In Fraunhofer diffraction, the incident wavefront should be
(a) elliptical (b) plane (c) spherical (d) cylindrical

Answer

(b) plane

In Fraunhofer diffraction the source and screen are effectively at infinity (a convex lens is used), so the wavefront falling on the obstacle or slit is plane.

A diffraction grating has 400 lines/mm and is illuminated normally by a monochromatic light of wave length 6000 Å. The maximum number of diffraction maxima obtained will be
(a) 4.16 (b) 4 (c) 5 (d) 2.96

Answer

(b) 4

Grating element d=1400d = \dfrac{1}{400} mm =2.5×10−6= 2.5\times10^{-6} m. Since sin⁡θ≤1\sin\theta \le 1, nmax⁡≤dλ=2.5×10−66×10−7=4.17n_{\max} \le \dfrac{d}{\lambda} = \dfrac{2.5\times10^{-6}}{6\times10^{-7}} = 4.17. The order must be a whole number, so the highest order is 4. (Counting both sides and the central maximum, 2×4+1=92\times4 + 1 = 9 bright lines are seen.)

b) i) What is diffraction of light? (1)
ii) Calculate the width of central diffraction peak on a screen 4 m behind a 0.01 m slit illuminated by 600 nm light source. (2)

Answer

i) Diffraction of light: The bending of light around the edges of an obstacle or a narrow aperture, so that light spreads into the region of the geometrical shadow, is called diffraction of light.

ii) Width of central maximum

Given: D=4D = 4 m, slit width a=0.01a = 0.01 m, λ=600\lambda = 600 nm =6×10−7= 6\times10^{-7} m.

The first minima lie at y=±λDay = \pm\dfrac{\lambda D}{a}, so the width of the central maximum is

W=2λDa=2×6×10−7×40.01=4.8×10−4 mW = \frac{2\lambda D}{a} = \frac{2 \times 6\times10^{-7} \times 4}{0.01} = 4.8\times10^{-4} \text{ m}

Width of central peak = 0.48 mm.

c) A monochromatic light of wavelength 5890 Å is incident normally on a diffraction grating which has 6000 lines per centimeter. i) At what angle will the second order image be seen? [2] ii) Is third order image possible with this grating? [1]

Answer

Given: λ=5890\lambda = 5890 Å =5.89×10−7= 5.89\times10^{-7} m, N=6000N = 6000 lines/cm =6×105= 6\times10^5 lines/m.

Grating element:

d=1N=16×105=1.667×10−6 md = \frac{1}{N} = \frac{1}{6\times10^5} = 1.667\times10^{-6} \text{ m}

i) Angle of second order image (grating equation dsin⁡θ=nλd\sin\theta = n\lambda, n=2n = 2):

sin⁡θ2=2λd=2×5.89×10−7×6×105=0.7068\sin\theta_2 = \frac{2\lambda}{d} = 2 \times 5.89\times10^{-7} \times 6\times10^5 = 0.7068 θ2=sin⁡−1(0.7068)≈45.0∘\theta_2 = \sin^{-1}(0.7068) \approx 45.0^\circ

ii) Third order: For n=3n = 3,

sin⁡θ3=3λd=3×5.89×10−7×6×105=1.06\sin\theta_3 = \frac{3\lambda}{d} = 3 \times 5.89\times10^{-7} \times 6\times10^5 = 1.06

Since sin⁡θ\sin\theta cannot exceed 1, the third order image is not possible. (Maximum order =d/λ=2.83= d/\lambda = 2.83, i.e. 2.)

b) A parallel beam of monochromatic light is incident on diffraction grating having 500 lines/mm to get second order maxima at 30∘^\circ. Calculate the wavelength of light used. [3]

Answer

Given: N=500N = 500 lines/mm =5×105= 5\times10^5 lines/m, order n=2n = 2, θ=30∘\theta = 30^\circ.

Grating element:

d=1N=15×105=2×10−6 md = \frac{1}{N} = \frac{1}{5\times10^5} = 2\times10^{-6} \text{ m}

Grating equation:

dsin⁡θ=nλ  ⇒  λ=dsin⁡θnd\sin\theta = n\lambda \;\Rightarrow\; \lambda = \frac{d\sin\theta}{n}

Substitution:

λ=2×10−6×sin⁡30∘2=2×10−6×0.52=5×10−7 m\lambda = \frac{2\times10^{-6} \times \sin 30^\circ}{2} = \frac{2\times10^{-6} \times 0.5}{2} = 5\times10^{-7} \text{ m}

Wavelength = 5×10−75\times10^{-7} m = 500 nm (5000 Å).

