Find the truth value of the biconditional statement of pp and qq where pp represents '2 is an even number' and qq represents '4 is an even number'.

Answer

pp: "2 is an even number" is true, and qq: "4 is an even number" is true.

The biconditional p↔qp\leftrightarrow q ("2 is even if and only if 4 is even") is true when pp and qq have the same truth value. Here both are true, so p↔qp\leftrightarrow q is true.

If f:R→Rf:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} is defined by f(x)=2x−3f(x)=2x-3, find f−1f^{-1}.

Answer

Let y=f(x)=2x−3y=f(x)=2x-3. Solving for xx:

y+3=2x  ⇒  x=y+32.y+3=2x\;\Rightarrow\; x=\frac{y+3}{2}.

Interchanging the roles of xx and yy,

f−1(x)=x+32.f^{-1}(x)=\frac{x+3}{2}.

Check: f ⁣(x+32)=2⋅x+32−3=xf\!\left(\dfrac{x+3}{2}\right)=2\cdot\dfrac{x+3}{2}-3=x.

Test the even or odd nature and symmetricity of the function y=8x2y=8x^2.

Answer

Let f(x)=8x2f(x)=8x^2. Then

f(−x)=8(−x)2=8x2=f(x)for all x∈R.f(-x)=8(-x)^2=8x^2=f(x)\quad\text{for all }x\in\mathbb{R}.

So the function is even. The graph of an even function is symmetric about the yy-axis: the point (x,y)(x,y) lies on the curve if and only if (−x,y)(-x,y) does.

It is not odd, since f(−x)≠−f(x)f(-x)\neq -f(x) unless x=0x=0, so it is not symmetric about the origin.

Find the adjoint of the matrix (253−7)\begin{pmatrix}2&5\\3&-7\end{pmatrix}.

Answer

For A=(abcd)A=\begin{pmatrix}a&b\\c&d\end{pmatrix}, the adjoint is obtained by swapping the diagonal entries and changing the signs of the off-diagonal entries:

For any non-empty subsets AA, BB, CC of universal set UU, prove that: A−(B∪C)=(A−B)∩(A−C)A-(B\cup C)=(A-B)\cap(A-C).
OR
Define absolute value of a real number. Also prove that ∣x∣−∣y∣≤∣x+y∣|x|-|y|\le|x+y|, ∀x,y∈R\forall x,y\in\mathbb{R}.

Answer

Proof of A−(B∪C)=(A−B)∩(A−C)A-(B\cup C)=(A-B)\cap(A-C).

Let x∈A−(B∪C)x\in A-(B\cup C). Then x∈Ax\in A and x∉B∪Cx\notin B\cup C, so x∉Bx\notin B and x∉Cx\notin C. Thus x∈A−Bx\in A-B and x∈A−Cx\in A-C, i.e. x∈(A−B)∩(A−C)x\in(A-B)\cap(A-C). Hence

A−(B∪C)⊆(A−B)∩(A−C).A-(B\cup C)\subseteq(A-B)\cap(A-C).

Conversely, let x∈(A−B)∩(A−C)x\in(A-B)\cap(A-C). Then x∈Ax\in A, x∉Bx\notin B and x∉Cx\notin C. So x∉B∪Cx\notin B\cup C, and therefore x∈A−(B∪C)x\in A-(B\cup C). Hence

(A−B)∩(A−C)⊆A−(B∪C).(A-B)\cap(A-C)\subseteq A-(B\cup C).

Both inclusions hold, so A−(B∪C)=(A−B)∩(A−C)A-(B\cup C)=(A-B)\cap(A-C). ■\blacksquare

OR

The absolute value of a real number xx is

∣x∣={x,x≥0−x,x<0.|x|=\begin{cases}x,&x\ge0\\-x,&x<0.\end{cases}

Proof of ∣x∣−∣y∣≤∣x+y∣|x|-|y|\le|x+y|. By the triangle inequality ∣a+b∣≤∣a∣+∣b∣|a+b|\le|a|+|b| (which follows from ±a≤∣a∣\pm a\le|a|, ±b≤∣b∣\pm b\le|b|, giving ±(a+b)≤∣a∣+∣b∣\pm(a+b)\le|a|+|b|), take a=x+ya=x+y and b=−yb=-y:

∣x∣=∣(x+y)+(−y)∣≤∣x+y∣+∣−y∣=∣x+y∣+∣y∣.|x|=|(x+y)+(-y)|\le|x+y|+|-y|=|x+y|+|y|.

