Which of the following best defines digital skills?
(a) The ability to repair and maintain computer hardware (b) The ability to use digital devices, communication applications, and networks to access and manage information (c) The ability to write computer programs in high-level languages (d) The ability to memorize keyboard shortcuts for common software

Answer

(b) The ability to use digital devices, communication applications, and networks to access and manage information

Explain the concept of digital skills. Describe any four ways in which digital skills function as life skills in the 21st century.

Answer

Digital skills refer to the abilities needed to use digital devices, applications, networks and online platforms effectively, safely and responsibly. They include basic computer and mobile operation, use of the internet and software, digital communication, information search and evaluation, digital content creation, online safety and privacy, and the ethical use of technology. In the 21st century, where education, employment, banking, health, governance and social interaction have become increasingly digital, these skills are no longer optional technical abilities but essential competencies for everyday living. Because they help a person solve daily problems, communicate, learn and participate in society, digital skills function as life skills — the abilities that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of daily life. Four ways in which they function as life skills are described below.

1. As a tool for learning and self-development. Digital skills enable a person to search for information, use e-learning platforms, watch instructional videos, join online classes and access digital libraries. This supports self-directed and lifelong learning, allowing a person to acquire new knowledge and upgrade skills at any age. For example, a farmer can learn improved farming techniques from online videos, and a student can prepare for examinations using free online courses. In this way, digital skills directly serve the life skill of effective learning.

2. As a means of communication and social interaction. Digital skills allow people to connect through email, messaging apps, video calls and social media, crossing the barriers of distance and time. This helps maintain family and social relationships, share information quickly, and cooperate in groups. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, digital skills allowed students to continue classes and families to stay in touch through video calls. Thus they strengthen the life skills of communication, interpersonal relationship and empathy.

3. As a source of livelihood and economic opportunity. Digital skills function as occupational life skills by enabling people to earn a living. They allow a person to apply for jobs online, work from home, run online businesses, use digital banking and mobile payment systems, and sell products through e-commerce. A person with digital skills can also work as a freelancer, content creator or online tutor. This promotes financial independence, self-employment and the life skill of managing money and resources wisely.

4. As a means of safety, awareness and responsible citizenship. Digital skills include the ability to protect one's privacy, create strong passwords, recognise online fraud, cyberbullying and fake news, and use social media responsibly. They also allow citizens to access government services online, pay taxes and bills digitally, and take part in public discussion and civic activities. This develops the life skills of critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and responsible citizenship, which are vital in the digital age.

Conclusion: Digital skills are thus not merely technical skills but practical life skills. They empower individuals to learn, communicate, earn, stay safe and participate in society, making them indispensable for survival, adjustment and success in the 21st century.

What is meant by general research skills? Explain the major stages of a general research process in brief.

Answer

General research skills refer to the basic abilities a person needs to carry out research systematically — that is, the capacity to identify a problem, collect relevant information from reliable sources, analyse it, and draw valid conclusions. They include skills of observation, questioning, note-taking, data collection, classification, analysis, interpretation and reporting. Such skills are "general" because they are not limited to one subject; they are useful in social studies, science, business, journalism and everyday decision-making.

Major stages of a general research process:

  1. Identifying and defining the problem: The researcher selects a topic, narrows it down and states the objectives and research questions clearly. A well-defined problem gives direction to the whole study.

  2. Reviewing related literature: Existing books, articles, reports and previous studies are studied to know what has already been done, to avoid repetition and to build a theoretical base.

  3. Formulating hypotheses or research questions: Tentative statements or questions are framed that the study will test or answer.

  4. Designing the research: The researcher decides the method (survey, case study, experiment, etc.), the population and sample, the tools of data collection (questionnaire, interview, observation) and the plan of analysis.

  5. Collecting data: Primary data are gathered from the field through the selected tools, and secondary data from published sources. Care is taken to keep the data accurate, complete and unbiased.

  6. Organising and analysing data: Collected data are edited, coded, classified and presented in tables, graphs and charts. Statistical or qualitative techniques are used to find patterns, relationships and trends.

  7. Interpreting results and drawing conclusions: The findings are explained in the light of the objectives and hypotheses, and conclusions are drawn.

  8. Reporting and disseminating findings: The final report is written in a clear format (introduction, methodology, findings, conclusion, recommendations) and shared with concerned persons or institutions.

In short, the general research process moves from problem identification to data collection, analysis and reporting, and these stages are interlinked rather than strictly separate.

Define digital skills and general research skills. Discuss how the integration of digital skills and general research skills helps students and ordinary citizens solve real-life problems and make informed decisions. Support your answer with relevant examples.

Answer

Digital Skills and General Research Skills

Digital skills are the abilities needed to use digital devices, software, the internet and online platforms safely, critically and effectively. They include operating computers and smartphones, searching the internet, using applications such as word processors, spreadsheets and email, communicating through digital media, protecting one's data and privacy, and evaluating online content for its reliability.

General research skills are the abilities needed to identify a problem or question, collect relevant information from different sources (books, journals, newspapers, interviews, observation, field visits), analyse and verify that information, and draw conclusions and present findings. They include observation, questioning, note-taking, comparison, critical thinking, data analysis and honest reporting.

How the Integration Helps

Digital skills supply the tools; research skills supply the method and judgement. Used together, they turn raw online information into useful knowledge. This combination helps in the following ways:

1. Finding information quickly and judging it correctly. The internet offers unlimited information, but much of it is false. Research skills teach a student to check the source, date and author before trusting it. For example, a Class 11 student preparing a project on climate change can download reports from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, compare them with the textbook and news reports, and reject exaggerated social-media claims.

2. Solving practical problems with data. Digital tools such as Google Forms, spreadsheets and online maps allow quick collection and analysis of data, while research skills decide what data is needed and how to interpret it. A youth club in a flood-prone settlement, for instance, can survey households through Google Forms, mark vulnerable spots on Google Maps, and present the findings to the ward office to demand an embankment.

3. Making informed decisions in daily life. A farmer can check the weather forecast and market prices on a government portal or mobile app and decide when to plant and where to sell. A consumer can compare prices and read reviews before buying a mobile phone. A patient's family can verify information about a disease from a hospital website instead of believing rumours.

4. Checking facts and participating in civic life. Citizens can read the national budget, local government plans and audit reports online, and use research skills to question where public money is spent. During elections or disasters, they can fact-check viral messages before forwarding them, which reduces panic and rumour.

5. Education, employment and enterprise. Students use digital libraries and online courses to learn, and research skills help them select genuine ones. Job seekers can verify whether a foreign employment agency is legally registered, and small entrepreneurs can study the market online before starting a business.

6. Safety and ethics. Integrated skills also make people aware of cybercrime, phishing, identity theft and plagiarism, so they use technology responsibly and give credit to others' work.

Conclusion

Digital skills without research skills lead to blind copying of unreliable information, while research skills without digital skills limit a person to slow and narrow sources. Their integration develops independent, critical and responsible learners and citizens who can investigate problems, verify facts, take sound decisions and contribute to the development of their family, community and nation.
