resistance is lowered by reducing the length ll or increasing the cross-sectional area AA. The current drawn rises, and with it the heating effect I2RtI^{2}Rt.