So ∣x∣−∣y∣≤∣x+y∣|x|-|y|\le|x+y| for all x,y∈Rx,y\in\mathbb{R}. ■\blacksquare

Sketch the graph of f(x)=(x−1)3f(x)=(x-1)^3 indicating its characteristics.

Answer

f(x)=(x−1)3f(x)=(x-1)^3 is the graph of y=x3y=x^3 shifted 1 unit to the right.

Characteristics

  • Domain =R=\mathbb{R}, range =R=\mathbb{R}.
  • xx-intercept: f(x)=0⇒x=1f(x)=0\Rightarrow x=1, i.e. (1,0)(1,0). yy-intercept: f(0)=−1f(0)=-1, i.e. (0,−1)(0,-1).
  • f′(x)=3(x−1)2≥0f'(x)=3(x-1)^2\ge0, so the function is increasing everywhere and has no maximum or minimum. At x=1x=1, f′(1)=0f'(1)=0, so the tangent there is horizontal.
  • f′′(x)=6(x−1)f''(x)=6(x-1) changes sign at x=1x=1, so (1,0)(1,0) is the point of inflection (concave down for x<1x<1, concave up for x>1x>1).
  • Neither even nor odd about the yy-axis or origin; it is symmetric about the point (1,0)(1,0).
  • One-one and onto, so it has an inverse f−1(x)=1+x3f^{-1}(x)=1+\sqrt[3]{x}.

Table of points

xx−1-100112233
f(x)f(x)−8-8−1-1001188

Plot these points and join them with a smooth S-shaped curve that rises from bottom-left to top-right, flattening momentarily at (1,0)(1,0).

Prove that: ∣a2+1abacabb2+1bcacbcc2+1∣=1+a2+b2+c2\begin{vmatrix}a^2+1&ab&ac\\ab&b^2+1&bc\\ac&bc&c^2+1\end{vmatrix}=1+a^2+b^2+c^2

Answer

Let Δ\Delta be the given determinant. Multiply R1,R2,R3R_1,R_2,R_3 by a,b,ca,b,c respectively and divide the whole by abcabc:

Δ=1abc∣a3+aa2ba2cab2b3+bb2cac2bc2c3+c∣.\Delta=\frac1{abc}\begin{vmatrix}a^3+a&a^2b&a^2c\\ab^2&b^3+b&b^2c\\ac^2&bc^2&c^3+c\end{vmatrix}.

Take aa out of C1C_1, bb out of C2C_2, cc out of C3C_3; the factor abcabc cancels:

Δ=∣a2+1a2a2b2b2+1b2c2c2c2+1∣.\Delta=\begin{vmatrix}a^2+1&a^2&a^2\\b^2&b^2+1&b^2\\c^2&c^2&c^2+1\end{vmatrix}.

Apply R1→R1+R2+R3R_1\to R_1+R_2+R_3. Every entry of the new first row becomes 1+a2+b2+c21+a^2+b^2+c^2:

Δ=(1+a2+b2+c2)∣111b2b2+1b2c2c2c2+1∣.\Delta=(1+a^2+b^2+c^2)\begin{vmatrix}1&1&1\\b^2&b^2+1&b^2\\c^2&c^2&c^2+1\end{vmatrix}.

Now C2→C2−C1C_2\to C_2-C_1 and C3→C3−C1C_3\to C_3-C_1:

Δ=(1+a2+b2+c2)∣100b210c201∣=(1+a2+b2+c2)⋅1.\Delta=(1+a^2+b^2+c^2)\begin{vmatrix}1&0&0\\b^2&1&0\\c^2&0&1\end{vmatrix}=(1+a^2+b^2+c^2)\cdot1.

