Answer

I live in Bagmati Province, which stretches from the Terai plains (Makwanpur, Chitwan) through the Mahabharat range and hills to the high Himalaya (Rasuwa, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha). This varied geography shapes economic activity in the following ways.

Impact of the geography on economic activities

  1. Agriculture: The fertile Terai and the Kathmandu valley produce rice, wheat, maize, vegetables and milk. Hill slopes allow terrace farming, vegetables and fruit, and the high areas support livestock and herbs such as yarsagumba.
  2. Tourism: Mountains, lakes, national parks (Chitwan, Langtang, Shivapuri) and cultural heritage in the valley make tourism a major source of income.
  3. Industry and trade: The flat valley and Terai host most industries, markets and the road network, and the capital city concentrates banking, services and trade.
  4. Hydropower and water resources: Steep rivers such as the Trishuli, Bhotekoshi and Sunkoshi are used for hydropower, which provides energy and income.
  5. Forest and mineral resources: Community forests, limestone, marble and other minerals support cement and construction industries.

Challenges caused by the geography

  1. Difficult transport: Steep terrain makes road building and maintenance costly, isolating remote hill and mountain districts from markets.
  2. Natural disasters: Landslides, floods, earthquakes (like 2072 BS) and glacial lake risks destroy infrastructure, farms and homes.
  3. Limited farmland and low productivity: Steep land, soil erosion and lack of irrigation reduce yields in the hills, and fertile land in the valley is being lost to housing.
  4. Uneven development and migration: Remote areas lack services, so people migrate to Kathmandu and abroad, leaving villages short of labour and crowding the city.
  5. Environmental pressure: Urbanisation and industries cause pollution, deforestation and pressure on water.

Conclusion: Geography gives my province many opportunities but also challenges. Planned roads, irrigation, disaster management and balanced development are needed to use these opportunities.

प्राकृतिक विपत् जलवायु परिवर्तनको परिणाम हो। यो वाक्यलाई जलवायु परिवर्तनका कारण र प्रभावका आधारमा उदाहरणसहित प्रस्ट पार्नुहोस्।

Answer

The statement is largely true: climate change increases the frequency and intensity of many natural disasters. Climate change means a long-term change in temperature and weather patterns.

Causes of climate change:

  1. Burning of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, methane).
  2. Deforestation and forest fires, which reduce carbon absorption.
  3. Industrialisation, vehicle use and unplanned urbanisation.
  4. Intensive agriculture and waste (livestock methane, landfills).

Effects causing natural disasters (with Nepal examples):

  1. Glacier melt and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF): The Himalayan glaciers, such as in Dolpa and Solukhumbu, are melting fast, and lakes like Imja are risky.
  2. Floods and landslides: Irregular heavy monsoon rainfall damages the hills and the Terai, as in Melamchi flood 2078 and Koshi floods.
  3. Drought and water scarcity: Reduced winter rainfall dries springs and harms crops.
  4. Forest fires and heat waves: Higher temperatures and dry conditions increase wildfire and heat stress in the Terai.
  5. Impact on life and economy: Loss of lives, crops, and tourism and increased poverty and displacement.

Conclusion: Not all disasters (for example earthquakes) are due to climate change, but climate-related disasters are increasing. Nepal should reduce emissions, plant trees and prepare disaster management plans.

Answer

Concept of disaster management

A disaster is a sudden or gradual event, natural (earthquake, flood, landslide, fire, epidemic) or human-made, that causes loss of life, property and the environment and cannot be handled by the affected community alone. Disaster management is the planned process of reducing risk before a disaster, responding quickly during it, and recovering and rebuilding afterwards. It covers four phases: prevention/mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery/reconstruction.

Efforts made by the state (with examples)

  1. Legal framework: The Natural Calamity (Relief) Act, 2039 BS was replaced by the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act, 2074 BS, which also provides for federal, provincial and local disaster committees.
  2. Institutions: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the National Emergency Operation Centre, and local disaster management committees were formed.
  3. Policy and planning: The National Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management 2018-2030 follows the Sendai Framework, and the constitution lists disaster management as a shared responsibility of three levels of government.
  4. Preparedness and response: The Nepal Army, Armed Police, Nepal Police and Red Cross conduct search and rescue, early-warning systems (flood warning in the Koshi and Narayani) and emergency stockpiles. Drills and awareness programmes are held in schools.
  5. Relief and reconstruction: After the 2072 BS Gorkha earthquake the National Reconstruction Authority was formed and gave housing grants to affected families. Relief is given to flood and landslide victims every monsoon.
  6. Building codes and awareness: The National Building Code has made earthquake-resistant building construction compulsory, and disaster information is spread through media and local bodies.

Conclusion: Nepal has made good progress in law and institutions, but better coordination, resources and community participation are still needed.

नेपालको कुनै दुई प्रदेशहरूको भौगोलिक अवस्था र जनसङ्ख्या वितरणबिचको सम्बन्ध स्पष्ट पार्नुहोस्।

Answer

Population distribution in Nepal closely follows geography: relief, climate, soil, water and accessibility decide where people settle. Two provinces are compared below.

