Find from first principles, the derivative of (bx−a)n(bx-a)^n.

Similar questions: Derivative of sqrt(2-3x) from first principles (2074 (2017) · NEB Grade XI 116 'A')

Answer

Let f(x)=(bx−a)nf(x)=(bx-a)^n with nn a positive integer, and write u=bx−au=bx-a. By definition,

f′(x)=lim⁡h→0f(x+h)−f(x)h=lim⁡h→0(u+bh)n−unh.f'(x)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{f(x+h)-f(x)}{h}=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{(u+bh)^n-u^n}{h}.

Expand by the binomial theorem:

(u+bh)n=un+nun−1(bh)+(n2)un−2(bh)2+⋯+(bh)n.(u+bh)^n=u^n+nu^{n-1}(bh)+\binom n2u^{n-2}(bh)^2+\cdots+(bh)^n.

So

f′(x)=lim⁡h→0nbhun−1+(n2)b2h2un−2+⋯+bnhnh=lim⁡h→0[nbun−1+(n2)b2hun−2+⋯+bnhn−1].f'(x)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{nbhu^{n-1}+\binom n2b^2h^2u^{n-2}+\cdots+b^nh^n}{h} =\lim_{h\to0}\left[nbu^{n-1}+\binom n2b^2hu^{n-2}+\cdots+b^nh^{n-1}\right].

Every term containing hh vanishes as h→0h\to0, leaving

ddx(bx−a)n=nb (bx−a)n−1.\frac{d}{dx}(bx-a)^n=nb\,(bx-a)^{n-1}.

Write the criteria for the function y=f(x)y=f(x) to have the local maxima and local minima at a point. Find the local maxima and local minima of f(x)=2x3−15x2+36x+10f(x)=2x^3-15x^2+36x+10. Also find the point of inflection.

Similar questions: Local maxima and minima of 4x^3-15x^2+12x+7 (2074 (2017) · NEB Grade XI 116 'A')

Answer

Criteria. Let ff be differentiable at x=cx=c.

  • Local maximum at x=cx=c: f′(c)=0f'(c)=0 and f′′(c)<0f''(c)<0.
  • Local minimum at x=cx=c: f′(c)=0f'(c)=0 and f′′(c)>0f''(c)>0.

(If f′(c)=0f'(c)=0 and f′′(c)=0f''(c)=0, use the sign change of f′f' around cc.)

Extrema of f(x)=2x3−15x2+36x+10f(x)=2x^3-15x^2+36x+10.

f′(x)=6x2−30x+36=6(x−2)(x−3),f′′(x)=12x−30.f'(x)=6x^2-30x+36=6(x-2)(x-3),\qquad f''(x)=12x-30.

Setting f′(x)=0f'(x)=0 gives x=2x=2 or x=3x=3.

  • At x=2x=2: f′′(2)=−6<0f''(2)=-6<0, so a local maximum, with f(2)=16−60+72+10=38f(2)=16-60+72+10=38.
  • At x=3x=3: f′′(3)=6>0f''(3)=6>0, so a local minimum, with f(3)=54−135+108+10=37f(3)=54-135+108+10=37.

Local maximum value =38=38 at x=2x=2; local minimum value =37=37 at x=3x=3.

Point of inflection. f′′(x)=0⇒x=52f''(x)=0\Rightarrow x=\dfrac52. Since f′′f'' changes sign there (f′′′(x)=12≠0f'''(x)=12\ne0), it is a point of inflection:

f ⁣(52)=2⋅1258−15⋅254+36⋅52+10=1254−3754+90+10=752.f\!\left(\tfrac52\right)=2\cdot\frac{125}{8}-15\cdot\frac{25}{4}+36\cdot\frac52+10=\frac{125}{4}-\frac{375}{4}+90+10=\frac{75}{2}.

Point of inflection: (52,752)\left(\dfrac52,\dfrac{75}2\right).