Hence Δ=1+a2+b2+c2\Delta=1+a^2+b^2+c^2. ■\blacksquare

Find the equation whose roots are reciprocal of the roots of x2−x+1=0x^2-x+1=0.

Answer

Let α,β\alpha,\beta be the roots of x2−x+1=0x^2-x+1=0. The required equation has roots 1α,1β\dfrac1\alpha,\dfrac1\beta.

Here α+β=1\alpha+\beta=1 and αβ=1\alpha\beta=1. Then

sum=1α+1β=α+βαβ=1,product=1αβ=1.\text{sum}=\frac1\alpha+\frac1\beta=\frac{\alpha+\beta}{\alpha\beta}=1,\qquad \text{product}=\frac1{\alpha\beta}=1.

The equation is x2−(sum)x+product=0x^2-(\text{sum})x+\text{product}=0:

x2−x+1=0.x^2-x+1=0.

(Equivalently, put x=1yx=\dfrac1y in x2−x+1=0x^2-x+1=0 to get 1−y+y2=01-y+y^2=0.) The equation is unchanged: the roots are complex and the reciprocal of each is the other root.

Define function. Distinguish relation and function with example. Find the domain and range of f(x)=x2−2x−8f(x)=\sqrt{x^2-2x-8}, x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}.

Answer

Function. A function ff from a set AA to a set BB is a rule that assigns to each element x∈Ax\in A exactly one element f(x)∈Bf(x)\in B.

Relation vs function. A relation from AA to BB is any subset of A×BA\times B; an element of AA may be related to none, one or several elements of BB. A function is a special relation in which every element of AA has exactly one image.

Example. Let A={1,2,3}A=\{1,2,3\}, B={a,b,c}B=\{a,b,c\}.

  • R={(1,a),(1,b),(2,c)}R=\{(1,a),(1,b),(2,c)\} is a relation but not a function: 11 has two images and 33 has none.
  • f={(1,a),(2,a),(3,c)}f=\{(1,a),(2,a),(3,c)\} is a function: each element of AA has exactly one image.

Domain and range of f(x)=x2−2x−8f(x)=\sqrt{x^2-2x-8}.

Domain. We need x2−2x−8≥0x^2-2x-8\ge0, i.e. (x−4)(x+2)≥0(x-4)(x+2)\ge0, so x≤−2x\le-2 or x≥4x\ge4.

Domain=(−∞,−2]∪[4,∞).\text{Domain}=(-\infty,-2]\cup[4,\infty).

Range. Let y=x2−2x−8≥0y=\sqrt{x^2-2x-8}\ge0. Then y2=x2−2x−8y^2=x^2-2x-8, i.e. x2−2x−(8+y2)=0x^2-2x-(8+y^2)=0. For real xx, the discriminant must be non-negative:

4+4(8+y2)≥0,4+4(8+y^2)\ge0,

which holds for every real yy. Also x=1±9+y2x=1\pm\sqrt{9+y^2}, and for y≥0y\ge0 these satisfy x≤−2x\le-2 or x≥4x\ge4 (since 9+y2≥3\sqrt{9+y^2}\ge3). So every y≥0y\ge0 is attained (e.g. y=0y=0 at x=−2,4x=-2,4).

Range=[0,∞).\text{Range}=[0,\infty).

If AA, GG and HH are A.M., G.M. and H.M. respectively between any two unequal positive numbers then prove that (i) A>G>HA>G>H and (ii) G2=A×HG^2=A\times H.

Answer

Let the two unequal positive numbers be aa and bb. Then

A=a+b2,G=ab,H=2aba+b.A=\frac{a+b}{2},\qquad G=\sqrt{ab},\qquad H=\frac{2ab}{a+b}.

(ii) G2=A×HG^2=A\times H.

A×H=a+b2⋅2aba+b=ab=G2.A\times H=\frac{a+b}{2}\cdot\frac{2ab}{a+b}=ab=G^2.

(i) A>G>HA>G>H.

A>GA>G: A−G=a+b−2ab2=(a−b)22>0,A-G=\frac{a+b-2\sqrt{ab}}{2}=\frac{(\sqrt a-\sqrt b)^2}{2}>0, because a≠ba\ne b. So A>GA>G.

