Write the chemical equation to illustrate 2,4-DNP test (for example, ethanal reacting with 2,4-DNP).

Answer

Carbonyl compounds react with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNP, Brady's reagent) to give a yellow/orange/red precipitate of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone.

CH3CHO+H2N-NH-C6H3(NO2)2→CH3CH=N-NH-C6H3(NO2)2↓+H2OCH_3CHO + H_2N\text{-}NH\text{-}C_6H_3(NO_2)_2 \rightarrow CH_3CH=N\text{-}NH\text{-}C_6H_3(NO_2)_2\downarrow + H_2O

Ethanal + 2,4-DNP gives ethanal 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (orange-yellow ppt). This test is given by all aldehydes and ketones.

Give an example of Cannizzaro's reaction.

Answer

Cannizzaro's reaction: aldehydes with no α\alpha-hydrogen, when heated with concentrated alkali, undergo self oxidation-reduction (disproportionation) to give an alcohol and the salt of a carboxylic acid.

Example (benzaldehyde):

2C6H5CHO+NaOH(conc.)→ΔC6H5CH2OH+C6H5COONa2C_6H_5CHO + NaOH(conc.) \xrightarrow{\Delta} C_6H_5CH_2OH + C_6H_5COONa

Benzaldehyde gives benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate. Likewise, 2HCHO+NaOH→CH3OH+HCOONa2HCHO + NaOH \rightarrow CH_3OH + HCOONa.

C6H5CH2-CHOC_6H_5CH_2\text{-}CHO and C6H5CHOC_6H_5CHO can be distinguished by;
(a) Iodoform test (b) Tollen's test (c) 2,4-DNP test (d) Fehling test

Answer

(d) Fehling test. C6H5CH2CHOC_6H_5CH_2CHO is an aliphatic aldehyde (CHO attached to an alkyl carbon) and reduces Fehling's solution to give a red ppt of Cu2OCu_2O. Benzaldehyde is aromatic and does not reduce Fehling's solution. Neither gives the iodoform test, both give Tollen's and 2,4-DNP tests.

An alkene C7H14C_7H_{14} on ozonolysis give an aldehyde with formula C3H6OC_3H_6O and ketone. The ketone is
(a) propanone (b) butan-2-one (c) pentan-2-one (d) Pentan-3-one

Answer

(b) butan-2-one. The aldehyde C3H6OC_3H_6O is propanal, CH3CH2CHOCH_3CH_2CHO (3 C). The alkene has 7 C, so the ketone has 4 C, which is C4H8OC_4H_8O, and must be butan-2-one. The alkene is CH3CH2CH=C(CH3)CH2CH3CH_3CH_2CH=C(CH_3)CH_2CH_3 (3-methylhex-3-ene); ozonolysis gives CH3CH2CHO+CH3COCH2CH3CH_3CH_2CHO + CH_3COCH_2CH_3.

An organic compound 'A' on ozonolysis gives a mixture of compounds B and C. Both B and C give a positive DNP test. The molecular formula of B is C3H6OC_3H_6O, which does not give Tollen's test. However, C has the same molecular formula and gives Tollen's test.
Identify the compounds A, B and C with their IUPAC names and relevant chemical reactions. [5]

Answer

Identifying B and C.

  • Both give a positive DNP test, so both are carbonyl compounds (aldehydes or ketones).
  • B is C3H6OC_3H_6O and does not give Tollens' test, so it is a ketone: B = propanone, CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3.
  • C is C3H6OC_3H_6O and gives Tollens' test, so it is an aldehyde: C = propanal, CH3CH2CHOCH_3CH_2CHO.

Identifying A. Ozonolysis cleaves the C=CC=C bond, and the carbonyl carbons in the products were the two alkene carbons. Joining the two fragments gives A with 6 carbons:

CH3CH2CH=C(CH3)2CH_3CH_2CH=C(CH_3)_2

A = 2-methylpent-2-ene (C6H12C_6H_{12}).

