An aliphatic compound (A) reacts with SOCl2\mathrm{SOCl_2} to give (B). The compound (B) is heated with ammonia to produce (C). The compound (C) is further heated with Br2/KOH\mathrm{Br_2/KOH} to yield (D). The compound (D) gives (E) when treated with NaNO2/HCl\mathrm{NaNO_2/HCl} at low temperature. The compound (E) is a primary alcohol which gives positive iodoform test. Identify compound (A) to (E) with the reactions involved.

Answer

Working backwards. (E) is a primary alcohol giving a positive iodoform test, so (E) = ethanol, CH3CH2OHCH_3CH_2OH. It is formed from (D) by NaNO2_2/HCl, so (D) = ethylamine, CH3CH2NH2CH_3CH_2NH_2. Hofmann bromamide degradation removes one carbon, so (C) = propanamide, CH3CH2CONH2CH_3CH_2CONH_2. Then (B) = propanoyl chloride and (A) = propanoic acid.

A→Reaction 1CH3−C∣OHH−CH3→Reaction 2B (C5H10O2)→H2O/H+C+DA \xrightarrow{\text{Reaction 1}} CH_3-\overset{\overset{OH}{|}}{C}H-CH_3 \xrightarrow{\text{Reaction 2}} B\ (C_5H_{10}O_2) \xrightarrow{H_2O/H^+} C + D The compound (A) is C3H6OC_3H_6O which give positive Tollen's and Fehling's test.
i) Identify the compound (A) and write the test reaction. [2]
ii) Complete the reaction 1 and reaction 2. [2]
iii) Draw the structure of compound D. [1]
iv) Identify C and D with proper reaction. [1]
v) What happen when, compound B react with sodium ethoxide and also write the name of reaction.
Figure: Reaction scheme: A goes by Reaction 1 to propan-2-ol, drawn as CH3-CH-CH3 with OH on the middle carbon; this goes by Reaction 2 to B (C5H10O2); B with H2O/H+ gives C + D.

Answer

Note on the question. A is C3H6OC_3H_6O, and propan-2-ol is formed from it in Reaction 1. Only propanone (CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3) is reduced to propan-2-ol. Propanal (CH3CH2CHOCH_3CH_2CHO) is the C3H6OC_3H_6O isomer that actually gives Tollens' and Fehling's tests, but it would give propan-1-ol. The two statements in the question do not agree, so both are shown below. The rest of the sequence follows from propan-2-ol.

i) Compound A and test reaction

A is C3H6OC_3H_6O. The positive Tollens' and Fehling's tests point to the aldehyde propanal, CH3CH2CHOCH_3CH_2CHO. The reduction product propan-2-ol requires propanone, CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3.

Test reaction (Tollens', for the aldehyde):

CH3CH2CHO+2[Ag(NH3)2]++3OH−⟶CH3CH2COO−+2Ag↓+4NH3+2H2OCH_3CH_2CHO + 2[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+ + 3OH^- \longrightarrow CH_3CH_2COO^- + 2Ag\downarrow + 4NH_3 + 2H_2O

Silver mirror formed.

ii) Reactions 1 and 2

  • Reaction 1 (reduction): CH3COCH3+2[H]→H2/Ni or LiAlH4CH3CH(OH)CH3CH_3COCH_3 + 2[H] \xrightarrow{H_2/Ni \text{ or } LiAlH_4} CH_3CH(OH)CH_3
  • Reaction 2 (esterification): CH3CH(OH)CH3+CH3COOH→conc. H2SO4, ΔCH3COOCH(CH3)2+H2OCH_3CH(OH)CH_3 + CH_3COOH \xrightarrow{\text{conc. } H_2SO_4,\ \Delta} CH_3COOCH(CH_3)_2 + H_2O

B = isopropyl ethanoate (propan-2-yl ethanoate), C5H10O2C_5H_{10}O_2.

iii) Structure of D

D = propan-2-ol:

   CH3 - CH - CH3
         |
         OH

iv) Identification of C and D

CH3COOCH(CH3)2+H2O→H+CH3COOH+CH3CH(OH)CH3CH_3COOCH(CH_3)_2 + H_2O \xrightarrow{H^+} CH_3COOH + CH_3CH(OH)CH_3

C = ethanoic acid, D = propan-2-ol.

v) B with sodium ethoxide

Two molecules of the ester condense. One molecule supplies an α\alpha-carbanion, which attacks the carbonyl of the other, and an alcohol is lost. This gives a β\beta-keto ester:

2CH3COOCH(CH3)2→C2H5ONaCH3COCH2COOCH(CH3)2+(CH3)2CHOH2CH_3COOCH(CH_3)_2 \xrightarrow{C_2H_5ONa} CH_3COCH_2COOCH(CH_3)_2 + (CH_3)_2CHOH

This is the Claisen condensation. Isopropyl 3-oxobutanoate is formed, the analogue of ethyl acetoacetate.