G>HG>H: From (ii), H=G2AH=\dfrac{G^2}{A}. Since A>G>0A>G>0, we have GA<1\dfrac G A<1, so H=G⋅GA<G.H=G\cdot\frac GA<G. So G>HG>H.

Therefore A>G>HA>G>H and G2=A×HG^2=A\times H. ■\blacksquare

Test the periodicity of the function f(x)=cos⁡πxf(x)=\cos\pi x and find its period.

Answer

A function is periodic if there is a positive TT with f(x+T)=f(x)f(x+T)=f(x) for all xx.

f(x+T)=cos⁡π(x+T)=cos⁡(πx+πT).f(x+T)=\cos\pi(x+T)=\cos(\pi x+\pi T).

This equals cos⁡πx\cos\pi x for all xx when πT=2π\pi T=2\pi, the smallest positive such value, i.e. T=2T=2. Indeed cos⁡(πx+2π)=cos⁡πx\cos(\pi x+2\pi)=\cos\pi x.

So f(x)=cos⁡πxf(x)=\cos\pi x is periodic, with period 22.

Find the real numbers xx and yy if (x−1)i+(y+1)=(1+i)(4−3i)(x-1)i+(y+1)=(1+i)(4-3i).

Answer

Right side: (1+i)(4−3i)=4−3i+4i−3i2=4+i+3=7+i(1+i)(4-3i)=4-3i+4i-3i^2=4+i+3=7+i.

Left side: (y+1)+(x−1)i(y+1)+(x-1)i.

Equating real and imaginary parts:

y+1=7⇒y=6,x−1=1⇒x=2.y+1=7\Rightarrow y=6,\qquad x-1=1\Rightarrow x=2.

Define conjunction of the statements. Prepare a truth table for the compound statement (p∧q)∧∼(p∨q)(p\wedge q)\wedge\sim(p\vee q). Draw the conclusion about the statement from the truth table.
OR
Solve the inequality ∣2x−1∣≥3|2x-1|\ge3 and draw its graph.

Answer

Conjunction. The conjunction of two statements pp and qq is the compound statement "pp and qq", written p∧qp\wedge q. It is true only when both pp and qq are true, and false in every other case.

Truth table of (p∧q)∧∼(p∨q)(p\wedge q)\wedge\sim(p\vee q):

ppqqp∧qp\wedge qp∨qp\vee q∼(p∨q)\sim(p\vee q)(p∧q)∧∼(p∨q)(p\wedge q)\wedge\sim(p\vee q)
TTTTFF
TFFTFF
FTFTFF
FFFFTF

Conclusion. The last column is false for every combination of truth values of pp and qq, so the statement is a contradiction (an absurdity). This is expected: p∧qp\wedge q needs both true, while ∼(p∨q)\sim(p\vee q) needs both false.

OR: ∣2x−1∣≥3|2x-1|\ge3.

∣2x−1∣≥3|2x-1|\ge3 means 2x−1≥32x-1\ge3 or 2x−1≤−32x-1\le-3.

2x−1≥3⇒x≥22x-1\ge3\Rightarrow x\ge2, and 2x−1≤−3⇒x≤−12x-1\le-3\Rightarrow x\le-1.

Solution set: x≤−1x\le-1 or x≥2x\ge2, i.e. (−∞,−1]∪[2,∞)(-\infty,-1]\cup[2,\infty).

Graph: on the number line draw closed (filled) dots at −1-1 and 22. Shade the line to the left of −1-1 and to the right of 22, leaving the part between −1-1 and 22 unshaded.

Draw the graph of the function f(x)=x−x2f(x)=x-x^2 indicating its characteristics.

Answer

f(x)=x−x2=−(x−12)2+14f(x)=x-x^2=-\left(x-\tfrac12\right)^2+\tfrac14 is a quadratic whose graph is a parabola.

