The energy of a photon is given by E=hfE=hf. Find the dimension and unit of Planck's constant hh, where ff is the frequency of radiation.

Answer

From E=hfE=hf, h=Efh=\dfrac Ef.

Dimension of energy: [E]=ML2T−2[E]=\text{ML}^2\text{T}^{-2}; of frequency: [f]=T−1[f]=\text{T}^{-1}. So

[h]=ML2T−2T−1=ML2T−1[h]=\frac{\text{ML}^2\text{T}^{-2}}{\text{T}^{-1}}=\text{ML}^2\text{T}^{-1}

SI unit: J s\text{J s} (equivalently kg m2s−1\text{kg m}^2\text{s}^{-1}), the same as angular momentum. Its value is 6.63×10−346.63\times10^{-34} J s.

A value for the acceleration of free fall on Earth is given as (20±2) m/s2(20\pm2)\ \text{m/s}^2. Which statement is correct? (a) The value is accurate but not precise (b) The value is both accurate and precise (c) The value is neither precise nor accurate (d) The value is precise but not accurate.

Answer

(d) The value is precise but not accurate.

The true value of gg is about 9.8 m/s29.8\ \text{m/s}^2, far outside the quoted range 1818 to 22 m/s222\ \text{m/s}^2, so the result is not accurate. The uncertainty of ±2\pm2 is small compared with 20 (about 10%), so the value is fairly precise.

Dimensional formula of power is (a) [ML2T3][ML^2T^3] (b) [MLT−2][MLT^{-2}] (c) [ML2T−2][ML^2T^{-2}] (d) [ML2T−3][ML^2T^{-3}]

Answer

(d) [ML2T−3][ML^2T^{-3}]

Power =worktime=[ML2T−2][T]=[ML2T−3]=\dfrac{\text{work}}{\text{time}}=\dfrac{[ML^2T^{-2}]}{[T]}=[ML^2T^{-3}].

A metre rule is used to measure the length of a piece of string in a certain experiment. It is found to be 20 cm long to the nearest millimeter. How should this result be recorded in a table of results? (a) 0.2000m (b) 0.200m (c) 0.20m (d) 0.2m

Answer

(b) 0.200 m

The reading is 20 cm to the nearest millimetre, i.e. 20.0 cm±0.1 cm20.0\ \text{cm} \pm 0.1\ \text{cm}. Converting to metres gives 0.200 m0.200\ \text{m}, and the result must be written with three decimal places so that the last digit (the millimetre place) is retained and the precision of the measurement is not lost.

Is a dimensionally correct equation necessarily a correct physical relation? Justify your answer with one example.

Answer

No. A dimensionally correct equation need not be physically correct. Dimensional analysis cannot detect dimensionless constants (such as 12\tfrac12 or 2π2\pi), and it cannot distinguish between quantities that have the same dimensions.

Example: the equation s=ut+at2s=ut+at^2 is dimensionally consistent, since each term has dimension [L][L]. But the correct relation is s=ut+12at2s=ut+\tfrac12at^2, so the first is wrong. Similarly, K=mv2K=mv^2 is dimensionally consistent but incorrect, as the true kinetic energy is 12mv2\tfrac12mv^2.

Dimensional correctness is only a necessary condition, not a sufficient one.
