Introduce psychological problems.

Answer

Psychological problems refer to abnormal or maladaptive patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that cause significant distress, impair daily functioning, or increase the risk of harm to oneself or others. They are deviations from normal mental health — such as anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and personality disorders — that disturb a person's thoughts, emotions, or behaviour and reduce their ability to cope with everyday life.

Write any two useful methods for solving psychological problems.

Answer

Counselling and guidance

Two useful methods for solving psychological problems are:

  1. Counselling – A trained counsellor helps the person talk through their problems and find practical solutions, giving emotional support and advice.
  2. Guidance – Systematic help given to an individual to make wise choices and adjustments in life (educational, vocational or personal), so that problems are prevented or reduced.

State any two causes of mental health problem created by educational failure.

Answer

Two causes of mental health problems created by educational failure are:

  1. Excessive pressure and high expectations — Parents and society expect good marks and compare the student with peers, causing stress, anxiety and fear of failure.
  2. Loss of self-confidence and feelings of inferiority — Repeated failure makes the student feel worthless, hopeless and inadequate, which can lead to depression and other mental health problems.

State any five ways for solving psychological problems seen in children.

Answer

Psychological problems in children (such as anxiety, aggression, bed-wetting, temper tantrums, and learning difficulties) can be solved through the following five ways:

1. Behaviour therapy (behaviour modification) Undesirable behaviour is reduced and desirable behaviour is increased using learning principles. Techniques such as positive reinforcement, token economy, shaping, extinction and time-out are used. For example, a child who throws tantrums is ignored during the tantrum (extinction) but praised when calm (reinforcement).

2. Cognitive therapy The faulty or irrational thoughts and beliefs behind the child's problem are identified and corrected. Through discussion, modelling and self-instruction, the child is taught to think rationally and to replace negative self-talk (e.g., "I am good for nothing") with positive, realistic thoughts. This is useful in anxiety, low self-esteem and depression.

3. Play therapy Since children cannot always express feelings in words, they are allowed to play with toys, dolls, clay or drawings. Through play the child expresses inner conflicts, fears and frustrations, and the therapist interprets and gives emotional support. It is effective for emotional and adjustment problems.

4. Family therapy and parental counselling The child's problem is treated as a family problem. Parents are taught proper child-rearing practices — consistent discipline, warmth, avoiding harsh punishment and over-protection — and family interaction patterns are improved so that the child gets a healthy emotional environment.

5. Counselling, guidance and environmental modification The child is given direct counselling, guidance and reassurance, and the school and home environment is modified to remove the causes of stress (e.g., changing seating, reducing workload, teacher's cooperation). In severe cases, referral to a child guidance clinic, psychotherapy or medication by a psychiatrist may also be needed.

Conclusion: Thus, behaviour therapy, cognitive therapy, play therapy, family therapy and counselling/environmental modification are five important ways of solving psychological problems in children.

State any five ways of stress management which may create due to educational failure.

Answer

Here are five ways of managing stress that may arise due to educational failure:

1. Cognitive restructuring (positive reframing) Educational failure is often interpreted as a sign of personal worthlessness. Stress can be reduced by challenging these irrational beliefs and reinterpreting failure as a learning experience rather than a permanent judgment of ability. The student replaces thoughts like "I am a total failure" with "I did not succeed this time, but I can improve with better effort and strategy."

2. Seeking social support Sharing feelings with parents, teachers, siblings, or friends provides emotional reassurance and practical advice. Talking reduces the sense of isolation and helplessness that accompanies failure, and support figures can help the student find realistic solutions such as re-examination, change of stream, or additional coaching.

3. Relaxation techniques Practices such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, and yoga calm the physiological arousal (rapid heartbeat, tension, sleeplessness) produced by stress. Regular relaxation lowers anxiety and restores the mental calm needed to think clearly about the next step.

4. Physical exercise and healthy lifestyle Regular exercise releases endorphins, improves mood, and drains off nervous tension. Adequate sleep, balanced diet, and avoidance of stimulants like excess caffeine also strengthen the body's resistance to stress and prevent fatigue from worsening the emotional reaction to failure.

5. Time management and realistic goal setting Failure frequently results from poor planning or over-ambitious goals. Breaking large tasks into small, achievable steps, preparing a realistic study timetable, and setting attainable targets rebuild confidence through small successes. This reduces the pressure of an overwhelming workload and gives the student a sense of control over the situation.

Additional accepted points (any of these may be used): seeking professional counselling or guidance, engaging in hobbies and recreational activities, maintaining a stress diary, and practising mindfulness or meditation.

Note: Stress following educational failure is a situational and psychological stressor; these techniques work best when combined, and severe or prolonged distress warrants the help of a school counsellor or psychologist.