Characteristics

  • The coefficient of x2x^2 is −1<0-1<0, so the parabola opens downward.
  • Vertex: (12,14)\left(\tfrac12,\tfrac14\right), which is the maximum point. The axis of symmetry is x=12x=\tfrac12.
  • xx-intercepts: x−x2=0⇒x(1−x)=0x-x^2=0\Rightarrow x(1-x)=0, so x=0x=0 and x=1x=1.
  • yy-intercept: f(0)=0f(0)=0, so the curve passes through the origin.
  • Domain =R=\mathbb{R}; range =(−∞,14]=\left(-\infty,\tfrac14\right].
  • ff is increasing for x<12x<\tfrac12 and decreasing for x>12x>\tfrac12.

Table of values

xx−1-10012\tfrac121122
f(x)f(x)−2-20014\tfrac1400−2-2

Graph. Plot these points on the axes and join them with a smooth curve. It rises from the lower left through (0,0)(0,0) to the peak (12,14)\left(\tfrac12,\tfrac14\right), then falls through (1,0)(1,0) to the lower right. It is symmetric about the line x=12x=\tfrac12.

Show that: ∣1xx21yy21zz2∣=(y−z)(z−x)(x−y)\begin{vmatrix}1&x&x^2\\1&y&y^2\\1&z&z^2\end{vmatrix}=(y-z)(z-x)(x-y)

Answer

Let Δ\Delta be the given determinant. Apply R1→R1−R2R_1\to R_1-R_2 and R2→R2−R3R_2\to R_2-R_3:

Δ=∣0x−yx2−y20y−zy2−z21zz2∣.\Delta=\begin{vmatrix}0&x-y&x^2-y^2\\0&y-z&y^2-z^2\\1&z&z^2\end{vmatrix}.

Take out the common factor (x−y)(x-y) from R1R_1 and (y−z)(y-z) from R2R_2:

Δ=(x−y)(y−z)∣01x+y01y+z1zz2∣.\Delta=(x-y)(y-z)\begin{vmatrix}0&1&x+y\\0&1&y+z\\1&z&z^2\end{vmatrix}.

Expand along the first column; only the entry 11 in the third row contributes, with sign ++:

Δ=(x−y)(y−z)∣1x+y1y+z∣=(x−y)(y−z)[(y+z)−(x+y)]=(x−y)(y−z)(z−x).\Delta=(x-y)(y-z)\begin{vmatrix}1&x+y\\1&y+z\end{vmatrix}=(x-y)(y-z)\big[(y+z)-(x+y)\big]=(x-y)(y-z)(z-x).

Hence Δ=(y−z)(z−x)(x−y)\Delta=(y-z)(z-x)(x-y).

If one root of the equation ax2+bx+c=0ax^2+bx+c=0 is the square of the other, prove that b3+a2c+ac2=3abcb^3+a^2c+ac^2=3abc.

Answer

Let the roots of ax2+bx+c=0ax^2+bx+c=0 be α\alpha and α2\alpha^2. Then

α+α2=−ba,α⋅α2=α3=ca.\alpha+\alpha^2=-\frac{b}{a},\qquad \alpha\cdot\alpha^2=\alpha^3=\frac{c}{a}.

Cube the first relation, using (m+n)3=m3+n3+3mn(m+n)(m+n)^3=m^3+n^3+3mn(m+n) with m=α, n=α2m=\alpha,\ n=\alpha^2:

(α+α2)3=α3+α6+3α3(α+α2).(\alpha+\alpha^2)^3=\alpha^3+\alpha^6+3\alpha^3(\alpha+\alpha^2).

Substitute α3=ca\alpha^3=\dfrac ca, α6=c2a2\alpha^6=\dfrac{c^2}{a^2} and α+α2=−ba\alpha+\alpha^2=-\dfrac ba:

−b3a3=ca+c2a2−3bca2.-\frac{b^3}{a^3}=\frac ca+\frac{c^2}{a^2}-\frac{3bc}{a^2}.

Multiply by a3a^3:

−b3=a2c+ac2−3abc⟹b3+a2c+ac2=3abc.-b^3=a^2c+ac^2-3abc\quad\Longrightarrow\quad b^3+a^2c+ac^2=3abc.

Show that f:R→Rf:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} defined by f(x)=cx+df(x)=cx+d where c(≠0)c(\ne0) and dd are real numbers, is one to one and onto. Find f−1(x)f^{-1}(x).

