Which one of the following is equation of circle which touches -axis and whose centre is at ?

Answer

A circle that touches the xx-axis has radius equal to the yy-coordinate of its centre (in magnitude), because the perpendicular distance from the centre to the xx-axis is the radius.

For centre (h,k)(h,k) touching the xx-axis, r=∣k∣r=|k|, so the equation is

(x−h)2+(y−k)2=k2(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2=k^2

Similarly, a circle touching the yy-axis has r=∣h∣r=|h| and equation (x−h)2+(y−k)2=h2(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2=h^2.

For example, with centre (2,3)(2,3) touching the xx-axis, r=3r=3 and the circle is (x−2)2+(y−3)2=9(x-2)^2+(y-3)^2=9.

In which condition the line y=mx+cy = mx + c will be tangent to the circle x2+y2=a2x^2 + y^2 = a^2? (a) c2=a2(1+m2)c^2 = a^2(1 + m^2) (b) c2=a2(1−m2)c^2 = a^2(1 - m^2) (c) c2=a2(m2−1)c^2 = a^2(m^2 - 1) (d) c2=a2m2c^2 = a^2 m^2

Answer

(a) c2=a2(1+m2)c^2 = a^2(1 + m^2)

For the line y=mx+cy=mx+c to be tangent to the circle x2+y2=a2x^2+y^2=a^2, the perpendicular distance from the centre (0,0)(0,0) to the line must equal the radius aa:

∣c∣1+m2=a  ⟹  c2=a2(1+m2).\frac{|c|}{\sqrt{1+m^2}}=a \implies c^2=a^2(1+m^2).

a. [2] Find the eccentricity of conic 9x2+16y2=1449x^2 + 16y^2 = 144.
b. [3] Find the eccentricity of ellipse whose major axis is four times its minor axis and passes through the point (2,1)(2, 1).

Answer

(a) Dividing 9x2+16y2=1449x^2+16y^2=144 by 144144,

x216+y29=1\frac{x^2}{16}+\frac{y^2}{9}=1

so a2=16a^2=16, b2=9b^2=9 with a>ba>b (major axis along the xx-axis).

e=1−b2a2=1−916=74e=\sqrt{1-\frac{b^2}{a^2}}=\sqrt{1-\frac{9}{16}}=\frac{\sqrt7}{4}

(b) Let the semi-axes be aa (major) and bb (minor). Major axis =4×=4\times minor axis gives 2a=4(2b)2a=4(2b), so a=4ba=4b.

e=1−b2a2=1−b216b2=1516=154e=\sqrt{1-\frac{b^2}{a^2}}=\sqrt{1-\frac{b^2}{16b^2}}=\sqrt{\frac{15}{16}}=\frac{\sqrt{15}}{4}

The point (2,1)(2,1) only fixes the size of the ellipse (b2=54b^2=\tfrac54, a2=20a^2=20); the eccentricity depends only on the ratio of the axes.

Find the equation of the ellipse whose latus rectum is 5 and eccentricity is .

Answer

Let the ellipse be x2a2+y2b2=1\dfrac{x^2}{a^2}+\dfrac{y^2}{b^2}=1 with a>ba>b. Given latus rectum 2b2a=5\dfrac{2b^2}{a}=5 and e=12e=\dfrac12.

Since b2=a2(1−e2)=a2(1−14)=34a2b^2=a^2(1-e^2)=a^2\left(1-\tfrac14\right)=\tfrac34a^2,

2a⋅3a24=5  ⇒  3a2=5  ⇒  a=103\frac{2}{a}\cdot\frac{3a^2}{4}=5\;\Rightarrow\;\frac{3a}{2}=5\;\Rightarrow\;a=\frac{10}{3}

b2=34⋅1009=253b^2=\frac34\cdot\frac{100}{9}=\frac{25}{3}

Hence, with the major axis along the xx-axis,

x2100/9+y225/3=1i.e.9x2+12y2=100\frac{x^2}{100/9}+\frac{y^2}{25/3}=1\quad\text{i.e.}\quad 9x^2+12y^2=100

If the major axis is along the yy-axis, the equation is 12x2+9y2=10012x^2+9y^2=100.

touch the parabola . Comment on the relation of a, c and m after calculation.