A diffraction grating has 400 lines per mm and is illuminated normally by monochromatic light of wavelength 600 nm. Calculate
i) The grating spacing.
ii) The angle to the normal at which the first order maximum is seen.
iii) The numbers of diffraction maxima obtained. [1+1+1]

Answer

Given: N=400N = 400 lines/mm =4×105= 4\times10^5 lines/m, λ=600\lambda = 600 nm =6×10−7= 6\times10^{-7} m.

i) Grating spacing

d=1N=14×105=2.5×10−6 md = \frac{1}{N} = \frac{1}{4\times10^5} = 2.5\times10^{-6} \text{ m}

ii) First order angle (dsin⁡θ=nλd\sin\theta = n\lambda, n=1n = 1):

sin⁡θ1=λd=6×10−72.5×10−6=0.24  ⇒  θ1=13.9∘\sin\theta_1 = \frac{\lambda}{d} = \frac{6\times10^{-7}}{2.5\times10^{-6}} = 0.24 \;\Rightarrow\; \theta_1 = 13.9^\circ

iii) Number of maxima: The largest possible sin⁡θ\sin\theta is 1:

nmax⁡=dλ=2.5×10−66×10−7=4.17n_{\max} = \frac{d}{\lambda} = \frac{2.5\times10^{-6}}{6\times10^{-7}} = 4.17

So the highest order seen is n=4n = 4. Counting orders 1 to 4 on each side plus the central maximum:

Total maxima=2×4+1=9\text{Total maxima} = 2 \times 4 + 1 = 9

A plane transmission grating has 5000 lines per cm and the second order spectral line is diffracted through 30∘30^\circ. Calculate the wavelength of light used. [2]

Answer

Given: N=5000N = 5000 lines/cm, so the grating element is

d=15000 cm=2×10−6 md = \frac{1}{5000}\ \text{cm} = 2\times10^{-6}\ \text{m}

For the second order, n=2n = 2 and θ=30∘\theta = 30^\circ. From dsin⁡θ=nλd\sin\theta = n\lambda:

λ=dsin⁡θn=2×10−6×0.52=5×10−7 m\lambda = \frac{d\sin\theta}{n} = \frac{2\times10^{-6}\times0.5}{2} = 5\times10^{-7}\ \text{m}

The wavelength is 5×10−75\times10^{-7} m =5000= 5000 Å.

(a) A student is trying to make an accurate measurement of the wavelength of green light from a mercury lamp (λ\lambda = 546 nm). Using a double slit of separation of 0.50 mm, he finds he can see ten clear fringes on a screen at a distance of 0.80 m from the slits. He then tries an alternative experiment using a diffraction grating that has 3000 lines/cm.
(ii) What will be the angle of the second-order maximum in the second experiment? [2]
(iii) Suggest which experiment you think will give the more accurate measurement of wavelength (λ\lambda). [1]

Answer

(ii) Angle of second-order maximum

Given: λ=546\lambda = 546 nm =5.46×10−7= 5.46\times10^{-7} m, N=3000N = 3000 lines/cm =3×105= 3\times10^5 lines/m, n=2n = 2.

d=1N=13×105=3.33×10−6 md = \frac{1}{N} = \frac{1}{3\times10^5} = 3.33\times10^{-6} \text{ m} sin⁡θ2=2λd=2×5.46×10−7×3×105=0.3276\sin\theta_2 = \frac{2\lambda}{d} = 2 \times 5.46\times10^{-7} \times 3\times10^5 = 0.3276 θ2=sin⁡−1(0.3276)≈19.1∘\theta_2 = \sin^{-1}(0.3276) \approx 19.1^\circ

(iii) More accurate experiment: The diffraction grating gives a more accurate value of λ\lambda. In the double-slit experiment the fringes are only about 0.87 mm apart and are broad and dim, so measuring their spacing has a large percentage error. A grating has thousands of slits, so its maxima are very sharp and bright and are spread at large angles (19.1∘19.1^\circ here), which can be measured precisely with a spectrometer.

A diffraction pattern is obtained using a beam of red light. What will be the effect on the diffraction pattern if the red light is replaced with white light?
(a) All bright fringes become white. (b) All bright fringes, except the central one, become white. (c) All bright fringes become colourful. (d) All bright fringes, except the central one, become colourful.

Answer

(d) All bright fringes, except the central one, become colourful.

At the centre the path difference is zero for every wavelength, so all colours overlap and the central maximum is white. For other maxima the position depends on λ\lambda, so the colours separate and the fringes are coloured (violet nearer the centre, red farther out).
