The equation of two regression lines are 3x+4y=65,3x+y=323x + 4y = 65, 3x + y = 32. Find the mean values of x and y.

Answer

The two regression lines intersect at the mean values (xˉ,yˉ)(\bar x, \bar y).

Given: 3x+4y=653x + 4y = 65 3x+y=323x + y = 32

Subtracting: 3y=33⇒y=113y = 33 \Rightarrow y = 11

Putting y=11y = 11 in 3x+y=323x + y = 32: 3x+11=32⇒3x=21⇒x=73x + 11 = 32 \Rightarrow 3x = 21 \Rightarrow x = 7

So, xˉ=7,yˉ=11\bar x = 7,\qquad \bar y = 11

Mean of x = 7 and mean of y = 11.

Obtain the regression coefficients.

Answer

For paired data (x,y)(x,y) there are two regression coefficients, found by the method of least squares.

Regression coefficient of yy on xx (from the normal equations ∑y=na+b∑x\sum y=na+b\sum x and ∑xy=a∑x+b∑x2\sum xy=a\sum x+b\sum x^2):

byx=n∑xy−∑x∑yn∑x2−(∑x)2=r σyσxb_{yx}=\frac{n\sum xy-\sum x\sum y}{n\sum x^2-(\sum x)^2}=r\,\frac{\sigma_y}{\sigma_x}

Regression coefficient of xx on yy:

bxy=n∑xy−∑x∑yn∑y2−(∑y)2=r σxσyb_{xy}=\frac{n\sum xy-\sum x\sum y}{n\sum y^2-(\sum y)^2}=r\,\frac{\sigma_x}{\sigma_y}

Also, byx⋅bxy=r2b_{yx}\cdot b_{xy}=r^2, so r=±byx bxyr=\pm\sqrt{b_{yx}\,b_{xy}} (with the sign of the regression coefficients), and both coefficients always have the same sign.

The following table shows the relation between price (X) and demand (Y) of certain items.
Price (X)102040508090
Demand (Y)256241
a) Calculate the correlation coefficient by using Karl Pearson's method and interpret the result. b) Find the equation of regression line Y on X. c) The mean and variance of binomial distribution are 7.5 and 1.875 respectively. Find the number of trials (n).
Figure: Table with Price (X) values 10,20,40,50,80,90 and Demand (Y) values 2,5,6,2,4,1.

Answer

a) Karl Pearson’s coefficient of correlation

XXYYXYXYX2X^2Y2Y^2
102201004
20510040025
406240160036
50210025004
804320640016
9019081001
Total208701910086

Here,

n=6,∑X=290,∑Y=20,∑XY=870,∑X2=19100,∑Y2=86n=6,\quad \sum X=290,\quad \sum Y=20,\quad \sum XY=870,\quad \sum X^2=19100,\quad \sum Y^2=86

Karl Pearson’s coefficient of correlation is

r=n∑XY−∑X∑Y(n∑X2−(∑X)2)(n∑Y2−(∑Y)2)r=\frac{n\sum XY-\sum X\sum Y}{\sqrt{\left(n\sum X^2-(\sum X)^2\right)\left(n\sum Y^2-(\sum Y)^2\right)}}

Substituting the values:

r=6(870)−290(20)(6(19100)−2902)(6(86)−202)r=\frac{6(870)-290(20)}{\sqrt{\left(6(19100)-290^2\right)\left(6(86)-20^2\right)}} r=5220−5800(114600−84100)(516−400)r=\frac{5220-5800}{\sqrt{(114600-84100)(516-400)}} r=−58030500×116r=\frac{-580}{\sqrt{30500\times116}} r=−5803538000r=\frac{-580}{\sqrt{3538000}} r=−0.30835r=-0.30835

So,

r=−0.3083\boxed{r=-0.3083}

Interpretation: There is a weak negative correlation between price and demand. As price increases, demand tends to decrease slightly, but the relationship is not strong.

b) Equation of regression line YY on XX

The regression coefficient of YY on XX is

bYX=n∑XY−∑X∑Yn∑X2−(∑X)2b_{YX}=\frac{n\sum XY-\sum X\sum Y}{n\sum X^2-(\sum X)^2} bYX=−58030500=−0.0190b_{YX}=\frac{-580}{30500}=-0.0190

Now,

Xˉ=2906=48.3333,Yˉ=206=3.3333\bar X=\frac{290}{6}=48.3333,\qquad \bar Y=\frac{20}{6}=3.3333

The regression line is

Y−Yˉ=bYX(X−Xˉ)Y-\bar Y=b_{YX}(X-\bar X) Y−3.3333=−0.0190(X−48.3333)Y-3.3333=-0.0190(X-48.3333) Y=4.2525−0.0190XY=4.2525-0.0190X

Hence, the required regression line is

Y=4.2525−0.0190X\boxed{Y=4.2525-0.0190X}

Exact form:

29X+1525Y=6485\boxed{29X+1525Y=6485}

c) Number of trials of binomial distribution

Given:

Mean=np=7.5\text{Mean}=np=7.5 Variance=npq=1.875\text{Variance}=npq=1.875

Now,

q=npqnp=1.8757.5=0.25q=\frac{npq}{np}=\frac{1.875}{7.5}=0.25 p=1−q=1−0.25=0.75p=1-q=1-0.25=0.75

Also,

np=7.5np=7.5 n(0.75)=7.5n(0.75)=7.5 n=7.50.75=10n=\frac{7.5}{0.75}=10

Therefore,

n=10\boxed{n=10}

The number of trials is 10.