Find from first principles, the derivative of 2−3x\sqrt{2-3x}.

Similar questions: Derivative of (bx-a)^n from first principles (2076 (2019) · NEB Grade XI 116 'B')

Answer

Let f(x)=2−3xf(x)=\sqrt{2-3x}. By the definition,

f′(x)=lim⁡h→0f(x+h)−f(x)h=lim⁡h→02−3x−3h−2−3xh.f'(x)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{f(x+h)-f(x)}{h}=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{\sqrt{2-3x-3h}-\sqrt{2-3x}}{h}.

Multiply numerator and denominator by the conjugate 2−3x−3h+2−3x\sqrt{2-3x-3h}+\sqrt{2-3x}:

f′(x)=lim⁡h→0(2−3x−3h)−(2−3x)h(2−3x−3h+2−3x)=lim⁡h→0−3hh(2−3x−3h+2−3x).f'(x)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{(2-3x-3h)-(2-3x)}{h\left(\sqrt{2-3x-3h}+\sqrt{2-3x}\right)}=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{-3h}{h\left(\sqrt{2-3x-3h}+\sqrt{2-3x}\right)}.

Cancel hh and let h→0h\to0:

f′(x)=−322−3x.f'(x)=\frac{-3}{2\sqrt{2-3x}}.

So ddx2−3x=−322−3x\dfrac{d}{dx}\sqrt{2-3x}=-\dfrac{3}{2\sqrt{2-3x}}.

List the criteria for a function y=f(x)y=f(x), to have the local maxima and local minima at a point. Find the local maxima and local minima of f(x)=4x3−15x2+12x+7f(x)=4x^3-15x^2+12x+7.

Similar questions: Local maxima, minima and inflection of 2x^3-15x^2+36x+10 (2076 (2019) · NEB Grade XI 116 'B')

Answer

Criteria. Let y=f(x)y=f(x) be differentiable at x=ax=a.

  1. First derivative test: f′(a)=0f'(a)=0 is necessary. If f′f' changes sign from ++ to −- as xx passes through aa, there is a local maximum at aa; if f′f' changes from −- to ++, there is a local minimum.
  2. Second derivative test: if f′(a)=0f'(a)=0 and f′′(a)<0f''(a)<0, then ff has a local maximum at aa; if f′(a)=0f'(a)=0 and f′′(a)>0f''(a)>0, then ff has a local minimum at aa. (If f′′(a)=0f''(a)=0 the test fails and the first derivative test is used.)

Application. f(x)=4x3−15x2+12x+7f(x)=4x^3-15x^2+12x+7.

f′(x)=12x2−30x+12=6(2x2−5x+2)=6(2x−1)(x−2).f'(x)=12x^2-30x+12=6(2x^2-5x+2)=6(2x-1)(x-2).

Setting f′(x)=0f'(x)=0 gives x=12x=\dfrac12 and x=2x=2.

f′′(x)=24x−30.f''(x)=24x-30.

At x=12x=\dfrac12: f′′=12−30=−18<0f''=12-30=-18<0, so there is a local maximum.

f ⁣(12)=4⋅18−15⋅14+12⋅12+7=12−154+6+7=394.f\!\left(\tfrac12\right)=4\cdot\tfrac18-15\cdot\tfrac14+12\cdot\tfrac12+7=\tfrac12-\tfrac{15}{4}+6+7=\tfrac{39}{4}.

At x=2x=2: f′′=48−30=18>0f''=48-30=18>0, so there is a local minimum.

f(2)=32−60+24+7=3.f(2)=32-60+24+7=3.

Hence the local maximum value is 394\dfrac{39}{4} at x=12x=\dfrac12, and the local minimum value is 33 at x=2x=2.

Determine the interval in which the function f(x)=12x2−xf(x)=\dfrac12x^2-x is increasing or decreasing.