Reactions

Ozonolysis (ozonide formation, then reductive cleavage with Zn / H2OH_2O):

CH3CH2CH=C(CH3)2→O3ozonide→Zn/H2OCH3CH2CHO+CH3COCH3CH_3CH_2CH=C(CH_3)_2 \xrightarrow{O_3} \text{ozonide} \xrightarrow{Zn/H_2O} CH_3CH_2CHO + CH_3COCH_3

DNP test (both B and C):

R2C=O+H2NNHC6H3(NO2)2→R2C=NNHC6H3(NO2)2+H2OR_2C=O + H_2NNHC_6H_3(NO_2)_2 \rightarrow R_2C=NNHC_6H_3(NO_2)_2 + H_2O

Tollens' test (only C):

CH3CH2CHO+2[Ag(NH3)2]++3OH−→CH3CH2COO−+2Ag↓+4NH3+2H2OCH_3CH_2CHO + 2[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+ + 3OH^- \rightarrow CH_3CH_2COO^- + 2Ag\downarrow + 4NH_3 + 2H_2O

Which of the following compounds cannot reduce Fehling's solution?
(a) Benzaldehyde (b) Formaldehyde (c) Acetaldehyde (d) Butyraldehyde

Answer

(a) Benzaldehyde

Fehling's solution is a mild oxidising agent that is reduced only by aliphatic aldehydes (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde), giving a red precipitate of Cu2OCu_2O. Aromatic aldehydes such as benzaldehyde do not reduce it.

A→(ii) Zn/H2O(i) O3ethanal+methanalA \xrightarrow[(ii)\ Zn/H_2O]{(i)\ O_3} \text{ethanal} + \text{methanal} Identify the compound A.
(a) Ethene (b) Propene (c) But-1-ene (d) But-2-ene

Answer

(b) Propene

Ozonolysis breaks the C=C bond and puts a C=O at each carbon. Propene CH3CH=CH2CH_3CH=CH_2 gives CH3CHOCH_3CHO (ethanal) and HCHOHCHO (methanal). Ethene would give two molecules of methanal, but-1-ene would give propanal and methanal, and but-2-ene would give two molecules of ethanal.

Write down the functional isomers of C3H6OC_3H_6O with their IUPAC names. How are they distinguished by Tollen's reagent? How would you obtain these isomers by dehydrogenation of alcohols? [2+1+2]

Answer

Functional isomers of C3H6OC_3H_6O [2]

StructureFunctional groupIUPAC name
CH3CH2CHOCH_3CH_2CHOaldehydePropanal
CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3ketonePropanone

Distinction by Tollens' reagent (ammoniacal silver nitrate) [1]

Propanal is oxidised and reduces Tollens' reagent to metallic silver, giving a silver mirror:

CH3CH2CHO+2[Ag(NH3)2]++3OH−→CH3CH2COO−+2Ag↓+4NH3+2H2OCH_3CH_2CHO + 2[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+ + 3OH^- \rightarrow CH_3CH_2COO^- + 2Ag\downarrow + 4NH_3 + 2H_2O

Propanone is not oxidised and gives no silver mirror.

Preparation by dehydrogenation of alcohols [2]

Alcohol vapour is passed over heated copper at about 573 K (300 °C).

Primary alcohol gives the aldehyde:

CH3CH2CH2OH→573 KCuCH3CH2CHO+H2CH_3CH_2CH_2OH \xrightarrow[573\,K]{Cu} CH_3CH_2CHO + H_2

Secondary alcohol gives the ketone:

CH3CH(OH)CH3→573 KCuCH3COCH3+H2CH_3CH(OH)CH_3 \xrightarrow[573\,K]{Cu} CH_3COCH_3 + H_2

An organic compound having molecular formula C3H6OC_3H_6O gives two functional isomers (P) and (Q). The isomer (P) gives positive Tollen's and Fehling's tests. [1+2+2]
a) Identify (P) and (Q) and write their IUPAC names.
b) How would you prepare compound (P) from (i) oxidation of alcohol and (ii) ozonolysis of alkenes?
c) How would you prepare compound (Q) from (i) gem-dihaloalkane and (ii) catalytic hydration of alkyne?

