Intellectual Theft: A Moral Crime

Respected principal, teachers, guests and my dear friends,

Good morning to all. Today I would like to speak on the topic "Intellectual Theft: A Moral Crime".

Intellectual theft, also called plagiarism or intellectual property theft, means using someone else's ideas, writings, songs, designs, research, software or inventions as one's own without permission or credit. Copying a friend's project, downloading a pirated film or software, or using material from the internet without citing the source are all examples.

Is it only a legal offence? No, it is also a moral crime. The creator spends time, effort, money and imagination to produce a work. When someone steals it, he or she takes away the creator's reward and dignity. Such an act is dishonest, unfair and a breach of trust.

It harms society in many ways. Creators lose their income and motivation, so fewer new works are produced. Students who copy do not learn and lose their own creativity, and the value of their certificates falls. Trust in research and education goes down, and the reputation of a nation suffers.

In Nepal, the Copyright Act, 2059 BS and the Patent, Design and Trademark Act, 2022 BS punish such acts with fines, imprisonment and compensation. But laws alone are not enough. Honesty must come from our conscience.

So what should we do? We should always give credit with references, use legal and licensed materials, produce our own work, respect others' creations and report violations. Teachers and parents should also teach moral values and give a good example.

To conclude, intellectual theft kills creativity and damages integrity. Let us promise today to be honest and original and respect the work of others.

Thank you.

Answer

Software such as MS Excel, SPSS or R makes data handling fast, but results are reliable only if the following five points are kept in mind.

  1. Accuracy of data entry: Data must be entered exactly as collected, with correct codes and labels. Errors at this stage ("garbage in, garbage out") spoil every later result.
  2. Cleaning and checking: Missing values, duplicates and obviously wrong entries should be identified and corrected or removed before analysis.
  3. Choosing suitable tools and tests: The software, statistical measures (mean, percentage, correlation) and charts should match the type of data and the research objectives.
  4. Correct interpretation: The output tables and graphs should be read carefully and explained in simple language related to the research questions, without exaggeration or personal bias.
  5. Security, backup and ethics: Files should be saved in multiple places, protected with passwords, and respondents' identity and privacy should be kept confidential. Licensed software should be used.

Following these points makes the research data valid, reliable and effective.

Relevance of Data and Information in Social Research

Respected chairperson, teachers and my dear friends,

Today I will speak on "The Relevance of Data and Information in Social Study Research".

Social research studies human society, such as migration, poverty, education or gender relations, in a systematic way. Data are the raw facts and figures collected from sources, and information is the meaningful form they take after processing. Research without them is only guesswork.

Their relevance can be seen in several ways. First, data help to identify and define the problem correctly. For example, census and survey data show how many people migrate and why. Second, they give the evidence for testing hypotheses and answering the research questions. Third, they make the research objective, valid and reliable rather than based on personal opinion. Fourth, they help planners and the government to make policies, as budgets and programmes are based on facts about people's needs. Finally, they let us compare change over time and between places.

However, data are useful only if they are relevant, meaning accurate, up to date, related to the objectives and collected from reliable sources by suitable methods. Irrelevant or false data lead to wrong conclusions and wasted resources. A researcher should therefore check the source, clean the data and respect the privacy of respondents.

In conclusion, relevant data and information are the backbone of social research. Good research needs good data, and good decisions need good research.

Thank you.

Editorial: Causation and Correlation in Social Studies

Social studies explains why things happen in society, so it deals constantly with two ideas that are often confused: causation and correlation. Correlation means that two things change together. Causation means that one thing actually produces the change in the other.

The distinction matters. Suppose a survey shows that villages with more mobile phones also have more people going abroad. The two are related, but it does not prove that phones cause migration. A third factor, such as roads, education or poverty, may explain both. Likewise, ice-cream sales and drownings both rise in summer, yet ice cream does not cause drowning. Heat does.

If we mistake correlation for causation, policy can fail. Money may be spent on the wrong remedy, and communities may be blamed for problems whose roots lie elsewhere. On the other hand, when a true cause is found, such as lack of girls' toilets leading to girls dropping out, action can bring real change.