Answer

f(x)=12x2−xf(x)=\dfrac12x^2-x, so f′(x)=x−1f'(x)=x-1.

  • f′(x)>0f'(x)>0 when x>1x>1, so ff is increasing on (1,∞)(1,\infty).
  • f′(x)<0f'(x)<0 when x<1x<1, so ff is decreasing on (−∞,1)(-\infty,1).

At x=1x=1, f′(1)=0f'(1)=0, which is the turning point (minimum, f(1)=−12f(1)=-\tfrac12).

Given f(x)={3−x,0≤x<32−3+x,x≥32f(x)=\begin{cases}3-x,&0\le x<\dfrac32\\-3+x,&x\ge\dfrac32\end{cases}
Test f(x)f(x) for continuity at x=32x=\dfrac32. If f(x)f(x) is not continuous at x=32x=\dfrac32, how would you make it continuous?

Answer

Left-hand limit: lim⁡x→32−f(x)=lim⁡x→32−(3−x)=3−32=32.\lim_{x\to\frac32^-}f(x)=\lim_{x\to\frac32^-}(3-x)=3-\frac32=\frac32.

Right-hand limit: lim⁡x→32+f(x)=lim⁡x→32+(−3+x)=−3+32=−32.\lim_{x\to\frac32^+}f(x)=\lim_{x\to\frac32^+}(-3+x)=-3+\frac32=-\frac32.

Value at the point: f ⁣(32)=−3+32=−32f\!\left(\tfrac32\right)=-3+\tfrac32=-\tfrac32.

Since 32≠−32\dfrac32\ne-\dfrac32, the left and right limits differ, so lim⁡x→3/2f(x)\lim_{x\to3/2}f(x) does not exist. Hence f(x)f(x) is not continuous at x=32x=\dfrac32; it has a jump discontinuity.

Making it continuous. Because the limit does not exist, the discontinuity cannot be removed by merely redefining the value f(3/2)f(3/2). We must change one of the pieces so that both one-sided limits agree. For example, if the first piece is changed to −x-x (that is, k−xk-x with k−32=−32k-\tfrac32=-\tfrac32, so k=0k=0), then the left limit becomes −32-\tfrac32, which equals the right limit and f ⁣(32)f\!\left(\tfrac32\right), and the function is continuous at x=32x=\tfrac32.

Evaluate: lim⁡x→2x−6−x2x−2\displaystyle\lim_{x\to2}\frac{\sqrt{x}-\sqrt{6-x^2}}{x-2}
OR
A function f(x)f(x) is defined as follows: f(x)={2x+3,x<14,x=16x−1,x>1f(x)=\begin{cases}2x+3,&x<1\\4,&x=1\\6x-1,&x>1\end{cases} Is the function continuous at x=1x=1? If not, how can you make it continuous?

Answer

Limit. At x=2x=2 the expression is of the form 00\dfrac00. Multiply numerator and denominator by the conjugate x+6−x2\sqrt x+\sqrt{6-x^2}:

lim⁡x→2x−6−x2x−2=lim⁡x→2x−(6−x2)(x−2)(x+6−x2)=lim⁡x→2x2+x−6(x−2)(x+6−x2).\lim_{x\to2}\frac{\sqrt x-\sqrt{6-x^2}}{x-2}=\lim_{x\to2}\frac{x-(6-x^2)}{(x-2)\left(\sqrt x+\sqrt{6-x^2}\right)}=\lim_{x\to2}\frac{x^2+x-6}{(x-2)\left(\sqrt x+\sqrt{6-x^2}\right)}.

Since x2+x−6=(x+3)(x−2)x^2+x-6=(x+3)(x-2), cancel (x−2)(x-2):

=lim⁡x→2x+3x+6−x2=52+2=522=524.=\lim_{x\to2}\frac{x+3}{\sqrt x+\sqrt{6-x^2}}=\frac{5}{\sqrt2+\sqrt2}=\frac{5}{2\sqrt2}=\frac{5\sqrt2}{4}.