Answer

a) The functional isomers of C3H6OC_3H_6O are an aldehyde and a ketone. Only the aldehyde gives positive Tollens' and Fehling's tests, so

  • (P) = CH3CH2CHOCH_3CH_2CHO, propanal
  • (Q) = CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3, propanone (acetone)

b) Preparation of propanal (P)

(i) Oxidation of the primary alcohol propan-1-ol with a mild oxidant (acidified K2Cr2O7K_2Cr_2O_7 with the aldehyde distilled off, or PCC):

CH3CH2CH2OH→[O]CH3CH2CHO+H2OCH_3CH_2CH_2OH \xrightarrow{[O]} CH_3CH_2CHO + H_2O

(ii) Ozonolysis of a symmetrical alkene such as hex-3-ene, followed by Zn/H2OH_2O:

CH3CH2CH=CHCH2CH3→(i) O3, (ii) Zn/H2O2 CH3CH2CHOCH_3CH_2CH=CHCH_2CH_3 \xrightarrow{(i)\ O_3,\ (ii)\ Zn/H_2O} 2\,CH_3CH_2CHO

c) Preparation of propanone (Q)

(i) From a gem-dihaloalkane, 2,2-dichloropropane, by hydrolysis with aqueous KOH (the unstable gem-diol loses water):

CH3CCl2CH3→aq. KOH[CH3C(OH)2CH3]→CH3COCH3+H2OCH_3CCl_2CH_3 \xrightarrow{aq.\ KOH} [CH_3C(OH)_2CH_3] \rightarrow CH_3COCH_3 + H_2O

(ii) Catalytic hydration of propyne with dil. H2SO4H_2SO_4 and HgSO4HgSO_4 (Markovnikov addition, then keto-enol shift):

CH3C≡CH+H2O→HgSO4, dil. H2SO4[CH3C(OH)=CH2]→CH3COCH3CH_3C\equiv CH + H_2O \xrightarrow{HgSO_4,\ dil.\ H_2SO_4} [CH_3C(OH)=CH_2] \rightarrow CH_3COCH_3

c. Write the chemical reaction that would occur when the given preservative is treated with phenol in acidic medium. (2)
d. How would you obtain the preservative from methanol? (1)
(B) A carbonyl compound with molecular formula C3H6OC_3H_6O (it does not give silver mirror test) has treated with a compound Y which gives Z. Z on hydrolysis in acidic medium gives 2-hydroxy-2-methyl propanoic acid. Identify the carbonyl compound, Y and Z with proper reactions. [1+1+1]
Figure: Photograph of a fish preserved as a museum specimen in a tall glass jar filled with a pale yellow preserving liquid.

Answer

The compound is formalin, a 40% aqueous solution of methanal (HCHO). It preserves specimens and is used to make urotropine.

(A)

a. Methanal (no α\alpha-hydrogen) heated with conc. NaOH undergoes Cannizzaro reaction:

2HCHO+NaOH→ΔCH3OH+HCOONa2HCHO + NaOH \xrightarrow{\Delta} CH_3OH + HCOONa

b. The urinary antiseptic is urotropine (hexamethylenetetramine), (CH2)6N4(CH_2)_6N_4, formed by 6HCHO+4NH3→(CH2)6N4+6H2O6HCHO + 4NH_3 \rightarrow (CH_2)_6N_4 + 6H_2O.

