Find the compound interest on Rs. 10,000 for 3 years, the rate for the first year being 5% p.a., for the second year 6% p.a., and for the third year is 8% per annum.

Answer

Given: Principal (P) = Rs 10,000
Rates: R1=5%R_1 = 5\%, R2=6%R_2 = 6\%, R3=8%R_3 = 8\% p.a.
Time = 3 years

Formula: A=P(1+R1100)(1+R2100)(1+R3100)A = P\left(1+\frac{R_1}{100}\right)\left(1+\frac{R_2}{100}\right)\left(1+\frac{R_3}{100}\right)

Substitution: A=10000(1+5100)(1+6100)(1+8100)A = 10000\left(1+\frac{5}{100}\right)\left(1+\frac{6}{100}\right)\left(1+\frac{8}{100}\right) A=10000×1.05×1.06×1.08A = 10000 \times 1.05 \times 1.06 \times 1.08 A=12020.40A = 12020.40

Compound Interest: CI=A−P=12020.40−10000=2020.40CI = A - P = 12020.40 - 10000 = 2020.40

Therefore, the compound interest is Rs 2,020.40.

Find the present value of an annuity due of Rs.5,000 per year for 10 years at 9% p.a.

Answer

For an annuity due, payment is made at the beginning of each year.

PVdue=P[1+1−(1+i)−(n−1)i]PV_{\text{due}}=P\left[1+\frac{1-(1+i)^{-(n-1)}}{i}\right]

Given:
P=5000P=5000, n=10n=10, i=9%=0.09i=9\%=0.09

PV=5000[1+1−(1.09)−90.09]PV=5000\left[1+\frac{1-(1.09)^{-9}}{0.09}\right]

(1.09)−9=0.4604278(1.09)^{-9}=0.4604278

PV=5000[1+1−0.46042780.09]PV=5000\left[1+\frac{1-0.4604278}{0.09}\right]

PV=5000[1+5.995247]PV=5000[1+5.995247]

PV=5000×6.995247=34976.235PV=5000\times 6.995247=34976.235

PV≈Rs. 34,976.24\boxed{PV \approx \text{Rs. }34,976.24}

So, the present value of the annuity due is Rs. 34,976.24.

Write the formula of elasticity of supply (ese_s).

Answer

The formula for elasticity of supply is:

es=% change in quantity supplied% change in pricee_s = \frac{\%\ \text{change in quantity supplied}}{\%\ \text{change in price}}

Equivalently, using the ratio method:

es=ΔqΔp×pqe_s = \frac{\Delta q}{\Delta p} \times \frac{p}{q}

where qq is the original quantity supplied, pp is the original price, and Δq\Delta q, Δp\Delta p are the respective changes.

A sum doubles itself in 5 years by compound interest. How long does it take to be four times the sum?

Answer

Given: A sum doubles in 5 years at compound interest.

To find: Time to become four times the sum.

Solution:

Let the principal be PP and the rate be R%R\% per annum.

Step 1 — Use the doubling condition.

A=P(1+R100)nA = P\left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^n

When the sum doubles, A=2PA = 2P and n=5n = 5:

2P=P(1+R100)52P = P\left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^5

2=(1+R100)5... (i)2 = \left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^5 \quad \text{... (i)}

Step 2 — Apply the condition for four times the sum.

When the sum becomes four times, A=4PA = 4P and let the time be nn years:

4P=P(1+R100)n4P = P\left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^n

4=(1+R100)n4 = \left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^n

22=(1+R100)n... (ii)2^2 = \left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^n \quad \text{... (ii)}

Step 3 — Compare (i) and (ii).

From (i), 2=(1+R100)52 = \left(1 + \dfrac{R}{100}\right)^5. Squaring both sides:

22=(1+R100)102^2 = \left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^{10}

So (ii) becomes:

(1+R100)10=(1+R100)n\left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^{10} = \left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^n

∴n=10\therefore n = 10

Result: The sum becomes four times itself in 10 years.

(Note: Four times the sum means doubling twice, so the time is 2×5=102 \times 5 = 10 years.)

A loan of Rs. 2,00,000 is to be paid in 10 yearly installment. Find the amount of each installment if the rate of interest is 15%15\% p.a.

Answer

Given: Loan amount, P=Rs. 2,00,000P = \text{Rs. } 2,00,000
Number of installments, n=10n = 10 years
Rate of interest, i=15%=0.15i = 15\% = 0.15

Using the present value of an ordinary annuity formula:

P=R[1−(1+i)−ni]P = R\left[\frac{1-(1+i)^{-n}}{i}\right]

where RR is the yearly installment.

2,00,000=R[1−(1.15)−100.15]2,00,000 = R\left[\frac{1-(1.15)^{-10}}{0.15}\right] 2,00,000=R[1−0.24718470.15]2,00,000 = R\left[\frac{1-0.2471847}{0.15}\right] 2,00,000=R(5.0187686)2,00,000 = R(5.0187686) R=2,00,0005.0187686R = \frac{2,00,000}{5.0187686} R=39,850.41R = 39,850.41

Therefore, each yearly installment is approximately:

Rs. 39,850.41\boxed{\text{Rs. } 39,850.41}

So, the loan can be repaid by paying about Rs. 39,850.41 at the end of each year for 10 years.

A donor decides to grant scholarship to the student of medicine Rs. 50000 yearly for 5 years. What sum of money should be deposited in the bank with the compound rate of interest 8% per year so that the sum is sufficient to grant the scholarship at the end of each year.

Answer

The scholarship is paid at the end of each year, so the required deposit is the present value of an ordinary annuity.

Given: R=Rs 50,000R=\text{Rs }50{,}000, n=5n=5, i=8%=0.08i=8\%=0.08.

PV=R⋅1−(1+i)−ni=50000⋅1−(1.08)−50.08PV=R\cdot\frac{1-(1+i)^{-n}}{i}=50000\cdot\frac{1-(1.08)^{-5}}{0.08}

(1.08)5=1.469328 ⇒ (1.08)−5=0.680583(1.08)^5=1.469328\ \Rightarrow\ (1.08)^{-5}=0.680583

PV=50000×1−0.6805830.08=50000×3.99271=199,635.6PV=50000\times\frac{1-0.680583}{0.08}=50000\times 3.99271=199{,}635.6

Hence the donor should deposit about Rs 1,99,636.