Answer

f:R→Rf:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}, f(x)=cx+df(x)=cx+d, with c≠0c\ne0.

One-one. Let x1,x2∈Rx_1,x_2\in\mathbb{R} with f(x1)=f(x2)f(x_1)=f(x_2). Then

cx1+d=cx2+d ⇒ cx1=cx2 ⇒ x1=x2(since c≠0).cx_1+d=cx_2+d\ \Rightarrow\ cx_1=cx_2\ \Rightarrow\ x_1=x_2\quad(\text{since }c\ne0).

Different inputs therefore give different outputs, so ff is one-one.

Onto. Let y∈Ry\in\mathbb{R} be any element of the codomain. Solve y=cx+dy=cx+d for xx:

x=y−dc,x=\frac{y-d}{c},

which is a real number because c≠0c\ne0. Also f ⁣(y−dc)=c⋅y−dc+d=yf\!\left(\dfrac{y-d}{c}\right)=c\cdot\dfrac{y-d}{c}+d=y. So every yy has a pre-image in R\mathbb{R}, and ff is onto.

Inverse. Since ff is one-one and onto, f−1f^{-1} exists. Put y=cx+dy=cx+d and solve for xx: x=y−dcx=\dfrac{y-d}{c}. Interchanging the names of the variables,

f−1(x)=x−dc.f^{-1}(x)=\frac{x-d}{c}.

Check: f(f−1(x))=c⋅x−dc+d=xf\big(f^{-1}(x)\big)=c\cdot\dfrac{x-d}{c}+d=x.

The sum of three numbers in A.P. is 36. When the numbers are increased by 1, 4, 43 respectively, the resulting numbers are in G.P. Find the numbers.

Answer

Let the three numbers in A.P. be a−d, a, a+da-d,\ a,\ a+d.

Sum =3a=36⇒a=12=3a=36\Rightarrow a=12. The numbers are 12−d, 12, 12+d12-d,\ 12,\ 12+d.

After increasing them by 1,4,431,4,43 respectively, we get 13−d, 16, 55+d13-d,\ 16,\ 55+d, which are in G.P. So the middle term squared equals the product of the others:

162=(13−d)(55+d)16^2=(13-d)(55+d)

256=715+13d−55d−d2=715−42d−d2256=715+13d-55d-d^2=715-42d-d^2

d2+42d−459=0 ⇒ (d−9)(d+51)=0 ⇒ d=9 or d=−51.d^2+42d-459=0\ \Rightarrow\ (d-9)(d+51)=0\ \Rightarrow\ d=9\ \text{or}\ d=-51.

Case d=9d=9: the numbers are 3, 12, 213,\ 12,\ 21. Check: 4, 16, 644,\ 16,\ 64 is a G.P. with ratio 44.

Case d=−51d=-51: the numbers are 63, 12, −3963,\ 12,\ -39. Check: 64, 16, 464,\ 16,\ 4 is a G.P. with ratio 14\tfrac14.

Hence the numbers are 3, 12, 213,\ 12,\ 21 (or, taking the other value of dd, 63, 12, −3963,\ 12,\ -39).

A function f(x)=x3f(x) = x^3 is given. Answer the following question for the function f(x)f(x). (i) What is the algebraic nature of the function? (ii) Write the name of the locus of the curve. (iii) Write the vertex of the function. (iv) Write any one property for sketching the curve. (v) Write the domain of the function.

Answer

(i) f(x)=x3f(x)=x^3 is a polynomial function (a cubic), so it is algebraic in nature.

(ii) The graph y=x3y=x^3 is a cubic curve (cubic parabola).

(iii) The curve has no vertex, because it has no turning point. It is strictly increasing, and the origin (0,0)(0,0) is its point of inflection.

(iv) One property for sketching: f(−x)=−f(x)f(-x)=-f(x), so the function is odd and the curve is symmetric about the origin. It passes through (0,0)(0,0) and lies in the first and third quadrants.

(v) Domain =R=\mathbb{R}, the set of all real numbers.

