a) How can a spherical wavefront be changed into plane wavefront? Draw a diagram to justify your answer. (2)
b) Apply Huygen's principle to verify the law of reflection of light. (3)

Answer

a) Spherical to plane wavefront

A point source produces spherical wavefronts. If the point source is placed at the focus of a convex lens (or of a concave mirror), the rays become parallel after refraction, so the wavefront becomes plane.

            spherical         convex        plane
            wavefronts         lens       wavefronts
                (  (           /\          |  |  |
      S •      (  (  (        |  |  ---->  |  |  |
     (at F)     (  (           \/          |  |  |
          |<----- f ----->|

The parts of the spherical wavefront near the axis travel through the thicker middle of the lens and are slowed more, while the outer parts travel through thinner glass. The curved wavefront is straightened into a plane one.

b) Law of reflection from Huygens' principle

     incident rays          reflected rays
          \     \             /     /
           \     B           D     /
            \   / \         / \   /
             \ /   \       /   \ /
   X __________A_____________C__________ Y
              (AB = incident wavefront, CD = reflected wavefront,
               BC = AD = vt)

Let a plane wavefront ABAB strike the reflecting surface XYXY at angle ii. When end AA touches the surface, end BB is still a distance BCBC away from it.

  1. In the time tt that the disturbance at BB travels to CC, BC=vtBC = vt.
  2. In the same time, the secondary wavelet from AA spreads as a hemisphere of radius AD=vtAD = vt (same medium, same speed).
  3. Draw the tangent CDCD from CC to this wavelet. By Huygens' principle, CDCD is the reflected wavefront.
  4. In right-angled triangles ABCABC and ADCADC (right angles at BB and DD):
    • ACAC is common,
    • BC=AD=vtBC = AD = vt. So △ABC≅△CDA\triangle ABC \cong \triangle CDA (RHS).
  5. Hence ∠BAC=∠DCA\angle BAC = \angle DCA. But ∠BAC=i\angle BAC = i (angle between incident wavefront and surface) and ∠DCA=r\angle DCA = r (angle between reflected wavefront and surface).
∠i=∠r\boxed{\angle i = \angle r}
  1. The incident wavefront, reflected wavefront and the normal all lie in the plane of the paper.

These are the laws of reflection.

a) How can a plane wavefront be converted into a spherical wavefront? Justify. [2]

Answer

A plane wavefront (parallel beam) can be converted into a spherical wavefront by passing it through a convex lens (or reflecting it from a concave mirror).

   plane         convex       converging spherical
 wavefronts       lens          wavefronts
  |  |  |          /\            )  )
  |  |  |  ---->  |  |  ---->   ) )  •F
  |  |  |          \/            )  )

Justification: The central part of the plane wavefront passes through the thick middle of the lens, where light travels slowly, so it is delayed most. The edges pass through thin glass and are delayed less. The wavefront comes out curved and converges to the focus FF, i.e. it becomes a converging spherical wavefront centred at FF. A concave lens does the opposite and gives a diverging spherical wavefront that appears to come from its focus.

Which one of the following phenomena is not explained by Huygen's construction of wave front?
  • (A) refraction
  • (B) reflection
  • (C) polarization
  • (D) diffraction

Answer

(C) polarization

Huygens took light waves as longitudinal waves. Polarization is possible only for transverse waves, so Huygens' construction cannot explain it. Reflection, refraction and diffraction can all be explained using secondary wavelets.

Time taken by light to cross a glass slab of thickness 5 cm and refractive index of 1.5 will be:
(a) 0.2 ns (b) 0.25 ns (c) 0.3 ns (d) 0.35 ns

Answer

(b) 0.25 ns

Speed in glass v=cμ=3×1081.5=2×108v = \dfrac{c}{\mu} = \dfrac{3\times10^8}{1.5} = 2\times10^8 m/s, so t=dv=0.052×108=2.5×10−10t = \dfrac{d}{v} = \dfrac{0.05}{2\times10^8} = 2.5\times10^{-10} s =0.25= 0.25 ns.

The given figure represents a wavefront AB moving in air and incident on a plane glass surface XY. Its position after refraction through the glass slab is CD. The refractive index of glass with respect to air will be equal to:
(a) AB/CD (b) BD/AD (c) AC/AD (d) BD/AC
Figure: a plane wavefront AB in air meets the glass surface XY (A and D lie on XY, the glass below); the incident ray makes angle θ\theta with the normal at A, and after refraction the wavefront is CD with C inside the glass, the refracted ray making angle ϕ\phi with the normal.

Answer

(d) BD/ACBD/AC

In the time tt that the point BB of the wavefront travels the distance BDBD in air, the point AA travels the distance ACAC in glass. So BD=ctBD = ct and AC=vtAC = vt, and

n=cv=BDACn = \frac{c}{v} = \frac{BD}{AC}