Interpretation:
The coefficient of correlation is r=0.958r=0.958, which is very close to +1+1. Hence, there is a strong positive correlation between height and weight. That is, as height increases, weight also tends to increase.

Using the line of regression, estimate the weight of a baby at the age of 4 months and age of the baby when weight is 6 kg, from the following table.
Age (in month)12356
Weight (in Kg)5781012
Figure: Table with two rows: Age (in month) and Weight (in Kg).

Answer

Let age be xx (months) and weight be yy (kg). n=5n=5.

Total4275382165

Here ∑x=17\sum x=17, so xˉ=3.4\bar x=3.4 and yˉ=8.4\bar y=8.4.

Weight at 4 months (regression of yy on xx)

byx=5(165)−17(42)5(75)−172=11186=1.2907b_{yx}=\frac{5(165)-17(42)}{5(75)-17^2}=\frac{111}{86}=1.2907

y−8.4=1.2907(x−3.4) ⇒ y=4.0116+1.2907xy-8.4=1.2907(x-3.4)\ \Rightarrow\ y=4.0116+1.2907x

At x=4x=4: y=4.0116+5.1628≈9.17y=4.0116+5.1628\approx 9.17 kg.

Age when weight is 6 kg (regression of xx on yy)

bxy=5(165)−17(42)5(382)−422=111146=0.7603b_{xy}=\frac{5(165)-17(42)}{5(382)-42^2}=\frac{111}{146}=0.7603

x−3.4=0.7603(y−8.4) ⇒ x=−2.9865+0.7603yx-3.4=0.7603(y-8.4)\ \Rightarrow\ x=-2.9865+0.7603y

At y=6y=6: x=−2.9865+4.5618≈1.58x=-2.9865+4.5618\approx 1.58 months.

The baby's weight at 4 months is about 9.17 kg, and a 6 kg baby is about 1.58 months old.

Regression equations in two variables X and Y are 3X+2Y−26=03X + 2Y - 26 = 0 and 6X+Y−31=06X + Y - 31 = 0. i. Find the mean values of X and Y.

Answer

The two regression lines intersect at the mean values (Xˉ,Yˉ)(\bar X,\bar Y).

Given: 3X+2Y−26=0⇒3X+2Y=263X+2Y-26=0 \Rightarrow 3X+2Y=26 6X+Y−31=0⇒6X+Y=316X+Y-31=0 \Rightarrow 6X+Y=31

From the second equation: Y=31−6XY=31-6X

Substitute in the first: 3X+2(31−6X)=263X+2(31-6X)=26 3X+62−12X=263X+62-12X=26 −9X=−36-9X=-36 X=4X=4

Regression equations in two variables X and Y are 3X+2Y−26=03X + 2Y - 26 = 0 and 6X+Y−31=06X + Y - 31 = 0. ii. Find two regression coefficients.

Answer

Given regression equations: 3X+2Y−26=0... (i)3X + 2Y - 26 = 0 \quad \text{... (i)} 6X+Y−31=0... (ii)6X + Y - 31 = 0 \quad \text{... (ii)}

Step 1: Identify which equation is which.

For equation (i): 2Y=26−3X⇒Y=13−32X2Y = 26 - 3X \Rightarrow Y = 13 - \dfrac{3}{2}X, so byx=−32b_{yx} = -\dfrac{3}{2}

For equation (ii): 6X=31−Y⇒X=316−16Y6X = 31 - Y \Rightarrow X = \dfrac{31}{6} - \dfrac{1}{6}Y, so bxy=−16b_{xy} = -\dfrac{1}{6}

Step 2: Verify. bxy×byx=(−16)(−32)=14≤1✓b_{xy} \times b_{yx} = \left(-\dfrac{1}{6}\right)\left(-\dfrac{3}{2}\right) = \dfrac{1}{4} \le 1 \quad \checkmark

(The reverse assignment gives bxy×byx=4>1b_{xy} \times b_{yx} = 4 > 1, which is impossible.)

Answer: byx=−32=−1.5,bxy=−16≈−0.167b_{yx} = -\dfrac{3}{2} = -1.5, \qquad b_{xy} = -\dfrac{1}{6} \approx -0.167

Also, r=−0.25=−0.5r = -\sqrt{0.25} = -0.5 (negative, since both coefficients are negative).