(a) Madhesh Province (Terai plain)

  • Geography: It lies almost entirely in the southern plain. The land is flat with fertile alluvial soil, plentiful groundwater and rivers, a warm climate, good roads and an open border with India.
  • Population distribution: It is the most densely populated province, with about 6.1 million people (2078 census), roughly 21% of the national population, on a small area (about 6.5% of Nepal). Density is over 600 persons per sq. km.
  • Relationship: Flat fertile land supports intensive farming, easy transport and trade, industries and towns such as Janakpur, Birgunj and Rajbiraj. These attract and hold large numbers of people, so settlement is concentrated and fairly even.

(b) Karnali Province (hill and mountain)

  • Geography: It is rugged and mountainous, with steep slopes, deep river valleys, high Himalayan peaks, a cold climate, thin soil, little cultivable land and very poor road access.
  • Population distribution: It is the least populated province, with about 1.7 million people, roughly 6% of the population, on a large area (about 19%). Density is low, around 60 persons per sq. km. Settlements are scattered in valleys and on river terraces.
  • Relationship: Steep terrain, cold weather, limited farmland, weak transport and few services and jobs discourage settlement and push people to migrate to the Terai and cities.

Conclusion: The contrast between crowded, flat Madhesh and sparse, mountainous Karnali shows that favourable geography attracts dense population while difficult geography keeps it low.

सामाजिक–भौगोलिक अध्ययनमा चित्रात्मक प्रस्तुति र भू–सूचना प्रणालीको अवधारणा तथा महत्व उदाहरणसहित प्रस्ट पार्नुहोस्।

Answer

Pictorial presentation

  • Concept (2 marks): Pictorial presentation shows data and information through visual forms such as charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, photographs and infographics instead of long text or tables. It makes patterns easy to see.
  • Importance with example (2 marks): It makes data simple and quick to understand, helps comparison, attracts attention, and helps explain findings to people with different literacy levels. For example, a bar graph of province-wise literacy shows at once which province is highest and lowest, and a pie chart shows the share of ethnic groups.

Geographic Information System (GIS)

  • Concept (2 marks): GIS is a computer-based system that collects, stores, analyses, manages and displays spatial (location-based) data on digital maps. It links places with their attributes, such as population, land use, roads or rivers, in layers.
  • Importance with example (2 marks): GIS helps planning, disaster management, resource mapping and decision making. For example, a GIS flood-hazard map of a river basin shows settlements at risk, so local government can plan evacuation routes and safe shelters. It is also used to plan roads, schools and health posts, and to monitor land use and forests.

Link: Pictorial presentation communicates results clearly, and GIS produces map-based visuals from spatial data, so together they strengthen social-geographic study.

Answer

How GIS helps in geographic study

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based tool for collecting, storing, analysing and displaying spatial data. It helps geographic study in these ways, as a student would use it:

  1. Preparing maps: I can make digital maps of my ward showing settlements, roads, rivers, schools and land use, using layers.
  2. Collecting and storing data: Location data collected with GPS and satellite images can be stored with attributes such as population and household numbers.
  3. Analysing patterns: I can study population distribution, land-use change, and the relation between settlements and water sources or roads.
  4. Hazard and risk study: I can identify areas at risk of flood and landslide and plan safe routes and shelters.
  5. Planning: It helps locate suitable places for schools, health posts, markets and infrastructure.
  6. Monitoring change: Comparing maps and images of different years shows urban growth, forest loss or river course changes.

Importance

  • It saves time and cost and gives more accurate results than manual mapping.
  • It makes complex information easy to see.
  • It supports better decisions in planning, disaster management, resource management and research.
  • Maps can be updated, shared and reused easily.

लुम्बिनी प्रदेशका सामाजिक विशेषताहरू प्रस्तुत गर्नुहोस्।

Answer

Lumbini Province lies in the western Tarai, mid-hills and Himalayan part of Nepal, with Deukhuri (Dang) as its provincial capital. Its main social features are:

  1. Diverse population: Tharu, Magar, Brahmin, Chhetri, Muslim, Yadav, Dalit and other groups live together, so the province is rich in ethnic and linguistic variety.
  2. Languages: Nepali is the main language, but Tharu, Magar, Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Urdu and others are also spoken in different areas.
  3. Religions: Hindus form the majority, followed by Buddhists, Muslims, Christians and others. Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, makes the province a centre of Buddhist faith and pilgrimage.
  4. Culture and festivals: Dashain, Tihar, Maghi, Holi, Eid, Buddha Jayanti and local festivals are celebrated with harmony. The Tharu stick dance, Magar Maruni and other folk traditions remain alive.
  5. Settlement and livelihood: Most people live in the fertile Tarai and depend on agriculture. Towns such as Butwal, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj and Tulsipur are growing centres of trade, education and services, and foreign employment is also common.
  6. Social challenges: Poverty, caste and gender discrimination, early marriage, and unequal access to health and education still exist, especially in remote hill areas and among marginalised groups.