OR: continuity at x=1x=1.

Left limit: lim⁡x→1−(2x+3)=5\lim_{x\to1^-}(2x+3)=5.

Right limit: lim⁡x→1+(6x−1)=5\lim_{x\to1^+}(6x-1)=5.

So lim⁡x→1f(x)=5\lim_{x\to1}f(x)=5, but f(1)=4≠5f(1)=4\ne5. The limit exists but does not equal the function value, so ff is not continuous at x=1x=1.

It can be made continuous by redefining f(1)=5f(1)=5 (removable discontinuity).

Define different types of discontinuity of a function. Also write the condition for increasing, decreasing and concavity of function. (2+3)

Answer

Definitions of the types of discontinuity (2 marks)

A function ff is discontinuous at x=ax=a if it is not continuous there, i.e. if any one of the three conditions of continuity fails. The main types are:

  1. Removable discontinuity (discontinuity of the first kind): The limit lim⁡x→af(x)\lim_{x\to a} f(x) exists but is not equal to f(a)f(a), or f(a)f(a) is not defined. The gap can be removed by redefining f(a)f(a).
    Example: f(x)=x2−1x−1f(x)=\dfrac{x^2-1}{x-1} at x=1x=1.

  2. Jump discontinuity (discontinuity of the first kind): Both one-sided limits exist and are finite, but they are unequal, so lim⁡x→af(x)\lim_{x\to a} f(x) does not exist.
    Example: f(x)=[x]f(x)=[x] (greatest integer function) at every integer.

  3. Infinite discontinuity (discontinuity of the second kind): At least one of the one-sided limits is infinite (tends to ±∞\pm\infty).
    Example: f(x)=1xf(x)=\dfrac{1}{x} at x=0x=0.

  4. Oscillatory discontinuity (discontinuity of the second kind): The function oscillates infinitely and the limit fails to exist, though the values stay bounded.
    Example: f(x)=sin⁡1xf(x)=\sin\dfrac{1}{x} at x=0x=0.

Conditions for increasing, decreasing and concavity (3 marks)

Let ff be differentiable on an interval II.

Increasing:
ff is increasing on II if for x1<x2x_1<x_2 in II, f(x1)<f(x2)f(x_1)<f(x_2).
Condition: f′(x)>0f'(x)>0 for all x∈Ix\in I.
(If f′(x)≥0f'(x)\ge 0, ff is non-decreasing.)

Decreasing:
ff is decreasing on II if for x1<x2x_1<x_2 in II, f(x1)>f(x2)f(x_1)>f(x_2).
Condition: f′(x)<0f'(x)<0 for all x∈Ix\in I.
(If f′(x)≤0f'(x)\le 0, ff is non-increasing.)

Concavity:

  • ff is concave upward (convex) on II if f′′(x)>0f''(x)>0 for all x∈Ix\in I; the curve lies above its tangent.
  • ff is concave downward (concave) on II if f′′(x)<0f''(x)<0 for all x∈Ix\in I; the curve lies below its tangent.
  • A point where the concavity changes (i.e. f′′(x)=0f''(x)=0 or undefined and sign of f′′f'' changes) is a point of inflection.

Evaluate: ∫x2dxa6−x6\int \frac{x^2 dx}{\sqrt{a^6 - x^6}}

Answer

Let
u=x3⇒du=3x2 dx⇒x2 dx=du3u=x^3 \quad\Rightarrow\quad du=3x^2\,dx \quad\Rightarrow\quad x^2\,dx=\frac{du}{3}

Then,

∫x2 dxa6−x6=13∫dua6−u2\int \frac{x^2\,dx}{\sqrt{a^6-x^6}} =\frac13\int \frac{du}{\sqrt{a^6-u^2}}

Using ∫dua6−u2=sin⁡−1ua3+C\displaystyle \int \frac{du}{\sqrt{a^6-u^2}}=\sin^{-1}\frac{u}{a^3}+C,

=13sin⁡−1x3a3+C=\frac13\sin^{-1}\frac{x^3}{a^3}+C

Answer:

A decline in the price of good X by Rs. 5 causes an increase in its demand by 20 units to 50 units. The new price is X is 15. (i) Calculate elasticity of demand. (ii) The elasticity of demand is negative, what does it mean?