Which is the weakest acid among the following?
(a) ClCH2COOH\mathrm{ClCH_2COOH} (b) CCl3COOH\mathrm{CCl_3COOH} (c) ClCH2COOH\mathrm{ClCH_2COOH} (d) CH3COOH\mathrm{CH_3COOH}

Answer

(d) CH3COOHCH_3COOH

(Options (a) and (c) are printed identically in the question.) The −I-I effect of Cl atoms stabilises the carboxylate ion and increases acidity. CCl3COOHCCl_3COOH has the strongest effect, then ClCH2COOHClCH_2COOH. In CH3COOHCH_3COOH the methyl group has a +I+I effect, which destabilises the anion, so it is the weakest acid.

Formic acid behaves as both acid and aldehyde. Write reactions to support each kind of behaviour.

Answer

Methanoic acid, H−COOHH-COOH, has both a carboxyl group and an aldehyde group (H-C=O attached to OH).

As an acid. It turns blue litmus red and neutralises bases:

HCOOH+NaOH⟶HCOONa+H2OHCOOH + NaOH \longrightarrow HCOONa + H_2O

It also liberates CO2CO_2 from carbonates: 2HCOOH+Na2CO3⟶2HCOONa+H2O+CO22HCOOH + Na_2CO_3 \longrightarrow 2HCOONa + H_2O + CO_2.

As an aldehyde. It is a reducing agent. With Tollens' reagent it gives a silver mirror:

HCOOH+2[Ag(NH3)2]++2OH−⟶CO2+2Ag↓+4NH3+2H2OHCOOH + 2[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+ + 2OH^- \longrightarrow CO_2 + 2Ag\downarrow + 4NH_3 + 2H_2O

It also reduces Fehling's solution to red Cu2OCu_2O and decolourises acidified KMnO4KMnO_4.

Identify (A), (B), (C) and (D) in the following reaction sequence.
(A)→ΔNaOH+CaO(B)→ΔCHCl3/AlCl3(C)→[O]CeO2/H+(D)\mathrm{(A) \xrightarrow[\Delta]{NaOH + CaO} (B) \xrightarrow[\Delta]{CHCl_3/AlCl_3} (C) \xrightarrow[{[O]}]{CeO_2/H^+} (D)} Compound 'C' can be obtained by Clemmensen's reduction of benzaldehyde. [1×4]

Answer

Working from the hint. Clemmensen reduction of benzaldehyde gives toluene, so C = toluene. Toluene is formed from benzene (B) by Friedel-Crafts alkylation, and benzene comes from decarboxylation of sodium benzoate (A). Oxidation of toluene gives D = benzaldehyde.

The printed "CHCl3/AlCl3CHCl_3/AlCl_3" must be read as CH3Cl/AlCl3CH_3Cl/AlCl_3, since CHCl3CHCl_3 would not give toluene.

Convert ethanoic acid into methanoic acid. [2]

Similar questions: Conversion of methanoic into ethanoic acid (2082 Ashoj · Supplementary)

Answer

The carbon chain must be shortened by one carbon, which is done by the Hofmann bromamide reaction and then oxidation:

CH3COOH→NH3, ΔCH3CONH2→Br2/KOHCH3NH2→HNO2CH3OH→[O]HCHO→[O]HCOOHCH_3COOH \xrightarrow{NH_3,\ \Delta} CH_3CONH_2 \xrightarrow{Br_2/KOH} CH_3NH_2 \xrightarrow{HNO_2} CH_3OH \xrightarrow{[O]} HCHO \xrightarrow{[O]} HCOOH

The oxidation of methanol uses acidified K2Cr2O7K_2Cr_2O_7 (an excess of oxidant takes it through methanal to methanoic acid).

Arrange the given compounds according to their ascending order of acidic strength and justify your order.
CH3CH2COOHCH_3CH_2COOH, C6H5COOHC_6H_5COOH, ClCH2CH2COOHClCH_2CH_2COOH [1+1+1]

Answer

Ascending order of acidic strength:

CH3CH2COOH<C6H5COOH<ClCH2CH2COOHCH_3CH_2COOH < C_6H_5COOH < ClCH_2CH_2COOH

(pKa about 4.87, 4.20 and 4.0 respectively.)