Structure: a cage (adamantane-like) of four N atoms at the corners of a tetrahedron, joined by six CH2CH_2 bridges along its edges. Each N is bonded to three CH2CH_2 groups and each CH2CH_2 links two N atoms.

c. Phenol with methanal in acidic medium first gives o-/p-hydroxymethylphenol, which condenses with more phenol, losing water, to form the linear polymer Novolac (a Bakelite-type resin):

C6H5OH+HCHO→H+HOC6H4CH2OH→n C6H5OH, −H2ONovolacC_6H_5OH + HCHO \xrightarrow{H^+} HOC_6H_4CH_2OH \xrightarrow{n\,C_6H_5OH,\ -H_2O} \text{Novolac}

d. Methanol to methanal: by catalytic dehydrogenation or controlled oxidation:

CH3OH→Cu, 300∘CHCHO+H2CH_3OH \xrightarrow{Cu,\ 300^\circ C} HCHO + H_2

or 2CH3OH+O2→Ag, 600∘C2HCHO+2H2O2CH_3OH + O_2 \xrightarrow{Ag,\ 600^\circ C} 2HCHO + 2H_2O.

(B) The carbonyl compound C3H6OC_3H_6O that does not give Tollen's test is a ketone, propanone (acetone), CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3. Y is HCN. Z is acetone cyanohydrin.

CH3COCH3+HCN→OH−(CH3)2C(OH)CN(Z)CH_3COCH_3 + HCN \xrightarrow{OH^-} (CH_3)_2C(OH)CN \quad (Z) (CH3)2C(OH)CN+2H2O→H+(CH3)2C(OH)COOH+NH3(CH_3)_2C(OH)CN + 2H_2O \xrightarrow{H^+} (CH_3)_2C(OH)COOH + NH_3

The product is 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropanoic acid, as given. So carbonyl compound = propanone, Y = HCN, Z = 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropanenitrile.

An organic compound X reacts with methyl magnesium bromide followed by acidic hydrolysis yields the compound Y. The compound Y on oxidation with acidified KMnO4KMnO_4 yields Z. All three gives positive iodoform test. Answer the followings:
a) Predict the compounds X, Y and Z with sequence of reaction and give their IUPAC names. (3)
b) Make the product by reacting Z with dilute NaOH? (2)

Answer

a) X is ethanal (CH3CHOCH_3CHO), Y is propan-2-ol (CH3CH(OH)CH3CH_3CH(OH)CH_3), Z is propanone (CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3).

CH3CHO+CH3MgBr→dry etherCH3CH(CH3)OMgBr→H3O+CH3CH(OH)CH3 (Y)CH_3CHO + CH_3MgBr \xrightarrow{dry\ ether} CH_3CH(CH_3)OMgBr \xrightarrow{H_3O^+} CH_3CH(OH)CH_3\ (Y) CH3CH(OH)CH3→acidified KMnO4, [O]CH3COCH3 (Z)CH_3CH(OH)CH_3 \xrightarrow{acidified\ KMnO_4,\ [O]} CH_3COCH_3\ (Z)

All three have the CH3CO−CH_3CO- or CH3CH(OH)−CH_3CH(OH)- group, so all give a yellow precipitate of iodoform with I2/NaOHI_2/NaOH.

b) Propanone has α\alpha-hydrogens, so with dilute NaOH it undergoes aldol condensation:

2CH3COCH3→dil. NaOH(CH3)2C(OH)CH2COCH32CH_3COCH_3 \xrightarrow{dil.\ NaOH} (CH_3)_2C(OH)CH_2COCH_3

The product is diacetone alcohol (4-hydroxy-4-methylpentan-2-one), which on heating gives mesityl oxide (CH3)2C=CHCOCH3(CH_3)_2C=CHCOCH_3.

A compound Y on treatment with dil. NaOH gives 3-hydroxybutanal.
a) Identify the compound Y. [1]
b) Compound Y can be formed from an alkene. Name the alkene and write the reactions involved. [3]
c) How does Y react with HCN? [1]

Answer

a) Compound Y

Y is ethanal (CH3CHOCH_3CHO). Two molecules undergo an aldol condensation with dilute NaOH:

2CH3CHO→dil. NaOHCH3CH(OH)CH2CHO2CH_3CHO \xrightarrow{dil.\ NaOH} CH_3CH(OH)CH_2CHO

b) Alkene that gives Y

Y can be obtained from but-2-ene by ozonolysis, which breaks the double bond and gives two molecules of ethanal:

CH3CH=CHCH3+O3→ozonideCH_3CH=CHCH_3 + O_3 \rightarrow \text{ozonide} ozonide+H2O→Zn2CH3CHO+ZnO\text{ozonide} + H_2O \xrightarrow{Zn} 2CH_3CHO + ZnO

(Zinc prevents the oxidation of ethanal to ethanoic acid by H2O2H_2O_2.)

c) Reaction of Y with HCN

Ethanal adds HCN (nucleophilic addition, with a trace of base) to give ethanal cyanohydrin, 2-hydroxypropanenitrile:

CH3CHO+HCN→CH3CH(OH)CNCH_3CHO + HCN \rightarrow CH_3CH(OH)CN

Compound A having molecular formula C3H6OC_3H_6O on reduction gives B. Both compounds A and B respond to the iodoform test.
a) Identify compounds A and B, giving chemical reactions. [2]
b) Give any two general methods of preparation of compound A. [2]
c) Convert compound B into pseudonitrol. [2]
d) How is the functional isomer of B prepared by Williamson's synthesis? [2]

Answer

a) Identification of A and B

Only compounds with a CH3CO−CH_3CO- or CH3CH(OH)−CH_3CH(OH)- group give the iodoform test. So A is propanone (CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3), and B, its reduction product, is propan-2-ol (CH3CH(OH)CH3CH_3CH(OH)CH_3).

CH3COCH3+2[H]→LiAlH4 or H2/NiCH3CH(OH)CH3CH_3COCH_3 + 2[H] \xrightarrow{LiAlH_4\ \text{or}\ H_2/Ni} CH_3CH(OH)CH_3

b) Two methods of preparing propanone

  1. Oxidation of propan-2-ol (a secondary alcohol):
CH3CH(OH)CH3→K2Cr2O7/H2SO4CH3COCH3CH_3CH(OH)CH_3 \xrightarrow{K_2Cr_2O_7/H_2SO_4} CH_3COCH_3
  1. Dry distillation of calcium ethanoate:
(CH3COO)2Ca→ΔCH3COCH3+CaCO3(CH_3COO)_2Ca \xrightarrow{\Delta} CH_3COCH_3 + CaCO_3

c) Propan-2-ol to pseudonitrol

CH3CH(OH)CH3→red P+I2CH3CHICH3→AgNO2CH3CH(NO2)CH3CH_3CH(OH)CH_3 \xrightarrow{red\ P + I_2} CH_3CHICH_3 \xrightarrow{AgNO_2} CH_3CH(NO_2)CH_3 CH3CH(NO2)CH3→HNO2 (NaNO2+HCl)(CH3)2C(NO)NO2+H2OCH_3CH(NO_2)CH_3 \xrightarrow{HNO_2\ (NaNO_2 + HCl)} (CH_3)_2C(NO)NO_2 + H_2O

The product, 2-nitro-2-nitrosopropane, is pseudonitrol (blue in solution).

d) Functional isomer of B by Williamson's synthesis

The ether isomer of propan-2-ol (C3H8OC_3H_8O) is methoxyethane. Sodium ethoxide reacts with methyl iodide (or sodium methoxide with ethyl iodide):

C2H5ONa+CH3I→CH3OC2H5+NaIC_2H_5ONa + CH_3I \rightarrow CH_3OC_2H_5 + NaI

(a) CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3 (b) (CH3)2C=CH2(CH_3)_2C=CH_2 (c) CH3COCH2CH3CH_3COCH_2CH_3 (d) (CH3CH2)3CH(CH_3CH_2)_3CH

Answer

(a) CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3

The α\alpha-hydrogens of a carbonyl compound are acidic because the carbanion left behind is stabilised by resonance into an enolate ion. Options (b) and (d) are hydrocarbons with no such stabilisation, so they are far less acidic. Of the two ketones, acetone has only methyl groups on the carbonyl, so its enolate is less destabilised by electron-releasing alkyl groups than that of butanone. Acetone is therefore the most acidic.
