A projectile is projected with a velocity making an angle with the horizontal. Derive the relation for its trajectory. Also show the components of velocity at any point on the trajectory in a diagram.
Answer
Take the point of projection as the origin, with horizontal and vertically upward. The projectile is launched with speed at angle .
Initial components: , .
Horizontal motion (no acceleration):
Vertical motion (acceleration ):
Substituting :
This has the form , which is a parabola, so the path of a projectile is a parabola.
Velocity components at any point (time ):
- horizontal: (constant)
- vertical:
- resultant: , directed along the tangent to the path at angle with .
Diagram: draw a parabola rising from the origin at angle to the -axis, with the initial velocity drawn along the tangent at the origin and resolved into (along ) and (along ). At a general point P on the curve draw along the tangent, with its components horizontal and vertical (upward on the rising part, zero at the highest point, downward on the falling part).

From a flying aeroplane a body should be dropped in advance to hit the target. Why?
Answer
When the body is released it already has the horizontal velocity of the aeroplane. After release it moves as a projectile: it keeps moving forward horizontally at that speed while falling under gravity, so it follows a parabolic path and lands ahead of the point of release. If it were dropped exactly above the target, it would overshoot. So it must be released early, when the plane is still a horizontal distance short of the target, to hit it.

In the entire path of a projectile, which of the following quantity remains constant?
(a) vertical component of velocity
(b) horizontal component of velocity
(c) kinetic energy
(d) potential energy
Answer
(b) horizontal component of velocity
With air resistance neglected, the only force is the vertical weight, so there is no horizontal acceleration and stays constant. The vertical component, kinetic energy and potential energy all change along the path.

A baseball is thrown towards a player with an initial speed of 20 m/s and at angle with the horizontal. At the moment the ball is thrown, the player is 50 m far from the thrower. At what speed and in what direction must the player run to catch the ball at the same height at which it was released?
Answer
The ball returns to its release height after one range and one time of flight .
The player stands 50 m from the thrower, but the ball lands only 40.8 m away. The player must therefore cover
towards the thrower, in time :
So the player must run at about m/s along the line towards the thrower (back towards where the ball was thrown from).

An aircraft is at rest at one end of a runway which is 2.2 km long. The aircraft accelerates along the runway with an acceleration of until it reaches its take-off speed of 75 m/s. Calculate
(a) the time taken to reach take-off speed.
(b) the distance travelled in this time.
(c) Just as the aircraft reaches take-off speed a warning light comes on. The maximum possible deceleration of the aircraft is and 2.5 s elapses before the pilot takes any action, during which time the aircraft continues at its take-off speed. Determine whether or not the aircraft can be brought to rest in the remaining length of the runway.
Answer
(a) From with :
(b)
(c) The runway left is m.
During the 2.5 s reaction time the aircraft keeps going at 75 m/s:
Then braking from 75 m/s to rest at :
Total stopping distance m, which is less than 1075 m. Yes, the aircraft can be stopped on the runway, with about 184 m to spare.

Define the terms time of flight and horizontal range of a projectile.
Answer
Time of flight: the total time for which a projectile remains in the air, from the instant of projection until it returns to the level of projection. For projection speed at angle , .
Horizontal range: the horizontal distance between the point of projection and the point where the projectile returns to the same horizontal level. .

A ball is thrown horizontally from the top of a tower of height 24 m which is surrounded by level ground.
(i) Calculate the time taken from when the ball is thrown to when it first hits the ground. Assume air resistance is negligible.
(ii) The ball hits the ground 27 m from the base of the tower. Calculate the speed at which the ball is thrown.
Answer
(i) Vertically the ball starts with zero velocity, so it falls freely through m:
(ii) The horizontal velocity stays constant (no air resistance), so :
The ball was thrown at about .

An athlete makes a long jump and follows a projectile motion. Air resistance is negligible.
Which one of the following statements is true about the athlete?
(a) The athlete has a constant horizontal and vertical velocities.
(b) The athlete has a constant horizontal velocity and constant downward acceleration.
(c) The athlete has a constant upward acceleration followed by a constant downward acceleration.
(d) The athlete has a constant upward velocity followed by a constant downward velocity.
Answer
(b) The athlete has a constant horizontal velocity and constant downward acceleration.
In projectile motion the only force acting (air resistance being negligible) is weight, which acts vertically downward. So the horizontal velocity stays constant throughout the jump, while the vertical motion has a constant downward acceleration equal to .

A box at rest is accelerated by a rope attached with a motor as shown in the Fig 2.1. The velocity-time graph given below shows the pattern of its motion for 20 s.
(a) If the box is pulled with constant unbalanced force 10N. Show that the initial acceleration of the box is 2.5 ms, and calculate its mass.
(b) After 2.0 second the box is being pulled by a constant force 12 N. Determine the size of frictional forces acting on the box at this time.
(c) Determine the distance of the box travels along the ground at 8.0s.
Figure: Fig 2.1: Diagram of a box at rest accelerated by a rope attached to a motor, with a velocity-time graph for 20 s.
Answer
(a) From the velocity–time graph, the box speeds up uniformly from to in the first .
With the unbalanced force , Newton's second law gives
(b) After the graph is horizontal, so the velocity is constant and . The net force is therefore zero, and friction balances the pull:
(c) Distance in = area under the graph from to :

A boatman wants to take his boat to a point just opposite on the other bank of the river. In which direction should he row the boat? Explain with the help of a suitable diagram.
Answer
To reach the point directly opposite, the boat must have no net component of velocity along the river. The boatman should therefore row upstream, tilted at an angle to the line perpendicular to the bank.
Let be the boat's speed in still water and the speed of the river. The component of along the river (upstream) must cancel the river current:
Diagram: draw the river flowing to the right, the bank-to-bank line AB perpendicular to the banks, the river velocity along the river, the boat's heading pointing upstream at angle from AB, and the resultant velocity along AB. This works only if , and the crossing speed is .