Justification

  • CH3CH2COOHCH_3CH_2COOH: the ethyl group has a +I+I effect. It pushes electrons towards the carboxylate and destabilises CH3CH2COO−CH_3CH_2COO^-, so this is the weakest acid.
  • C6H5COOHC_6H_5COOH: the phenyl carbon is sp2sp^2 and is more electronegative than an alkyl carbon. It has a −I-I effect and withdraws electrons. This stabilises C6H5COO−C_6H_5COO^-, so benzoic acid is stronger than propanoic acid.
  • ClCH2CH2COOHClCH_2CH_2COOH: chlorine is strongly electronegative and has a −I-I effect. It withdraws electrons and disperses the negative charge on the carboxylate. This gives the most stable anion and the strongest acid, even though Cl is two carbons away from the COOH group.

A more stable conjugate base means a stronger acid.

c) Write a suitable test reaction to distinguish A from methanoic acid. (1)
d) Arrange the following in the decreasing order of their acidic strength and give reason for your answer.
CH3COOH, ClCH2COOH, FCH2COOH, C6H5COOHCH_3COOH,\ ClCH_2COOH,\ FCH_2COOH,\ C_6H_5COOH (2)
e) Identify A and B of the following reactions. (2)
(The reactions for part (e) are not printed in the source paper; the space below this line is blank in every available copy.)
Figure: Part (e) refers to 'the following reactions', but the published paper leaves that space blank: no reaction scheme is printed in any copy.

Answer

C2H4O2C_2H_4O_2 has two functional isomers. A is ethanoic acid, CH3COOHCH_3COOH (turns blue litmus red). B is methyl methanoate, HCOOCH3HCOOCH_3 (fruity smell, an ester).

a) Formation of A using Grignard's reagent

CH3MgBr+CO2→dry etherCH3COOMgBr→H3O+CH3COOH+Mg(OH)BrCH_3MgBr + CO_2 \xrightarrow{\text{dry ether}} CH_3COOMgBr \xrightarrow{H_3O^+} CH_3COOH + Mg(OH)Br

b) Conversion of A into B

  1. CH3COOH+NH3⟶CH3COONH4→ΔCH3CONH2+H2OCH_3COOH + NH_3 \longrightarrow CH_3COONH_4 \xrightarrow{\Delta} CH_3CONH_2 + H_2O
  2. CH3CONH2+Br2+4KOH⟶CH3NH2+K2CO3+2KBr+2H2OCH_3CONH_2 + Br_2 + 4KOH \longrightarrow CH_3NH_2 + K_2CO_3 + 2KBr + 2H_2O (Hofmann)
  3. CH3NH2+HNO2⟶CH3OH+N2+H2OCH_3NH_2 + HNO_2 \longrightarrow CH_3OH + N_2 + H_2O
  4. Part of the methanol is oxidised: CH3OH→K2Cr2O7/H+HCOOHCH_3OH \xrightarrow{K_2Cr_2O_7/H^+} HCOOH
  5. HCOOH+CH3OH→conc. H2SO4HCOOCH3+H2OHCOOH + CH_3OH \xrightarrow{\text{conc. } H_2SO_4} HCOOCH_3 + H_2O

c) Test to distinguish A from methanoic acid

Use Tollens' reagent. Methanoic acid gives a silver mirror; ethanoic acid does not:

HCOOH+2[Ag(NH3)2]++2OH−⟶CO2+2Ag↓+4NH3+2H2OHCOOH + 2[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+ + 2OH^- \longrightarrow CO_2 + 2Ag\downarrow + 4NH_3 + 2H_2O

(Fehling's solution can also be used: methanoic acid gives red Cu2OCu_2O.)

d) Decreasing order of acidic strength

FCH2COOH>ClCH2COOH>C6H5COOH>CH3COOHFCH_2COOH > ClCH_2COOH > C_6H_5COOH > CH_3COOH

Reason: Electron-withdrawing groups (−I-I effect) stabilise the carboxylate anion and increase acidity. F is more electronegative than Cl, so its −I-I effect is stronger. The phenyl group is weakly electron-withdrawing, so benzoic acid is stronger than ethanoic acid. In CH3COOHCH_3COOH the methyl group has a +I+I effect, which destabilises the anion, so it is the weakest.

e) Part (e) refers to reactions that are not printed in the paper, so it cannot be answered from the given text. From the data, A = CH3COOHCH_3COOH (ethanoic acid) and B = HCOOCH3HCOOCH_3 (methyl methanoate).