Students and researchers should therefore collect enough data, check other possible factors, compare groups and look for the actual mechanism before declaring a cause. Media and political leaders, too, should avoid quick claims based on a coincidence.

Understanding this difference makes our research honest, our decisions wiser and our society better informed.

Dialogue between two students, Sita and Ram, on pictorial presentation

Sita: Ram, why did you draw this bar graph for our research on literacy?

Ram: Because it shows the data clearly. Look, the bars show the literacy rate of each province, and we can see the highest and lowest at once.

Sita: But we could have written it in a paragraph.

Ram: A paragraph of numbers is hard to compare and easily forgotten. Charts, maps and diagrams make information simple and interesting.

Sita: I see. So pictorial presentation also helps those who cannot read much?

Ram: Yes. Even a person with little schooling can understand a pie chart, a map or a photograph. It also helps us show trends, such as changes in population over the years.

Sita: Then it is useful for presenting our report in class too.

Ram: Exactly. It saves time, attracts attention and makes findings convincing. We only need to keep it accurate and label it properly.

Sita: Thank you. Let us add a map and a pie chart as well.

Title: A Study on the Causes and Effects of Child Labour in Kathmandu Metropolitan City

Four objectives of the research:

  1. To identify the major causes of child labour in Kathmandu Metropolitan City — such as poverty, illiteracy of parents, family size, migration from rural areas, and the failure of schools to retain children.

  2. To examine the effects of child labour on children's education and health — including school dropout, physical and mental health problems, and the loss of a normal childhood.

  3. To find out the socio-economic condition of the families whose children are engaged in labour, so as to understand the link between family background and the problem.

  4. To suggest possible measures for the prevention and control of child labour — such as strict enforcement of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, free and compulsory education, and awareness programmes for parents and employers.

What sorts of compatible or incompatible changes has Information Technology resulted in your life and society? Explain with examples.

Answer

Information Technology (IT) has brought both compatible and incompatible changes to my life and society. Compatible changes are those that fit easily with our existing values, habits and social system, while incompatible changes are those that clash with our traditions, norms and established ways of living.

Compatible changes in my life and society

  1. Easy communication: Mobile phones, email and social media let me talk to relatives abroad instantly. This fits our old value of keeping family ties strong, only the means have changed.
  2. Better education: Online classes, e-libraries and YouTube tutorials help me study at home. This supports the traditional goal of learning, but with modern tools.
  3. Fast services: Online banking, eSewa, online bill payment and government portals like Nagarik App save time. People accept them because they make daily life easier without disturbing social norms.
  4. Health and information: Telemedicine and health apps give quick advice. During COVID-19, IT helped continue work and study from home, which society accepted as a useful adjustment.
  5. Awareness: News, social campaigns and online petitions spread awareness about rights, environment and corruption, which fits our democratic values.

Incompatible changes in my life and society

  1. Weakening of face-to-face relations: People now chat on Facebook instead of visiting neighbours. This clashes with our culture of bhetghat and community feeling.
  2. Addiction and time waste: Excessive use of TikTok, games and reels disturbs study, sleep and health. Parents and teachers see this as against our discipline and family values.
  3. Cybercrime and fraud: Hacking, online banking fraud, fake IDs and cyberbullying create fear. Our society is not fully prepared with laws and awareness to control them.
  4. Privacy problems: Personal photos and data are misused without consent. This conflicts with our traditional sense of personal honour and secrecy.
  5. Cultural erosion: Western lifestyles, fashion and language spread fast through IT, while local language, dress and folk culture are neglected. This is incompatible with our effort to preserve national identity.
  6. Digital divide: Educated, rich and urban people benefit more, while poor, rural and illiterate people are left behind. This increases inequality, which is against our value of social justice.
  7. Unemployment: Automation and online business reduce jobs in traditional sectors like shops and offices, causing frustration among youth.

Conclusion

In short, IT has made life faster, easier and more connected, which are compatible changes. But it has also brought addiction, cybercrime, privacy loss, cultural erosion and inequality, which are incompatible with our social values. Therefore, we should use IT wisely, follow cyber laws, respect privacy and balance technology with our culture and humanity.