Compare the sum of nn terms of the series: 1+2a+3a2+4a3+…1 + 2a + 3a^2 + 4a^3 + \ldots and a+2a2+3a3+4a4+…a + 2a^2 + 3a^3 + 4a^4 + \ldots up to nn terms.

Answer

Let

S1=1+2a+3a2+…+nan−1,S2=a+2a2+3a3+…+nan.S_1 = 1 + 2a + 3a^2 + \ldots + na^{n-1},\qquad S_2 = a + 2a^2 + 3a^3 + \ldots + na^{n}.

Each term of S2S_2 is aa times the corresponding term of S1S_1, so S2=aS1S_2 = aS_1. Hence

S1−S2=(1−a)S1.S_1 - S_2 = (1-a)S_1.

To find S1S_1 explicitly, subtract S2S_2 from S1S_1 term by term:

S1−S2=1+a+a2+…+an−1−nan=1−an1−a−nan.S_1 - S_2 = 1 + a + a^2 + \ldots + a^{n-1} - na^n = \frac{1-a^n}{1-a} - na^n.

Therefore, for a≠1a \ne 1,

S1=1−(n+1)an+nan+1(1−a)2,S2=aS1=a−(n+1)an+1+nan+2(1−a)2.S_1 = \frac{1-(n+1)a^n + na^{n+1}}{(1-a)^2},\qquad S_2 = aS_1 = \frac{a-(n+1)a^{n+1}+na^{n+2}}{(1-a)^2}.

Comparison: S2=aS1S_2 = aS_1.

  • If a>1a>1 (with a>0a>0), then S2>S1S_2 > S_1.
  • If 0<a<10<a<1, then S2<S1S_2 < S_1.
  • If a=1a=1, both sums equal n(n+1)2\frac{n(n+1)}{2}.

a) In any triangle, prove that: (b+c)sin⁡A2=asin⁡(B2+C)(b + c) \sin \frac{A}{2} = a \sin(\frac{B}{2} + C) (3)
b) Express r⃗=(4,7)\vec{r} = (4, 7) as the linear combination of a⃗=(5,−4)\vec{a} = (5, -4) and b⃗=(−2,5)\vec{b} = (-2, 5) (2)

Answer

a) As typed, the right-hand side asin⁡(B2+C)a\sin\left(\frac B2+C\right) does not give an identity. For the right isosceles triangle with A=90∘A=90^\circ, B=C=45∘B=C=45^\circ, a=2a=\sqrt2, b=c=1b=c=1, the left side is 2sin⁡45∘=22\sin45^\circ=\sqrt2 but the right side is 2sin⁡67.5∘≠2\sqrt2\sin67.5^\circ\ne\sqrt2. The intended result is

(b+c)sin⁡A2=asin⁡(A2+C).(b+c)\sin\frac A2 = a\sin\left(\frac A2 + C\right).

Proof. By the sine rule, b=2Rsin⁡Bb=2R\sin B, c=2Rsin⁡Cc=2R\sin C, a=2Rsin⁡Aa=2R\sin A. Then

(b+c)sin⁡A2=2R(sin⁡B+sin⁡C)sin⁡A2.(b+c)\sin\frac A2 = 2R(\sin B+\sin C)\sin\frac A2.

Since sin⁡B+sin⁡C=2sin⁡B+C2cos⁡B−C2\sin B+\sin C = 2\sin\frac{B+C}{2}\cos\frac{B-C}{2} and B+C2=π2−A2\frac{B+C}{2}=\frac{\pi}{2}-\frac A2, we have sin⁡B+C2=cos⁡A2\sin\frac{B+C}{2}=\cos\frac A2. So

(b+c)sin⁡A2=2R⋅2sin⁡A2cos⁡A2cos⁡B−C2=2Rsin⁡Acos⁡B−C2=acos⁡B−C2.(b+c)\sin\frac A2 = 2R\cdot 2\sin\frac A2\cos\frac A2\cos\frac{B-C}{2} = 2R\sin A\cos\frac{B-C}{2} = a\cos\frac{B-C}{2}.