Which of the following is the correct order of boiling point of the following compounds?
A. CH3CHOCH_3CHO B. C2H5OHC_2H_5OH C. CH3COOHCH_3COOH
(a) A > B > C (b) C > A > B (c) C > B > A (d) B > C > A

Answer

(c) C > B > A

Ethanoic acid forms very strong hydrogen bonds and exists as a hydrogen-bonded dimer, so it has the highest boiling point (118 °C). Ethanol has intermolecular hydrogen bonding but weaker than the acid dimer (78 °C). Ethanal has no O–H, so it has only dipole–dipole forces and boils lowest (21 °C).

Which of the following reagents converts a carboxylic acid to an anhydride?
(a) P2O5P_2O_5 (b) CaOCaO (c) LiAlH4LiAlH_4 (d) Na/C2H5OHNa/C_2H_5OH

Answer

(a) P2O5P_2O_5

P2O5P_2O_5 is a strong dehydrating agent. It removes one molecule of water from two molecules of the acid:

2CH3COOH→P2O5, Δ(CH3CO)2O+H2O2CH_3COOH \xrightarrow{P_2O_5,\ \Delta} (CH_3CO)_2O + H_2O

CaOCaO only neutralises the acid, while LiAlH4LiAlH_4 and Na/C2H5OHNa/C_2H_5OH are reducing agents.

The list of organic compounds is given as follows:
propanoic acid, ethanol, ethanamine, chloroethane, propanamide
Prepare the correct sequence giving suitable conditions/reagents. [5]

Answer

The five compounds can be linked in the following order:

propanoic acid → propanamide → ethanamine → ethanol → chloroethane

1. Propanoic acid to propanamide. Treat with NH3NH_3 to form ammonium propanoate, then heat it:

CH3CH2COOH+NH3→CH3CH2COONH4→ΔCH3CH2CONH2+H2OCH_3CH_2COOH + NH_3 \rightarrow CH_3CH_2COONH_4 \xrightarrow{\Delta} CH_3CH_2CONH_2 + H_2O

2. Propanamide to ethanamine (Hofmann bromamide reaction). The amide loses one carbon:

CH3CH2CONH2+Br2+4KOH→CH3CH2NH2+K2CO3+2KBr+2H2OCH_3CH_2CONH_2 + Br_2 + 4KOH \rightarrow CH_3CH_2NH_2 + K_2CO_3 + 2KBr + 2H_2O

3. Ethanamine to ethanol. Treat with nitrous acid (NaNO2+HClNaNO_2 + HCl, 0–5 °C):

CH3CH2NH2+HNO2→CH3CH2OH+N2+H2OCH_3CH_2NH_2 + HNO_2 \rightarrow CH_3CH_2OH + N_2 + H_2O

4. Ethanol to chloroethane. Use SOCl2SOCl_2 (or PCl5PCl_5, or HCl/anhyd. ZnCl2ZnCl_2):

CH3CH2OH+SOCl2→CH3CH2Cl+SO2+HClCH_3CH_2OH + SOCl_2 \rightarrow CH_3CH_2Cl + SO_2 + HCl

Closing the cycle. Chloroethane returns to propanoic acid by heating with KCN (giving propanenitrile) and then hydrolysing with dilute acid:

CH3CH2Cl→KCNCH3CH2CN→H3O+, ΔCH3CH2COOHCH_3CH_2Cl \xrightarrow{KCN} CH_3CH_2CN \xrightarrow{H_3O^+,\ \Delta} CH_3CH_2COOH

How is ethanoic acid prepared from the following compounds? [1+1+1]
i. CH3MgBrCH_3MgBr
ii. CH3CNCH_3CN
iii. CH3ONaCH_3ONa

Answer

i. From CH3MgBrCH_3MgBr. Pass dry CO2CO_2 (or add solid CO2CO_2) into the Grignard reagent, then hydrolyse with dilute acid:

CH3MgBr+CO2→CH3COOMgBr→H3O+CH3COOH+Mg(OH)BrCH_3MgBr + CO_2 \rightarrow CH_3COOMgBr \xrightarrow{H_3O^+} CH_3COOH + Mg(OH)Br

ii. From CH3CNCH_3CN. Hydrolyse by boiling with dilute HCl (or aqueous NaOH, followed by acidification):

CH3CN+2H2O→H+, ΔCH3COOH+NH4+CH_3CN + 2H_2O \xrightarrow{H^+,\ \Delta} CH_3COOH + NH_4^+

iii. From CH3ONaCH_3ONa. Heat with carbon monoxide under pressure (about 10 atm, 150 °C) to get sodium ethanoate, then acidify:

CH3ONa+CO→Δ, pressureCH3COONa→HClCH3COOH+NaClCH_3ONa + CO \xrightarrow{\Delta,\ \text{pressure}} CH_3COONa \xrightarrow{HCl} CH_3COOH + NaCl