Answer

Condition for the Line y=mx+cy = mx + c to Touch the Parabola y2=4axy^2 = 4ax

Given

  • Parabola: y2=4axy^2 = 4ax
  • Line: y=mx+cy = mx + c

Step 1: Substitute the line into the parabola

From y=mx+cy = mx + c, we have yy in terms of xx. Substituting into y2=4axy^2 = 4ax:

(mx+c)2=4ax(mx + c)^2 = 4ax

m2x2+2mcx+c2=4axm^2x^2 + 2mcx + c^2 = 4ax

m2x2+(2mc−4a)x+c2=0m^2x^2 + (2mc - 4a)x + c^2 = 0

Step 2: Apply the tangency condition

For the line to touch the parabola, it must meet it at exactly one point. So the quadratic in xx must have equal roots, i.e. discriminant =0= 0:

(2mc−4a)2−4(m2)(c2)=0(2mc - 4a)^2 - 4(m^2)(c^2) = 0

4(mc−2a)2−4m2c2=04(mc - 2a)^2 - 4m^2c^2 = 0

(mc−2a)2−m2c2=0(mc - 2a)^2 - m^2c^2 = 0

m2c2−4amc+4a2−m2c2=0m^2c^2 - 4amc + 4a^2 - m^2c^2 = 0

−4amc+4a2=0-4amc + 4a^2 = 0

4a(a−mc)=04a(a - mc) = 0

Since a≠0a \neq 0:

c=am\boxed{c = \frac{a}{m}}

Comment on the relation of aa, cc and mm

The condition for the line y=mx+cy = mx + c to touch the parabola y2=4axy^2 = 4ax is:

c=amor equivalentlymc=ac = \frac{a}{m} \quad \text{or equivalently} \quad mc = a

  • The y-intercept cc depends on both the slope mm and the focal parameter aa.
  • The product mcmc equals aa — a fixed constant for a given parabola.
  • For a steeper line (larger mm), the intercept cc must be smaller, and vice versa, so that mc=amc = a always holds.
  • This relation is independent of the point of contact; it guarantees tangency for any slope m≠0m \neq 0.

Which one of the following has transverse axis and conjugate axis? (a) x2a2+y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1 (b) x2a2−y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1 (c) y2=4axy^2 = 4ax (d) x2+y2=a2x^2 + y^2 = a^2

Answer

(b) x2a2−y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1

This is a hyperbola, and only a hyperbola has two axes — the transverse axis (along which the two branches lie, here the xx-axis, of length 2a2a) and the conjugate axis (the perpendicular axis, here the yy-axis, of length 2b2b). The ellipse in (a) has major and minor axes, the parabola in (c) has only one axis, and the circle in (d) has no such axes.

Find the equation of the parabola whose focus is at the point (2,3)(2,3) and the directrix is x−4=0x - 4 = 0.

Answer

Let P(x,y)P(x,y) be any point on the parabola. Focus F(2,3)F(2,3), directrix x=4x=4. By definition, PF=PF= distance of PP from the directrix:

(x−2)2+(y−3)2=∣x−4∣\sqrt{(x-2)^2+(y-3)^2}=|x-4|

Squaring,

(x−2)2+(y−3)2=(x−4)2(x-2)^2+(y-3)^2=(x-4)^2

x2−4x+4+(y−3)2=x2−8x+16x^2-4x+4+(y-3)^2=x^2-8x+16

Which one of the following conics is represented by the equation 4x2−16x+y2=484x^2 - 16x + y^2 = 48? a. Hyperbola b. Ellipse c. Parabola d. Circle

Answer

(b) Ellipse

Complete the square in xx:

4(x2−4x)+y2=48  ⇒  4(x−2)2−16+y2=48  ⇒  4(x−2)2+y2=644(x^2-4x)+y^2=48\;\Rightarrow\;4(x-2)^2-16+y^2=48\;\Rightarrow\;4(x-2)^2+y^2=64

(x−2)216+y264=1\frac{(x-2)^2}{16}+\frac{y^2}{64}=1

Both squared terms are positive with unequal denominators, so the conic is an ellipse (centre (2,0)(2,0), major axis along the yy-axis).

If a conic section has eccentricity (e) = a2−b2a\frac{a^2 - b^2}{a}, what is the equation of that conic section? A) x2a2−y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1 B) x2a2+y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1 C) x2a2+y2a2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{y^2}{a^2} = 1 D) x2b2+y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{b^2} + \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1

Answer

(b) x2a2+y2b2=1\dfrac{x^2}{a^2}+\dfrac{y^2}{b^2}=1

The eccentricity expression appears mistyped; the standard eccentricity of the ellipse x2a2+y2b2=1\dfrac{x^2}{a^2}+\dfrac{y^2}{b^2}=1 (a>ba>b) is

e=1−b2a2=a2−b2ae=\sqrt{1-\frac{b^2}{a^2}}=\frac{\sqrt{a^2-b^2}}{a}

which has the form of the given expression with  \sqrt{\ } over a2−b2a^2-b^2. The hyperbola (a) has e=a2+b2ae=\dfrac{\sqrt{a^2+b^2}}{a}, and the circle (c) has e=0e=0, so the conic is the ellipse.