Answer

(i)
Original price = New price + decline = 15+5=Rs. 2015 + 5 = \text{Rs. }20
Original demand = New demand − increase = 50−20=3050 - 20 = 30 units

Ed=% change in quantity demanded% change in priceE_d=\frac{\%\text{ change in quantity demanded}}{\%\text{ change in price}}

% change in demand=2030×100=66.67%\%\text{ change in demand}=\frac{20}{30}\times 100=66.67\%

% change in price=−520×100=−25%\%\text{ change in price}=\frac{-5}{20}\times 100=-25\%

Ed=66.67−25=−2.67E_d=\frac{66.67}{-25}=-2.67

So, elasticity of demand is −2.67-2.67 (or 2.67 in absolute value).

(ii)
The negative elasticity means that price and quantity demanded move in opposite directions: when price falls, demand rises, and when price rises, demand falls. This confirms the law of demand. Since ∣Ed∣>1|E_d|>1, demand is relatively elastic.

  1. (a) Distinguish between derivative and anti-derivative of a function. Write their physical meanings and illustrate with example in your context. Find the differential coefficient of log⁡sin⁡xx\log_{\sin x} x with respect to xx. (1+2+2) (b) Find the area bounded by the yy-axis, the curve x2=4(y−2)x^2 = 4(y-2) and the line y=11y=11. (3)
Figure: Region bounded by y-axis, parabola x^2=4(y-2), and line y=11.

Answer

22. (a)

Derivative vs anti-derivative

DerivativeAnti-derivative
The instantaneous rate of change of f(x)f(x) with respect to xx, written f′(x)f'(x) or ddxf(x)\frac{d}{dx}f(x).A function F(x)F(x) with F′(x)=f(x)F'(x)=f(x), written ∫f(x) dx=F(x)+C\int f(x)\,dx=F(x)+C.
Obtained by differentiation.Obtained by integration, the reverse of differentiation.
Unique for a given differentiable function.Not unique: anti-derivatives differ by a constant CC.

Physical meaning. If s(t)s(t) is the position of a body, then dsdt\frac{ds}{dt} is its velocity and dvdt\frac{dv}{dt} its acceleration. Conversely, the anti-derivative of acceleration gives velocity, and the anti-derivative of velocity gives displacement.

Example. A bus leaving Kathmandu has displacement s(t)=5t2s(t)=5t^2 km after tt hours. Its velocity is v=dsdt=10tv=\frac{ds}{dt}=10t km/h and acceleration a=dvdt=10a=\frac{dv}{dt}=10 km/h2^2. Conversely, ∫10t dt=5t2+C\int 10t\,dt=5t^2+C, where CC is fixed by the starting position.

Differential coefficient of log⁡sin⁡xx\log_{\sin x}x. Let y=log⁡sin⁡xx=ln⁡xln⁡(sin⁡x)y=\log_{\sin x}x=\dfrac{\ln x}{\ln(\sin x)}. Then

dydx=1xln⁡(sin⁡x)−ln⁡x⋅cot⁡x[ln⁡(sin⁡x)]2=1xln⁡(sin⁡x)−ln⁡x cot⁡x[ln⁡(sin⁡x)]2.\frac{dy}{dx}=\frac{\frac1x\ln(\sin x)-\ln x\cdot\cot x}{\left[\ln(\sin x)\right]^2}=\frac{1}{x\ln(\sin x)}-\frac{\ln x\,\cot x}{\left[\ln(\sin x)\right]^2}.
