Answer
Biography of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa
Tenzing Norgay Sherpa is one of the most famous mountaineers in the world, and Nepal and the Sherpa community are proud of him.
Tenzing was born in 1914 in a Sherpa family in the Khumbu region, near Mount Everest, though some accounts say in Tibet. As a boy, he looked after yaks and dreamed of the great mountain he saw every day. He had no formal schooling, but he was brave, strong and a quick learner. In his youth he went to Darjeeling, where he worked as a porter and joined expeditions to the Himalayas.
Important events marked his life. In 1935 he first took part in an Everest expedition as a porter. Over the years he joined many expeditions, including a Swiss expedition in 1952 that reached very close to the summit. On 29 May 1953, he and the New Zealander Edmund Hillary became the first people confirmed to stand on top of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. He later became the first director of field training at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling.
Tenzing became popular because of his courage, determination and humility. Despite his fame, he remained simple and modest. His success showed that Sherpas were not merely helpers but skilled mountaineers of the highest level, and it inspired people all over the world.
His major contributions to society include training hundreds of young climbers, encouraging mountaineering as an adventure sport and a profession, and drawing the world's attention to the Himalayas and the Sherpa people. His achievement also boosted tourism and the economy of the Himalayan region.
He received many honours, among them the George Medal from Britain, the Star of Nepal, and the Padma Bhushan from India. Time magazine named him one of the most important people of the twentieth century. He died in 1986, but his name is remembered whenever Everest is mentioned.
His life proves that with determination and hard work, a boy from a small mountain village can reach the top of the world.