Now A2+C=π2−B+C2+C=π2−B−C2\frac A2 + C = \frac{\pi}{2}-\frac{B+C}{2}+C = \frac{\pi}{2}-\frac{B-C}{2}, so sin⁡(A2+C)=cos⁡B−C2\sin\left(\frac A2+C\right)=\cos\frac{B-C}{2}. Hence

(b+c)sin⁡A2=asin⁡(A2+C).(b+c)\sin\frac A2 = a\sin\left(\frac A2+C\right).

b) Let r⃗=xa⃗+yb⃗\vec r = x\vec a + y\vec b. Then (4,7)=x(5,−4)+y(−2,5)(4,7)=x(5,-4)+y(-2,5), giving

5x−2y=4,−4x+5y=7.5x-2y=4,\qquad -4x+5y=7.

The determinant is 25−8=1725-8=17.

x=4⋅5−(−2)⋅717=3417=2,y=5⋅7−(−4)⋅417=5117=3.x=\frac{4\cdot5-(-2)\cdot7}{17}=\frac{34}{17}=2,\qquad y=\frac{5\cdot7-(-4)\cdot4}{17}=\frac{51}{17}=3.

So r⃗=2a⃗+3b⃗\vec r = 2\vec a + 3\vec b.

Check: 2(5,−4)+3(−2,5)=(10−6, −8+15)=(4,7)2(5,-4)+3(-2,5)=(10-6,\,-8+15)=(4,7).

Group C (8×3=24)(8 \times 3 = 24)
  1. (a) The factor of expression a3−1a^3-1 are a−1a-1 and a2+a+1a^2+a+1. If a3−1=0a^3-1=0 (i) Find the possible values of aa and write the real and imaginary roots of aa. (2) (ii) Prove that ∣1aa2aa21a21a∣=0\begin{vmatrix} 1 & a & a^2 \\ a & a^2 & 1 \\ a^2 & 1 & a \end{vmatrix} = 0, Where aa is positive integer. (4) (iii) Verify that ∣x+y∣=∣x∣+∣y∣|x+y| = |x| + |y| with x=2x = 2 and y=−3y = -3 (2)

Answer

(i) From a3−1=0a^3-1=0 we get (a−1)(a2+a+1)=0(a-1)(a^2+a+1)=0.

a−1=0⇒a=1a-1=0 \Rightarrow a=1, and a2+a+1=0⇒a=−1±1−42=−1±i32a^2+a+1=0 \Rightarrow a=\dfrac{-1\pm\sqrt{1-4}}{2}=\dfrac{-1\pm i\sqrt3}{2}.

Possible values: 1, −1+i32, −1−i321,\ \dfrac{-1+i\sqrt3}{2},\ \dfrac{-1-i\sqrt3}{2}.

Real root: a=1a=1. Imaginary roots: −1+i32\dfrac{-1+i\sqrt3}{2} and −1−i32\dfrac{-1-i\sqrt3}{2}.

(ii) Let DD be the determinant. Expanding along the first row,

D=1(a2⋅a−1⋅1)−a(a⋅a−1⋅a2)+a2(a⋅1−a2⋅a2)D = 1(a^2\cdot a-1\cdot1) - a(a\cdot a-1\cdot a^2) + a^2(a\cdot1-a^2\cdot a^2)

=(a3−1)−a(0)+a2(a−a4)=a3−1+a3−a6=−(a3−1)2.= (a^3-1) - a(0) + a^2(a-a^4) = a^3-1+a^3-a^6 = -(a^3-1)^2.

Since a3−1=0a^3-1=0, D=−(0)2=0D=-(0)^2=0. For a positive integer aa this means a=1a=1, and the determinant with all entries 11 is clearly 00.

(iii) With x=2x=2, y=−3y=-3:

∣x+y∣=∣2−3∣=1,∣x∣+∣y∣=2+3=5.|x+y|=|2-3|=1,\qquad |x|+|y|=2+3=5.

So ∣x+y∣≠∣x∣+∣y∣|x+y|\ne|x|+|y|; equality does not hold here. What holds is the triangle inequality ∣x+y∣≤∣x∣+∣y∣|x+y|\le|x|+|y|, and indeed 1≤51\le5 (equality occurs only when xx and yy have the same sign).
